Lake ice thickness (LIT) is one of the key climate variables in the lake ice domain, but there are currently large uncertainties in the retrieval of LIT. We present and validate a new LIT retrieval method that utilizes ICESat-2 data to assist CryoSat-2 echo peak selection, aiming to improve the accuracy of LIT retrieval and enable data acquisition without on-site measurements. The method involves screening out similar ICESat-2 and CryoSat-2 tracks based on time and space constraints. It also involves dynamically adjusting the range constraint window of CryoSat-2 waveforms based on the high-precision lake ice surface ellipsoid height obtained from ICESat-2/ATL06 data. Within this range constraint window, the peak selection strategy is used to determine the scattering interfaces between snow-ice and ice-water. By utilizing the distance between the scattering horizons, the thickness of the lake ice can be determined. We performed the ice thickness retrieval experiment for Baker Lake in winter and verified it against the on-site measurement data. The results showed that the accuracy was about 0.143 m. At the same time, we performed the ice thickness retrieval experiment for Great Bear Lake (GBL), which does not have on-site measurement data, and compared it with the climate change trend of GBL. Analytic methods are useful for lake ice climatology investigations that account for ice phenology, thickness, and extent. Ice climatology depends on the local climate and lake characteristics, which can be compressed into a few forcing factors for analytic modelling. The internal factors are lake depth, size, and water quality, while the external factors are solar radiation, air–lake interaction, and heat flux from bottom sediment. A two-layer temperature structure with a sharp thermocline in-between is employed for the water body and a non-inert conduction law for the ice cover. A thermal equilibrium approach results in temperature and ice thickness solutions, and a time scale analysis provides the applicability of the equilibrium method for lake ice climatology. Small bodies of water in densely populated areas have not yet been thoroughly studied in terms of their ice cover. Filling the existing research gap related to ice cover occurrence is therefore important for identifying natural processes (e.g., response to climate warming and water oxygenation in winter), and also has socio-economic significance (e.g., reducing the risk of loss of health and life for potential ice cover users). This paper addresses the issue of determining the utility of two simple empirical models based on the accumulated freezing degree-days (AFDD) formula for predicting maximum ice thickness in water bodies. The study covered 11 small anthropogenic water bodies located in the Katowice Upland and consisted of comparing the values obtained from modelling with actual ice thicknesses observed during three winter seasons (2009/2010, 2010/2011, and 2011/2012). The best fit was obtained between the values observed and those calculated using Stefan's formula with an empirical coefficient of 0.014. A poorer fit was obtained for Zubov's formula (with the exception of the 2011/2012 season), which is primarily due to the fact that this model does not account for the thickness of the snow accumulated on the ice cover. Bengst'cise forecasting of the state of the ice cover and the provision of the relevant information to interested users will increase the safety of using such water bodies in climate warming conditions, reducing the number of accidents. Recent investigations using polarimetric decomposition and numerical models have helped to improve the understanding of how radar signals interact with lake ice. However, further research is needed on how radar signals are impacted by varying lake ice properties. Radiative transfer (RT) models provide one method of improving this understanding. These are the first published experiments using the snow microwave RT (SMRT) model to investigate the response of different frequencies (L-, C-, and X-band) at horizontal-horizontal (HH) and vertical-vertical (VV) polarizations using various incidence angles (20°, 30°, and 40°) to changes in ice thickness, porosity, bubble radius, and ice–water interface roughness. This is also the first use of SMRT in combination with a thermodynamic lake ice model. Experiments were for a lake with tubular bubbles and one without tubular bubbles under difference scenarios. An analysis of the backscatter response to different properties indicates that increasing ice thickness and layer porosity have little impact on backscatter from lake ice. X-band backscatter shows increased response to surface ice layer bubble radius; however, this was limited to other frequencies except at shallower incidence angles (40°). All three frequencies display the largest response to increasing root mean square (rms) height at the ice–water interface, which supports surface scattering at the ice–water interface as being the dominant scattering mechanism. These results demonstrate that the SMRT is a valuable tool for understanding the response of backscatter to changes in freshwater lake ice properties and could be used in the development of inversion models. Lake ice thickness (LIT), a thematic product of lakes as an essential climate variable (ECV), is sensitive to changes in air temperature and on-ice snow mass. Here, a novel and efficient analytic method (retracking approach) is presented for the estimation of LIT from Ku-band (13.6 GHz) radar altimetry data. The new retracker, referred to as ${{\mathtt {LRM}}\_{}{\mathtt {LIT}}}$ , is based on the physical modeling of the conventional radar echoes (also called low-resolution mode or LRM) over ice-covered lakes that show a characteristic step-like feature in their leading edge attributed to the reflection of radar waves at the snow–ice and ice–water interfaces. The method is applied to Jason-2 and Jason-3 data acquired over Great Slave Lake, Canada, over three ice seasons (2013–2016). As expected, the agreement between the Jason-2 and Jason-3 LIT estimates over their overlapping period (2016 ice season) is excellent with a mean bias error of 0.013 m and root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.024 m. LIT estimates from ${{\mathtt {LRM}}\_{}{\mathtt {LIT}}}$ are in good agreement with simulations from a thermodynamic lake ice model and in situ measurements with RMSE values of the order of a few centimeters for the three winter seasons. The retracker also provides a robust way to assess the accuracy of LIT estimates which is in the order of 0.10 m when the ice cover is well established and prior to melt onset. In addition, ${{\mathtt {LRM}}\_{}{\mathtt {LIT}}}$ captures the seasonal transitions during the freeze-up and breakup periods and ice growth over different winter seasons, making it a promising method for monitoring inter-annual variability and trends in LIT from past and current conventional radar altimetry missions. Landfast ice plays an important role in the nearshore hydrodynamics of large lakes, such as the dampening of surface waves and currents. In this study, previously developed landfast ice basal stress parameterizations were added to an unstructured grid hydrodynamic ice model to represent the effects of grounded ice keels and tensile strength of ice cover. Numerical experiments using this model were conducted to evaluate the development of coastal landfast ice in Lake Superior. A sensitivity study of the free parameters was conducted from December 2018 to May 2021 to cover both high and low ice cover winters in Lake Superior and was compared against observations from the United States National Ice Center. The model reproduces the annual variation in coastal landfast ice in Lake Superior, particularly in shallow nearshore areas and the semi-enclosed bays in the northern regions of the lake. Experiments also show that the growth of landfast ice is mainly controlled by the free parameter that controls the critical ice thickness for the activation of basal stress. Ice plays key roles in regulating hydrological, ecological, biogeochemical, and socioeconomic functions of lakes. Long-term in situ lake ice phenological records indicate that lake ice is trending toward later freeze-up, earlier breakup, and a shorter ice duration. Parallel to study of lake ice using in situ records and process-based models, satellite remote sensing can expand our understanding of lake ice change over large spatial scales. However, most remote sensing studies have focused on large lakes or short periods of time, which may not robustly represent changes over multidecadal time periods or in the much more numerous small lakes. Here, we present a random forest model, Sensitive Lake Ice Detection (SLIDE), to accurately extract ice conditions from Landsat TM, ETM+, and OLI images. We trained the model using a manually labeled lake ice dataset (1089 labeled areas over 995 lakes globally). Our results show that our model achieves accurate classification between ice/snow and water (accuracy: 97.8%, kappa coefficient: 95.5%). Comparing Landsat-derived ice cover with in situ ice conditions, we show that our model produces less bias, lower RMSE, and higher kappa than does the Landsat snow/ice flag from the quality assessment band. This is especially true during the transitional period surrounding the ice on and off dates reported from in situ (mean bias −7.3% from our model, −17.3% from the Landsat quality band). Our results demonstrate the feasibility of mining the rich Landsat archive to study lake ice dynamics and of better flagging ice-affected lake observations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is a valuable tool for lake ice monitoring. The recently proposed SAR configuration for Earth observation called compact polarimetric (CP) SAR could be a good compromised choice between conventional (single or dual) and fully polarimetric (FP) SAR for operational ice applications, including lake ice. Given its enhanced radar target information compared with conventional SAR systems over wider swath coverage compared with FP SAR, CP systems could play important role in the new generation of Earth observation systems. Herein, we study the evolution of CP SAR parameters from simulated CP SAR data in relation to early ice growth. Focus of the study is on four lakes located in Cornwallis Island, Canadian Central Arctic. We adopt parameters extracted from dual circular polarimetric and right circular transmit, linear (horizontal and vertical) receive configurations. In this study, we consider the ice thickness calculated from an established empirical model. Meteorological and ice climatological data were used to support the analysis. Results demonstrated a potential connection between a number of CP parameters and lake ice growth. Furthermore, we were able to highlight the relationship between the density of air bubbles in ice layer and the intensity of volume scattering mechanism, leading to the identification of lakes with increased gas production activities. There are few studies where the evolution of grain orientations and crystal misorientations of neighboring grains in a polycrystalline ice sample during grain growth are analyzed. In this work, crystal orientations and misorientations were studied in two ice cylinders obtained from bidistilled water using the techniques of plastic replicas and chemical etching pits. The cylinders were grown, one through fast freezing and the other through slow freezing. It was observed that the initial crystal orientations of the grains varied from one cylinder to the other, but this did not result in significant differences in the final crystal misorientations between neighboring grains. Such crystal misorientations could be special because they are related to a coincidence sites lattice (CSL), which could be associated with low-energy grain boundaries. Therefore, the decrease in grain boundary energy during grain growth could be influenced by these special crystal misorientations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We quantified the relationships between seasonal air temperatures and ice phenology for a 0.54 km2 boreal lake in Northwestern Ontario, Canada using a 50‐year time series (1970–2019). Significant temporal trends in the duration of ice cover (−4.0 days decade−1) occurred over the study period and both ice‐on and ice‐off dates were highly predictable from seasonal air temperatures. While temporal trends in ice‐off dates were not significant, ice‐on dates trended later by 2.2 days decade−1, and both ice‐off dates and the duration of ice‐cover became increasingly variable over the study period. For three consecutive winter seasons, we also evaluated regional variations of ice‐phenology and snow and ice‐thickness from 9 to 30 boreal lakes across a lake size gradient (0.02–26 km2) using ground based and satellite observations. Regional variation of ice‐on dates (30–45 days), ice‐off dates (10–21 days), and total duration of ice‐cover (22–38 days) between lakes displayed significant nonlinear relationships to lake size across all years. Regional variation of ice‐off dates was structured according to lake size, and appeared driven by relationships between lake size, snow thickness, and ice thickness. Multiple linear regression and generalized additive modeling approaches to predict ice‐on and ice‐off dates at the regional scale by integrating the effects of air temperature and lake size had similar performance, explaining >90% of the variance of observed. Plain Language Summary: In this study, we used a continuous 50‐year data set of air temperature and ice phenology for a single boreal lake, and a combination of ground‐based and satellite observations to examine regional variation and drivers of ice phenology across 9–30 lakes near the IISD Experimental Lakes Area, Canada. Results indicated that ice‐cover duration declined by approximately 4 days per decade, and ice‐on and ice‐off dates were highly predictable based on seasonal air temperatures. Our regional analysis indicated that the duration of ice‐cover varied by approximately 1 month even for lakes in close proximity to one another and experienced similar weather conditions. This spatial variation of ice phenology was structured along a gradient of lake size. These results provide strong evidence of regional changes in climate since the 1970s and quantify the importance of air temperature and lake size in driving the duration of ice cover at a regional scale and can be incorporated with climate projections to estimate future ice‐conditions across lakes of varying sizes. Further to systematic experiments on the flexural strength of laboratory-grown, fresh water ice loaded cyclically, this paper describes results from new experiments of the same kind on lake ice harvested in Svalbard. The experiments were conducted at −12 °C, 0.1 Hz frequency and outer-fiber stress in the range from ~ 0.1 to ~ 0.7 MPa. The results suggest that the flexural strength increases linearly with stress amplitude, similar to the behavior of laboratory-grown ice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lake Hazen, the High Arctic's largest lake, has received an approximately 10-fold increase in glacial meltwater since its catchment glaciers shifted from net mass gain to net mass loss in 2007 common era (CE), concurrent with recent warming. Increased glacial meltwater can alter the ecological functioning of recipient aquatic ecosystems via changes to nutrient budgets, turbidity and thermal regimes. Here, we examine a rare set of five high-resolution sediment cores collected in Lake Hazen between 1990 and 2017 CE to investigate the influence of increased glacial meltwater versus alterations to lake ice phenology on ecological change. Subfossil diatom assemblages in all cores show two major shifts over the past approximately 200 years including: (i) a proliferation of pioneering, benthic taxa at approximately 1900 CE from previously depauperate populations; and (ii) a rise in planktonic taxa beginning at approximately 1980 CE to present-day dominance. The topmost intervals from each sequentially collected core provide exact dates and demonstrate that diatom regime shifts occurred decades prior to accelerated glacial inputs. These data show that diatom assemblages in Lake Hazen are responding primarily to intrinsic lake factors linked to decreasing duration of lake ice and snow cover rather than to limnological impacts associated with increased glacial runoff. Antarctic lakes with perennial ice covers provide the opportunity to investigate in-lake processes without direct atmospheric interaction, and to study their ice-cover sensitivity to climate conditions. In this study, a numerical model – driven by radiative, atmospheric and turbulent heat fluxes from the water body beneath the ice cover – was implemented to investigate the impact of climate change on the ice covers from two Antarctic lakes: west lobe of Lake Bonney (WLB) and Crooked Lake. Model results agreed well with measured ice thicknesses of both lakes (WLB – RMSE= 0.11 m over 16 years of data; Crooked Lake – RMSE= 0.07 m over 1 year of data), and had acceptable results with measured ablation data at WLB (RMSE= 0.28 m over 6 years). The differences between measured and modeled ablation occurred because the model does not consider interannual variability of the ice optical properties and seasonal changes of the lake's thermal structure. Results indicate that projected summer air temperatures will increase the ice-cover annual melting in WLB by 2050, but that the ice cover will remain perennial through the end of this century. Contrarily, at Crooked Lake the ice cover becomes ephemeral most likely due to the increase in air temperatures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lake ice supports a range of socio‐economic and cultural activities including transportation and winter recreational actives. The influence of weather patterns on ice‐cover dynamics of temperate lakes requires further understanding for determining how changes in ice composition will impact ice safety and the range of ecosystem services provided by seasonal ice cover. An investigation of lake ice formation and decay for three lakes in Central Ontario, Canada, took place over the course of two winters, 2015–2016 and 2016–2017, through the use of outdoor digital cameras, a Shallow Water Ice Profiler (upward‐looking sonar), and weekly field measurements. Temperature fluctuations across 0°C promoted substantial early season white ice growth, with lesser amounts of black ice forming later in the season. Ice thickening processes observed were mainly through meltwater, or midwinter rain, refreezing on the ice surface. Snow redistribution was limited, with frequent melt events limiting the duration of fresh snow on the ice, leading to a fairly uniform distribution of white ice across the lakes in 2015–2016 (standard deviations week to week ranging from 3 to 5 cm), but with slightly more variability in 2016–2017 when more snow accumulated over the season (5 to 11 cm). White ice dominated the end‐of‐season ice composition for both seasons representing more than 70% of the total ice thickness, which is a stark contrast to Arctic lake ice that is composed mainly of black ice. This research has provided the first detailed lake ice processes and conditions from medium‐sized north‐temperate lakes and provided important information on temperate region lake ice characteristics that will enhance the understanding of the response of temperate lake ice to climate and provide insight on potential changes to more northern ice regimes under continued climate warming. To gain more understanding of lake ice melting process, field research was carried out in an arctic tundra lake, Kilpisjärvi (surface area 37.1 km², maximum depth 57 m) in the melting periods of 2013 and 2014. The heat budget of the ice cover was dominated by the radiation balance; turbulent heat fluxes were large in 2013 due to warm air advection but small in 2014. Transmittance of solar radiation through ice was 0.25 in 2013 and 0.10 in 2014, snow-ice was absent in 2013 but in 2014 accounted for 50% of the ice cover. The melting rate was 4.4 cm d-1 in 2013, 1.9 cm d-1 in 2014. The portions of surface, bottom and internal melting were, respectively, 2.9, 1.0 and 0.5 cm d-1 in 2013 and 0.8, 1.0 and 0.1 cm d-1 in 2014. internal melting was realized in increase of ice porosity. in 2013 a rapid ice breakage event completed the ice breakup in short time when ice porosity had reached 40-50%. Autonomous temperature data loggers were used to measure the temperature profile within a growing ice cover and in the water below. The ice formed under natural conditions over the pond. We observed the presence of distinct layers of gas bubbles throughout the ice thickness. Temperature measurements allowed us to determine growth rates (μm s−1) and cooling rates (°C s−1) of the ice and demonstrated that these bubble layers formed during the peak ice growth rates from 0.58 to 0.92 µm s−1. The growth rates, leading to the formation of layers of bubbles, were more than an order of magnitude lower than for bubbles produced in controlled laboratory conditions (from 3 to 80 µm s−1). This observation introduces the possibility that solid impurities play a role in natural waters and that they must lower the limit of growth rates required for bubble occurrence. Data revealed a decrease in ice growth rates while cooling rates increased. We interpret this observation as an effect of the heat flux from the water to the ice (8.34–34.11 W m−2), and of gas concentration changes in the water below. Calculations of the ice thickness using traditional methods showed the necessity to include the heat flux from the water to the ice and the effect of gas bubbles within the ice and near the ice–water interface. A winter time series of ground-based (X- and Ku-bands) scatterometer and spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) (C-band) fully polarimetric observations coincident with in situ snow and ice measurements are used to identify the dominant scattering mechanism in bubbled freshwater lake ice in the Hudson Bay Lowlands near Churchill, Manitoba. Scatterometer observations identify two physical sources of backscatter from the ice cover: the snow–ice and ice–water interfaces. Backscatter time series at all frequencies show increases from the ice–water interface prior to the inclusion of tubular bubbles in the ice column based on in situ observations, indicating scattering mechanisms independent of double-bounce scatter. The co-polarized phase difference of interactions at the ice–water interface from both scatterometer and SAR observations is centered at 0° during the time series, also indicating a scattering regime other than double bounce. A Yamaguchi three-component decomposition of the RADARSAT-2 C-band time series is presented, which suggests the dominant scattering mechanism to be single-bounce off the ice–water interface with appreciable surface roughness or preferentially oriented facets, regardless of the presence, absence, or density of tubular bubble inclusions. This paper builds on newly established evidence of single-bounce scattering mechanism for freshwater lake ice and is the first to present a winter time series of ground-based and spaceborne fully polarimetric active microwave observations with polarimetric decompositions for bubbled freshwater lake ice. The radar backscatter response of snow covered lake and fjord ice is investigated using a ground based multifrequency synthetic aperture radar system operated in a tomographic configuration. Direct imaging of the snow and ice layering is achieved by focusing the signal from a two-dimensional (2-D) synthetic array in the 3-D space. A mathematical derivation describing the propagation of electromagnetic waves across a dense and multilayered complex medium with arbitrary but finite number of layers is presented. It is used to estimate the depth and refractive indices of the snow and ice layers from the tomograms employing a simple least-square optimization scheme. The lake and fjord ice datasets are compared with respect to their vertical stratification and estimated refractive indices. The vertical structure of the reflectivity of the snow-covered lake ice is investigated and compared at two different frequencies, X-, and C-band. It is found that snow and ice volume responses at C-band are very low compared to the corresponding responses at X-band. The seasonal dynamics of freshwater lake ice and its interactions with air and snow are studied in two small subarctic lakes with comparable surface areas but contrasting depths (4.3 versus 91 m). Two, 2.9 m long thermistor chain sensors (Snow and Ice Mass Balance Apparatuses), were used to remotely measure air, snow, ice, and water temperatures every 15-min between December 2021 and March 2022. Results showed that freeze-up occurred later in the deeper lake (Ryan Lake) and earlier in the shallow lake (Landing Lake). Ice growth was significantly faster in Ryan Lake than in Landing Lake, due to cold water temperatures (mean (T w ¯) =0.65 to 0.96°C) persisting beneath the ice. In Landing Lake, basal ice growth was hindered because of warm water temperatures (T w ¯ =1.5 to 2.1°C) caused by heat released from lake sediments. Variability in air temperatures at both lakes had significant influences on the thermal regimes of ice and snow, particularly in Ryan Lake, where ice temperatures were more sensitive to rapid changes in air temperatures. This finding suggests that conductive heat transfer through the air-water continuum may be more sensitive to variability in air temperatures in deeper lakes with colder water temperatures than in shallow lakes with warmer water temperatures, if snow depths and densities are comparable. This study highlights the significance of lake morphology and rapid air temperature variability on influencing ice growth processes. Observations of lake ice at the shore, complete ice cover, ice duration, ice thickness and other measures for 18 Polish lakes were collected for the 50 year period (1961–2010). Average ice dates in early winter became later: first appearance of ice along shore 2.3 days decade −1 and complete ice cover 1.2 days decade −1 while complete ice cover disappeared earlier (5.6 days decade −1 ) as did last ice at the shore (4.3 days decade −1 ). The duration of ice cover decreased by 5.6 days decade −1 and average ice thickness declined by 6.1 cm decade −1 . The magnitude of these values for individual lakes decreased from eastern to western Poland. This geographic gradient is likely related to regional atmospheric circulation because in winter this part of Europe is strongly affected by continental air, an influence that is greater in the east. A multivariate redundancy analysis (RDA), used in order to examine the dependence of ice measures on lake physical properties and location, indicated longitude and altitude as key factors explaining lake ice dynamics such as the disappearance of ice and ice cover, ice cover duration and thickness. The temporal evolution of the backscatter coefficient, sigma-nought (σ°) from QuikSCAT was evaluated for monitoring ice phenology on Great Bear Lake (66°N, 121°W) and Great Slave Lake (61°40′N, 114°W), Northwest Territories, Canada. Results indicated that σ° from QuikSCAT can be used to detect melt onset, water clear of ice and freeze onset dates on both lakes. An ice phenology algorithm was then developed to assess the spatiotemporal variability on both lakes from QuikSCAT for the period 2000–2006. Results showed that for Great Slave Lake, the average melt onset date occurred on year day (YD) 123, the average water clear of ice date was on YD164, and the average freeze onset date was on YD330. On Great Bear Lake, the average melt onset date occurred on YD139, the average water clear of ice date was YD191, and the average freeze onset date was YD321. Ice cover remained present for at least five weeks longer on Great Bear Lake than on Great Slave Lake and most of the difference can be explained by earlier ice melt on Great Slave Lake. Spatially, on Great Bear Lake, melt onset took place first in the eastern arm, water clear of ice occurred first in southeastern and western arms, and freeze onset appeared first in the northern arm and along the shorelines. On Great Slave Lake, melt onset began first in the central basin and then progressed to the northern and eastern arms later in the season. The central basin of Great Slave Lake cleared earlier than the periphery due to the discharge from the Slave River. Freeze onset on Great Slave Lake occurred first within the east arm, closely followed by the north and west arms, and then finally in the centre of the main basin. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Ice cover in the Hudson Bay region (HBR) goes through a complete cryogenic cycle each year. Freeze-up typically occurs in October and November, ice cover reaches its peak thickness from late March to May, and water bodies in the HBR are usually ice-free beginning in early August. In this study, the timing and magnitude of the annual peak in ice thickness were identified for each year from weekly ice observations compiled by the Canadian Ice Service. The Mann*Kendall test was used to determine the statistical significance of the temporal trends, and their magnitude was estimated using the Theil-Sen approach. The results indicate an asymmetry in temporal trends of land-fast ice thickness; statistically significant thickening of the ice cover over time was detected on the western side of Hudson Bay, while a slight thinning lacking statistical significance was observed on the eastern side. This asymmetry is related to the variability of air temperature, snow depth, and the dates of ice freeze-up and break-up. Increasing maximum ice thickness at a number of stations is correlated to earlier freeze-up due to negative temperature trends in autumn. Nevertheless, changes in maximum ice thickness were reciprocal to the variability in the amount of snow covering the ground. These results are in contrast to the projections from general circulation models (GCMs), and to the reduction in sea-ice extent and thickness observed in other regions of the Arctic. In the event of a maritime oil spill in winter conditions, the fate of oil released under ice presents considerable difficulties with respect to detection, containment and recovery compared to spills that form slicks in open water. This study presents the first quantification of roughness and associated storage capacity of the ice-water interface for freshwater ice in the Laurentian Great Lakes in North America. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) observations are used to retrieve ice thicknesses every 2.5 cm on a grid over ice ranging between 0.26 and 0.48 m in the Straits of Mackinac to derive a digital elevation model of the ice bottom. The root mean square of height deviations of the ice underside is observed to be 0.03 m (over a correlation length of approximately 20 m) with a storage capacity of 0.03 m3/m2. The observed physical characteristics relevant to oil entrainment at the ice underside are similar to those reported for first year sea ice and may store similar quantities of oil during the initial spill. However, the difference in the physical structure between first year ice (with brine channels) and freshwater ice (consolidated ice cap) may result in a disparity in the timing of oil appearance, and require considerably different remediation treatment. • Ground Penetrating Radar is utilized to retrieve freshwater ice thickness (R 2 = 0.86). • Height deviations (roughness) of ice is 0.03 m over correlation length of ~20 m. • Storage capacity of fresh ice bottom is similar to first year sea ice (0.03 m3/m2). • Oil recovery methods for spills under sea ice may be applicable for freshwater. This study examines links between two sets of parameters obtained from Radarsat-2 Quad-pol data and geophysical information of lake ice and landfast sea ice in the Resolute Bay area, Nunavut, Canada. The first set includes the three orthogonal backscatter coefficients ( σ hh 0 , σ vv 0 , σ vh 0 ) in addition to the total backscatter power (SPAN). The second set includes polarimetric decomposition parameters obtained using Cloude-Pottier and Yamaguchi decomposition methods. Data were collected during the early freezing period from 20 September until 28 December 2017. Meteorological and ice climatological data from the weather station of Resolute Bay were used to facilitate this task. Ice thickness and salinity were obtained from established empirical models. Results show that single-bounce and multiple-bounce scattering mechanisms are active in lake ice during the entire freezing period while multiple-bounce scattering is active in sea ice only during the initial freezing. Backscatter parameters can be used to determine the thickness of lake ice up to any depth, while both backscatter and the tested decomposition parameters are related to the thickness of young sea ice (<30 cm thick). Physical explanations are offered in each case. Spatial maps of ice thickness are produced. Polarimetric decomposition parameters demonstrate erratic behavior throughout the development of lake ice. High entropy (>0.6) is found to be associated with comparable single- and multiple-bounce scattering mechanisms, hence can be used to identify new ice. Orthogonal backscatter coefficients and polarimetric decomposition parameters provide different information, yet their combination offers clues to better identify ice conditions and investigate questions about scattering mechanisms. • Backscatter parameters determine the thickness of lake ice up to any depth. • Backscatter parameters are related to the thickness of young sea ice. • Entropy and Alpha angle are related to the thickness of young sea ice. Lake ice is a dominant component of Canada's landscape and can act as an indicator for how freshwater aquatic ecosystems are changing with warming climates. While lake ice monitoring through government networks has decreased in the last three decades, the increased availability of remote sensing images can help to provide consistent spatial and temporal coverage for areas with annual ice cover. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data are commonly used for lake ice monitoring, due to the acquisition of images in any condition (time of day or weather). Using Sentinel-1 A/B images, a high-density time series of SAR images was developed for Lake Hazen in Nunavut, Canada, from 2015–2018. These images were used to test two different methods of monitoring lake ice phenology: one method using the first difference between SAR images and another that applies the Otsu segmentation method. Ice phenology dates determined from the two methods were compared with visual interpretation of the Sentinel-1 images. Mean errors for the pixel comparison of the first difference method ranged 3–10 days for ice-on and ice-off, while average error values for the Otsu method ranged 2–10 days. Mean errors for comparisons of different sections of the lake ranged 0–15 days for the first difference method and 2–17 days for the Otsu method. Remote sensing of ice phenology for small lakes is hindered by a lack of satellite observations with both high temporal and spatial resolutions. By merging multi-source satellite data over individual lakes, we present a new algorithm that successfully estimates ice freeze and thaw timing for lakes with surface areas as small as 0.13 km2 and obtains consistent results across a range of lake sizes. We have developed an approach for classifying ice pixels based on the red reflectance band of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) imagery, with a threshold calibrated against ice fraction from Landsat Fmask over each lake. Using a filter derived from the Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications, version 2 (MERRA-2) surface air temperature product, we removed outliers in the time series of lake ice fraction. The time series of lake ice fraction was then applied to identify lake ice breakup and freezeup dates. Validation results from over 296 lakes in Maine indicate that the satellite-based lake ice timing detection algorithm perform well, with mean absolute error (MAE) of 5.54 days for breakup dates and 7.31 days for freezeup dates.
