Silty lacustrine and paludal records spanning from the penultimate deglaciation (late Illinois Episode) to the present are preserved in kettles formed during marine isotope stage (MIS) 6 that lie adjacent to the MIS 2 Manito terrace along the valleys of the Sangamon and Illinois Rivers. Geochemical, mineralogical, particle-size, and chronological records from two basins, Smith Lake and Lake Ben, provide a unique opportunity to assess loess age and provenance of the southcentral Laurentide ice sheet. Here, I focused on deposits of redeposited loess of the last glaciation (Wisconsin Episode). Other than subtle laminations and fossils of emergent and aquatic plants and animals, the silty texture, chemical composition, and mineralogy of the lake sediment closely resemble Peoria Silt (loess). Sediment-core records sampled from Smith Lake and Lake Ben in Mason County, Illinois, confirm rapid deposition of proximal loess derived from the nearby outwash plain of the Illinois River from ca. 30.9–18.0 calibrated (cal) k.y. B.P. From 18.0–14.7 cal k.y. B.P., deposition of proximal loess was gradually replaced by far-traveled (distal) loess chiefly derived from Superior lobe provenance and global dust. The succession is capped by a cumulic gleysol that was truncated by recent plowing. Proximal loess deposits in lakes Smith and Ben are composed primarily of very fine sand, coarse silt, and medium silt (125– 16 µm) compared to the distal facies (fine silt and finer sediment: <16 µm). Proximal loess that originated from outwash of the Lake Michigan lobe contains abundant Ca, Zr, Sr, illite, and magnetic minerals. The distal facies contains relatively abundant Rb, Al, K, Si, Cu, and Pb, and it is enriched in smectite (relative to illite) and depleted in magnetic minerals. Radiocarbon ages on terrestrial gastropod aragonite in loess from the nearby New Cottonwood School and Thomas Quarry sites indicate that Peoria Silt deposition ended between 18 cal k.y. B.P. and 16 cal k.y. B.P. At these localities, the upper part of the record is complicated by the modern soil, which has altered soil organic matter and leached carbonate. At Lake Ben, the radiocarbon record of emergent aquatic vegetation indicates that sediment accumulation rates and the ratio of proximal to distal loess decreased at the correlative interval that yielded the youngest snail shell ages at Cottonwood School. The upward increase in element concentrations such as Al and decrease in coarse/fine silt ratios in the modern soil are prominent features in the Lake Ben record dating from 18–14 cal k.y. B.P. This correlation strongly suggests that many of the features of the modern soil were not developed into uniform parent material but, rather, were inherited from incremental addition of distal loess to proximal loess, collectively identified as Peoria Silt. The paucity of key elements (Cd, Hg, Se, Ag, Au) in this transition zone suggests limited contributions from western lobes (i.e., Des Moines and James lobes), but abundant Ti and Cu suggest a contribution from the Superior lobe. A new wrinkle in this interpretation is that the rise in elements such as Al, Rb, and Si suggests significant additions from generic dust from unknown sources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Twenty-four new optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and radiocarbon ages from sediment cores in nine lakes associated with the Shipshewana and Sturgis moraines in northern Indiana and southern Michigan estimate when recession of the Saginaw Lobe of the Laurentide Ice Sheet was underway in the southern Great Lakes region, USA. Average OSL ages of 23.4 ± 2.2 ka for the Shipshewana Moraine and 19.7 ± 2.2 ka for the Sturgis Moraine are considered minimum limiting deglacial ages for these recessional moraines. The much younger radiocarbon ages are consistent with other regional radiocarbon ages from lakes, and record climate amelioration around ~16.5 cal ka BP. Early recession of the interlobate Saginaw Lobe was well underway by 23.4 ± 2.2 ka, when the adjacent Lake Michigan and Huron-Erie lobes were a few hundred kilometers farther south and near their maximum southerly limits. The results provide the first time constraints when sediment from the Lake Michigan and Huron-Erie lobes began filling the accommodation space left by the Saginaw Lobe. During the last deglaciation temperatures over midcontinental North America warmed dramatically through the Bølling-Allerød, underwent a cool period associated with the Younger-Dryas and then reverted to warmer, near modern temperatures during the early Holocene. However, paleo proxy records of the hydroclimate of this period have presented divergent evidence. We reconstruct summer relative humidity (RH) across the last deglacial period using a mechanistic model of cellulose and leaf water δ 18 O and δD combined with a pollen-based temperature proxy to interpret stable isotopes of sub-fossil wood. Midcontinental RH was similar to modern conditions during the Last Glacial Maximum, progressively increased during the Bølling-Allerød, peaked during the Younger-Dryas, and declined sharply during the early Holocene. This RH record suggests deglacial summers were cooler and characterized by greater advection of moisture-laden air-masses from the Gulf of Mexico and subsequent entrainment over the mid-continent by a high-pressure system over the Laurentide ice sheet. These patterns help explain the formation of dark-colored cumulic horizons in many Great Plains paleosol sequences and the development of no-analog vegetation types common to the Midwest during the last deglacial period. • Integrated remote sensing and geochronology approaches have been applied. • OSL and radiocarbon dating indicate an earlier than expected retreat of the Saginaw Lobe. • Revisiting the timing of the LIS retreat is required. Understanding the behavior of paleo-ice sheets in response to past climate change and land surface processes can provide insights into the interplay between the atmosphere, ocean surface, and the cryosphere, which helps update current climate models and understand landscape evolution. The timing of the advancement and retreat of ice lobes along Quaternary ice sheet margins and their link to ocean surface temperature fluctuation are of particular interest. The Saginaw lobe along the southern margin of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) was bound by the Lake Michigan and Huron-Erie lobes. It flowed out of Saginaw Bay, across Lower Michigan, and into northern Indiana. All three of these lobes retreated across the region asynchronously, with the Saginaw lobe retreating first. The asynchronous behavior of the lobes allowed the Lake Michigan and Huron-Erie lobes to overprint and alter landscapes once occupied by Saginaw lobe ice. Lacustrine sediments within the Sturgis Moraine, deposited during the Saginaw lobe retreat in extreme southwestern Michigan, yielded optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages of 30.1 ± 1.8, 28.7 ± 1.5 and 25.2 ± 1.9 ka. An additional radiocarbon date (22.22 ± 0.8 cal ka) was measured from bryophytes sampled near the base of an ice-walled lake plain atop the moraine. These dates indicate that deglaciation of the Saginaw lobe could have been underway in southwestern Michigan between ∼ 30 and 22 ka, while ice margins of the Huron-Erie and Lake Michigan lobes were further south in Indiana and Illinois. The new dates indicate that southwestern Michigan may have witnessed ice-free conditions four thousand years earlier than previously thought. Moreover, the paleo-hydrological analyses of southwestern Michigan using detailed surficial geology mapping, Lidar-based longitudinal and terrace profiles along meltwater channels, and OSL data indicate that meltwater originating from the Saginaw—Huron-Erie interlobate area drained westward across the Saginaw lobe terrain between ∼ 18.0 to 14.6 Ka ago. The findings call for revisiting the current understanding of the timing and behavior of the southern margins of the LIS and the Holocene landscape evolution in Michigan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ice-walled lake plains (IWLPs) are rounded, flat-topped mounds that formed in stagnant ice environments along the margins of the Laurentide Ice Sheet. We conducted detailed morphometric and statistical analyses of the shape, size, and orientation of more than 400 IWLPs identified from aerial photos aided with LiDAR data in DeKalb County, Illinois, USA. Lake elongation theories include extraterrestrial impact (e.g. the Carolina Bays), ice flow dynamics and crevasses, and wind induced currents that preferentially erode the shorelines perpendicular to the dominant wind direction. The results indicate that elliptical IWLPs with a perimeter greater than 3050m have preferred orientations roughly normal to the paleo-wind direction as indicated by contemporaneous parabolic dunes located 50km to the west. The orientations of the IWLPs with a perimeter less than 1220m are scattered and show no apparent trend. The IWLP orientation is not related to ice flow dynamics or glacial crevasses because no statistically significant relationship exists with regard to the ice flow as proxied by the moraine direction. The orientation of large IWLPs in DeKalb County are consistent with wind-induced lake elongation observed in modern permafrost thaw lakes, suggesting that the prevailing wind also played an important role in controlling the orientation of IWLPs during the last glacial period and led to the preferred orientation we see today.
