1. Molecular genotyping of ABO blood groups in some population groups from India.

Abstract

Background & objectives: Indian population is characterized by the presence of various castes and tribal groups. Various genetic polymorphisms have been used to differentiate among these groups. Amongst these, the ABO blood group system has been extensively studied. There is no information on molecular genotyping of ABO blood groups from India. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to characterize the common A, B and O alleles by molecular analysis in some Indian population groups. Methods: One hundred samples from the mixed population from Mumbai, 101 samples from the Dhodia tribe and 100 samples from the Parsi community were included in this study. Initially, the samples were phenotyped by standard serologic techniques. PCR followed by single strand conformational polymorphsim (SSCP) was used for molecular ABO genotyping. Samples showing atypical SSCP patterns were further analysed by DNA sequencing to characterize rare alleles. Results: Seven common ABO alleles with 19 different genotypes were found in the mixed population. The Dhodias showed 12 different ABO genotypes and the Parsis revealed 15 different ABO genotypes with six common ABO alleles identified in each of them. Two rare alleles were also identified. Interpretation & conclusions: This study reports the distribution of molecular genotypes of ABO alleles among some population groups from India. Considering the extremely heterogeneous nature of the Indian population, in terms of various genotype markers like blood groups, red cell enzymes, etc., many more ABO alleles are likely to be encountered. Abstract

BackgroundThe Parsis, one of the smallest religious community in the world, reside in South Asia. Previous genetic studies on them, although based on low resolution markers, reported both Iranian and Indian ancestries. To understand the population structure and demographic history of this group in more detail, we analyzed Indian and Pakistani Parsi populations using high-resolution autosomal and uniparental (Y-chromosomal and mitochondrial DNA) markers. Additionally, we also assayed 108 mitochondrial DNA markers among 21 ancient Parsi DNA samples excavated from Sanjan, in present day Gujarat, the place of their original settlement in India.ResultsOur extensive analyses indicated that among present-day populations, the Parsis are genetically closest to Middle Eastern (Iranian and the Caucasus) populations rather than their South Asian neighbors. They also share the highest number of haplotypes with present-day Iranians and we estimate that the admixture of the Parsis with Indian populations occurred ∼1,200 years ago. Enriched homozygosity in the Parsi reflects their recent isolation and inbreeding. We also observed 48% South-Asian-specific mitochondrial lineages among the ancient samples, which might have resulted from the assimilation of local females during the initial settlement.ConclusionsWe show that the Parsis are genetically closest to the Neolithic Iranians, followed by present-day Middle Eastern populations rather than those in South Asia and provide evidence of sex-specific admixture from South Asians to the Parsis. Our results are consistent with the historically-recorded migration of the Parsi populations to South Asia in the 7thcentury and in agreement with their assimilation into the Indian sub-continent’s population and cultural milieu “like sugar in milk”. Moreover, in a wider context our results suggest a major demographic transition in West Asia due to Islamic-conquest.

Abstract

The award-winning novelist Rohinton Mistry is recognised as one of the most important contemporary writers of postcolonial literature. His subtle yet powerful narratives engross general readers, excite critical acclaim and form staple elements of literature courses across the world. This study - the first of its kind on this writer - will provide scholars and students with an insight into the key features of Mistry's work. Peter Morey suggests how the author's writing can be read in terms of recent Indian political history, his native Zoroastrian culture and ethos, and the experience of migration which now sees him living in Canada. The texts are viewed through the lens of diaspora and minority discourse theories to show how Mistry's writing is illustrative of marginal positions in relation to sanctioned national identities. In addition, Mistry utilises and blends the conventions of oral storytelling common to the Persian and South Asian traditions with nods in the direction of the canonical figures of modern European literature, sometimes reworking and reinflecting their registers and preoccupations to create a distinctive voice redolent of the hybrid inheritance of Parsi culture and of the postcolonial predicament more generally.

Abstract

This dissertation examines how and why one single corporation, Tata, acquired exceptional influence on economic and political life in modern India. It does so by charting the expansion of Tata from one of many merchant families, making their fortunes in the cotton and opium trades across the Indian Ocean in the mid-nineteenth century, to the commanding heights of the Indian national economy, with diverse interests in steel, hydroelectricity, chemicals, and aviation by the time of independence in 1947. In parallel, Tata-funded institutions served as conduits for transnational technology and knowledge flows, notably in the realms of engineering, social science, medicine, and atomic research. My analysis shows that private corporations like Tata played a crucial, autonomous role in the construction of national economies – at times acting like a state themselves, at other times in direct opposition to state aims. I argue that Tata’s distinct nation-building role was made possible by three principal factors: extraterritorial financial connections, especially with East Asia and the United States; quasi-sovereign control over land, labor and natural resources within India; and networks of scientific and technical expertise cultivated through strategic philanthropy. In the context of postcolonial development, these converging forms of material and knowledge infrastructure took on heightened significance, but also generated lasting contradictions between the state and private capital across the key temporal divides of decolonization and market liberalization. The dissertation draws on public and private archives in the UK, US, and India, and makes use of the near-complete business records of the Tata firm. Blending economic, cultural, legal, and intellectual history, it primarily contributes to the historiographies of modern South Asia and global capitalism.
