Investigating the concept of landscape through its representation is a multidisciplinary theme that can reveal much of the human trajectory and how it relates to, perceives, and interferes with its surroundings. The investigation proposed here aims to point out possibilities of analysis from the selection of some pieces of art, paintings, in which the landscape is represented, either as a background, either as the main theme or in dialogue with the other elements. The way it appears highlighted, its colors, compositional relationships and with other elements are fundamental to understand how the category of landscape would perceive, understood, and represented. In the end it is possible to understand it as part of a text not only in what could be readly seen, but beyond it. For this, the images were from Panosfsky’s Iconography and Iconology, extrapolating it also in the light of Cassirer, supported by Cosgrove’s geographical reflections, especially in his book ‘Palladiam Landscape’. This article sees the light as the result of a research accomplished at the Xaverian Historic Archives, in Bogotá. The investigation allowed the author to have direct access to the documentary files gathered from different national and international archives, on the goods and chattels which made up the decoration of the church owned by the Society of Jesus in Santa Fe de Bogotá. The actual enclosure, in its decoration, has been modified over the years, having been adapted to the taste of the epoch and to the historic circumstances by which it has been marked, like the fact that it was converted into pro-Cathedral, after the expulsion of the Jesuits from the Kingdom of Spain, in the latter part of the 18th century. Thus, the claim of this article is to try to unveil the first level of the theological-spiritual and didactic reading of the original decorative ensemble of the temple that belonged and still belongs, to the Society of Jesus. Therefore, we will realize a reflection on how the image, the art, that was used always by the Catholic Church to transmit the faith, is a fundamental tool to express a theological content which could be understood by the persons who contemplated it; and we will propose the possible keys of reading, obviously, from the point of view of the Ignatian spirituality, so as to explain from it, the message that the Jesuits were sending to the Bogotanian people, or to any other faithful, who would enter into the sacred place. El presente trabajo pretende introducirse en el proceso cognoscitivo de paradigmas y estructuras teocráticas, posiblemente politeístas —representadas en el código iconográfico, iconológico y morfoespacial— a través del estudio de un monolito de andesita procedente del sitio arqueológico de Wapula (Morona Santiago, Ecuador). La pieza, sin contexto arqueológico conocido pero con una clara iconografía shuar, ha sido seleccionada para hacer un acercamiento a la cosmovisión de este pueblo y la importancia de la figura del uwishin en la misma. El estudio de estas piezas contribuye a la puesta en valor y conservación preventiva de uno de los más importantes bienes culturales del enclave amazónico ecuatoriano. El monolito en cuestión permite entender la cosmovisión del pueblo shuar a través del estudio de sus características, lo cual se vio ampliado con un análisis químico-mineralógico realizado en el Instituto Universitario de Restauración del Patrimonio de la Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (España). ENGLISH: This article is intended to introduce readers to the cognitive processes of potentially polytheistic theocratic structures and paradigms represented in the iconographic, iconological, and morpho-spatial characteristics of an andesite monolith from the archaeological site of Wapula (Morona Santiago, Ecuador). The piece, whose archaeological context is unknown but whose iconography is clearly Shuar, was selected in order to study the worldview of Wapula and the importance of the uwishin figure there. The study of these figures contributes to the valuation and preventative conservation of one of the most important pieces of cultural heritage in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Our analysis of allowed us to understand the Shuar worldview through the analysis of its features; this was amplified by a chemical-mineralogical analysis accomplished in the University Institute of Heritage Restoration, Polytechnic University of Valencia (Spain).

Architecture is a language that expresses itself through the form, structure, color, texture and constructed elements that compose it. In buildings, these elements are organized in a way that provide order so that the observer can recognize them and interpret them, as well as having meanings and symbolisms that derive from the pure function of the property. Religious buildings are of great importance for the functioning, history and meaning of cities. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Tepic, Nayarit, is considered a relevant historical monument and a landmark around which the sanctuary neighborhood is constituted. In this article, the meaning and language of said building are presented in depth, including the analysis of the areas that compose it, its architectural elements, and those that integrate its interior setting utilizing Erwin Panofsky's iconology method. 13. Montes sagrados: uma viagem pela iconologia portuguesa

Mountains have always fascinated the human being since before the lógos was put into effect, transmitting fear, devotion, and respect. Due to this, several mythical-religious interpretations were created, having such elevations as crucial elements: either as the representation of the deity, its abode, or places for its theophany. Thus, like the Judaism from which it emerged, Christianity was not unaffected by this pilgrimage to holy places, many of which were hills. Around 1000 AD, Christian pilgrims longed to head to Jerusalem as a way of atoning for their sins at the turn of the new millennium that was approaching. However, the Ottoman Turks made this process difficult, leading the European faithful to seek new alternatives to express their faith, such as the sacred mounts. Thus, this article aims at understanding how this process took place, seeking to rescue iconographic and iconological elements that were dispersed due to the action of time, so that Brazilian researchers and students may have access to this logo-image source also present in our artistic expression. For this, special logo-image research was undertaken, based on the iconographic considerations of Cesare Ripa (2007a, 2007b). As montanhas sempre fascinaram os homens desde antes da efetivação do lógos, transmitindo-lhes medo, devoção e respeito. Devido a isso, diversas interpretações mítico-religiosas foram criadas, tendo tais elevações como elementos-chave: seja como representação da divindade, sua morada, ou locais para suas teofanias. Assim, o cristianismo, como o judaísmo de onde surgiu, não ficou alheio a essa peregrinação aos locais sagrados, muitos dos quais montes. Por volta do ano 1000 de nossa era, os peregrinos cristãos ansiavam por dirigir-se a Jerusalém, como forma de expiar seus pecados na virada do novo milênio que se aproximava, no entanto, os turcos otomanos dificultaram tal acesso, levando os fiéis europeus a buscarem novas alternativas para expressar sua fé, como os montes sagrados. Dessa maneira, este artigo visa a compreender como se efetivou este processo, buscando resgatar elementos iconográficos e iconológicos que se dispersaram devido à ação do tempo, a fim de que pesquisadores e estudantes brasileiros possam ter acesso a esse manancial logo-imagético também presente em nosso fazer artístico. Para isso, empreendeu-se, de modo especial, uma pesquisa logo-imagética, a partir das considerações iconográficas de Cesare Ripa (2007a, 2007b).

Este artículo analiza una forma de transmisión iconográfica que se origina en una fuente artística del pasado, el bodegón manierista y barroco, que es readaptado y reformulado por las fuerzas de seguridad para transmitir un mensaje comunicativo de gran impacto: los objetos decomisados en una redada policial son presentados con una forma artística, que llamamos «bodegón policial», que incita inmediatamente al sentido de culpabilidad. Esta práctica sistemática de los diversos cuerpos policiales españoles (Guardia Civil, Policía Nacional, Mossos d’Esquadra, Ertzaintza) nos presenta un método de utilización de un motivo iconográfico como forma comunicativa de un poder de Estado. Este artículo sintetiza algunos de los resultados del proyecto de investigación MOVEP (Los motivos visuales en la esfera pública. Producción y circulación de imágenes del poder en España, 2011-2017), con referencia CSO2017-88876-P, que tiene como objetivo principal analizar la recurrencia, producción y circulación de motivos específicos relacionados con la representación del poder en imágenes aparecidas en la prensa, los medios digitales, el cine y la televisión. This article analyzes a form of iconographic transmission that originates from artistic sources of the past, the Mannerist and Baroque still lifes, which is readjusted and reformulated by the security forces to convey a communicative message of significant impact: the confiscated objects in a police raid are presented in an art form we call «police still life», that immediately incites the sense of guilt. This systematic practice of various Spanish police forces (Civil Guard, National Police, Mossos d’Esquadra, Ertzaintza) presents a method of using an iconographic motif as a communicative form of state power. This article summarizes some of the results of the research project MOVEP (The visual motifs in the public sphere. Production and circulation of images of power in Spain, 2011-2017), with reference CSO2017-88876-P, whose main objective is to analyze the recurrence, production, and circulation of specific motifs related to the representation of power in images appearing in the press, digital media, cinema, and television.

The present paper aims to propose an analysis of the trio Sá, Rodrix & Guarabyra's long-playing record covers made in Brazil in the 1970's. Not only is an iconological analysis in the sense of description searched, but also an iconological approach. Such analysis is grounded on the art historian Erwin Panofsky's methodological suppositions, which propose an image interpretation. This paper also interacts with the historians Peter Burke and Eduardo França Paiva who highlight, in their methodologies, the possibilities of interpretation and the work with visual sources. Resumen: Los historiadores de la educación están prestando cada vez más atención al interior de las instituciones educativas. Pues bien, una de las fuentes históricas más importantes de que disponemos para abordar esa tarea es la constituida por el conjunto de los libros utilizados en las instituciones educativas, un dispositivo escolar textual e icónico. A este interés suscitado entre la comunidad de historiadores se une una tendencia que incluye, en los trabajos historiográficos las imágenes como fuente de estudio. Es en este marco donde se inserta este trabajo que tiene como objetivo plantear una metodología de análisis que tenga en cuenta los modos de interrelación entre la expresión y las formas de representación y el contenido en los textos escolares editados en España desde mediados del siglo XX y principios del siglo XXI para transmitir contenidos, valores, ideologías y creencias. Resumo: Os historiadores da educação estão se voltando cada vez mais para o estudo das instituições escolares, sendo os livros escolares, fontes históricas relevantes nessa questão ao se constituírem como dispositivos textuais e iconográficos. Assim, a comunidade de pesquisadores se utiliza tanto dos conteúdos dos livros como das imagens, como fonte para conhecer o passado históricos dos processos educativos. Tendo isso em questão, neste trabalho busca-se propor uma metodologia de análise que leve em conta os modos de interrelação entre a expressão, formas de representação e o conteúdo dos textos escolares editados na Espanha entre a metade do século XX e início do século XXI, destinados a transmitir conteúdos, valores, ideologias e crenças. Abstract: Historians of education are paying more and more attention within educational institutions. Well, one of the most important historical sources that we have to deal with this task is that constituted by all the books used in educational institutions, a textual and iconic school device. To this interest aroused among the community of historians joins a tendency that includes in the historiographical works the images as a source of study. It is in this framework that this work is inserted, which aims to propose an analysis methodology that takes into account the ways of interrelation between expression and forms of representation and content in textbooks published in Spain since the mid-twentieth century and Early 21st century to convey content, values, ideologies and beliefs.

The Society of Jesus’s church in Granada constitutes one of the main examples of Andalusian baroque. This is thanks to its artistic and stylistic features. Nevertheless, the historiography has been excessively focused on certain special items, which has caused a necessary reinterpretation of other parts much more unknown. For that reason, the following paper offers a new iconographic and iconological analysis of the sacristy’s vault (1617-1620), whereby we are able to approach to the establishment of the Jesuit doctrine in Granada at the early seventeenth century. La iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús de Granada constituye uno de los ejemplos capitales del barroco andaluz gracias a sus particularidades artísticas y estilísticas. Sin embargo, la excesiva focalización hacia determinados elementos singulares de la misma por parte de la historiografía motiva una necesaria relectura de otros mucho más desconocidos. Por ello, el presente artículo ofrece un novedoso análisis iconográfico e iconológico de la bóveda de la sacristía (1617-1620), mediante el cual podemos acercarnos a la implantación de la doctrina jesuítica en la Granada de los inicios del siglo XVII.

Historians of education are paying more and more attention within educational institutions. Well, one of the most important historical sources that we have to deal with this task is that constituted by all the books used in educational institutions, a textual and iconic school device. To this interest aroused among the community of historians joins a tendency that includes in the historiographical works the images as a source of study. It is in this framework that this work is inserted, which aims to propose an analysis methodology that takes into account the ways of interrelation between expression and forms of representation and content intextbookspublished in Spain since the mid-twentieth century and Early 21st century to convey content, values, ideologies and beliefs Los historiadores de la educación están prestando cada vez más atención al interior de las instituciones educativas. Pues bien, una de las fuentes históricas más importantes de que disponemos para abordar esa tarea es la constituida por el conjunto de los libros utilizados en las instituciones educativas, un dispositivo escolar textual e icónico. A este interés suscitado entre la comunidad de historiadores se une una tendencia que incluye, en los trabajos historiográficos las imágenes como fuente de estudio. Es en este marco donde se inserta este trabajo que tiene como objetivo plantear una metodología de análisis que tenga en cuenta los modos de interrelación entre la expresión y las formas de representación y el contenido en los textos escolares editados en España desde mediados del siglo XX y principios del siglo XXI para transmitir contenidos, valores, ideologías y creencias Os historiadores da educação estão se voltando cada vez mais para o estudo das instituições escolares, sendo os livros escolares, fontes históricas relevantes nessa questão ao se constituírem como dispositivos textuais e iconográficos. This dissertation seeks to present the iconography of the imaginary Josephine as the materialization of the sacred in the context of religious and sacred arts and its symbolic imagination, which is in the attributes and adornments that make up its iconographic ensemble, as well as its polysemy and the various perspectives. that the image shows within the scope of Brazilian popular Catholic religiosity. In this research, through the multidisciplinarity sought through the dialogues established over the field of Religious Studies, we list three Josephine models as significant representatives of its time, regarding the most evident aspects on the surface of an image: artistic school, its constructive technique and its Support. Therefore, Saint Joseph in Boots, Saint Joseph the Worker and Saint Joseph Sleeping were chosen as representatives of distinct periods, their imaginary and pertinences. In addition, we drew a brief ascension walk of the Josephine image highlighting part of the various titles, patronages and invocations granted by the Catholic Church. In order to fulfill our proposed objectives, we opted for a qualitative research with bibliographic approach, reading the highlighted images using Panofsky's iconological method for the analysis of the work of art, and then classifying each image according to Gilbert Durand's symbolic imagination. Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES Essa disertação tem por objetivo apresentar a iconografia da imaginária josefina como a materialização do sagrado no contexto das artes religiosa e sacra e o seu imaginário simbólico, que está nos atributos e adereços que compõem o seu conjunto iconográfico, além da sua polissemia e as diversas perspectivas que a imagem mostra no âmbito da religiosidade católica popular brasileira. Nessa busca, por meio multidisciplinaridade permitida nos diálogos estabelecidos na Área das Ciências das Religiões, elencamos três modelos josefinos como representantes significativos da sua época, no que diz respeito aos aspectos mais evidentes à superfície de uma imagem: escola artística, sua técnica construtiva e o suporte. Assim, foram escolhidos São José de Botas, São José Carpinteiro e São José Dormindo como representantes de períodos distintos, seus imaginários e pertinências. Além do mais, traçamos uma breve caminhada ascensional da imagem josefina evidenciando parte dos diversos títulos, patronatos e invocações concedido pela Igreja Católica. Para cumprir com os objetivos propostos, optamos pela pesquisa qualitativa com abordagem bibliográfica, fazendo uma leitura das imagens destacadas com a utilização do método iconológico de Panofsky para análise da obra de arte e, posteriormente classificamos cada imagem segundo a imaginação simbólica de Gilbert Durand.

The Church of Santa Baia de Banga, O Carballiño (Ourense) stands out due to the decoration of the vault of the presbytery: it displays emblems drawn from Alciato’s Emblemata that were moralized from a Christian point of view, thus defi ning a sacred discourse in keeping with its location. This paper aims to reconstruct the “lost piece of evidence” of its iconographic programme; in order to do so, I will employ the clues that the mastermind himself left to ease its interpretation and that correspond to the Bible verses of the four prophets also depicted in the vault: Jeremiah, Isaiah, Micah, and Nahum. These verses recall a key message of the Christian catechesis: those living in sin are to be inevitably punished, although they may be saved thanks to the Mercy of God if they repent and find the way back to him. On the contrary, if they persist in their attitude, they are to suffer the eternal damnation.La iglesia de Santa Baia de Banga, O Carballiño (Ourense) es un caso singular ya que tiene la bóveda de su capilla mayor decorada con emblemas inspirados en la Emblemata de Alciato, los cuales fueron cristianamente moralizados, conformando un relato sacro, acorde al decoro de su ubicación. En el presente estudio trataré de reconstruir “la prueba perdida” de su programa iconográfico, para lo que utilizaré las pistas que el propio autor del programa dejó para su interpretación reproduciendo los versículos de los profetas Jeremías, Isaías, Miqueas y Nahúm, en los que se sustancia un mensaje clave de la catequesis cristiana: aquellos que viven en el pecado serán castigados indefectiblemente, aunque podrán salvarse, merced a la misericordia de Dios, si se arrepienten y vuelven a él. The research project is born analyzing the potential that has the design identity to generate a cultural product that is representative of a territory. Ecuadorian ancestral Aboriginal peoples occurred in the past, and even maintained and recreated to present an important cultural heritage that is the deepest identity production achieved in the country. This heritage, particularly the iconographic representations, have enormous potential to become the basis for an original, coherent, creating high cultural and aesthetic value. Unfortunately not a systematization process is done and now is emerging handicraft production to submit a thorough investigation to transmit culture and worldview originating. In the event we have seen in the line of innovation in entrepreneurship and MIPyME. Likewise we perceive a flaw in developing products graphical distribution representing the culture of a territory, which can be translated into tourist souvenir with identity, the idea is also to revitalize the culture with fresh new icons to be applied to objects (handicrafts), in local architecture and urbanism. In describing these iconographic and symbolic underpinnings creative activity with new artistic language but with cultural and historical roots it is possible, seeking thetransfer of historical memory, thus creating cultural identity, encouraging tourism, culture, and thus local development and regional. Precisely the project contributes to creating graphic patterns, design prototypes are generated, enabling future production semindustrial them. The incorporation of ancestral knowledge and identity to create contemporary design patterns that can be expressed in the production of craft products in different ranges that allow small businesses produce properly. El proyecto de investigación nace analizando las potencialidades que tiene el diseño con identidad para generar un producto cultural que sea representativo de un territorio. Los pueblos ancestrales ecuatorianos produjeron en el pasado aborigen, e incluso mantuvieron y recrearon hasta el presente un importante patrimonio cultural que constituye la producción identitaria más profunda lograda en el país. Este patrimonio, particularmente las representaciones iconográficas, tienen la enorme potencialidad de convertirse en la base para una creación original, coherente, de alto valor cultural y estético. Lastimosamente no se realizado un proceso de sistematización y en la actualidad es incipiente la producción artesanal que presenten una investigación rigurosa para transmitir la cultura y cosmovisión originarias. Dentro del evento lo hemos considerado en la línea de Innovación en los emprendimientos y las MIP y ME. Igualmente percibimos una falencia al desarrollar productos de difusión gráfica que representen la cultura de un territorio, la cual se puede plasmar en souvenir turísticos con identidad, la idea es además revitalizar la cultura con nuevos iconos nuevos a ser aplicados en objetos (artesanías), en la arquitectura local y el urbanismo. Al describir estos sustentos iconográficos y simbólicos se posibilita la actividad creativa con lenguaje artístico nuevo pero con raíces culturales e históricas, buscando la transferencia de la memoria histórica, para así crear identidad cultural, incentivando el turismo, la cultura, y por ende el desarrollo local y regional. Precisamente el proyecto aporta con la creación de patrones gráficos, se generan prototipos de diseño, posibilitando su futura producción semindustrial de ellos. La incorporación de los saberes ancestrales y la identidad para crear patrones de diseño contemporáneo que puede ser expresado en producción de productos en diferentes gamas artesanales que permita que pequeños emprendimientos produzcan de manera adecuada.

[EN] This MA Project analyzes the watermarks found in 14th century notarial documents in the Royal College Seminary of Corpus Christi Archives in Valencia. Starting with a literature search, this research focuses on the iconographic and iconological aspects of the figures represented in the selected watermarks, which are an accurate portrayal of the thought of the age in which they were created. Equally interesting, this stdy raises the current condition of the document studied and evaluated both the storage archival materials as well as the environmental conditions of the room where they are stored. Finally, preventive conservation guidelines to preserve the documents are presented., [ES] El presente trabajo analiza las filigranas encontradas en documentos notariales del siglo XIV en el Archivo del Real Colegio Seminario Corpus Christi de Valencia. A partir del vaciado documental, la investigación se centra en los aspectos iconográficos e iconológicos de los motivos representados en estas filigranas, retrato fiel del pensamiento de la época en la que fueron creados. Así mismo, el presente estudio plantea el estado de conservación actual de los documentos revisados, y lleva a cabo un análisis tanto de los materiales empleados en el almacenaje de la obra como de las condiciones de la sala de Archivo, proponiendo medidas de conservación preventiva encaminadas a la prolongación en el tiempo de estos documentos

Iconographical study of the frescoes of the cupola of the Basílica de la Virgen de los Desamparados (Valencia), painted by Antonio Palomino between 1701 and 1704. The author analyses the historical and allegorical aspects of the ensemble. The historical aspect is represented by miracles of the Virgin depicted on cartouches simulating monochrome bas-reliefs. The allegorical aspect appears in personifications of certain invocations of the Litany of Loreto (Salus, Refugium, Solatium and Auxilium), two others refer to the Virgin of the Destitute (Diligentia and Pietas), and as a corollary, the emblem of the crow feeding its young with its own blood, under the motto Desertorum Protectio. This article continues and completes “La Cúpula de la Basílica de la Virgen de los Desamparados de Valencia (I): El ámbito de la Gloria” (AEA, nº 317).Estudio iconográfico de los frescos de la cúpula de la Basílica de la Virgen de los Desamparados de Valencia, obra de Antonio Palomino realizada entre 1701 y 1704. Aproximación a un análisis del ámbito histórico-alegórico del conjunto. El aspecto histórico es figurado con unos milagros de la Virgen representados en unas cartelas que simulan relieves monocromos. Lo alegórico se significa con unas personificaciones sobre algunas de las invocaciones de la Letanía Lauretana: Salus, Refugium, Solatium y Auxilium; otras dos referidas a la Virgen de los Desamparados: Diligentia y Pietas; y como corolario el emblema del cuervo que alimenta a sus pollos con la propia sangre, bajo el lema Desertorum Protectio. Este artículo guarda continuidad con otro anterior titulado: “La Cúpula de la Basílica de la Virgen de los Desamparados de Valencia (I): El ámbito de la Gloria”, completándose así el estudio (AEA, núm 317).

En este artículo se realiza una exploración de cuatro escudos de Costa Rica, tres de ellos utilizados en 1824 y uno en 1840. Se estima que mediante los elementos simbólicos contenidos en los escudos, se puede visualizar la forma en que ideologías eurocéntricas permean y moldean los imaginarios, manteniendo vivos aspectos colonizantes que influyen en la visión de mundo de la ciudadanía. El estudio ofrece además, una perspectiva ampliada, no solo en su contexto socio histórico sino también en su dimensión simbólica, en la que destacan elementos de la francmasonería presentes en estas representaciones patrias. This article will explore the use of four coats of arms from Costa Rica, three from 1824 and one from 1840. Through the study of symbolic elements within the coats of arms, it is possible to visualize how Euro-centric ideology permeates and influences social imagination, thus keeping colonial elements present in the citizen's view of the world. This study will also include a broad perspective on social and historical context, as well as in its symbology, particularly in the masonic elements present on patriotic symbols.

A fama de Aby Warburg (1866-1929) sempre superou o conhecimento de sua obra. Mas, nas últimas duas décadas, alguns dos mais importantes pensadores da estética - como Georges Didi-Huberman e Giorgio Agamben - encontram neste obscuro historiador da arte alemão um precursor de suas próprias investigações. Partindo do debate sobre o legado de Warburg nas obras de Ernst Gombrich e Erwin Panofsky, este ensaio procura historiar a trajetória deste resgate e repertoriar os conceitos e procedimentos warburgianos que mais mobilizam os teóricos contemporâneos. Sugere-se, por fim, que é devido à crescente influência de Walter Benjamin e às inquietações suscitadas pelo estatuto da imagem na contemporaneidade que os estudos de Warburg voltam a servir de referência para historiadores e estudiosos da imagem. Aby Warburg's fame was always above the real knowledge of his work. But, in the last two decades, some of the most important philosophers of the aesthetics - such as Georges Didi-Huberman and Giorgio Agamben - have found out in this German art historian an obscure predecessor of their own inquiries. After discussing Warburg's legacy in art historians such as Ernst Gombrich and Erwin Panofsky, this essay describes the trajectory of that retrieval as well as illuminates some warburgian concepts and methodological procedures that fascinate contemporary thinkers. Finally, it suggests that is due to Walter Benjamin's crescent influence and thanks to the questions raised by the contemporary images that Warburg's work is back, playing an important role among historians and visual scholars.

Dissertação de Mestrado em Estudos do Património apresentada à Universidade Aberta Flávio Gonçalves (1929-1987) é uma personalidade multidisciplinar. Historiador da Arte, iconógrafo, iconólogo, investigador, professor, conferencista, constitui-se como objeto de estudo proposto para a dissertação final do mestrado em Estudos do Património. Homem de ciência, Flávio Gonçalves é apesar de tudo um autor pouco conhecido. Ainda assim, os seus estudos constituem uma referência no processo da leitura e de interpretação dos documentos figurativos, fundamentalmente a arte religiosa. Utilizou o método iconográfico, observando atentamente e descrevendo os elementos visuais bem como o método iconológico, para explicar o significado profundo da obra de arte. O objetivo deste trabalho intenta responder à pergunta o que nos revelam os estudos de Flávio Gonçalves sobre a arte religiosa em Portugal dos séculos XVI e XVII. A obra de Flávio Gonçalves é extensa, motivo por que circunscrevemos o conhecimento dos seus estudos às investigações iconográficas efetuadas na arte religiosa que revelaram influências e ruturas na historiografia nacional. Confrontamos com o que os historiadores da arte nos primeiros anos do século XX nos deixaram para nos situarmos nos processos historiográficos desse tempo e conhecer o que então se escreveu sobre a História da Arte. Flávio Gonçalves, não se limitou a ser um historiador centrado na inventariação exaustiva e cronológica das obras de arte e das épocas a que se reportam. Os seus estudos tanto se centraram nas obras de arte reconhecidas, como nos objetos plásticos de menor valor artístico. Fez-nos perceber que a obra de arte, sendo uma expressão cultural, oferece à nossa crítica mais do que nos revelam as suas cores e as suas formas. Flávio Gonçalves (1929-1987) is a multidisciplinary figure. As an art historian, iconographer, iconologist, researcher, teacher, lecturer, he was selected as the object of study for the final master's thesis in Estudos do Património. As a man of science, Flávio Gonçalves is, despite all, a little known author. Nevertheless, his studies are a reference in what the process of reading and interpretation of figurative documents, essentially in the religious art is concerned. He used the iconographic method, by attentively looking and describing the visual elements, as well as the iconological method in order to explain the work of art’s deep meaning. The purpose of this study is to try to answer the question what do Flávio Gonçalves studies reveal about Portuguese religious art in the XVI and XVII centuries. Flávio Gonçalves work is extensive and, for this reason, we circumscribed the knowledge of his studies to the iconographic investigations about religious art that had revealed influences and ruptures in national historiography. We compared with the work of other historians from the beginning of the XX century to locate ourselves in the historiographical processes of that time and to get to know what has been written about Art History. Flávio Gonçalves was not just an historian focused on extensive and chronological inventorying of the work of art from the period concerned. His studies focus not only in well-known work of art, but also in plastic objects with minor artistic value. He made us realize that the work of art, as a cultural expression, offers to our criticism more than its colours and shapes.

Argumentar-se-á que a narrativa do referido animê possui como seu conteúdo, a questão dos perigos do uso da tecnologia das armas atômicas, de forma que possamos compreender tal significado iconológico como um tipo de pesadelo japonês acerca do terror experimentado com os ataques atômicos em Hiroshima e Nagasaki respectivamente em 6 e 9 de agosto de 1945, representado culturalmente através do animê Akira, sendo capaz de ser percebido e recebido por um público universal não diretamente herdeiro das conseqüências das explosões de Hiroshima e Nagasaki.

Depuis un certain nombre d’années, un nouveau courant de recherche est apparu en histoire de l’art : l’anthropologie des images. L’image semble une notion plus juste historiquement et anthropologiquement que l’art, trop déterminé par l’histoire récente de la culture occidentale. Le but de ce texte est d’abord de confronter l’anthropologie des images à d’autres champs disciplinaires qui réfutent la question de l’art : visual studies, iconologie. Dans tous les cas, l’image est conçue comme représentation porteuse de signification. Mais sur la fabrication, la création, ces études sur les images ont peu à dire. On cherchera finalement à établir les bases d’une autre approche des objets visuels, fondée sur l’anthropologie des techniques et de la philosophie deleuzienne de l’événement, où c’est moins l’image comme représentation que comme expression qui est étudiée.Many years have past since art history has witnessed the emergence of a new field of research: the anthropology of images. The word “image” seems more historically and anthropologically appropriate than “art,” a term too closely defined by the more recent history of Western culture. The first goal of this paper is to compare the anthropology of images and other disciplinary fields that refute the question of “art” per se, namely visual studies and iconology. In all of these cases, the image is conceived of as representation bearing meaning, but these studies have not much to say about production or creation. Finally, we will try to establish the foundations of another approach to the study of visual objects, based on the methods of anthropology. In addition, we will consider Deleuze’s philosophy of event, in which the image is studied less as representation, and more as an as expression.Sono ormai trascorsi alcuni anni da quando la storia dell’arte ha assistito all’emergere di un nuovo campo di studi : l’antropologia delle immagini. Il termine “immagine” sembra più appropriato, sotto il profilo storico e antropologico, di quello d’“arte”, termine dettato e legato alla storia moderna della cultura occidentale. Il primo obiettivo di questo articolo è di comparare l’antropologia delle imagini con altre correnti disciplinari che rifiutano analogamente la definizione di “arte”, in particolare i visual studies e l’iconologia. In tutti questi casi, l’immagine è concepita come una rappresentazione dotata di senso, ma questo tipo di studi si mostrano poco attenti al lato della produzione e della creazione. Infine, tenteromo di stabilire i fondamenti di un altro tipo di avvicinarsi allo studio degli oggetti visivi, fondato sui metodi antropologici. In conclusione, ci si riferirà alla filosofia deleuziana dell’evento, che considera l’immagine non in termini di rappresentazione bensì in termini di espressione.

Vague in the outlines and abounding in figures of real or fabulous creatures, the iconography of medieval maps played a significant role in helping users to recognize lands that were virtually unknown to Christendom. In a world with no reliable latitudes and longitudes, the land contours, inhabitants and even certain elements of fauna and flora could become variables of utmost importance for geographic orientation. Notwithstanding the higher levels of precision achieved in their efforts to represent geographic space, the considerable advancements made in latitude determination, and their continuous pursuit of a practical method for the establishment of longitudes, the cartographers of the Age of Discoveries still went to the trouble of depicting notable elements - whether real or imaginary - to help travelers get their bearings around different regions of the globe. As the presence of Europeans continued to expand and an authentic scientific revolution took place in the 17th century, the lengthy notes and eye-catching representations of nature and local inhabitants soon lost their utility as points of reference on 17th-century maps to become mere accessories of aesthetic and commercial value. The advent of the 18th century consolidated, once and for all, the transformation of such illustrations into essentially decorative elements with no other relevant role to play in mapmaking. In addition to decreasing in number, the figures became more stylized and moved to the borders of the maps as ornamental motifs. Although they often maintained some sort of relation with the geographic space depicted on the map, the motifs chosen could also constitute a rather independent element. In fact, allegories, compositions with a variety of mythological figures, and historical representations were often used to underscore the power of certain political agents. Vagos em seu traçado e pródigos em figuras de seres reais ou fabulosos, a iconografia dos mapas medievais cumpria papel nada desprezível para o reconhecimento de terras virtualmente desconhecidas pela Cristandade. Em um mundo sem latitude e longitude confiáveis, os acidentes da paisagem, os povos existentes e até mesmo determinados componentes da fauna e flora poderiam transformar-se em variáveis de extrema importância para a orientação geográfica. Apesar de alcançarem maior precisão nas tentativas de representar o espaço geográfico, experimentarem considerável avanço na determinação da latitude e prosseguirem na busca de um método prático para obter a longitude, os cartógrafos da época dos Grandes Descobrimentos ainda se preocuparam em figurar elementos notáveis - imaginários ou não - capazes de auxiliar na orientação dos viajantes nas mais diferentes regiões do globo. Com a crescente expansão europeia e a autêntica revolução científica em curso no século XVII, os extensos comentários e as vistosas representações da natureza e dos habitantes dos locais perderiam rapidamente o papel de referência nos mapas seiscentistas, conservando apenas seu valor estético e econômico. A chegada do século XVIII consolidaria a definitiva transformação das ilustrações em um elemento essencialmente decorativo, sem qualquer outro papel relevante em termos cartográficos. Além de menos numerosas, as figuras amiúde tendem a uma certa estilização e acentuam seu deslocamento para a periferia dos mapas, que soem apresentar alguma ornamentação apenas nas cártulas ou cartuchos. Apesar de muitas vezes conservarem algum tipo de relação com o espaço geográfico considerado, os motivos escolhidos também podem adquirir relativa independência, havendo numerosos casos de alegorias e composições com variadas figuras mitológicas, bem como representações de caráter histórico destinadas a ressaltar o poderio de um determinado ator político.

Este trabajo pretende presentar un recorrido iconográfico e iconológico a través de la tipología monetaria de temática marítima acuñada en la Bética costera, desde los inicios de su amonedación en el siglo III a. C. hasta el final de la misma durante el Imperio. Para ello, se expondrán brevemente los orígenes y paralelos de estas imágenes con el objeto de explicar los significados económicos, ideológicos y sociales que esta iconografía entraña. This paper aims to present an iconographic and iconological walk through the maritime theme type of currency minted in the Coastal Baetica since the beginning of the third century b. C. until the end of its mintage during the Empire. To meet this target, shall state briefly the origins and parallels of these images in order to explain the economic, social and ideological meanings that this iconography entails.
