The article reports on the study conducted to determine the association of on-treatment diastolic blood pressure (BP), mortality rate, and cardiovascular events in the "Systolic Hypertension" in Europe. Elderly patients diagnosed with systolic hypertension received active study drug in the first phase of the study, followed by analysis on the outcome of multivariate Cox regression analysis, during the receipt of placebo and during active treatment. The study shows that intensified antihypertensive treatment, can prevent cardiovascular attacks when systolic BP of older patients with systolic hypertension is not under control.
