This paper is intended as an aid to those researching the history of Quaker involvement in industry and commerce, with a regional focus on Yorkshire .A selection of archives of businesses founded and run by Quakers, as well as of family and personal papers of Friends in business are surveyed here. Both the historical context and a summary of the surviving sources are given for each collection surveyed, with details of where the material is held. Examples have been chosen to represent the Quaker contribution to particular trades and industries, and in some cases, to promote collections which have recently been catalogued or are little known. This paper reports on a scenario analysis of material and energy flows through the UK iron and steel sector for the period from 1994 to 2019. Following an earlier paper looking at historical flows through the sector, the authors extrapolate a set of hypothetical scenarios for the future based on varying assumptions about critical parameters. These parameters include: the demand for steel goods, technological improvements within steel production processes, and changes in the ratio of primary (basic oxygen furnace) to secondary (electric arc furnace) steel production. The hypothetical scenarios are then used to forecast a range of possible values for the exergy consumption associated with the UK steel sector for the period between 1994 and 2019. The results indicate that exergy consumption from steel is likely to fallby 15-70% of 1994 levels by 2019. Technological improvement alone does not result in significant reductions. In the light of the significant role played by corporate interviews in the construction of contemporary economic geographies, this paper suggests that the practices of corporate interviewing in the researchprocess demand critical reflection. These practices are reflected upon in the context of a comparative study of retailer/manufacturer power relations in the UK and USA. In particular, attention is paid to the ways in which corporate interviews actively construct knowledge ofcontrasting own-brand supply relationships in these national economies. To do this, the paper addresses the following issues: (i) the embeddedness of corporate interviews in a transforming economic geography; (ii) the processes of identifying, and gaining access to, own-brand supply networks in the UK and USA; (iii) the use of materials resulting from corporate interviews to produce nuanced understandings of own-brand supply relationships; (iv) the adoption of an appropriate textual strategy for writing such interview-based material into economic geography. This article examines the interrelationship of sport, community and industry in west Dunbartonshire during the period 1870–1900. During the early years of the Scottish Football Association (SFA)– the 1870s and 1880s – the county's main football clubs were amongst the SFA's most dominant, regularly challenging Glasgow's major clubs for supremacy in the Scottish Cup. These clubs were part of an industrial landscape, based as they were in shipbuilding and textile communities significantly comprised of Irish and Highland Scottish migrant populations. Local industrialists acted as patrons out of a paternalistic desire to mould the message of football. Their attempts were nevertheless undermined by the existence of professionalism in the game, which in turn encouraged an alternate method of social mobility. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The literature on value impact of diversification decisions has focused on US firms and has examined industrial rather than geographic diversification. This study exploits the Lang and Stulz (1994) , Berger and Ofek (1995) and Bodnar et al. (1999) methodologies and controls for form of diversification in assessing value impact for a sample of UK firms, for the period 1996-2000. Using an adjusted value metric that controls for industry effects, we report a significant and perverse geographic discount of 14%, and no systematic industrial value impact, suggesting that sector characteristics may be a significant driver of diversification choice for UK firms.
