Objective: Inflammation has an important place in chronic otitis media with effusion (COME) etiology. Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are simple and cheap tests that show inflammation and can be calculated by all physicians. In our study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between COME and NLR and PLR parameters. Methods: The study was performed with the pediatric patient group consisting of 77 patients who got diagnosis of COME and the control group consisting of 62 healthy children whose age, gender and demographical characteristics were concordant with the patient group. The patient and control groups were compared statistically in terms of NLR and PLR values. Results: Mean neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio value was found as 1.43±0.54 in the patient group and as 1.16±0.51 in the control group (p<0.001). Mean PLR value was found as 113.78±35.78 in the patient group and as 103.61±32.32 in the control group (p= 0.084). Conclusion: Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and PLR values were high in COME. It was shown for the first time that NLR can be used as a diagnostic parameter in children with COME. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Bell's palsy is the most frequent cause of unilateral facial paralysis. Inflammation is thought to play an important role in the pathogenesis of Bell's palsy. Aims: Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are simple and inexpensive tests which are indicative of inflammation and can be calculated by all physicians. The aim of this study was to reveal correlations of Bell's palsy and degree of paralysis with NLR and PLR. Study Design: Case-control study. Methods: The retrospective study was performed January 2010 and December 2013. Ninety-nine patients diagnosed as Bell's palsy were included in the Bell's palsy group and ninety-nine healthy individuals with the same demographic characteristics as the Bell's palsy group were included in the control group. As a result of analyses, NLR and PLR were calculated. Results: The mean NLR was 4.37 in the Bell's palsy group and 1.89 in the control group with a statistically significant difference (p<0.001). The mean PLR was 137.5 in the Bell's palsy group and 113.75 in the control group with a statistically significant difference (p=0.008). No statistically significant relation was detected between the degree of facial paralysis and NLR and PLR. Conclusion: The NLR and the PLR were significantly higher in patients with Bell's palsy. This is the first study to reveal a relation between Bell's palsy and PLR. NLR and PLR can be used as auxiliary parameters in the diagnosis of Bell's palsy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OBJECTIVE: The etiopathogenesis of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is not clearly defined. Inflammation is being emphasized in its etiology. Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are the parameters that show inflammation that can be obtained easily without additional cost. In this study, we aimed at delineating the relationship between SSNHL and the inflammation markers NLR and PLR. MATERIALS and METHODS: This study was performed with 102 patients diagnosed with SSNHL and 119 sex- and age-matched controls. All subjects in the study and the control group had their complete blood count (CBC) results, which were evaluated retrospectively to calculate NLR and PLR values. All patients underwent an audiological examination on the 1st, 3rd, 10th, and 30th days of the hearing loss. All patients received 1 mg/kg IV prednisolone treatment in tapered amounts to be completed in 15 days. Based on the improvements seen in the audiograms, the patients were divided into two groups: responders and non-responders to treatment. RESULTS: PLR and NLR values of the patient group were significantly higher than in the control group (p<0.001, p<0.001). Furthermore, patients who responded to treatment had significantly higher NLR values than those who did not respond (p=0.010). CONCLUSION: In this study, NLR and PLR values were found to be significantly high in SSNHL patients. PLR value was investigated for the first time in the literature in SSNHL patients. NLR and PLR values are parameters that aid in the diagnosis of SSNHL. Moreover, SSNHL patients who had higher NLR values responded to the treatment better. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
