Several federal science agencies have formed an alliance to work together and to make an interagency science portal, science.gov http://www.science.gov, a reality that will serve the needs of the research community and provide universal access to physical science information for citizens. While much progress has been made, challenges of resources and funding remain. (AEF)

Background: In times of crises, 2-1-1 serves as a lifeline in many ways. These crises often cause a spike in call volume that can challenge 2-1-1's ability to meet its service quality standards. For researchers gathering data through 2-1-1s, a sudden increase in call volume might reduce accrual as 2-1-1 has less time to administer study protocols. Research activities imbedded in 2-1-1 systems may affect directly 2-1-1 service quality indicators., Purpose: Using data from a 2-1-1 research collaboration, this paper examines the impact of crises on call volume to 2-1-1, how call volume affects research participant accrual through 2-1-1, and how research recruitment efforts affect 2-1-1 service quality indicators., Methods: t-tests were used to examine the effect of call volume on research participant accrual. Linear and logistic regressions were used to examine the effect of research participant accrual on 2-1-1 service quality indicators. Data were collected June 2010-December 2011; data were analyzed in 2012., Results: Findings from this collaboration suggest that crises causing spikes in call volume adversely affect 2-1-1 service quality indicators as well as accrual of research participants. Administering a brief (2-3 minute) health risk assessment did not affect service quality negatively, but administering a longer (15-18 minute) survey had a modest adverse effect on these indicators., Conclusions: In 2-1-1 research collaborations, both partners need to understand the dynamic relationship among call volume, research accrual, and service quality and adjust expectations accordingly. If research goals include administering a longer survey, increased staffing of 2-1-1 call centers may be needed to avoid compromising service quality., (Copyright © 2012 American Journal of Preventive Medicine. Purpose - The paper seeks to introduce a special issue of Aslib Proceedings, which contains a series of papers written by staff and research students at the Department of Information Science, City University London. Design/methodology/approach - This introductory paper introduces the other papers in the special issue and sets them in context. Findings - This editorial argues that the information science discipline, which has always been the focus of City's research and scholarship, is a valid academic discipline with a positive future. This paper reflects on the dissemination of potentially controversial research evidence about industrial air pollution and health in north-east England. It draws on a participant observation study of the local impact of a four-year epidemiological research programme in Teesside. The difficulties in and obstacles to disseminating research findings are explored. It may thus be described as a study of the impact of a study. We look at institutional resistance (including from the funders of the research) to any evidence indicating adverse health effects from industrial pollution. We also look at the failure of researchers to surmount such resistance and to communicate effectively with those who lived in the vicinity of the major industrial operations. This leads us to consider how conflicting notions of accountability coloured dissemination strategies as well as researchers' judgements. We offer a critique of fashionable and unduly consensual notions of a 'user community', in a context where different 'user communities' had incompatible expectations about the purpose of a piece of research and the significance of the data to emerge from it. The study also highlights the difficulties of disseminating research findings when the topic has the potential to affect economic interests.

The purpose of this paper is to facilitate international research of medical resources on the World Wide Web. International research consists of overcoming a unique set of obstacles and challenges that are not involved when undertaking research tasks using only U.S.-based information. Utilizing the World Wide Web can help us to overcome most of the restraints we would have to face when we perform research outside of our local geography. Currently, there are a number of Internet Web sites that may assist us in breaking down the barriers to undertaking international research.

The present paper reviews issues of treatment efficacy (i.e., potency) and effectiveness (i.e., clinical utility) in applied clinical child research. Threats to treatment evaluation are reviewed in the context of these two dimensions. It is proposed that treatment outcome research faces new challenges stemming from the ever increasing emphasis on generalization of gains and dissemination of interventions outside of clinical research settings. Issues and approaches proposed as warranting further development and attention include development, flexibility, acceptability, and disseminability of psychosocial assessment and treatment methods. A research emphasis is promoted that balances experimental control with the need for treatment generalization and delivery outside of the research setting, in order to maximize the utility of clinical research.

This paper outlines the development of the Sustaining Oncology Studies Information Resources (SOS Europe), a multimedia World Wide Web (WWW) prototype providing support to experimental and clinical cancer researchers, general practitioners, industry personnel, and university students in the field of oncology in Europe and Italy. The system utilizes applications developed for the WWW and is designed in the most easily understandable approaches possible. The prototype now structures oncology-related information available on the Internet and also places resources maintained locally at users' disposal. The system utilizes a WWW browser as a design platform and HTML to build its Home and subpages and to create hyperlinks to internal and external resources.

An evaluation method used to assess the quality of research productivity and to provide priorities for budget allocation purposes is presented. This method, developed by a working group of the National Institute for Research on Cancer (IST), Genoa, Italy, is based on the partitioning of categories of the Science Citation Index and Journal Citation Reports (SCI-JCR) into deciles, which normalizes journal impact factors in order to gauge the quality of the productivity. A second parameter related to the number of staff of each institute department co-authoring a given paper has been introduced in order to guide departmental budget allocations. The information scientists of the IST Documentation Center who participated in the working group played a pivotal role in developing the computerized database of publications, providing and analyzing data, supplying and evaluating literature on the topic, and placing international bibliographic databases at the working group's disposal.

The article discusses the various endeavors of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). Founded in 1920, NBER sponsors and distributes research aimed at furthering economic knowledge. The Bureau maintains several ongoing programs including those specializing in Asset Pricing, Children's Health & Well-Being, and Corporate Finance, among several others. Researchers can explore topics of common interest under the aegis of an NBER Project. Projects ongoing in 1999 focused on such areas as international capital flows, school choice, and Social Security reform. NBER also publishes working papers, periodicals, and books.

The integrity of data bases to support microcomputer-based dietary analysis programs has become increasingly important to developers and users of nutritional analysis software. This paper reviews critical issues in maintaining data integrity during development of small nutritional data bases. Because a limited number of large, source data bases provides the data for smaller, special-purpose data bases, this review initially focuses on factors that affect the quality and precision of methodologies used in establishing large data bases. Issues discussed are accuracy of source data as determined by analytical methodology and imputation procedures, and methods for insuring representativeness of data. The effect of data transfer procedures on small data base integrity are discussed, including use of multiple sources and standardization of naming and coding conventions. Also reviewed are procedures for selecting reduced numbers of foods and nutrients without sacrificing accuracy of analysis, and methods currently in use for validating small data bases.

Purpose: This paper evaluates the precision of four metasearch engines (MSEs) – DuckDuckGo, Dogpile, Metacrawler and Startpage, to determine which metasearch engine exhibits the highest level of precision and to identify the metasearch engine that is most likely to return the most relevant search results. Design/methodology/approach: The research is divided into two parts: the first phase involves four queries categorized into two segments (4-Q-2-S), while the second phase includes six queries divided into three segments (6-Q-3-S). These queries vary in complexity, falling into three types: simple, phrase and complex. The precision, average precision and the presence of duplicates across all the evaluated metasearch engines are determined. Findings: The study clearly demonstrated that Startpage returned the most relevant results and achieved the highest precision (0.98) among the four MSEs. Conversely, DuckDuckGo exhibited consistent performance across both phases of the study. Research limitations/implications: The study only evaluated four metasearch engines, which may not be representative of all available metasearch engines. Additionally, a limited number of queries were used, which may not be sufficient to generalize the findings to all types of queries. Practical implications: The findings of this study can be valuable for accreditation agencies in managing duplicates, improving their search capabilities and obtaining more relevant and precise results. These findings can also assist users in selecting the best metasearch engine based on precision rather than interface. Originality/value: The study is the first of its kind which evaluates the four metasearch engines. No similar study has been conducted in the past to measure the performance of metasearch engines.
