Abstract: Ice cores drilled at Vostok Station, Antarctica, and studied over the past 10 years by Russia, France, and the United States (Figure 1) are providing a wealth of information about past climate and environmental changes over more than a full glacial-interglacial cycle. The ice cores show that East Antarctica was colder and drier during glacial periods than during the Holocene and that large-scale atmospheric circulation was more vigorous during glacial times. They also support evidence from deep-sea sediment studies favoring orbital forcing of Pleistocene climate, reveal direct correlations of carbon dioxide and methane concentrations with temperature, and indicate how the accumulation of trace compounds have changed through time.

Abstract: International audience; The Antarctic Vostok ice core provided compelling evidence of the nature of climate, and of climate feedbacks, over the past 420,000 years. Marine records suggest that the amplitude of climate variability was smaller before that time, but such records are often poorly resolved. Moreover, it is not possible to infer the abundance of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere from marine records. Here we report the recovery of a deep ice core from Dome C, Antarctica, that provides a climate record for the past 740,000 years. For the four most recent glacial cycles, the data agree well with the record from Vostok. The earlier period, between 740,000 and 430,000 years ago, was characterized by less pronounced warmth in interglacial periods in Antarctica, but a higher proportion of each cycle was spent in the warm mode. The transition from glacial to interglacial conditions about 430,000 years ago (Termination V) resembles the transition into the present interglacial period in terms of the magnitude of change in temperatures and greenhouse gases, but there are significant differences in the patterns of change. The interglacial stage following Termination V was exceptionally long--28,000 years compared to, for example, the 12,000 years recorded so far in the present interglacial period. Given the similarities between this earlier warm period and today, our results may imply that without human intervention, a climate similar to the present one would extend well into the future.

Abstract: We measured δ17O and δ18O in two Antarctic ice cores at EPICA Dome C (EDC) and TALDICE (TD), respectively, and computed 17O-excess with respect to VSMOW. The comparison of our 17O-excess data with the previous record obtained at Vostok (Landais et al., 2008a) revealed differences up to 35 ppm in 17O-excess mean level and evolution for the three sites. Our data show that the large increase depicted at Vostok (20 ppm) during the last deglaciation is a regional and not a general pattern in the temporal distribution of 17O-excess in East Antarctica. The EDC data display an increase of 12 ppm, whereas the TD data show no significant variation from the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) to the Early Holocene (EH). A Lagrangian moisture source diagnostic revealed very different source regions for Vostok and EDC compared to TD. These findings combined with the results of a sensitivity analysis, using a Rayleigh-type isotopic model, suggest that normalized relative humidity (RHn) at the oceanic source region (OSR) is a determining factor for the spatial differences of 17O-excess in East Antarctica. However, 17O-excess in remote sites of continental Antarctica (e.g. Vostok) may be highly sensitive to local effects. Hence, we consider 17O-excess in coastal East Antarctic ice cores (TD) to be more reliable as a proxy for RHn at the OSR.

Abstract: International audience; Correct estimation of the firn lock-in depth is essential for correctly linking gas and ice chronologies in ice core studies. Here, two approaches to constrain the firn depth evolution in Antarctica are presented over the last deglaciation : outputs of a firn densification model, and measurements of 15N of N2 in air trapped in ice core, assuming that 15N is only affected by gravitational fractionation in the firn column. Since the firn densification process is largely governed by surface temperature and accumulation rate, we have investigated four ice cores drilled in coastal (Berkner Island, BI, and James Ross Island, JRI) and semi-coastal (TALDICE and EPICA Dronning Maud Land, EDML) Antarctic regions. Combined with available ice core air- 15N measurements from the EPICA Dome C (EDC) site, the studied regions encompass a large range of surface accumulation rates and temperature conditions. Our 15N profiles reveal a heterogeneous response of the firn structure to glacial-interglacial climatic changes. While firn densification simulations correctly predict TALDICE 15N variations, they systematically fail to capture the large millennial-scale 15N variations measured at BI and the 15N glacial levels measured at JRI and EDML - a mismatch previously reported for central East Antarctic ice cores. New constraints of the EDML gas-ice depth offset during the Laschamp event ( 41 ka) and the last deglaciation do not favour the hypothesis of a large convective zone within the firn as the explanation of the glacial firn model- 15N data mismatch for this site. While we could not conduct an indepth study of the influence of impurities in snow for firnification from the existing datasets, our detailed comparison between the 15N profiles and firn model simulations under different temperature and accumulation rate scenarios suggests that the role of accumulation rate may have been underestimated in the current description of firnification models.

Abstract: During 1996 PNRA – ITASE traverse two firn cores were retrieved from the Talos Dome area (East Antarctica) at elevations of 2316 m (TD, 89 m long) and 2246 m (ST556, 19 m long). Cores were dated by using seasonal variations in nss SO42- concentrations coupled with the recognition of tritium marker level (1965-66) and nss SO42- spikes due to the most important volcanic events in the past (Pinatubo 1991, Agung 1963, Krakatoa 1883, Tambora 1815, Kuwae 1452, Unknown 1259). The number of annual layers recognised in the TD and ST556 cores were 779 and 97 respectively. The δD record obtained from the TD core has been compared with others East Antarctic isotope ice core records (Dome C EPICA, South Pole, Taylor Dome). These records suggests cooler climate conditions between the middle of 16th and the beginning of 19th centuries, which might be related to the Little Ice Age (LIA) cold period. Due to the high degree of geographical variability, the strongest LIA cooling was not temporally synchronous over East Antarctica and the analysed records do not provide a coherent picture for East Antarctica. The accumulation rate record presented for the TD core shows a decrease during part of the LIA followed by an increment of about 11% in accumulation during the 20th century. At the ST556 site, the accumulation rate observed during the 20th century was quite stable.

Abstract: International audience; The disturbed stratigraphy of the ice in the lowest 10% of the Greenland GRIP ice core has been previously demonstrated using gas measurements (d 18 O of O 2 and CH 4) on a few meters depth scale. However, rapid ice isotopic variations (on the scale of 20 cm) are experienced in the bottom of the GRIP ice core with complex chemical signatures that make them difficult to reconcile with a disturbed stratigraphy of the ice. This is the case for event 5e1, first described as a dramatic cooling 120 kyr BP. We analyzed at a 5 cm resolution the isotopic composition of the air from 2 m of the GRIP bottom ice core covering event 5e1. The d 15 N measurements, combined with a basic firn modeling, lead to the solid conclusion that the rapid event 5e1 is not a climatic event. Rapid variations of d 18 O of O 2 (d 18 O atm) are in agreement with a disturbed ice stratigraphy. However, the double peak shape of the d 18 O atm , recalling chemical data at the same depth, requires processes of diffusion after the mixing or even postcoring, placing limits to the interpretation of some classical paleoclimatic proxies in small scale mixed ice (

Abstract: Measurements of the two water stable isotopes (δD and δ[sup 18]O) along EPICA (European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica) Dome C ice core are combined with simple isotopic modelling (distillation models) to reconstruct the variability of both the site temperature (East Antarctica) and the moisture source temperature (nowadays probably the subantarctic Indian Ocean). We discuss the difference between the reconstructed site and source temperature profiles with respect to the initial isotopic data. We show that (i) the early-Holocene optimum appears first in Antarctica and 800 years later in the Southern Ocean, and (ii) during the last 5000 years, the site and source temperatures co-vary at the centennial timescale. An 833-year periodicity is observed only on deuterium and site temperature and therefore probably of local origin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: A classical method for understanding the coupling between northern and southern hemispheres during millennial-scale climate events is based on the correlation between Greenland and Antarctic ice core records of atmospheric composition. Here we present a new approach based on the use of a single Antarctic ice core in which measurements of methane concentration and inert gas isotopes place constraints on the timing of a rapid climate change in the North and of its Antarctic counterpart. We applied it to the Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5d/c transition early in the last glaciation ∼108 ky BP. Our results indicate that the Antarctic temperature increase occurred 2 ky before the methane increase, which is used as a time marker of the warming in the Northern Hemisphere. This result is in agreement with the “bipolar seesaw” mechanism used to explain the phase relationships documented between 23 and 90 ky BP [Blunier and Brook, 2001].

Abstract: Air trapped in ice core bubbles provides our primary source of information about past atmospheres. Air isotopic composition (15N/14N and 40Ar/36Ar) permits an estimate of the temperature shifts associated with abrupt climate changes because of isotope fractionation occurring in response to temperature gradients in the snow layer on top of polar ice sheets. A rapid surface temperature change modifies temporarily the firn temperature gradient, which causes a detectable anomaly in the isotopic composition of nitrogen and argon. The location of this anomaly in depth characterizes the gas age - ice age difference (Δage) during an abrupt event by correlation with the δD (or δ18O) anomaly in the ice. We focus this study on the marine isotope stage 5d/5c transition (108 kyr B.P.), a climate warming which was one of the most abrupt events in the Vostok (Antarctica) ice isotopic record [Petit et al., 1999]. A step-like decrease in δ15N and δ40Ar/4 from 0.49 to 0.47‰ (possibly a gravitational signal due to a change in firn thickness) is preceded by a small but detectable δ15N peak (possibly a thermal diffusion signal). We obtain an estimate of 5350 ± 300 yr for Δage, close to the model estimate of 5000 years obtained using the Vostok glaciological timescale. Our results also suggest that the use of the present-day spatial isotope-temperature relationship slightly underestimates (but by no more than 20 ± 15%) the Vostok temperature change from present day at that time, which is in contrast to the temperature estimate based on borehole temperature measurements in Vostok which suggests that Antarctic temperature changes are underestimated by up to 50% [Salamatin et al., 1998]. Abstract: Ice-core records of climate from Greenland and Antarctica show asynchronous temperature variations on millennial timescales during the last glacial period 1 . The warming during the transition from glacial to interglacial conditions was markedly different between the hemispheres, a pattern attributed to the thermal bipolar see-saw 2 . However, a record from the Ross Sea sector of East Antarctica has been suggested to be synchronous with Northern Hemisphere climate change 3 . Here we present a temperature record from the Talos Dome ice core, also located in the Ross Sea sector. We compare our record with ice-core analyses from Greenland, based on methane synchronization 4 , and find clearly asynchronous temperature changes during the deglaciation. We also find distinct differences in Antarctic records, pointing to differences in the climate evolution of the Indo-Pacific and Atlantic sectors of Antarctica. In the Atlantic sector, we find that the rate of warming slowed between 16,000 and 14,500 years ago, parallel with the deceleration of the rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations and with a slight cooling over Greenland. In addition, our chronology supports the hypothesis that the cooling of the Antarctic Cold Reversal is synchronous with the Bolling‐Allerod warming in the northern hemisphere 14,700 years ago 5 . The period from about 8 to 25kyr before present (bp) includes the climate transition from the last glacial to the Holocene. As documented from polar ice cores and other climate archives, the pattern of climate changes throughout this transition is different between Antarctica and the surrounding Southern Ocean and the Northern Hemisphere. The steady Antarctic deglacial warming reaches a first maximum (Antarctic Isotopic Maximum AIM1; ref.1)followedbyaninterruptiontowardscoolerconditionsduring the Antarctic Cold Reversal (ACR). Abstract: International audience; Precise knowledge of the phase relationship between climate changes in the two hemispheres is a key for understanding the Earth's climate dynamics. For the last glacial period, ice core studies1, 2 have revealed strong coupling of the largest millennial-scale warm events in Antarctica with the longest Dansgaard–Oeschger events in Greenland3, 4, 5 through the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation6, 7, 8. It has been unclear, however, whether the shorter Dansgaard–Oeschger events have counterparts in the shorter and less prominent Antarctic temperature variations, and whether these events are linked by the same mechanism. Here we present a glacial climate record derived from an ice core from Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica, which represents South Atlantic climate at a resolution comparable with the Greenland ice core records. After methane synchronization with an ice core from North Greenland9, the oxygen isotope record from the Dronning Maud Land ice core shows a one-to-one coupling between all Antarctic warm events and Greenland Dansgaard–Oeschger events by the bipolar seesaw6. The amplitude of the Antarctic warm events is found to be linearly dependent on the duration of the concurrent stadial in the North, suggesting that they all result from a similar reduction in the meridional overturning circulation.

24. Millenial scale variations of the isotopic composition of atmospheric oxygen over Marine Isotopic Stage 4

Abstract: Abstract: During rapid events of the last glacial period (DO events), dramatic changes are recorded at high and low latitudes. Without a precise common timescale, links between changes in Greenland temperature and changes in biosphere productivity, hydrology regimes and sea level are difficult to establish. The composition of atmospheric oxygen (δ 18Oatm) is influenced by global sea level changes, the global hydrologic cycle and the biosphere productivity. Since δ 18Oatm is measured in ice cores it gives the opportunity to investigate the underlying processes with no timescale uncertainty. Here, we present the first high resolution (50 yrs) record of the isotopic composition of atmospheric oxygen (δ 18Oatm) measured in the air trapped in a Greenland ice core (NorthGRIP). Our record covers a sequence of DO events (18-19-20) corresponding to the Marine Isotopic Stage 4, ∼75 to 60 ka ago. Our measurements reveal rapid changes of δ 18Oatm associated with the DO events. With a few additional measurements of the third isotope of oxygen (17O) during the DO event 19, we exclude the hypothesis that sea level changes are responsible for the isotopic variations. They originate more likely from large changes in relative humidity and latitudinal repartition of the continental vegetation over the DO events. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

25. Quantification of rapid temperature change during DO event 12 and phasing with methane inferred from air isotopic measurements

Abstract: The description of rapid climatic changes during the last glacial period at high northern latitudes has been largely documented through Greenland ice cores that are unique climatic and environmental records. However, Greenland ice isotopic records are biased temperature proxies and it is still a matter of debate whether changes in the high latitudes lead or lag rapid changes elsewhere. We focus here on the study of the mid-glacial Dansgaard Oeschger event 12 (45 ky BP) associated to a large δ18Oice change in the GRIP (GReenland Ice core Project) ice core. We use combined measurements of CH4, δ15N and δ40Ar in entrapped air associated with a recently developed firn densification and heat diffusion model to infer (i) the phasing between methane and temperature increases and (ii) the amplitude of the temperature change. Our method enables us to overcome the difficulty linked with rapid accumulation change in quantifying the temperature change. We obtain a 12±2.5 °C temperature increase at the beginning of DO event 12 thus confirming that the conventional use of water isotopes in the Greenland ice cores largely underestimates the actual amplitude of rapid temperature change in central Greenland. In agreement with previous studies, methane and temperature increase are in phase at the sampling resolution of that part of our profile (90 years). [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: International audience; In central Antarctica, where accumulation rates are very low, summer sublimation of surface snow is a key element of the surface mass balance, but its fingerprint in isotopic composition of water (δD, δ 18 O, and δ 17 O) remains unclear. In this study, we examined the influence of summer sublimation on δD, δ 18 O, and δ 17 O in precipitation using data sets of isotopic composition of precipitation at various sites on the inland East Antarctica. We found unexpectedly low δ 18 O values in the summer precipitation, decoupled from surface air temperatures. This feature can be explained by the combined effects of weak or nonexistent temperature inversion and moisture recycling associated with sublimation-condensation processes in summer. Isotopic fractionation during the moisture-recycling process also explains the observed high values of d-excess and 17 O-excess in summer precipitation. Our results suggest that the local cycle of sublimation-condensation in summer is an important process for the isotopic composition of surface snow, water vapor, and consequently precipitation on inland East Antarctica.

Abstract: Since its discovery in Greenland ice cores, the millennial scale climatic variability of the last glacial period has been increasingly documented at all latitudes with studies focusing mainly on Marine Isotopic Stage 3 (MIS 3; 28–60 thousand of years before present, hereafter ka) and characterized by short Dansgaard-Oeschger (DO) events. Recent and new results obtained on the EPICA and NorthGRIP ice cores now precisely describe the rapid variations of Antarctic and Greenland temperature during MIS 5 (73.5–123 ka), a time period corresponding to relatively high sea level. The results display a succession of long DO events enabling us to highlight a sub-millennial scale climatic variability depicted by i) short-lived and abrupt warming events preceding some Greenland InterStadial (GIS) (precursor-type events) and ii) abrupt warming events at the end of some GIS (rebound-type events). The occurrence of these secondary events is suggested to be driven by the Northern Hemisphere summertime insolation at 65° N together with the internal forcing of ice sheets. Thanks to a recent NorthGRIP-EPICA Dronning Maud Land (EDML) common timescale over MIS 5, the bipolar sequence of climatic events can be established at millennial to sub-millennial timescale. This provides evidence that a linear relationship is not satisfactory in explaining the link between Antarctic warming amplitudes and the duration of their concurrent Greenland Stadial (GS) for the entire glacial period. The conceptual model for a thermal bipolar seesaw permits a reconstruction of the Antarctic response to the northern millennial and sub-millennial scale variability over MIS 5. However, we show that when ice sheets are extensive, Antarctica does not necessarily warm during the whole GS as the thermal bipolar seesaw model would predict.

Abstract: An important share of paleoclimatic information is buried within the lowermost layers of deep ice cores. Because improving our records further back in time is one of the main challenges in the near future, it is essential to judge how deep these records remain unaltered, since the proximity of the bedrock is likely to interfere both with the recorded temporal sequence and the ice properties. In this paper, we present a multiparametric study (δD-δ18Oice, δ18Oatm, total air content, CO2, CH4, N2O, dust, high-resolution chemistry, ice texture) of the bottom 60 m of the EPICA (European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica) Dome C ice core from central Antarctica. These bottom layers were subdivided into two distinct facies: the lower 12 m showing visible solid inclusions (basal dispersed ice facies) and the upper 48 m, which we will refer to as the "basal clean ice facies". Some of the data are consistent with a pristine paleoclimatic signal, others show clear anomalies. It is demonstrated that neither large-scale bottom refreezing of subglacial water, nor mixing (be it internal or with a local basal end term from a previous/initial ice sheet configuration) can explain the observed bottom-ice properties. We focus on the high-resolution chemical profiles and on the available remote sensing data on the subglacial topography of the site to propose a mechanism by which relative stretching of the bottom-ice sheet layers is made possible, due to the progressively confining effect of subglacial valley sides. This stress field change, combined with bottom-ice temperature close to the pressure melting point, induces accelerated migration recrystallization, which results in spatial chemical sorting of the impurities, depending on their state (dissolved vs. solid) and if they are involved or not in salt formation. This chemical sorting effect is responsible for the progressive build-up of the visible solid aggregates that therefore mainly originate "from within", and not from incorporation processes of debris from the ice sheet's substrate. We further discuss how the proposed mechanism is compatible with the other ice properties described. We conclude that the paleoclimatic signal is only marginally affected in terms of global ice properties at the bottom of EPICA Dome C, but that the timescale was considerably distorted by mechanical stretching of MIS20 due to the increasing influence of the subglacial topography, a process that might have started well above the bottom ice. A clear paleoclimatic signal can therefore not be inferred from the deeper part of the EPICA Dome C ice core. Abstract: International audience; Ice cores provide unique archives of past climate and environmental changes based only on physical processes. Quantitative temperature reconstructions are essential for the comparison between ice core records and climate models. We give an overview of the methods that have been developed to reconstruct past local temperatures from deep ice cores and highlight several points that are relevant for future climate change. We first analyse the long term fluctuations of temperature as depicted in the long Antarctic record from EPICA Dome C. The long term imprint of obliquity changes in the EPICA Dome C record is highlighted and compared to simulations conducted with the ECBILT-CLIO intermediate complexity climate model. We discuss the comparison between the current interglacial period and the long interglacial corresponding to marine isotopic stage 11, ~400 kyr BP. Previous studies had focused on the role of precession and the thresholds required to induce glacial inceptions. We suggest that, due to the low eccentricity configuration of MIS 11 and the Holocene, the effect of precession on the incoming solar radiation is damped and that changes in obliquity must be taken into account. The EPICA Dome C alignment of terminations I and VI published in 2004 corresponds to a phasing of the obliquity signals. A conjunction of low obliquity and minimum northern hemisphere summer insolation is not found in the next tens of thousand years, supporting the idea of an unusually long interglacial ahead. As a second point relevant for future climate change, we discuss the magnitude and rate of change of past temperatures reconstructed from Greenland (NorthGRIP) and Antarctic (Dome C) ice cores. Past episodes of temperatures above the present-day values by up to 5°C are recorded at both locations during the penultimate interglacial period. The rate of polar warming simulated by coupled climate models forced by a CO2 increase of 1% per year is compared to ice-core-based temperature reconstructions. In Antarctica, the CO2-induced warming lies clearly beyond the natural rhythm of temperature fluctuations. In Greenland, the CO2-induced warming is as fast or faster than the most rapid temperature shifts of the last ice age. The magnitude of polar temperature change in response to a quadrupling of atmospheric CO2 is comparable to the magnitude of the polar temperature change from the Last Glacial Maximum to present-day. When forced by prescribed changes in ice sheet reconstructions and CO2 changes, climate models systematically underestimate the glacial-interglacial polar temperature change.

Abstract: Measurements of the two water stable isotopes (dD and d18O) along EPICA (European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica) Dome C ice core are combined with simple isotopic modelling (distillation models) to reconstruct the variability of both the site temperature (East Antarctica) and the moisture source temperature (nowadays probably the subantarctic Indian Ocean). We discuss the difference between the reconstructed site and source temperature pro” les with respect to the initial isotopic data. We show that (i) the early-Holocene optimum appears” rst in Antarctica and 800 years later in the Southern Ocean, and (ii) during the last 5000 years, the site and source temperatures co-vary at the centennial timescale. An 833-year periodicity is observed only on deuterium and site temperature and therefore probably of local origin.

Abstract: A single isotope ratio (δD or δ18O) of water is widely used as an air-temperature proxy in Antarctic ice core records. These isotope ratios, however, do not solely depend on air-temperature but also on the extent of distillation of heavy isotopes out of atmospheric water vapor from an oceanic moisture source to a precipitation site. The temperature changes at the oceanic moisture source (Δ Tsource) and at the precipitation site (Δ Tsite) can be retrieved by using deuterium-excess (d) data. A new d record from Dome Fuji, Antarctica spanning the past 360 000 yr is presented and compared with records from Vostok and EPICA Dome C ice cores. In previous studies, to retrieve Δ Tsource and Δ Tsite information, different linear regression equations were proposed using theoretical isotope distillation models. A major source of uncertainty lies in the coefficient of regression, βsite which is related to the sensitivity of d to Δ Tsite. We show that different ranges of temperature and selections of isotopic model outputs may increase the value of βsite by more than a factor of two. To explore the impacts of this coefficient on reconstructed temperatures, we apply for the first time the exact same methodology to the isotope records from the three Antarctica ice cores. We show that uncertainties in the βsite coefficient strongly affect (i) the glacial–interglacial magnitude of Δ Tsource; (ii) the imprint of obliquity in Δ Tsource and in the site-source temperature gradient. By contrast, we highlight the robustness of Δ Tsite reconstruction using water isotopes records.

Abstract: We compare the present and last interglacial periods as recorded in Antarctic water stable isotope records now available at various temporal resolutions from six East Antarctic ice cores: Vostok, Taylor Dome, EPICA Dome C (EDC), EPICA Dronning Maud Land (EDML), Dome Fuji and the recent TALDICE ice core from Talos Dome. We first review the different modern site characteristics in terms of ice flow, meteorological conditions, precipitation intermittency and moisture origin, as depicted by meteorological data, atmospheric reanalyses and Lagrangian moisture source diagnostics. These different factors can indeed alter the relationships between temperature and water stable isotopes. Using five records with sufficient resolution on the EDC3 age scale, common features are quantified through principal component analyses. Consistent with instrumental records and atmospheric model results, the ice core data depict rather coherent and homogenous patterns in East Antarctica during the last two interglacials. Across the East Antarctic plateau, regional differences, with respect to the common East Antarctic signal, appear to have similar patterns during the current and last interglacials. We identify two abrupt shifts in isotopic records during glacial inception at TALDICE and EDML, likely caused by regional sea ice expansion. These regional differences are discussed in terms of moisture origin and in terms of past changes in local elevation histories which are compared to ice sheet model results. Our results suggest that, for coastal sites, elevation changes may contribute significantly to inter-site differences. These elevation changes may be underestimated by current ice sheet models.

Abstract: We expand here the description of the Antarctic temperature variability during the long interglacial period occurring ~400 thousand years before the present (Marine Isotopic Stage, MIS 11). Our study is based on new detailed deuterium measurements conducted on the EPICA Dome C ice core, Antarctica, with a ~50 year temporal resolution. Despite an ice diffusion of a length reaching ~8 cm at MIS 11 depth, the data allow us to highlight a variability at multi-centennial scale for MIS 11, as it has already been observed for the Holocene period (MIS 1). The differences between MIS 1 and MIS 11 are analysed regarding the links between multi-millennial trends and sub-millennial variability. The EPICA Dome C deuterium record shows an increased variability and the onset of millennial to sub-millennial periodicities at the beginning of the final cooling phase of MIS 11. Our findings are robust with respect to sensitivity tests on the somewhat uncertain MIS 11 duration.

Abstract: The deuterium excess of polar ice cores documents past changes in evaporation conditions and moisture origin. New data obtained from the European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica Dome C East Antarctic ice core provide new insights on the sequence of events involved in Termination II, the transition between the penultimate glacial and interglacial periods. This termination is marked by a north–south seesaw behavior, with first a slow methane concentration rise associated with a strong Antarctic temperature warming and a slow deuterium excess rise. This first step is followed by an abrupt north Atlantic warming, an abrupt resumption of the East Asian summer monsoon, a sharp methane rise, and a CO 2 overshoot, which coincide within dating uncertainties with the end of Antarctic optimum. Here, we show that this second phase is marked by a very sharp Dome C centennial deuterium excess rise, revealing abrupt reorganization of atmospheric circulation in the southern Indian Ocean sector.

Abstract: International audience; Marine Isotope Stage 19 (MIS 19) is the oldest interglacial period archived in the EPICA Dome C ice core (~ 780 ky BP) and the closest "orbital analogue" to the Holocene -- albeit with a different obliquity amplitude and phase with precession. New detailed deuterium measurements have been conducted with a depth resolution of 11 cm (corresponding time resolution of ~ 130 years). They confirm our earlier low resolution profile (55 cm), showing a relatively smooth shape over the MIS 20 to MIS 18 time period with a lack of sub-millennial climate variability, first thought to be due to this low resolution. The MIS 19 high resolution profile actually reveals a strong isotopic diffusion process leading to a diffusion length of at least ~ 40 cm erasing sub-millennial climate variability. We suggest that this diffusion is caused by water-veins associated with large ice crystals at temperatures above ‑10 °C, temperature conditions in which the MIS 19 ice has spent more than 200 ky. This result has implications for the selection of the future "oldest ice" drilling site.

Abstract: New high-resolution deuterium excess (d) data from the two EPICA ice cores drilled in Dronning Maud Land (EDML) and Dome C (EDC) are presented here. The main moisture sources for precipitation at EDC and EDML are located in the Indian Ocean and Atlantic Ocean, respectively. The more southward moisture origin for EDML is reflected in a lower present-day d value, compared to EDC. The EDML and EDC isotopic records (δ18O and d) show the main climate features common to the East Antarctic plateau and similar millennial scale climate variability during the last glacial period. However, quite large δ18O and d differences are observed during MIS5.5 and the glacial inception with a long-term behaviour. A possibility for this long-term difference could be related to uncertainties in past accumulation rate which are used in the glaciological models. Regional climate anomalies between the two sites during MIS5.5 could also be consistent with the observed EDML-EDC δ18O and d gradient anomalies. Simulations performed with the General Circulation Model ECHAM4 for different time slices provide a temporal temperature/isotope slope for the EDML region in fair agreement to the modern spatial slope. Tsite and Tsource records are extracted from both ice cores, using a modelling approach, after corrections for past δ18O seawater and elevation changes. A limited impact of d on Antarctic temperature reconstruction at both EDML and EDC has been found with a higher impact only at glacial inception. The AIM (Antarctic Isotope Maximum) events in both ice cores are visible also after the source correction, suggesting that these are real climate features of the glacial period. The different shape of the AIM events between EDC and EDML, as well as some climate features in the early Holocene, points to a slightly different climate evolution at regional scale. A comparison of our temperature reconstruction profiles with the aerosol fluxes show a strong coupling of the nssCa fluxes with Antarctic temperatures during glacial period and a tighter coupling of δ18O and Tsite with ssNa flux at EDML compared to EDC during the glacial period and MIS5.5.

Abstract: A high-resolution deuterium profile is now available along the entire European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica Dome C ice core, extending this climate record back to marine isotope stage 20.2, ~800,000 years ago. Experiments performed with an atmospheric general circulation model including water isotopes support its temperature interpretation. We assessed the general correspondence between Dansgaard-Oeschger events and their smoothed Antarctic counterparts for this Dome C record, which reveals the presence of such features with similar amplitudes during previous glacial periods. We suggest that the interplay between obliquity and precession accounts for the variable intensity of interglacial periods in ice core records. Abstract: International audience; Two Holocene ice core records from East Antarctica (Vostok and EPICA-Dome C) were analysed for dust concentration and size distribution at a temporal resolution of 1 sample per ~50 years. A series of volcanic markers randomly distributed over the common part of the ice cores (from 9.8 to 3.5 kyear BP) ensures accurate relative dating (±33 years). Dust-size records from the two sites display oscillations structured in cycles with sub-millennial and secular scale frequencies that are apparently asynchronous. The power spectra of the composite sum (Σ) of the two dust-size records display spectral energy mostly for 150- to 500-year periodicities. On the other hand, the 200-year band is common to both records and the 200 year components of the two sites are out-of-phase (100-year lead or lag) over ~5.5 kyear, a phenomenon also reflected by a significant (>99% conf. lev.) band in the power spectra of the composite difference (Δ) of the two size records. During long-range transport, mineral dust originating from the Southern Hemisphere continents is graded to a variable extent depending on the altitude and duration of atmospheric transport. Relatively coarse dust is associated with air mass penetration from the middle-lower troposphere and conversely relatively fine dust with upper troposphere air masses or the influence of subsidence over the Antarctic plateau, a hypothesis already proposed for the changes that occurred during the Last Glacial Maximum to Holocene transition (Delmonte et al. 2004b). Moreover, we assume that the overall fluctuation of air mass advection over Antarctica depends on the meridional pressure gradient with respect to low latitudes, i.e. the Antarctic Oscillation (AAO). We therefore suggest a regional variability in atmospheric circulation over East Antarctica. The 150-500 year power spectrum of the composite (Σ) parameter represents the long term variability of the AAO, imprinted by secular internal oscillations probably related to the southern ocean-climatic system. On the other hand, the Δ dust composite parameter suggests a persistent atmospheric dipole over East Antarctica delivering coarser (finer) dust particles alternatively to Vostok and Dome C regions with a bi-centennial periodicity. Indeed, a seesaw phenomenon in dust size distribution was already observed at three East Antarctic sites during the last deglaciation (Delmonte et al. 2004b) and was interpreted as a progressive reduction of the eccentricity of the polar vortex with respect to the geographic south pole. Interestingly, the Δ parameter shows a pronounced 200-year oscillation mode, throwing new light on the unresolved question of a possible relationship between climate and solar activity.

Abstract: Typical rapid climate events punctuating the last glacial period in Greenland, Europe and Antarctica are compared to two rapid events occurring under warmer conditions: ( i ) Dansgaard–Oeschger event 25, the first abrupt warming occurring during last glacial inception; ( ii ) 8.2 ka BP event, the only rapid cooling recorded during the Holocene in Greenland ice cores and in Ammersee, Germany. The rate of warming during previous warmer interglacial periods is estimated from polar ice cores to 1.5 °C per millennium, without abrupt changes. Abstract: The timing and synchronisation of Greenland and Antarctic climate events that occurred during the last glacial period are still under debate, as is the magnitude of temperature change associated with these events. Here we present detailed records of local and moisture-source temperature changes spanning the period 27-45 kyr BP from water stable isotope measurements (deltaD and delta(18)O) in the recently drilled EPICA Dome C ice core, East Antarctic plateau. Using a simple isotopic model, site (DeltaT(site)) and source (DeltaT(source)) temperatures are extracted from the initial 50-yr high-resolution isotopic records, taking into account the changes in seawater isotopic composition. The deuterium isotope variability is very similar to the less precise deltaD record from the Vostok ice core, and the site temperature inversion leads to a temperature profile similar to the classical palaeothermometry method, due to compensations between source and ocean water corrections. The reconstructed DeltaT(site) and DeltaT(source) profiles show different trends during the glacial: the former shows a decreasing trend from the warm Al event (38 kyr BP) toward the Last Glacial Maximum, while the latter shows increasing values from 41 to 28 kyr BP. The low-frequency deuterium excess fluctuations are strongly influenced by obliquity fluctuations, controlling the low- to high-latitude temperature gradients, and show a remarkable similarity with a high-resolution southeast Atlantic sea surface temperature record. A comparison of the temperature profiles (site and source) and temperature gradient (DeltaT(source)-DeltaT(site)) with the non-sea-salt calcium and sodium records suggests a secondary influence of atmospheric transport changes on aerosol variations.

Abstract: International audience; The ice core recently drilled at the Dome Concordia site on the East Antarctic plateau provides a new high resolution isotope record covering part of the last glacial, the last transition and the Holocene. The two step shape of the deglaciation is remarkably similar for all the ice cores now available on the East Antarctic plateau. The first warming trend ends about 14000 years ago and is followed by the well marked Antarctic Cold Reversal (ACR) with a secondary peak common to all records. During the deglaciation, there are more similarities between the near coastal site of Taylor Dome and inland East Antarctica than between Taylor Dome and central Greenland. However, the results for EPICA do appear to confirm the Taylor Dome timescale after about 14 ka, showing cooling into the ACR roughly in phase between Greenland and Antarctica. While the overall deglacial pattem is asynchronous, this suggests that the now classical picture of a temperature seesaw between Antarctica and Greenland may be too simplistic. 1. Introduction Whereas numerous deep-sea, continental and ice core records covering the last deglaciation are now available [e.g. Alley and Clark, 1999], the driving mechanisms of this climatic transition are still not fully understood. Recent studies highlight the central role of the huge unstable Northern Hemisphere ice caps and their interaction with the oceanic thermohaline circulation in the North Atlantic. They also reveal that the Antarctic deglacial warming started before the sharp Greenland warming marking the onset of the B611ing and was interrupted by the so-called Antarctic Cold Reversal [hereafter ACR; Jouzel et al., 1995].
