Abstract: We proposed a simple scheme to deterministically generate three-dimensional (3D) quantum state transfer (QST) between two spatially atoms based on the selectivity photon emission and absorption progresses. In the present scheme, two M-type five-level atoms are trapped into two cavities connected by a fiber. By quantitatively discussing the evolution of system, we show that the effects of atom''s spontaneous decay and photon leakage out of fiber can be suppressed in our scheme due to the presence of virtual excited processes in atom and fiber modes. Moreover, we also show that the present scheme can be extended to realize QST between distant nodes in a coupled array of optical cavity, which is very useful for the progress of the quantum information network. Abstract: An all-optical approach to reduce the speed mismatch between electronic sources and high-speed wavelength channels is to time-division multiplex low-capacity circuits onto each wavelength. In such a Time-Wavelength-Switched Network (TWSN), the optical crossconnects (OXCs) are configured to switch time-wavelength-slots within the network. The OXCs can be deployed with a bank of fiber delay lines (FDLs) to improve the connection slot scheduling and decrease the connection blocking probability. In this paper, we consider the two broad scenarios of sharing a bank of FDLs: shared per output link (SPL) and shared per crossconnect (SPC). We present several OXC architectures and develop graph formulations that can be used to optimally solve the scheduling problem. We also incorporate wavelength conversion and feedback in these architectures and study the impact of various FDL configurations on a crossconnect’s performance. Results using numerical simulations show that the FDL configuration does in fact affect the performance of the OXC. We also evaluate the performance of an OXC equipped with an FDL bank for both the SPL and SPC scenarios by considering sparse wavelength converters (limited number of full range wavelength converters). Results show that using sparse converters along with FDLs could provide significant benefits. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Next generation backbone networks will likely consist of IP routers as well as optical cross connects (OXCs) and will deploy an optical control plane protocol. Generalized Multi Protocol Label Switching (GMPLS) has been proposed as the candidate of choice for the control plane. Optical fibers may carry large volumes of traffic and therefore adequate mechanisms must exist to enable the network to automatically recover from failures of fiber. In mission critical networks survivability becomes very important. We investigate the problem of autonomous recovery in such networks. The literature contains work in this area that investigates the problem of multilayer recovery. Such recovery had only been sequential in the sense that the published work recovers first in the optical domain, assuming the availability of redundant resources, and then proceeds to recover packet label switched paths. We report a recovery procedure for recovering packet label switch paths (packet LSPs) and lambda label switch paths (LSP) concurrently. We have conducted an OPNET-based simulation study that compares the performance of the concurrent scheme with the previously published sequential two-layer recovery scheme. The study shows that the concurrent two-layer recovery scheme performs as much as forty-four percent faster than the sequential two-layer recovery scheme. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We present a fast tabu search method for the design of access tree networks. We connect a population of users to a set of switches using a variety of SONET channels on fiber optics links and ADM equipment at the nodes. We specifically take into account the economies of scale provided by the transmission systems and the transmission hierarchy of SONET systems. We describe in detail the parameters used for defining neighborhoods, penalty parameters, data structure and indicate how this can lead to substantial improvements of the overall computational time while providing costs lower than those of a more straightforward method. The article focuses on the guidelines published by the Spanish Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (CMT) on the future regulation for the next-generation access (NGA) networks in Spain. The guideline provides provisions that aim to boost optical fiber network investments in the country. It asserts that deployment of NGAs will be a challenge to the telecommunication sector. The scenario would allow speed and multiplicity of services after achieving competition in services and infrastructures.
