Fluorite ornaments have been recorded in different sites of Europe since Upper Paleolithic. Due to its visual appearance and physical properties, some translucent or transparent mineralogies like fluorite were searched for or casually acquired by late prehistory’s human communities. After intensive research on archaeological contexts from the Iberian Peninsula with personal ornaments from 4th to 2nd millennia BCE, we have recently identified and characterized for the first time an important number of fluorite ornaments, confronting a previous background where little attention was paid. Our work has been carried out in different archaeological collections and museums from the whole Iberian Peninsula by non-destructive techniques (Raman spectroscopy, portable X-ray fluorescence (p-XRF) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD), that revealed the nature of fluorite ornaments and points to its consideration as scarce and highly symbolic items during late prehistory. A total of 36 fluorite beads from 23 sites are here recorded and studied, many of them unpublished or wrong catalogued as other mineralogies. These adornments could have important roles in trade and use among the communities of Iberia from the 4th millennium BCE onwards, because of their scarcity and its recurrent association with important funerary complex and exotic materials. Fluorite ornaments could have been significant and special symbols in the development of new and exclusive raw materials in the context of increasing social complexity and inequality.

Esta investigación es la primera síntesis y la primera propuesta morfodescriptiva de hogares de del Nordeste de la Península Ibérica del periodo cronocultural entre el Neolítico y la edad del Bronce. Este trabajo intenta crear una herramienta útil en el campo de la arqueológica a través de la creación de un Corpus de hogares y contribuir a una mejor comprensión de las estructuras de combustión. Se ha realizado el análisis y estudio de toda una serie de variables relacionadas para caracterizar los diferentes tipos de hogares con el objetivo de responder a las problemáticas planteadas sobre una muestra de 548 hogares de 90 yacimientos arqueológicos. Este estudio ha permitido conocer la variabilidad existente a nivel tipológico de estructuras de combustión y la evolución cronocultural y funcionalidad., This research is the first synthesis and morpho typological proposal of Northeast homes in the Iberian Peninsula throughout the chronocultural period ranged between the Neolithic and the Bronze Age. This paper attempts to create a useful tool in the field of archaeology through the creation of a corpus of homes and contribute to a better understanding of the structures of combustion. The analysis and study of a number of variables, related to characterize the different types of households, has been performed in order to respond to the issues raised on a sample of 548 households from 90 archaeological sites. This study has shown the existing typological variability of combustion structures level, chronocultural evolution and functionality.

El treball que es presenta és l’estudi aprofundit del conjunt ceràmic de l’horitzó Prehalaf del jaciment de Tell Halula, a la vall mitjana del riu Èufrates (Síria). L’objectiu de l’estudi és aportar dades sobre les característiques tecnològiques, morfològiques i tipològiques al corpus de coneixement del jaciment. Aquestes dades permetran inferir interpretacions de tipus socioeconòmic en el debat sobre els canvis que es produeixen entre l’horitzó de neolític preceràmic i el neolític amb ceràmica. En la tesi s’estudien quina era la tecnologia emprada, determinar l’origen de les produccions (locals o importades), localitzar les fonts d’aprovisionament del les matèries primeres i la seva caracterització mineralògica. Proposar una cadena operativa. Establir un catàleg de formes i categories. Estudiar els diferents tipus de ceràmica a partir de les formes i decoracions i participar en el debat sobre el moment l’aparició d’aquest material (artefacte) en el context del Neolític de Llevant amb pràctiques agrícoles i ramaderes ben consolidades a l’inici del VII mil·lenni Cal BC i en quins llocs es dona. És a dir, si es tracta d’un fenomen focalitzat en un sol lloc o zona geogràfica o bé si participa d’un fenomen poligènic d’abast macro regional., The work presented is the depth study of ceramic assemblage from the prehalaf horizon arqueological site of Tell Halula, in the middle Euphrates River valley (Syria). The aim of the study is to provide data on the technological, morphological and typological characteristics, of the body of knowledge of the site. These data will allow to infer interpretations of socioeconòmics, in the debate on the changes that occur between the Horizon pre-ceramic neolithic and neolithic ceramic. The thesis examines wich whas the technology used, determines the source of production (local or imported), locate the sources of supply of raw materials and their mineralogical characterization. To propose an operational chain. Establishes a catalog of forms and categories. Studies the different types of pottery from the shapes and decorations and participates in the debate on the timing of this material (artifact) in the context of the eastern neolithic agricultural and livestock practice well established at the beginning of the seventh millennium Cal BC and where it occurs. That is, if it is a localized phenomena in one place or geographical area or if it is part of a polygenic phenomenon of macro regional scope.

This paper shows the prehistoric mining tools recovered during the archaeological field-walking surveys and excavations of the variscite mines’ of Palazuelo de las Cuevas (Aliste disctrict, Zamora) and Pico Centeno (Encinasola, Huelva). Knapped stone mining tools are not absent of the Iberian prehistoric mines, but they appear in low frequency and, probably for that reason, had not attracted scholars’ attention. A way to inquire on the morphological characteristics and technological qualities of these objects is through the so called analysis of techno-functional units. Technique, shape, function, and use-wear distributions are identified along the artefact’s techno-functional units in order to propose how these tools were used. This approach shows, among other aspects, how ancient miners designed and used multifunctional tools. Regarding the comparison of the ensembles from these two mining districts there are enough differences as for considering them as two independent technological traditions. It is argued that these differences are most probably related to the different scale of production calculated between Palazuelo de las Cuevas and Pico Centeno., Se presentan las herramientas prehistóricas de minería recuperadas en prospecciones y excavaciones de las minas de variscita de Palazuelo de las Cuevas (Aliste, Zamora) y Pico Centeno (Encinasola, Huelva). Los útiles de piedra tallada no son raros en los contextos mineros prehistóricos peninsulares aunque, probablemente debido a que aparecen con poca frecuencia, no han despertado gran interés. Aquí planteamos una aproximación a las características morfológicas y capacidades tecnológicas de estos artefactos mediante el análisis de las unidades tecnofuncionales. A través de la identificación de características como la técnica de obtención, la forma y la funcionalidad de las distintas zonas de un útil, junto con la valoración de su distribución a lo largo de la pieza y la constatación de la presencia o ausencia de huellas de uso, creemos posible averiguar el modo de utilización de estos objetos. Así, hemos identificado que los mineros prehistóricos diseñaron y emplearon herramientas compuestas o multifuncionales. Al comparar el utillaje de ambos distritos mineros creemos haber encontrado suficientes diferencias como para hablar de dos tradiciones tecnológicas independientes que, según se argumenta, creemos que son debidas a que las minas zamoranas fueron explotadas a una escala mayor.

In 1997, under the coordination of Era-Arqueología, aerial photographs, surface surveys and archaeological excavations were carried out at the Neolithic- Chalcolithic site at Perdigões (Reguengos de Monsaraz, Portugal). As a result, a quite accurate idea of the general layout of the site was achieved, allowing archaeologists to continue working there for more than ten years. In 2006, a new collaboration project was started to boost research at Perdigões, with the participation of several international public and private institutions, amongst which is the University of Málaga. The earliest contribution of the Spanish-Portuguese cooperation is the geophysical surveys performed in 2008 and 2009, which show Perdigões as a juxtaposition of several subcircular ditched enclosures, articulated with a funerary area and a cromlech., En 1997, bajo la coordinación de Era-Arqueología, se efectuaron fotografías aéreas, prospecciones superficiales y sondeos arqueológicos en el yacimiento neolítico-calcolítico de Perdigões (Reguengos de Monsaraz, Portugal), donde, durante más de diez años, se han venido articulando las distintas actuaciones hasta disponer de un esbozo bastante aproximado de su planta. En 2006, se abrió un programa de colaboración entre diversas instituciones internacionales públicas y privadas para impulsar la investigación en Perdigões, en el seno del cual se integra un equipo de la Universidad de Málaga. Como primera aportación concreta de la cooperación hispano-lusa, las prospecciones geofísicas llevadas a cabo en 2008 y 2009 han acrecentado el conocimiento de la traza del sitio. Muestra Perdigões como la yuxtaposición de múltiples recintos de foso subcirculares, que se articulan con un área de necrópolis y un crómlech.

We present archaeoastronomical results of an interdisciplinary project to study Bronze Age sites of the socalled Cultura de las Motillas in the Spanish region of La Mancha. We find that winter solstice sunrise was of special importance in the funerary and perhaps religious practises of these peoples. The impressive megalithic monumental complex of Castillejo del Bonete shows a remarkable marker of the winter solstice sunrise on the most peculiar mountain of its horizon as well as alignments with this and other singular solar events as equinox and summer solstice. There seems to be a correspondence between the orientations of some of the main architectural structures of the monument and the general arrangement of two of the main galleries of a natural cave that lies just beneath it. Markers and orientations to the winter solstice sunrise seem to be present in other nearby contemporary sites such as the necropolis of Cerro Ortega and the motilla of El Azuer. Castillejo del Bonete stands as the first evidence of a clear solar marker in a megalithic site of the Iberian Peninsula, indicating that the precise location of the monument was carefully chosen. The alignments defined by several of its structures further reinforce its astronomical symbolism.

Documento PDF de la presentación realizada en el congreso internacional INSPIRE CONFERENCE 2016., The Center for Social Sciences and Humanities (CCHS) of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) puts forward IDEArq, a platform focused on Cultural Heritage research dissemination within the interoperability framework of Spatial Data Infrastructures. Several georeferenced archaeological collections, product of the research carried out through many years will be available within IDEArq, arranging a thematic Spatial Data Infrastructure that is closely related to INSPIRE’s Annex I Protected Sites theme. Two significant datasets are currently available: the “Radiocarbon Date Archive for Andorra, Portugal and peninsular Spain” offering more than 8,000 C14 dates for archaeological samples and the “Corpus of Levantine Rock Art (CPRL)” with more than 3,000 images from 94 Levantine style rock art sites. A wide chronological and spatial framework, comprising all Recent Prehistory and the entire Iberian Peninsula ensure a strong interest from different communities. An OGC compliant Web Map Service and a geoportal (www.idearqueologia.org) with a map viewer grant direct access to the datasets and related documentation. Generic information about the archaeological sites, such as a chronological and functional description, is available along with the archaeological research data related to them. More datasets will be soon available, such as the Isotopic dataset for the Iberian Peninsula (isotopic values of strontium, oxygen, carbon and nitrogen to study diet and mobility), in an effort to build up a scientific Spatial Data Infrastructure, looking for a framework of scientific research data dissemination through SDI’s means.[EN]

Variscite body ornament is conspicuous to Iberian Late Prehistory communities. Three variscite outcrops with evidences of ancient exploitation are known in Iberia. In this paper we show the results of a survey performed in the Terena Synform, where Pico Centeno mining complex (Encinasola, Huelva) is located. We recorded 7 variscite extraction points, 4 trench mines, and numerous prehistoric mining tools. Excavations committed on PCM2 have show evidence of how mining works were developed. La utilización de adornos de variscita en la Península Ibérica durante la Prehistoria Reciente está muy extendida. Sin embargo sólo se conocen tres afloramientos de este mineral verde con evidencias de minería antigua. Estas páginas presentan los resultados de las prospecciones en uno de ellos, el complejo minero de Pico Centeno (Encinasola, Huelva), donde se han documentado 7 puntos de extracción y 4 minas de tipo trinchera acompañados de utillaje minero prehistórico. La excavación de la mina PCM2 nos permite indagar cómo funcionó la explotación y advertir una tecnología minera diferente a la conocida para otras materias primas como sílex o cobre.

Estudios recientes indican que las motillas, asentamientos de la Edad del Bronce de La Mancha, pudieron ser las más antiguas captaciones de agua subterránea en la Península Ibérica. Pero ¿por qué no existen motillas en el Campo de Montiel, territorio ubicado tradicionalmente en esta área cultural? En Castillejo del Bonete, sitio arqueológico situado en esa comarca, existe una cueva que fue utilizada y sellada durante la Prehistoria Reciente. Se presenta ahora la primera investigación paleohidrogeológica interdisciplinar en La Mancha, que ha analizado manantiales y niveles de agua subterránea del acuífero de Campo de Montiel, así como el interior de la sima de Castillejo del Bonete. Las conclusiones avanzan una relación entre el sustrato hidrogeomorfológico y la distribución espacial de las motillas. Además permiten descartar que la sima de Castillejo del Bonete fuera utilizada como mina o como acceso al acuífero, dos de las hipótesis de trabajo planteadas. Recent studies show that the motillas of the Bronze Age in La Mancha contain the oldest wells in the Iberian Peninsula. But why are there no motillas in Campo de Montiel, a territory traditionally placed inside this cultural area? In Castillejo del Bonete, an archaeological site located in Campo de Montiel, there is a cave used and sealed during Late Prehistory. We here report the first paleohidrogeological interdisciplinary research in La Mancha, analyzing some spring and freatic levels from the Campo de Montiel aquifer, as well as from inside the Castillejo del Bonete chasm. Our findings suggest an association between the hydrogeological substrate and the spatial distribution of the motillas, discarding the idea that the chasm at Castillejo del Bonete could be a mine or an aquifer access. This supports the idea that Castillejo del Bonete was an exceptional symbolic monument during the Chalcolithic and the Bronze Age, within a new type of site of the cultural group of the Bronze Age of La Mancha.

En este trabajo se plantean distintas posibilidades de uso de la fauna entre las primeras sociedades campesinas y metalúrgicas, tomando como ejemplo la Península Ibérica y sus islas próximas. El auge experimentado en la última década en las revisiones zooarqueológicas, sumado a un renovado interés en la industria ósea y la incorporación cada vez más frecuente de las alteraciones tafonómicas, dio lugar a un alto número de publicaciones españolas que trata directa o indirectamente el tema de la fauna. Aquí se presenta el registro arqueológico existente comparándolo con los hallazgos de otras zonas, períodos inmediatamente posteriores y registros escritos, para ampliar las discusiones habituales sobre las faunas recuperadas en sitios prehistóricos y abarcar los distintos aspectos sociales en los que los animales pudieron haber participado., This paper discusses different possibilities for the use of animals by early agricultural and metallurgical societies, considering the case of the Iberian Peninsula and neighboring islands. En este artículo se aborda el análisis de la casuística conocida de reutilizaciones en época romana de lugares prehistóricos de carácter ritual en el Sur de la Península Ibérica. Los casos analizados se agrupan en tres categorías: (i) proximidad o solapamiento espacial de necrópolis prehistóricas y romanas, (ii)utilización funeraria y cultual de espacios interiores y exteriores de cámaras funerarias prehistóricas, (iii) reutilización de santuarios rupestres y estelas prehistóricas. Como conclusión se sugiere, primero, la necesidad de un replanteamiento de los criterios de registro y análisis empírico con que estos casos son abordados; segundo, la conveniencia de una reinterpretación completa de los mismos que parta de tener en cuenta los elementos de tradición y memoria que los sitios sagrados tienen dentro de las sociedades iberorromanas; y tercero, su valoración en clave de ideología religiosa e ideología política. This paper tackles the analysis of a series of cases of reutilisation in Roman times of prehistoric sacred spaces and monuments, recorded throughout the South of the Iberian Peninsula. The cases under study are grouped in three main categories: (i) spatial proximity or overlapping of prehistoric and Roman burial areas, (ii) reutilisation of the inner and outer spaces of prehistoric mortuary chambers, and (iii) re-use of rock art sanctuaries and prehistoric stelae. As a conclusion, we suggest, firstly, the need to reconsider the recording criteria by which the appearance of later materials in old monuments is archaeologically assessed; secondly, we point out the need to look at these cases from the viewpoint of the elements of tradition and memory that some old sacred sites convey for the Iberian-Roman populations. Finally, we suggest these cases must be interpreted in terms of religious and political ideology.

A la hora de valorar las diferentes hipótesis planteadas sobre el desarrollo social en la Prehistoria Reciente del Sureste de la Península Ibérica creemos que es necesario acometer la discusión de cuatro aspectos fundamentales: 1) el factor que se considera como impulsor del cambio social y su carácter externo (por ejemplo clima) o interno respecto a la sociedad en cuestión; 2) los elementos cuyo control y apropiación se consideran como dinamizadores del proceso de acumulación (productos, fuerza de trabajo, medios de trabajo, condiciones naturales de la producción, etc.); 3) la utilización de la base empírica disponible; 4) la caracterización del grado de desarrollo social y sus cambios temporales (tribu, jefatura, estado, etc.). Naturalmente todos estos aspectos están vinculados a la orientación teórica de los investigadores pero son remarcados en mayor o menor grado en sus obras a lo largo del tiempo por lo que desarrollamos una perspectiva de análisis que tenga en cuenta esa evolución a partir, sobre todo, de las diferencias en el tratamiento del segundo aspecto. We believe that it is necessary to address four fundamental aspects when evaluating different hypotheses about social development in the late prehistory of the Iberian southeast: 1) the factors considered to be the driving forces behind social change, and their external (e.g. climate) or internal nature with respect to the society in question; 2) the elements whose control and appropriation are considered to be the key dynamic elements in the process of accumulation (products, labour force, means of labour, natural conditions of production, etc.); 3) the use of the available empirical base; and 4) the characterisation of the degree of social development and temporary changes (tribe, chiefdom, state, etc.). All these aspects are linked to the theoretical orientation of researchers, and are emphasised to a greater or lesser extent in their work over time. For this reason we have developed an analytical perspective that bears this evolution in mind by specially focusing on the different treatment of the second of these aspects.

Nuestra propuesta sobre el desarrollo de la jerarquización social en el Sudeste de la Península Ibérica ha tenido en cuenta que, durante el devenir histórico, diferentes han sido las formas de acceder a la acumulación desigual de riqueza. De esta forma, aunque enfatizamos como factor inicial el control inicial de la fuerza de trabajo (femenina y masculina), mostramos la importancia fundamental que adquiere el control de los medios de trabajo móviles (los animales) como condición para asegurar la posición de las élites que, desde ese nuevo impulso, ejercerán un mayor control no sólo sobre la fuerza de trabajo directamente sino sobre ésta a partir de la apropiación por la clase-estado de los medios de producción inertes (la tierra). Our work on the development of social hierarchization in Southeast of Iberia has taken into account that throughout history there have been different ways for groups to arrive at unequal accumulation of wealth. Although we emphasise that the control of labour force (female and male) is an initial factor, we also suggest that the control of mobile means of labour (animals) takes on fundamental importance as a condition for ensuring the position of the elites who, from this newly enhanced position, will exercise greater control over the labour force, not only directly, but also through the appropriation by the class-state of the inert means of production (land).
