This study attempts to understand the factors that influence clinician resistance to the implementation of health information technology in a mandatory setting. A survey study was conducted with 202 clinicians regarding their perceptions of the implementation of electronic medication management systems (eMMS) in an Australian hospital. The data was collected during the initial roll-out of eMMS for model validation and quantitative analysis. The overall results indicated that performance expectancy, switching costs, and facilitating conditions are direct predictors of clinician resistance, whereas effort expectancy and social influence showed indirect effects on clinician resistance through performance expectancy or switching costs. The study is among the first study that investigates passive clinician resistance to the implementation of health information technology in a health organisation. This study also focused on opposition behaviour among under-examined degrees of resistance. This study provides some insights to the hospital management on how to mitigate clinician resistance in the implementation of health information technology. Other types of clinician resistance, such as postponement and rejection, are not examined in this study. Future research on postponement behaviour and rejection behaviour is needed to have a more comprehensive view of clinician resistance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Technology companies in a continuous transformation process within the scope of Industry 4.0 practices have followed rapidly changing and developing technological advances closely and have made permanent and successful digital transformation efforts. However, there might be met with resistance of employees sometimes during the digital transformation process. This study examines the user resistance of the employees working at technology companies in Istanbul towards digital transformation and determining user resistance factors. A survey questionnaire was prepared to gather the data. In this regard, The Scale of User Resistance towards Information Systems Implementation developed by Kim & Kankanhalli (2009) with 24 statements was used. The scale has seven dimensions: user resistance, perceived value, switching benefits, switching costs, colleague opinion, self-efficacy for change, and organizational support. The target population of the study consists of the employees working at the technology companies in Istanbul. One of the pioneer companies of the information technology sector was selected as the sample group, and 220 employees attended the research based on voluntariness. SPSS 22.0 program was used for the analysis of the data. According to the results, it was found that the participants have low-level user resistance and adapt to the digital transformation at high-level generally. Furthermore, as the result of hypothesis tests, the findings indicate an effect of perceived value and switching benefits, self-efficacy on user resistance, self-efficacy and organizational support on switching costs, and colleague opinion on perceived value and switching benefits, were reached. At the end of the research, the findings were interpreted via previous research findings. Kim & Kankanhalli introduced status quo bias perspective (SQBP) to help understand information systems (hereinafter IS) users' resistance behaviour. Since then, scholars have widely referred to the theoretical perspective to understand user resistance to and adoption of new IS and information and communication technologies (hereinafter ICT). However, our analysis found that while adopting SQBP, researchers focused primarily on rational cost-and-benefit analysis, rather than on the fundamental tenet of SQBP that highlights 'bias' in users' decision-making on account of their cognitive limitations that lead to bounded rationality. In addition, some of the key constructs used in SQBP were not properly interpreted or were oversimplified in their operationalization. This research note aims to provide guidance for utilizing and analysing SQBP and its constructs for future IS user resistance/adoption research. Because SQBP provides unique insights into 'bias' in human decision-making in its presentation of bounded rationality, accurate interpretation of its concepts and their investigation can help better understand the different sources of user resistance derived from the status quo bias during new IS and ICT implementation. © 2016 John Wiley & Sons Ltd [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Perkembangan ekonomi yang semakin cepat menyebabkan persaingan bisnis yang semakin ketat. Apalagi dengan adanya perkembangan teknologi yang semakin canggih, perusahaan-perusahaan tersebut berlomba-lomba dalam memanfaatkan teknologi untuk meningkatkan keunggulan kompetitif dan efisiensi kinerja perusahaan mereka dibandingkan pesaingnya. Salah satu investasi teknologi informasi yang populer saat ini adalah sistem Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) yaitu paket aplikasi yang menawarkan ”best practice” dalam menjalankan bisnis dengan menggunakan satu basis data yang dapat diakses oleh semua divisi dalam perusahaan. Terdapat banyak keuntungan yang dapat dirasakan oleh perusahaan dengan mengimplementasi sistem ERP, seperti mengurangi biaya produksi, meningkatkan integrasi data, dan mengurangi level inventori. Namun, sebagian besar implementasi sistem ERP yang telah dilakukan oleh beberapa perusahaan mengalami kegagalan. Salah satu faktor yang menyebabkan kegagalan ini adalah adanya resistensi pengguna terhadap perubahan. Resistensi dari pengguna ini juga menyebabkan perusahaan tidak dapat memaksimalkan keuntungan dari implementasi sistem ERP. Oleh karena itu, paper ini akan membahas mengenai faktor-faktor yang memengaruhi penerimaan pengguna dalam menggunakan sistem ERP. Faktor-faktor penerimaan ini didasarkan pada model penerimaan pengguna yang sudah ada pada penelitian sebelumnya yaitu model Unified Theory of Acceptance and Usage of Technology (UTAUT). An increasingly rapid economic development led to the increasingly stringent business competition. Especially with the development of increasingly sophisticated technology, these companies are competing in utilizing technology to enhance competitive advantage and efficiency of their company's performance than its competitors. One of the investment in information technology that is popular today is the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, is an application package that offers best practice of doing business by using a single database that is accessible by all divisions within the company. There are many advantages that can be felt by companies to implement ERP systems, such as reducing production costs, improve data integration, and reduce inventory levels. However, most implementations of ERP systems that have been done by some companies to fail. One of the factors that caused this failure is the presence of user resistance to change. Resistance from users has also led the company can not maximize the benefits of ERP system implementation. Therefore, this paper will discuss the factors affecting user acceptance of ERP systems in use. Acceptance factors are based on the user acceptance model that already exists in previous studies that model the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Usage of Technology (UTAUT).

This case examines the failed implementation of an electronic workflow system at a very successful, medium-sized company in South Korea. The CEO of the company approved and supported the system, invested substantial resources in its development and implementation, and mandated that the entire organization adopt and use the system. However, the importance of status, position and the importance of the tojang stamp were factors that the workflow system did not account for and were "lost" when the workflow system was introduced As a result, the employees of the company were steadfast in their refusal to use the system as designed The purpose of this study is to investigate several explanatory frameworks that may shed light on the reasons for the failure of this implementation. To better explain resistance to information technology implementation, we used a multilevel, longitudinal approach. We first assessed extant models of resistance to IT. Using semantic analysis, we identified five basic components of resistance: behaviors, object, subject, threats, and initial conditions. We further examined extant models to (1) carry out a preliminary specification of the nature of the relationships between these components and (2) refine our understanding of the multilevel nature of the phenomenon. Using analytic induction, we examined data from three case studies of clinical information systems implementations in hospital settings, focusing on physicians' resistance behaviors. The resulting mixed-determinants model suggests that group resistance behaviors vary during implementation. When a system is introduced, users in a group will first assess it in terms of the interplay between its features and individual and/or organizational-level initial conditions. They then make projections about the consequences of its use. If expected consequences are threatening, resistance behaviors will result. During implementation, should some trigger occur to either modify or activate an initial condition involving the balance of power between the group and other user groups, it will also modify the object of resistance, from system to system significance. If the relevant initial conditions pertain to the power of the resisting group vis-à-vis the system advocates, the object of resistance will also be modified, from system significance to system advocates. Resistance behaviors will follow if threats are perceived from the interaction between the object of resistance and initial conditions. We also found that the bottom-up process by which group resistance behaviors emerge from individual behaviors is not the same in early versus late implementation. In early implementation, the emergence process is one of compilation, described as a combination of independent, individual behaviors. In later stages of implementation, if group level initial conditions have become active, the emergence process is one of composition, described as the convergence of individual behaviors. In this paper, we examine the process by which user cynicism emerges and is constituted as part of resistance in information technology (IT) implementation. We ground our process perspective in the received user resistance literature by linking cynicism to users' projections of the system's future use. Rather than attributing cynicism to perceived threats, however, we see user cynicism as cognitively distanced resistance that manifests as a perception of seeing through the espoused goals of the implementers. Based on a process analysis of a customer relationship management implementation at a customer service centre, the paper extends the user resistance model proposed by Lapointe and Rivard by identifying three dimensions of user cynicism in IT implementation. It also shows how cynicism, as a form of passive resistance, easily escalates and feeds new forms of resistance.
