Watermarks reflect the very stuff of the origin, date, distribution, composition, history, and culture of paper-based items. Digital imaging of watermarks releases the research potential as widely as the internet itself. One example is the digital “fingerprinting” of paper in order to enhance the security of items, such as valuable and vulnerable maps. Revealing Watermarks offers detailed instructions of this process, through the author's own PaperPrint method, and by means of the case study of a sixteenth-century watermark—a crown from the arms of Danzig—it illustrates how cultural influences spread and have endured across the centuries, in this case from Sweden to Russia.

Advances in signal and image processing together with increasing computing power are bringing mobile technology closer to applications in a variety of domains like automotive, health, telecommunication, multimedia, entertainment and many others. The development of these leading applications, involving a large diversity of algorithms (e.g. signal, image, video, 3D, communication, cryptography) is classically divided into three consecutive steps: a theoretical study of the algorithms, a study of the target architecture, and finally the implementation. Such a linear design flow is reaching its limits due to intense pressure on design cycle and strict performance constraints. The approach, called Algorithm-Architecture Matching, aims to leverage design flows with a simultaneous study of both algorithmic and architectural issues, taking into account multiple design constraints, as well as algorithm and architecture optimizations, that couldn't be achieved otherwise if considered separately. Introducing new design methodologies is mandatory when facing the new emerging applications as for example advanced mobile communication or graphics using sub-micron manufacturing technologies or 3D-Integrated Circuits. This diversity forms a driving force for the future evolutions of embedded system designs methodologies.The main expectations from system designers'point of view are related to methods, tools and architectures supporting application complexity and design cycle reduction. Advanced optimizations are essential to meet design constraints and to enable a wide acceptance of these new technologies.Algorithm-Architecture Matching for Signal and Image Processing presents a collection of selected contributions from both industry and academia, addressing different aspects of Algorithm-Architecture Matching approach ranging from sensors to architectures design. As a new interdisciplinary research area, “image-based geometric modeling and mesh generation” integrates image processing, geometric modeling and mesh generation with finite element method (FEM) to solve problems in computational biomedicine, materials sciences and engineering. It is well known that FEM is currently well-developed and efficient, but mesh generation for complex geometries (e.g., the human body) still takes about 80% of the total analysis time and is the major obstacle to reduce the total computation time. It is mainly because none of the traditional approaches is sufficient to effectively construct finite element meshes for arbitrarily complicated domains, and generally a great deal of manual interaction is involved in mesh generation.This contributed volume, the first for such an interdisciplinary topic, collects the latest research by experts in this area. This in-depth research study discusses whether 3D TV will become a new trend in the consumers'living rooms or if it is just a hype that will fail to establish itself. The study contains both extensive market research as well as target group research among the American population. Both parts of the study deal with the market situation of 3D TVs within the United States in 2011, and an extensive analysis of both studies provides in-depth insight into a potential future of the 3D TV market in the coming years. In 2010 only 3% of US households had purchased a 3D TV. According to E. Rogers'book ‘Diffusion of Innovation'whose theory is used as a guideline throughout the whole research paper, those 3% can be identified as belonging to the category of innovators. To incorporate other categories of the adopter categorization, the 3D TV technology has to face economic, sociological and technological challenges. Those challenges as well as the trends and developments influence the adoption of the technology. E. Rogers discusses these influencing characteristics in his work and groups them into five categories: relative advantage, compatibility, complexibility, observability and trialability. Based on Rogers'book, this study determines in how far those characteristics favor or disfavor the adoption process of 3D TV and how current trends and developments within the 3D TV sector might improve this process. These conclusions are then used in a target group research in order to determine whether they are feasible and will lead to a higher adoption rate of the technology within the next 3 to 5 years. Consequently, this research paper can act as a guide for both TV manufacturers and TV content producers that invest or plan to invest into 3D TV. However, the main purpose of the study is to be the starting point for marketing managers of those companies that already have started investing in 3D technology. The research gives insight into how the adoption process can be improved, and it can, therefore, be used as a foundation for a successful marketing plan.
