Diet has the potential to decrease oxidative stress and inflammation and this may be beneficial in several diseases. This study investigated the association between food quality score (FQS) with antioxidant and inflammatory properties in 171 apparently healthy young women. This cross-sectional study was conducted using a validated food frequency questionnaire to determine the dietary intake of participants. FQS was calculated by summing all the scores obtained from healthy and unhealthy food groups. The total antioxidant capacity and free radical scavenging activity of serum and urine were quantified using the ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) and α, α-diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) methods, respectively. Malondialdehyde (MDA) was measured using the formation of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS). White blood cell (WBC) and neutrophil counts, mean platelet volume (MPV) and red blood cell distribution width (RDW), were measured. Neutrophil: lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet: lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and RDW: platelet ratio (RPR) were also calculated. A high food quality (rich in fruit and vegetables, nuts, whole grain, and low intake of sweetened beverage, potato chips and fried food from outside the home) was related to lower hematological inflammatory biomarkers including WBC count, RDW, NLR, and PLR. Multivariable-adjusted odds ratios (95% CIs) demonstrated that higher FQS group (third tertile vs. first tertile) was associated with a significant lower levels of urinary FRAP (OR adj  = 0.82; 95%CI: 0.70 to 0.97), and DPPH. Background: Vitamin status and inflammatory mechanisms may be related to menstrual cycle abnormalities. We investigated the associations between serum fat soluble vitamin (vitamins A and E) concentrations and biomarkers of inflammation and antioxidant status with menstrual characteristics, primary dysmenorrhea (PD) and premenstrual syndrome (PMS) in healthy adolescents., Methods: A total of 897 adolescent girls either suffering from PMS (n = 134), PD (n = 322), PMS and PD (n = 293) or healthy adolescents (n = 148) were recruited. Serum vitamin A and E, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), antibody titers to Hsp27 (anti-Hsp27), serum prooxidant-antioxidant balance (PAB), WBC, mean platelet volume (MPV), and platelet distribution width (PDW) and RBC distribution width (RDW) were measured. Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and RDW-to-platelet ratio (RPR) were calculated., Results: Girls with long bleeding periods had lower concentrations of serum vitamin E compared to those who reported a normal period duration. There were significantly differences between the groups reporting oligomenorrhea, regular menses and polymenorrhea with respect to NLR, RPR, MPV and PDW. Logistic regression demonstrated that the presence of both PMS and PD was positively related to higher serum hs-CRP, PAB and NLR, while serum vitamin A level was inversely related to the presence of PMS., Conclusions: We found that serum vitamin A, hs-CRP, PAB and NLR are significantly associated with the presence of PMS and PD. Inflammatory processes may contribute to the etiology, symptoms and severity of menstrual disorders. Prospective studies are needed to elucidate the possibility of targeting oxidative stress and inflammatory process for the amelioration of menstrual symptoms.

Background: The inflammation and oxidative stress are thought to play an important role in the etiopathogenesis of some psychological disorders. We aimed to assess the potential relationships between serum fat soluble vitamins (Vitamins A and E), antibody titers to Hsp27 (anti-Hsp27) and hematological markers of inflammation, with mood disorders in a population of adolescent girls., Methods: A total of 563 adolescent girls (Age 12-18 years) were included in the study. The presence and severity of depression, insomnia and sleepiness were assessed using validated questionnaires. Serum vitamins A and E, anti-Hsp27 antibody titers, white blood cell, lymphocyte, neutrophil, platelet counts, and red blood cell distribution width (RDW), were also measured. Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and RDW to platelet ratio (RPR) were calculated., Results: Serum anti-HSP27 antibody titers, PLR, and RPR values was significantly higher in subjects with a high depression score compared to normal individuals (p < 0.05). However, there was no association between serum inflammatory markers concentrations and sleep disorders; although individuals with insomnia had a lower vitamin E/HDL ratio compared to healthy adolescents. In multivariate logistic regression analyses adjusted for potential confounders, anti-HSP was an independent predictor of severe depression (OR = 5.0, 95% CI: 1.6-15.7, p < 0.05)., Limitation: The cross-sectional design of study and the inclusion of only female adolescents participants are limitations., Conclusion: Our findings suggest that serum anti-HSP27 antibody titers may be useful biological marker in depressive patients. Objective: A healthy diet is a major component of lifestyle management for maintaining optimum health. Dietary carbohydrates may induce inflammation and oxidative stress. We aimed to assess the relationship between adherence to a low-carbohydrate diet pattern with oxidative stress status and a panel of blood biomarkers of inflammation in healthy young women. Methods: In this study, 171 healthy young women participated. We estimated the low-carbohydrate diet scores using a food frequency questionnaire. The total antioxidant capacity and free radical scavenging activity and malondialdehyde of serum and urine were quantified using the ferric reducing/antioxidant power, a, a-dip henyl -ß-pi crylh ydraz yl, and formation of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances methods. Several routine hematological parameters were measured including white blood cells, neutrophil counts, and mean platelet volume. Neutrophil:lymphocyte ratio and platelet:lymphocyte ratio were derived from these measures. Results: A higher low-carbohydrate diet score indicates a lower intake of carbohydrates and fiber and a higher intake of protein and fat. A greater adherence to a low-carbohydrate diet pattern was related to a lower level of hematological inflammatory indices including neutrophil count and neutrophil:lymphocyte ratio. Multivariable-adjusted odds ratios (95% CIs) demonstrated that a higher adherence to low-carbohydrate diet (third vs. first tertile) was associated with significantly higher levels of urinary a, a-dip henyl -ß-pi crylh ydraz yl (adjusted odds ratio = 1.10; 95% CI: 1.02-1.20), as well as serum ferric reducing/antioxidant power (adjusted odds ratio = 1.05; 95% CI: 1.01-1.011) and a, a-dip henyl -ß-pi crylh ydraz yl (adjusted odds ratio = 1.21; 95% CI: 1.11-1.33). Introduction: Low serum vitamin D has been shown to be a risk factor for Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19). The aim of this study was to assess the effects of high dose vitamin D supplementation on hs-CRP, ESR and clinical outcomes, including duration of hospitalization, quality of life and New York Heart Association (NYHA) Functional Classification, in adults with COVID-19. Methods: This double-blind, randomized control trial will be conducted on patients with RT-PCR and/or chest CT scan diagnosis of COVID-19 admitted in Imam Reza Hospital, Mashhad, Iran. Participants will be randomized into control and intervention groups based on randomization sampling. The intervention group will receive soft gel containing 50,000 IU vitamin D on the first day followed by 10,000 IU/day through a supplement drop daily for 29 days. The control group will receive 1000 IU vitamin D daily through supplement drop and a placebo soft gel. All participants will undergo laboratory assessment including inflammatory markers, serum 25)OH)D, complete blood count (CBC), liver and renal profile, lipid profile and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) at baseline and at day 30. The mortality rate will be recorded in both groups. Results: Data will be presented using descriptive statistics. Comparison of changes in study parameters over the study period will be performed using analysis of covariance adjusting for possible confounders. Background: Although vitamin D deficiency is associated with several inflammatory conditions, there have been few studies on the effects of vitamin D supplementation on markers of oxidative stress (OS) and inflammation. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the effects of high-dose vitamin D supplementation on heat shock protein 27 antibody (anti-Hsp27) titers in adolescent girls. Methods: Five hundred and fifty adolescent girls received vitamin D3 at a dose of 50,000 IU/week for 9 weeks. Demographic, clinical and biochemical markers including serum fasting blood glucose (FBG), lipid profile and anti-Hsp27 titers as well as hematological parameters including white blood cell (WBC) count and red blood cell (RBC) distribution width (RDW) were determined in all the subjects at baseline and at the end of the study. Results: Serum vitamin D significantly increased from 6.4 (4.2–9.6) ng/mL to 35.6 (25.8–47.5) ng/mL (p < 0.001) following the intervention. Furthermore, serum anti-Hsp27 titers were significantly lower after the 9-week vitamin D administration period (0.22 [0.12–0.33] optical density [OD] vs. 0.19 [0.11–0.31] OD; p = 0.002). A significant correlation was found between serum anti-Hsp27 and RDW (r = 0.13, p = 0.037). The reduction in RDW values after intervention was particularly evident in subjects with the greatest increase in serum vitamin D levels. Conclusions: High-dose vitamin D supplementation was found to reduce antibody titers to Hsp27. Further randomized placebo-controlled trials are warranted to determine the long-term effect of vitamin D administration on the inflammatory process especially that associated with chronic disease. Background: The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency is increasing globally and is associated with an increased risk of metabolic syndrome, autoimmune disease, and cardiovascular disease. Vit D deficiency is also associated with increased systemic inflammation. The current study aimed to determine the efficacy of low-fat milk and yogurt fortified with 1500 IU nano-encapsulated vitamin D, on systemic inflammation in abdominal obese participants.Method: This multi-center study was conducted using a 2.5-month parallel total-blind randomized clinical trial design. Two hundred and eighty nine subjects were allocated to four groups: low-fat milk fortified by 1500 IU nano-encapsulated vitamin D3 (200 mL/day). Simple milk (200 mL/day), low-fat yogurt fortified by 1500 IU nano-encapsulated vitamin D3 (150 g/day), and simple yogurt (150 g/day).Results: The results showed that serum levels of neutrophils, lymphocytes, platelets and red blood cell distribution width (RDW) were significantly lower before and after the intervention in fortified dairy groups. The results showed that serum levels of neutrophils, lymphocytes, platelets, and RDW before and after intervention in the fortified dairy groups were significantly lower (p < 0.05). The values of = neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelets to lymphocyte ratio, and RDW to platelets ratio (RPR) reduced significantly in the fortification group (p < 0.05).Conclusion: Fortification with nano-encapsulated vitamin D3 of dairy products may decrease inflammation in individuals with abdominal obesity. Background Depression and anxiety are two common mood disorders that are both linked to systemic inflammation. Increased white blood cell (WBC) count and red cell distribution width (RDW) are associated with negative clinical outcomes in a wide variety of pathological conditions. WBC is a non-specific inflammatory marker and RDW is also strongly related to other inflammatory markers. Therefore, we proposed that there might be an association between these hematological inflammatory markers and depression/anxiety symptoms. Objective The primary objective of this study was to examine the association between depression/anxiety symptoms and hematological inflammatory markers including WBC and RDW in a large population-based study. Methods Symptoms of depression and anxiety and a complete blood count (CBC) were measured in 9274 participants (40% males and 60% females) aged 35–65 years, enrolled in a population-based cohort (MASHAD) study in north-eastern Iran. Symptoms of depression and anxiety were evaluated using the Beck Depression and Anxiety Inventories. Results The mean WBC count increased with increasing severity of symptoms of depression and anxiety among men. Male participants with severe depression had significantly higher values of RDW (p < 0.001); however, this relationship was less marked among women (p = 0.004). In addition, men (but not women) with severe anxiety symptoms had significantly higher values of RDW (p < 0.001). Moreover, there was a negative association between red blood cell (RBC) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) and symptoms of depression/anxiety. Conclusion Our results suggest that higher depression and anxiety scores are associated with an enhanced inflammatory state, as assessed by higher hematological inflammatory markers including WBC and RDW, even after adjusting for potential confounders.
