Femicide constitutes a leading cause of premature deaths for women, yet it has been the subject of limited research until recently. Enhanced data collection and analysis on killings of women and girls are necessary to understand and address this unrelenting phenomenon. This study examines all cases of female homicide encountered at the Institute of Legal Medicine of Milan (Italy) spanning from 1999 to 2019; data from 2020/2021 were shown separately given the bias that the forced cohabitation and stay at home during the lockdowns of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic may represent regarding violence against women and femicide. In this study, specific factors were considered, including the age and nationality of the victims, the place of recovery of the bodies, the victim's relationship to the perpetrator and the injuries they suffered. As a result, 200 female killings were found among the over 15,000 autopsies and 535 homicides investigated at the Institute of Legal Medicine of Milan from 1999 to 2019, representing an average of 9.5 femicides yearly. The majority of victims were Italian (74%) and half were aged between 18 and 49 years old. The killings were overwhelmingly committed in the domestic setting (78.5%) by male perpetrators (at least 85%), related to the victims as intimate or ex-intimate partners and members of the family (73.5%). The homicides were mainly perpetrated with sharp (32%) or blunt instruments (21.5%), shooting (18.5%) and asphyxiation (16.5%). This study is part of a growing effort to enhance data collection and analysis on femicide. Studying and monitoring the rates of femicide (or "femicide watch") will permit to better understand, reduce, and finally end femicide globally.

Personal identification of faces represents a challenging issue, especially for what concerns the quantification of the comparison. The 3D-3D superimposition approach proved to distinguish between matches and mismatches. However, the potential of this procedure applied to cases where only parts of faces are visible still has to be verified. This study aimed at verifying the applicability of a 3D-3D procedure to faces divided into three thirds. 3D models of fifty male subjects acquired through stereophotogrammetry were used. The 3D facial models were divided into upper, middle, and lower thirds and registered onto other models belonging to the same and different individuals according to the least point-to-point distance. In total, 50 matches and 50 mismatches were analyzed. RMS value (root mean square) of point-to-point distance between the two facial surfaces was calculated through VAM® software. Statistically significant differences between matches and mismatches in each facial third were assessed through Mann-Whitney test (p 0.05). On average, RMS value in matches was 0.32 ± 0.12 mm in upper third, 0.36 ± 0.15 mm in middle third, and 0.40 ± 0.20 mm in lower third, respectively; in mismatches, RMS value was 1.40 ± 0.32 mm in upper third, 1.96 ± 0.58 mm in middle third, and 2.39 ± 0.90 mm in lower third, respectively. Differences in RMS values between matches and mismatches were significantly different for all facial thirds, without superimpositions (p 0.01). This study shows that the existing 3D-3D superimposition methods may be useful also when only a limited portion of face is visible in ideal conditions. Their application to forensic cases of identification still needs to be verified.

A correct assessment on the position, path, and direction of fracture lines is crucial when the sequence of different injuries on the skull has to be ascertained. In this context, the so-called Puppe's rule on intersecting fracture lines has always been considered a cornerstone of such an investigation. However, there is one factor that has never been previously considered: how do fracture lines behave when they reach the edges of an old and remodeled hole from a previous craniotomy? Two peculiar cases are presented of subjects undergoing cranial fractures due to blunt force trauma (case 1) and gunshot (case 2). Both previously underwent neurosurgical operations with persistence of the burr holes produced by the craniotomy drill (15 and 20 years before death). What was arguable, according to Puppe's rule, was that the fracture lines, when at the edge of the craniotomy hole, stopped. However, what has been detected was different than what expected: fracture lines continued exactly in the opposite direction, as though they were "skipping" the hole, following the same direction and the same axis and stopping a few centimeters over on the opposite side of the craniotomy hole. Puppe's rule has never been refuted, but these cases are the closest to an exception ever seen in forensic anthropology.

Human decomposition in sea water poses several challenges to forensic practitioners tasked with the analysis of drowned bodies. Postmortem changes in the marine environment have not been extensively investigated and the current literature is mainly based on bodies retrieved from shallow waters or on limited samples. On 18 April 2015, a fishing boat carrying allegedly 1,000 migrants sank in the Mediterranean Sea. In a fifteen-month time span, humanitarian missions were carried out to recover the bodies from the sea. The present study investigates postmortem changes on the drowned victims in a non-sequestered environment in the Mediterranean Sea. A retrospective study was performed by two observers on the autopsy photographic records in the series of bodies recovered from the open sea. For 184 bodies, the postmortem changes were evaluated according to facial, body, limb, and total aquatic decomposition score (FADS, BADS, LADS, TADS, respectively). Furthermore, a modification to the current scoring system that divides upper and lower limbs was suggested. The interobserver agreement was assessed using Krippendorff’s alpha coefficient. Possible relations between the decomposition scores and PMSI were investigated with Pearson correlation analysis. According to the sequence of the recovery missions, increasing FADS, BADS, LADS, and TADS were observed. Hair can retain important biological traces for forensic investigations. Forensic scientists are used to looking for such traces on clothing and skin of victims, however, when decomposition kicks in and all that remains of the victims is the skeleton, hair may be the only tissue representing the surface of the body at the time of a crime on which biological traces of an aggressor may have been left and still be detectable. Given the lack of research on this topic, this pilot study aims to assess the capacity of hair to retain semen and blood in hair, and the possibility to detect these fluids with well-known techniques and to obtain a useful genetic profile even when exposed to environmental conditions (Open Natural Environment (woods), Open Man Made Environment (urban)) for three months. Results showed that both traces were always visible and detectable with almost all techniques in the Control Environment, while in the two open environments some difficulties arose. However, biomolecular analysis was effective up to three months on both fluids in the Natural Environment and up to two months and one week respectively on blood and semen in the Man Made Environment. The Combur Test, OBTI, and Luminol were effective on blood up to three months in both environments while Sperm-HY-Liter and observation of cellular components were effective on semen up to at least 1 month and PSA testing was positive up to 1 week in both environments. The present work can be considered an encouraging starting point for the analysis of biological traces on hair in forensic contexts, regardless of the PMI, since blood and semen related to a crime may survive.

Forensic anthropologists tasked with identification of skeletal remains often have to set up new strategies to overcome the limitations of conventional individualizing markers. A sound acquaintance with non-metric traits is essential for a reliable distinction between normal variations and pathological or traumatic conditions, yet the role of cranial variants in the identification process is still somehow ill-defined. One hundred crania (50 males and 50 females) of known sex and age were selected from the Collezione Antropologica LABANOF (a documented contemporary skeletal collection) and non-metric traits were scored as present or absent and by side. The frequencies of 13 traits were used to calculate the compound probabilities to find an individual with an exact combination of cranial features in the worldwide population. The probabilities of the majority of the individuals (53%) are within the 1 out of 10 million–1 out of 1 million interval. However, a fair number of subjects (25%) of the sample have the probabilities falling into the 1 out of 1 billion–1 out of 100 million interval, while the probabilities of a small portion of the sample (10%) are less than 1 out of 1 billion. This pilot study illustrates that some combinations of cranial variants are quite rare and may represent potential evidence to discern presumptive identifications, when an appropriate set of traits is selected and antemortem data are available for comparison. However, further research on larger and various samples is needed to confirm or discard the use of combinations of cranial non-metric traits as individualizing markers.

Objective This study presents evidence of a probable case of holoprosencephaly with cyclopia, which has been rarely reported in the paleopathological literature. Materials The skeletal remains of a male fetus between 36 and 40 gestational weeks from the Collezione Antropologica LABANOF (CAL) Milano Cemetery Skeletal Collection were studied. Methods The bones were macroscopically examined, and pathological anomalies were recorded and evaluated alongside paleopathological and clinical literature. Results Developmental anomalies were observed. In particular, a single orbit and optical canal were present, and the frontal, sphenoid and palatine bones were prematurely fused. These changes altered the normal morphology of the midline structures of the cranium and face. Conclusions The developmental anomalies observed are consistent with a case of holoprosencephaly associated with cyclopia. Significance Holoprosencephaly is a fatal congenital condition caused by the failure of the prosencephalon to separate in two halves. This condition is clinically well-known, with an estimated modern incidence of 1/16,000 births; however, the paleopathological literature lacks reports that would help anthropologists and paleopathologists interpret these anomalous signs on dry bone. This report documents a rare paleopathological case of the condition on a full-term fetus from a modern skeletal collection. Limitations Taphonomic and anthropic factors may have impaired the observation of all pathological features. Suggestions for further research Comparative studies with cases from documented collections could improve knowledge of the appearance of this condition on dry bones.

Non-powder guns in general, and especially pellet guns are acknowledged to cause important injuries, also on bone tissue. However, pellet gun-related injuries have been poorly analyzed in forensic literature and scientists may have no idea of what signs a pellet gun can leave on bone. Moreover, since such lesions are not commonly encountered in everyday forensic practice, they could be misdiagnosed. For this reason, the present study was performed to investigate and illustrate the qualitative effects of pellet guns on human bone. The estimation of the post-traumatic survival time (PTST) in case of bone injuries remains a tricky issue in the forensic field, especially when dealing with dry bones. Newer high-resolution imaging, and in particular microcomputed tomography (micro-CT), has the potential to significantly improve our abilities to interpret antemortem and perimortem lesions and accurately date fractures in a less destructive analysis. In this paper, nine costal fractures of known post-traumatic ages were analyzed through gross examination, conventional radiography, and microcomputed tomography, in order to test the potential of microcomputed tomography for dating fractures. As a result, microcomputed tomography provided images of high quality and definition and allowed the observation of the internal microarchitecture of the fractures and calluses. While microcomputed tomography cannot substitute histological examination for the estimation of the post-traumatic survival time, it constitutes a potent and helpful complementary tool for the analysis of bone trauma.

In literature, 3D-3D superimposition has been widely recognized as a valid method for personal identification. However, very little information is available about possible variability due to differences in protocols of registration of 3D models and calculation of RMS (root mean square) point-to-point distance. Frontal sinuses from 50 CT scans were segmented twice through the ITK-SNAP software and grouped in two samples (1 and 2). Maximum breadth, height and volume were measured. 3D models belonging to the same subject were then superimposed one on each other in 50 matches. In addition, superimposition of 50 random mismatches was performed. For each superimposition, the procedure was repeated four times choosing different reference models both for registration and calculation of RMS. It is commonly accepted that crime scene recovery and recording are key moments of any judicial inspection in which investigators must decide on the correct strategies to put into place. Complex outdoor scenarios, presenting partially or entirely skeletonised remains, can benefit more than others by the intervention of environmental specialists (forensic anthropologists, archaeologists, entomologists and botanists). These experts are capable of singling out, correctly recording and recovering environmental evidence that can lead to a more comprehensive reconstruction of a given criminal episode. If human remains are discovered in an outdoor scenario, the on-site presence of a botanist will guarantee a correct approach to the identification, recording and recovery of any botanical evidence. If an on-site botanist is not available, the operators must be capable of both the botanical evaluation of a scene and the implementation of correct botanical sampling protocols.The following collection of unusual case histories that aim at underlining the efficacy of forensic botany will examine the determination of post mortem or the post depositional interval, evidence for a victim’s post mortem transfer, evidence for the identification of a primary crime scene and evidence for the identification of a victim’s dismemberment site. In another two cases, one, we will illustrate the important role that forensic botany played in the discrimination between botanical material used to voluntarily conceal a victim and vegetation that had grown naturally above a disposal site, whereas the other will highlight the protocols implemented for the identification of a murder weapon.

In forensic contexts of advanced decomposition, when conventional matrices are no longer available for toxicological analyses, finding alternative matrices is necessary. The skeleton, which is fundamental for anthropologists and geneticists, could be useful also for toxicological purposes. The present study aims to examine what kind of information toxicological analysis performed on bones (the cranium and the ribs) in different states of preservation could provide to the forensic practitioner. Thirty cadavers with known pharmacological history, subjected to forensic autopsy at the Institute of Legal Medicine of Milan, were selected. Rib and cranium samples were collected from each body and separated into two parts in order to create two different states of preservation: One was cleaned from soft tissues and analyzed as a well-preserved bone sample; the other was submitted to a long maceration process, simulating complete skeletonization. All specimens were then processed with accelerated solvent extraction and the eluates analyzed using Q-Exactive™ Orbitrap™ Mass Spectrometer. The analysis of blood and skeletal matrices showed positive results for the tested substances in 63% of cases, mainly benzodiazepines, antidepressants, and drug abuse. Significant Pearson correlations were observed between non-macerated vs. macerated bone samples: r = 0.79 for rib samples, r = 0.61 for cranium samples, and r = 0.69 for all bone samples. As a consequence, the positive results confirm the potential of the bone tissue as an alternative matrix in forensic toxicology, even in cases of extremely decomposed bodies. This study also highlighted important elements for reconstructing the biological profile in cases of forensic anthropological concern.

Lateral angle (LA) of the internal acoustic canal (IAC) at its opening at the surface of the petrous portion of the temporal bone is known in literature as a dimorphic measurement useful for sex assessment. However, its reliability is still debated. Moreover, no information is available about the possible relationship between LA and shape and size of the IAC. Many studies in the literature have highlighted the utility of virtual 3D databanks as a substitute for real skeletal collections and the important application of radiological records in personal identification. However, none have investigated the accuracy of virtual material compared to skeletal remains in nonmetric variant analysis using 3D models. The present study investigates the accuracy of 20 computed tomography (CT) 3D reconstruction models compared to the real crania, focusing on the quality of the reproduction of the real crania and the possibility to detect 29 dental/cranial morphological variations in 3D images. An interobserver analysis was performed to evaluate trait identification, number, position, and shape. Results demonstrate a false bone loss in 3D models in some cranial regions, specifically the maxillary and occipital bones in 85% and 20% of the samples. Additional analyses revealed several difficulties in the detection of cranial nonmetric traits in 3D models, resulting in incorrect identification in circa 70% of the traits. In particular, pitfalls included the detection of erroneous position, error in presence/absence rates, in number, and in shape. The lowest percentages of correct evaluations were found in traits localized in the lateral side of the cranium and for the infraorbital suture, mastoid foramen, and crenulation. The present study highlights important pitfalls in CT scan when compared with the real crania for nonmetric analysis. This may have crucial consequences in cases where 3D databanks are used as a source of reference population data for nonmetric traits and pathologies and during bone-CT comparisons for identification purposes.

Better understanding of the timing of fracture healing may help in cases of interpersonal violence but also of personal identification. The intra- and inter-rater agreement for the adapted fracture healing scale (AFHS) assessing the post-traumatic time interval on radiographs were tested. This is a preliminary study, providing essential information on method reliability for upcoming studies using the AFHS. Five raters (two radiologists, a forensic pathologist, an orthopedist, and an anthropologist) were presented with a test in three parts consisting of 85 radiographs (from 30 adults) of fractures of tubular bones in different stages of healing purposefully selected from more than 1500 radiographs. The raters were firstly asked to assess 15 features describing fracture healing as present, absent, or not assessable. Thereafter, the raters were asked to choose from the AFHS a single-stage best representing the observed healing pattern. The intra- and inter-rater agreement were assessed using single-rating, absolute agreement, two-way mixed-effects intra-class correlation (ICC) coefficients. The intra-rater ICC of radiologist 1 ranged from 0.80 to 0.94. The radiologists' inter-rater ICC ranged from 0.68 to 0.74, while it ranged from -0.01 to 0.90 for the other raters. The good to excellent ICC among the radiologists and forensic anthropologist provides good foundation for the use of the AFHS in forensic cases of trauma dating. The poor to good results for the other physicians indicate that using the AFHS requires training in skeletal anatomy and radiology.

Background Illegal immigration to Europe is a well-known phenomenon whose numbers are being steadily increasing in recent years. Most of the immigrants in Italy come from war zones, and many of them submit an asylum application supported by the complaint to have been victims of persecutory acts in their home countries. Material and methods One hundred ninety-six medicolegal reports are analyzed considering the different country of origin, the type of the lesions claimed, tools used, evidenced effects, location of the perpetration of the physical abuses, and the possible motivation of the alleged torture. Results Greater than 80% of the assessed asylum seekers are over 18-year males coming from African countries. Fifty-eight percent of migrants were tortured or abused in countries of transit, 95% in Libya. Economic, familial, politic, and ethnic reasons prevail in some countries of origin, while tortures or abuses perpetrated in transit countries are mainly linked to forced labor and detention. In the 42.2% of cases, no physical evidence of tortures was detected. The Istanbul Protocol resulted to have been only partly applicable and about 40% of the medicolegal reports are “inconclusive” about the compatibility of physical evidence with the alleged tortures. Conclusions The medicolegal and forensic experts involved in torture and ill-treatment cases should seek specific education and training to lower the risks of underestimation and the rate of inconclusive reports. More extensive implementation of the Istanbul Protocol in daily practice should be pursued by the authorities in charge of asylum or protection releasement.

Older adults are subject to vulnerability and abusive behaviors have serious negative health consequences. Since the phenomenon is underestimated, several challenges are faced to prevent, diagnose, and treat abuses on older adults. In this context, clinical forensic medicine practitioners can play a pivotal role. A retrospective monocentric analysis of all the files concerning victims of violence observed in the SVSeD Center in Milan over the age of 65 for a five-year period was performed. For each medical report, data regarding the variables of the victims, the type of violence, and the variables of the perpetrators were analysed. Older adult victims of abuses were 166. Abuses against women were more frequent than against men (less than 6 % of consultations). In one third of cases, subjects also suffered from disabling diseases and reported signs of physical violence. Perpetrators were male known individuals in almost 90 % of cases. Violence was perpetrated by a partner or a family member. The present study may help in identifying risk factors for domestic violence against older adults. Consequently, preventive policies should be designed to interrupt the vicious circle of violence. Older adult abuse deserves additional focus and better education for healthcare professionals and further research should be carried out to better understand the actual epidemiology of the phenomenon and to develop therapeutical and caring strategies.

The lingula is a small bony projection emerging from the medial ridge of the mandibular foramen, subjected to morphological variations. To date, scientific literature has described four different shapes (truncated, triangular, nodular and assimilated) and the relative distributions in different human populations. However, no data are available on Europeans so far. To this purpose, the present study aims to evaluate the distribution of the lingula shapes in the Italian population and to verify its relevance in ancestry estimation. Lingula was analysed in 235 dry mandibles selected among contemporary Italian cemeterial skeletons. Since only well-preserved sides were considered, 453 sides were evaluated according to a classification method, which includes the description of a fifth shape (the bridge shape) and the presence of mixed morphologies. In our sample, the most prevalent shape was the truncated shape (38.6%), followed by the nodular (26.3%), mixed morphologies (15.2%), triangular (10.8%), bridge (5.1%) and assimilated (4.0%) shapes. Within mixed morphologies, the most prevalent were the nodular/truncated (31.9%), nodular/triangular (30.4%), and nodular/assimilated (23.2%). Differently to previous studies, the lingula morphology could not actually offer a concrete and reliable help to ancestry estimation. However, its shape and extension would assume a stronger clinical influence for the execution and success of the alveolar nerve block used in dental and maxillofacial surgery procedures.

Nowadays, the clinical forensic medical management of migration flows comprises the age assessment of unaccompanied minors. The process of age estimation is a fundamental pillar for legally ensuring the minors' rights and their protection needs. The procedure is complex and involves different phases and actors, from medical doctors to law enforcement officers. The present study aimed to investigate the performance of Greulich and Pyle, Demirjian, and Mincer methods when performed by raters both trained and without training. Also, the interrater reliability within groups of raters from different areas of expertise was evaluated. A total of 36 participants were enrolled for this study, divided in two groups according to their level of experience with age estimation methods. Each rater was asked to allocate stages and standards for age assessment, evaluating ten orthopantomograms and ten hand-wrist roentgenograms. The interrater reliability expressed through the Fleiss Kappa coefficient and the agreement with the reference standard were calculated. The results showed that none of the categories analyzed could reach a good interrater reliability (ĸ 0.8) for both methods. The study results highlighted variation and disagreement in the interpretation of the sample among raters and in the subsequent stages and standards allocation. In conclusion, the results of this study highlight that expertise does influence the reliability of the most utilized methods of age estimation of living individuals and stress the importance of proper training and practice, which could greatly increase the accuracy of age assessments.

The introduction of modern 3D image acquisition systems has enabled researchers to develop novel procedures for personal identification. The present study aimed to assess differences between dental scans belonging to the same or different subjects, through an innovative 3D-3D superimposition and registration method. Twelve subjects (6 males and 6 females) with pre- and post-orthodontic treatment dental casts were recruited. A 3D scan from each cast was obtained through a laser scanner and the 3D model of the upper first and second molar on the post-treatment cast was superimposed on the pre-treatment scan, for a total of 12 matches and 100 mismatches. Objective The aim of this article is to provide additional documentation of bone metastases to help anthropologists recognize the condition and potentially suggest the diagnosis of bladder carcinoma in differential diagnosis. Materials and methods Thirteen individuals clinically diagnosed with bladder carcinoma from the 20th century Milano Cemetery Skeletal Collection were macroscopically studied to document bone metastases in bladder cancer. Results Bone metastases were found through macroscopic observation in three individuals or 23% of the study sample. Metastases were mostly of a mixed nature (45%), although both osteoblastic (13%) and osteolytic (9%) also occurred. In particular, mixed and osteoblastic metastases exhibited different distribution patterns, even when affecting the same bones. The vertebrae (24.7%), skull (12.9%), ribs (11.7%), proximal humeri (7.8%), pelvis (5.2%), proximal femora (2.6%), sacrum (1.3%) and sternum (1.3%) were the most commonly affected. Osteolytic lesions included coalescing superficial pits or lesions perforating the bone cortex. Proliferative lesions manifested as spongiosclerosis or periosteal new bone. Mixed metastases were osteolytic lesions exposing a thickened trabecular bone or coalescent porosity with reactive new bone. Conclusions Bladder carcinoma metastases were mostly mixed, exhibiting periosteal reactions, perforations of bone cortex, spongiosclerosis and coalescing porosity. Significance Bladder carcinoma is rarely considered in the differential diagnosis of the primary organ. This study reports the macroscopic aspect of bone metastases in bladder carcinoma and may help anthropologists diagnose the condition in skeletons. Limitations Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence; some lesions may have been hidden from macroscopic observation and therefore missed. Further research Radiographic analysis and comparison with other neoplasms should provide additional details for the diagnosis of bladder cancer bone metastases.

Breast carcinoma is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in women. The study of bone pathologies presents considerable potential in anthropology, paleopathology, forensic science and medicine. In this paper, we present and discuss metastatic lesions found in the skeletons of known individuals from the CAL Milano Cemetery Skeletal Collection, clinically diagnosed with breast cancer during life. Fourteen skeletons from a contemporary and identified collection were macroscopically studied and metastases were identified by comparison with clinical literature. As a result, bone metastases were observed in 43% of the study sample. They were located most commonly on the ribs (28.1%), pelvic girdle (19.8%), vertebrae (15.6%), skull (15.6%), scapulae (10.2%) as well as proximal segment of the femora (8.4%) and humeri (2.4%) respectively, favoring sites of high vascularization. The majority of the lesions were osteolytic, although osteoblastic and mixed metastases did occur. Osteolytic metastases appear as coalescent porosity or round to oval perforating lesions on bones with denticulated margins and pitted surrounding bone, whereas osteoblastic metastases thickened the existing trabecula (spongiosclerosis). Mixed metastases were perforating lytic lesions exposing the osteoblastic activity in the underlying trabecular bone. These results, consistent with the data from the literature, strengthen the diagnostic criteria for metastases and illustrate the aspect of bone metastases in breast carcinoma.

Building the biological profile of a deceased person represents a pivotal step in order to achieve the victim's identification. Specifically with regard to ancestry, the melanin distribution pattern in the dermal-epidermal layers has been poorly explored in the forensic field as a potential useful tool. In particular, nothing has been reported about the reliability of such method in bodies in active decay or in advanced state of decomposition. In this study fragments of skin sampled from bodies of known ancestry, both in good and in poor states of preservation, were subjected to histological analysis. We selected 15 subjects, which were divided into three groups: group A (5 white Europeans), group B (5 black Africans) and group C (5 Orientals). A double skin sample was performed on all the bodies, one from the abdomen and the other one from the right forearm. After histological processing and staining with hematoxylin and eosin (HE) and Masson-Hamperl trichrome technique, the cutaneous melanin distribution pattern was assessed using a semi-quantitative score. The melanin distribution patterns observed both in fresh and in putrefied cadaveric skin were found to be in all cases consistent with the victims' known ancestry. Moreover no differences were observed between abdominal and forearm skin samples and all the histological findings highlighted by HE were confirmed by the Masson-Hamperl trichrome staining. We demonstrated that the histological analysis aimed at assessing the melanin distribution pattern may be a valuable useful tool in the assessment of ancestry.

Personal identification of the living from video surveillance systems usually involves 2D images. However, the potentiality of three-dimensional facial models in gaining personal identification through 3D-3D comparison still needs to be verified. This study aims at testing the reliability of a protocol for 3D-3D registration of facial models, potentially useful for personal identification. Fifty male subjects aged between 18 and 45 years were randomly chosen from a database of 3D facial models acquired through stereophotogrammetry. For each subject, two acquisitions were available; the 3D models of faces were then registered onto other models belonging to the same and different individuals according to the least point-to-point distance on the entire facial surface, for a total of 50 matches and 50 mismatches. RMS value (root mean square) of point-to-point distance between the two models was then calculated through the VAM® software. Violence perpetrated on male victims is a phenomenon that is currently underestimated by both national and international scientific communities, since males are historically (and stereotypically) considered the perpetrators rather than the victims of violence. As a consequence, the available literature lacks data which would allow a better understanding of this issue and its presenting features. We undertook a retrospective analysis of 231 medical files of male victims of violence over a five-year-period (2014–2018) at the Soccorso Violenza Sessuale e Domestica Centre in Milan, Italy. The sample included 112 victims of sexual violence and 119 victims of domestic violence, most of whom were younger than 18 years of age. The main aim of this study was to describe the presentations of male victims of violence in order to understand the phenomenon better, increase awareness of the issue and enable improved health-care management. The need to pay more attention to this vulnerable part of the population is mandatory in health-care services, and it includes: the provision of management guidelines, training to attending physicians and a supportive service to male survivors. Understanding which risk factors are related to male abuse can help with the development of programmes that identify, prevent and minimise violence – this being especially useful for primary-care clinicians. This is the first Italian study to deal with domestic and sexual violence involving male victims.

The aim of this article was to conduct a rapid critical review of the literature about the relationship between violence against women (VAW) and the current COVID-19 pandemic. After the screening process, a total of 42 articles were considered. Our review confirmed that the "stay at home" policies to contrast the pandemic have increased the problem of VAW, creating a "shadow pandemic within the pandemic", as it was called by the United Nations. However, rigorous studies estimating the relationship between VAW and COVID-19 pandemic are scarce; most of the articles are commentaries, letters, editorials, and most of the published data derives from social media, internet, anecdotal evidence and helplines reports. Health care systems should promote further investigations into the relation between VAW and COVID-19, to identify creative solutions to provide clinical care and forensic services for victims of VAW.

only between 2014 and 2017 the European Migration Network (EMN) recorded 268,348 unaccompanied minors entering Europe1, hence in the past years the European Union has intervened in order to guarantee special protective measures for minors. Yet only a few weeks ago news concerning incidents in Greece have once again drawn attention to the need to protect migrant children2. Particularly when dealing with adolescents, protection derives, for those without documents, from properly ascertaining that they are minors. Adequate verification of age is therefore fundamental, yet in Europe it is still badly managed. Italy is a perfect example of such mismanagement, but not the only one. Our country is one of the main doors to Western Europe and on May 6th 2017, the Italian Parliament enacted the “Provision on protective measures for unaccompanied foreign minors”, known as the “Zampa law” (n°47/17), which aims at guaranteeing the protection of unaccompanied minors. However, as reflected in the whole of Europe, within the lines of this law, the paradox of the lacking, restricted and somewhat maligned role of medical and forensic sciences in age assessment emerges, which is dangerously leading to a sloppy administration of the rights of minors. Proof of this is the amount of resources spent in appeals which follow inadequate aging procedures which in turn can lead to minors being judged as adults (the most alarming risk since what is most at heart is the protection of true minors), or to judging adults as minors, leading to an excessive burden on administrations which can severely challenge the system in the long run. According to principles of medical ethics and human rights assessed in the practical guide recommended by the European Asylum Support Office (EASO) as well as other sources, the age assessment procedure, when necessary, recommends that a multidisciplinary holistic approach be applied. This approach involves an interview with a social worker, a neuropsychiatric or psychological evaluation, and a pediatric auxological examination, (all in this order), preferably performed together with an intercultural-linguistics mediator; medical procedures should come last, favour those methods that are less intrusive for the minor leaving the most invasive ones (including radiological examination) as a last resort (though one wonders which reliable medical age assessment for this purpose is at the moment non radiological). Here the double paradox emerges: first that of the secondary role of medical evaluation, then that of the omitted role of forensics. Age assessments by psychosocial tests and non-medical methods can measure behavior and cognitive ability but they are highly influenced by environmental and cultural factors. Furthermore child and adolescent interviews and psychological evaluations do not provide any validated margin of error (let alone referred to specific ethnic groups) as requested by most administrative or judicial agencies, and the assessment of mental maturity is very difficult in individuals who have little or no education, come from different cultural backgrounds and who may have experienced trauma. On the other hand, medical radiological methods (which are far less invasive than usually proclaimed8) have fairly large error ranges but these are better known and quantifiable than those of psychosocial assessments.9 Hence it is unreasonable and counterproductive to proceed to verify age in adolescents without medical and radiological tests. Furthermore, one wonders why the world of forensic experts is frequently left aside in guidelines and laws, since these are the scientists best trained to discuss “error ranges” in administrative and judicial (not “only - clinical”) scenarios. Age assessment based on dental and/or skeletal maturity has since decades been the object of research by forensic experts. In the last years several forensic groups and societies10 have dealt with this issue and provided a plethora of publications relating to this topic as well as appropriate scientific methodology with which to present the strength of evidence. It is our opinion that the recommended holistic approach in the age estimation process must always include, when dealing with minors (particularly post pubertal minors) with no valid documents, medical and radiological evaluation, and that it cannot be considered multidisciplinary and complete without the involvement of forensic expertise.

Bone taphonomy is a widely investigated topic; however, few data are available concerning marine bone taphonomy, especially on remains recovered from great depths and with short post-mortem intervals. To date, few studies have evaluated the bony changes which occur in seawater compared to samples with different post-mortem histories, and none through a comparative analysis of different approaches. To this purpose, this pilot study aims to examine the influence of seawater on bone preservation compared to other depositional contexts by multiple perspectives. Forty-nine human bone samples (femurs or tibiae) recovered from different environments (sea water, fresh water, outdoor, burial in coffin) were compared by macroscopic, microscopic and bone densitometric approaches. In order to investigate organic and inorganic components, undecalcified and decalcified histology of thin sections was performed. The analyses revealed a well-preserved bone tissue both macroscopically (92%) and microscopically (97% and 95% for undecalcified and decalcified sections). No significant differences were detected from radiological densitometric investigations (BMD = 1.6 g/cm2 ± 0.1), except between old and young individuals (p value < 0.001). Differences were observed for body decomposition and few scavenged samples (3/15). However, even if slight variations were observed, no relation was recorded with the depositional contexts. We found a similar bone preservation in the four environments at the time of recovery, both macroscopically and microscopically, but also with radiological densitometric investigations. Our observations enriched the literature on bone taphonomy, providing data on bone tissue preservation in the early post-mortem period from a multidisciplinary perspective, paving the way for further studies on the topic.

Partially or totally skeletonized bodies are undoubtedly the most challenging scenario to deal with for forensic pathologists and anthropologists. Indeed, in such cases, being able to figure out the cause and manner of death is often tricky. Human remains require to be washed and cleaned before a thorough assessment of any signs of trauma. However, bones and any fragment of more or less putrefied soft tissues may be home to crucial traces for investigative purposes. They are often located in the context of apparently meaningless dirt and, sometimes they are even invisible to the naked eye. Therefore, their careless cleaning inevitably leads to an unintentional loss of such traces with a negative impact on subsequent investigations. For these reasons before proceeding with cleaning, exhaustive examination and sampling must be carried out. In particular fragments of soft tissues, even if putrefied, are absolutely not to be considered as a hindrance for forensic purposes, since they could still provide valuable information after histological examination. Finally, forward-thinking professionals should think about the possible presence of exogenous micro-traces of forensic concern and collect specimens to be analyzed through in-depth analyses, such as Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (SEM/EDX). The present series of cases demonstrates that crucial forensic information can be obtained through the analysis of apparently meaningless residues and even of micro-traces not visible to the naked eye and mixed with trivial dirt.

In forensic anthropology, many small biological non-osseous materials may be found associated to skeletonized remains and can provide crucial information to the biological profile. Indeed, their careful recovery and correct identification can add information related to age-at-death, sex, ancestry, health, diet, migration and habits, and may be used in specific analysis such as DNA typing. However, and despite their potential, little is known about these non-osteological materials. Indeed, how frequent are they in dry bone cases? To answer this question, 100 skeletal remains with postmortem intervals ranging from 23 to 76 years from the CAL Milano Cemetery Skeletal Collection were meticulously examined for the presence of non-skeletal materials and in particular ossified cartilage, vascular calcifications, hair and nails. As a result, non-skeletal materials were found in 81 skeletal remains and showed high frequencies of recovery, despite the less-than-optimal conditions of exhumation of the skeletons. The high frequencies of non-skeletal materials obtained demonstrate the need for additional training and research given their informative power in forensic cases.

This commentary aims to provide a multidisciplinary framework on intimate partner violence (IPV) during the COVID-19 pandemic (with a specific focus on the most predominant form of gender-based violence, i.e., male violence towards women), commenting on the multiple negative consequences of the pandemic on gender violence and providing elements of effective practice. We searched literature for reports/studies on the issue of IPV during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on health, psychological, forensic, and legal aspects. The combined effects of lockdowns, isolation at home with abusive partners, quarantine, and economic worries/loss of a job could significantly facilitate violence against women and, at the same time, diminish women’s chances to seek for help, with a strong negative impact on their life. The continued offer of clinical, psychological, forensic, and legal services for survivors of violence, despite the modifications to the provision of these services due to the new needs related to the COVID-19 pandemic, appears of utmost importance. All actions to support survivors of IPV are expected to be multidisciplinary, including the involvement of social and/or legal services and health systems, and woman-centred. Implementing these measures in the COVID-19 era appears challenging but is of primary importance.

The crisis concerning the identification of dead migrants is forcing forensic scientists to deal with the unavailability of classical antemortem (AM) data such as radiological information and DNA. However many times there is abundant AM photographic data of which the availability and quality is underestimated. Independently of when facial image comparison can be used as a valid identification method, description of the unexpected quality and quantity of images in the scenario of unidentified migrant decedents is given in this observational study. It focuses on the overall characteristics of the AM images available for a group of 74 missing migrants related to the disaster of October 3rd, 2013. 394 images were collected: an average of 6 for each missing person. 18% are original pictures, 47.5% scans of original images, 9.9% scans of printed images while 9.4% downloaded from social networks such as Facebook. 42.7% of images resulted in focus. Among all the images, about the 10% has been used in the personal identification process to ascertain the identity of 22 persons, because of the visibility of identifying details (facial, dental and body features). The importance of such a finding should not be diminished by its simplicity. Today, those involved in collecting AM information from relatives of dead migrants are underestimating the possible presence of images, even in sub-Saharan populations, where, contrary to belief and data, technology, though simple, is available and images may turn out to be abundant and useful (and at times the only resort) for identification.

When dealing with complex crimes such as rape and assault, every trace takes on an essential role. The hands are often the only means of defence and offence for the victim as well as a frequent area of contact with the environment; fingernails of a victim are a well-known possible source of DNA of the aggressor; nevertheless, they are more rarely treated as an area of interest for non-genetic material, particularly on living victims. The hyponychium, because of its physiological protective function, lends itself ideally to retaining different kinds of traces representative of an environment or various products and substrates that could shed light on the environment and objects involved in the event. We therefore tested how far this capability of the hyponychium could go by simulating the dynamics of contamination of the nail through scratching on different substrates (brick and mortar, painted wood, ivy leaves, cotton and woollen fabric, soil) and persistence of any contaminant at different time intervals. We have thus shown how these traces may remain in the living for up to 24 h after the event using inexpensive and non-destructive techniques such as the episcopic and optical microscope.

The identification of decedents has always been a central issue in forensic pathology, for ethical, criminal, and administrative reasons, but today, it needs more attention due to issues related not only to migration but also to the weakening of family ties. This article presents a descriptive study discussing the Italian regulatory situation developed in the last decade to face the many identification issues, with all its improvements and flaws. Hence, data gathered in 25 years of at the Institute of Legal Medicine of Milan and the epidemiology of unidentified decedents are illustrated. Briefly, from 1995 to 2019, the number of unidentified human remains with no identity or requesting verification of identity amounts to 726, i.e., 3% circa of all autopsies performed at the Institute, with an average of 29 individuals per year. In total, 528 (72.7%) individuals were successfully identified, 100 (13.8%) remained without an identity, and 98 (13.5%) individuals remained with suspected yet unconfirmed identities. Percentages for each identification technique are displayed, with insight into the role of forensic anthropology and odontology compared to genetics, and into the misuse of non-scientific methods allowed by Public Prosecutors. All the data is compared, as much as possible, with the very few recent studies concerning the problem worldwide. Finally, the article aims to show the Italian experience in dealing with unidentified bodies, in order to provide food for thought for other countries toward a discussion regarding a global issue which is sometimes taken for granted and underestimated.

Intimate partner violence (IPV)-defined as physical, psychological, sexual, and/or economic violence typically experienced by women at home and perpetrated by their partners or expartners-is a pervasive form of violence that destroys women's feelings of love, trust, and self-esteem, with important negative consequences on physical and psychological health. Many reports from several countries have underlined a remarkable increase in the cases of IPV during the COVID-19 emergency. In this opinion article, we discussed the hypothesis that such an increase may be related to the restrictive measures enacted to contain the pandemic, including women's forced cohabitation with the abusive partner, as well as the exacerbation of partners' pre-existing psychological disorders during the lockdown. In addition, we retrospectively analyzed some data derived from our practice in a public Italian referral center for sexual and domestic violence (Service for Sexual and Domestic Violence [SVSeD]). These data interestingly revealed an opposite trend, that is, a decrease in the number of women who sought assistance since the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak. Such a reduction should be interpreted as a negative consequence of the pandemic-related restrictive measures. Although necessary, these measures reduced women's possibilities of seeking help from antiviolence centers and/or emergency services. Owing to the COVID-19 outbreak, there is an urgent need for developing and implementing alternative treatment options for IPV victims (such as online and phone counseling and telemedicine), as well as training programs for health care professionals, especially those employed in emergency departments, to facilitate early detection of IPV.

In this position statement, the Board members of the Forensic Anthropology Society of Europe (FASE) argue that forensic anthropology methods can be used as means of personal identification, particularly in situations with limited availability of traditional identification methods (i.e. dactyloscopy, odontology, and molecular genetic analysis). This statement has been issued taking into account the international migration crises related to thousands of deaths worldwide, in which the utility of these traditional means of identification has been sporadic to non-existent. The statement is however not limited to deaths related to the migration crises, as similar problems may occur in fatalities en masse such as in natural disasters and armed conflicts, and on a smaller scale in cases of homeless or otherwise socioeconomically disadvantaged persons. The number of reports on personal identification based on sound anthropological methodology is increasing in the scientific literature. However, more research is needed to develop evidence-based standard operating procedures and statistical frameworks. Age estimation of living individuals has become a crucial part of the forensic practice, especially due to the global increase in cross-border migration. The low rate of birth registration in many countries, hence of identification documents of migrants, especially in Africa and Asia, highlights the importance of reliable methods for age estimation of living individuals. Despite the fact that a number of skeletal and dental methods for age estimation have been developed, their main limitation is that they are based on specific reference samples and there is still no consensus among researchers on whether these methods can be applied to all populations. Though this issue remains still unsolved, population information at a glance could be useful for forensic practitioners dealing with such issues. This study aims at presenting a scoping review and mapping of the current situation concerning population data for skeletal (hand-wrist and clavicle) and dental methods (teeth eruption and third molar formation) for age estimation in the living. Two hundred studies on the rate of skeletal maturation and four hundred thirty-nine on the rate of dental maturation were found, covering the period from 1952 and 2020 for a total of ninety-eight countries. For most of the western and central African countries there are currently no data on the rate of skeletal and dental maturation. The same applies to the countries of the Middle East, as well as the eastern European countries, especially as regard the skeletal development.

Study Objective To explore whether there are differences in characteristics, clinical findings and management in cases of sexual violence in adolescent and adult women. Design Retrospective study. Setting SVSeD–Service for Sexual and Domestic Violence, Fondazione IRCCS Ca’ Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico, Milan, Italy. Participants Female victims of sexual violence aged 10 years and older. Two study groups were analysed: an adolescent group and an adult group. Interventions None; this was an observational study. Main Outcome Measures Characteristics of the perpetrator, time spent between the episode of sexual violence and the access to SVSeD, presence of genital and/or extragenital injuries; tests for sexually transmitted diseases, spermatozoa research; and toxicological screening; Results Adolescent victims of sexual violence requested help later than the adult victims. The majority of the perpetrators were well known to the victims in both groups. In both groups, we observed genital injuries in 1 of 3 patients. We found a strong association between the presence of genital injuries and a positive screening test for sexually transmitted diseases, in particular with regard to the adolescent victims. Conclusion Adolescents’ delayed disclosure of sexual violence may affect the ability to properly manage these crimes. Prevention programs and public awareness campaigns should be implemented to highlight the importance of a prompt disclosure after sexual assault has occurred. Gynecologists should be made increasingly aware of this delicate issue, to better assist victims of sexual violence, especially adolescent victims.

Italy was hit hard by the World Wars, still today the discovery of human remains dating back to 20th century is a common phenomenon, in particular on Alpine glaciers, due to climate changes. The authors will describe the Italian scenario in terms of legislation, scientific procedures and related disciplines involved, then the difficulties in the identification of human remains of soldiers, but also potential issues related to uncontrolled “scavenging” activities and consequent ethical aspects. The interdisciplinarity, used as systematic approach to deal with complex cases, allowed the presumptive identification of a WWI soldier recovered after one century from the glaciers of the Adamello mountain, as described. Putting aside the national perspective, the authors endorse and encourage the establishment of an international working group in order to share common issues, to exchange experience and to build global best-practices.

In forensic anthropology, correct identification of human deciduous teeth is of paramount importance for age-at-death estimation and relies on detailed anatomical descriptions. Yet literature is scarce on indications: details on the morphology of molar tooth germs of fetuses and newborns, developing from multiple mineralized centers that will eventually coalesce, are scant. This paper presents new anatomical elements for practitioners to identify human molar tooth germs at early developmental stages. 126 deciduous molars from 22 modern skeletons of fetuses and newborns (with a known age-at-death ranging between 0 days and 2 months and 21 days postnatal), without reported or observed dental pathological signs, were selected from the Collezione Antropologica LABANOF (CAL) documented skeletal collection. Gross anatomical descriptions of the morphology and configuration of the centers were provided, considering the number of mineralized centers, the shape and the outline of the occlusal plane at different stages. Three different developmental stages were observed in the maxillary first and second molar and the mandibular first molar, whereas in the mandibular second molar four stages were observed. For each stage, we provide additional detailed morphological descriptions, sketches outlining the shape of the tooth germ, and a picture of the tooth; also, indications for siding the teeth are presented. This information can be used by forensic anthropologists and odontologists for a proper identification when tooth germs are not found in anatomical connection within the dental sockets. Further analyses that encompass more age groups on a larger sample would allow to map the entire crown development of deciduous molars.

In decomposed or skeletonized bodies, conventional matrices used in forensic toxicology may no longer be available for analysis. The aim of this paper was to test the survival and detection of toxicological substances in dry bone samples with over 23 years of post-mortem interval. In this perspective, bone samples from the cranium, ribs, and vertebrae of seven skeletons from the CAL Milano Cemetery Skeletal Collection, buried for over 23 years, fully decomposed and altered by taphonomic factors were selected based on their ante-mortem data, which included verified or suspected drug addictions or overdose. Qualitative and quantitative analyses were performed with Dionex™ ASE™ 350 Accelerated Solvent Extractor and Q-Exactive Orbitrap-mass spectrometry with a HPLC system. Positive results were obtained in six of the seven cases, and different psychoactive drugs (and in some cases their active metabolites) were detected, including analgesic (two opioids: methadone and buprenorphine) and anxiolytic drugs (benzodiazepines, in particular delorazepam, diazepam, nordiazepam, and lorazepam), a cannabinoid metabolite (THCCOOH) as well as metabolites of stimulants (benzoylecgonine and MDA). Consequently, this research shows that toxicological substances may be found in bone tissue after over 23 years of post-mortem interval.

The correct interpretation of skin lesions is a crucial issue in forensic medicine. Many macroscopic and microscopic vital reaction markers and molecules have been studied in the past years in order to estimate the timing of injuries. However, literature lacks information regarding how to perform sampling to obtain a more reliable and accurate response. The present study investigates 25 bruises and analyses the different histological asset in different areas (central or marginal) and the different layers (epidermis, dermis, hypodermis and muscle) of the wound. All wounds were sampled in several areas and analysed under a 200× magnification optical microscope, simply counting the degree of haemorrhaging (i.e hematic infiltration) visible in each optical field (0 = 0%–5%; 1 = 6%–25%; 2 = 26%–50%; 3 = 51%–75%; 4 = 76%–100%). All the injuries presented some kind of infiltration in at least one area, nonetheless only 56% of the wounds were infiltrated in the entirety of the areas. Finally, in 28% the dermal layer did not show any trace of infiltration. Therefore, considering such results it seems that depth or area of sampling of a bruise may largely influence the evaluation of vitality and hence of age of a wound. Though this may seem intuitive, no studies have examined this issue in depth.

Plant science has been more and more utilized in forensic investigation, although its full potential is still to be reached. Plant macroremains are a powerful tool to link a body or other evidence back to a primary crime scene as they can provide detailed information about its previous ecological and geographic location. However, plant macroremains are often poorly preserved and difficult to identify, as diagnostic elements are seldom present within the assemblage occurring on the scene. Plant fragments most likely to be found are those exposed to the environment and resistant to degradation. The bark of woody plants meets these requirements but the possibility of its identification at species level from small fragments is not known. Starting from a real homicide case, where bark splinters were found on the victim, we aimed to assess the forensic potential of bark identification from small fragments like those likely to occur on a crime scene. Two identification keys were prepared for 16 common lowland tree species from Northern Italy; one key used all the available anatomical traits, the second only those from the outer bark. The second key was not able to discriminate some couples of species unambiguously, but could identify the bark fragments of the homicide as Robinia pseudoacacia, as confirmed from direct comparison with a reference sample. Bark fragments deserve to be included into the macroremains to be analyzed during an investigation, but small samples could easily lack diagnostic traits, and the building of a reference collection should be encouraged.

There are several metric and morphological methods available for sex estimation of skeletal remains, but their reliability and applicability depend on the sexual dimorphism of the remains as well as on the availability of preserved bones. Some studies showed that age-related changes on bones can cause misclassification of sex. The purpose of this study was to establish the reliability of pelvic morphological traits and metric methods of sex estimation on relatively old individuals from a modern Italian skeletal collection. The data for this study were obtained from 164 individuals of the Milano CAL skeletal collection and average age of the samples was 75years. In the pelvic morphological method, the recalibrated regression formula of Klales and colleagues (2012), pre-auricular sulcus, and greater sciatic notch morphology were used for sex estimation. With regard to the metric method, 15 standard measurements from upper and lower limbs were analyzed for sexual dimorphism. The results showed that in pelvic morphological approach, the application of regression formula of the revised Klales and colleague formula (2017) resulted in 100% accuracy. Classification rates of metric methods vary from 75.19 to 90.73% with the maximum epiphyseal breadth of proximal tibia representing the most discriminant parameter. This study confirms that the effect of age on sex estimation methods is not substantial, and both metric and morphological methods of sex estimation can be reliably applied to individuals of Italian descent in middle and late adulthood.

Laser scanner devices are acquiring a growing importance in facial anatomy. Most studies have analysed facial scans obtained through two simultaneous captures, whereas the same result can be obtained by consecutive three-dimensional (3D) scans. However, this latter procedure has not yet been validated. Fourteen volunteers underwent face image capture through stereophotogrammetry (VECTRA M3) and three consecutive facial scans through a laser scanner (Konica Minolta Vi910). The concordance between 14 linear distances, 12 angles, facial surface area and volume measurements was verified by the Bland–Altman test and calculation of absolute and relative technical errors of measurement (TEM/rTEM). The two facial images obtained by the different devices were then registered to calculate point-to-point distance. Most of linear distances and angles showed a high agreement, with “very good” or “good” rTEMs, ranging between 1.1% and 6.4%. Surface area measurements agreed well between the devices (rTEM: 6.3%), while volumes were poorly comparable (rTEM: 25.8%); the root mean square point-to-point distance was 0.80 mm (SD: 0.41). This study first tested the concordance of measurements on facial images obtained by stereophotogrammetry and consecutive laser scans. Results highlight the reliability of linear distances, angles and surface areas measurements, but discourage volume assessment and registration of surfaces acquired through different devices.

Anatomical uniqueness plays a significant role in the personal identification process of unknown deceased. Frontal sinuses have been widely used in the past decades for this purpose, mostly using 2D X-ray techniques. However, the modern 3D CT-based segmentation methods may help in developing novel and more reliable methods of identification. This study aims at assessing the anatomical uniqueness of frontal sinuses through the 3D model registration. Thirty subjects who underwent two maxillofacial CT scans (interval: 1 month to 5 years) were selected from a hospital database. Frontal sinuses were automatically segmented through ITK-SNAP open source software and the 3D models belonging to the same patient were automatically superimposed according to the least point-to-point difference between the two surfaces. Two hundred patients were randomly selected from the same database and undergo the same procedure to perform 200 superimpositions of frontal sinuses belonging to different individuals, equally divided between males and females (mismatches). Accurate dating of bone fractures can be crucial in the context of forensic trauma analysis since it may provide essential information for the corroboration or contradiction of statements by victims or suspects in cases of domestic abuse or torture. The different stages of bone healing have been well described in the existing literature, and some previous studies attempted to define related timelines particularly in the paediatric population. However, the bone healing process can be very variable and despite the importance of the topic in the forensic field, so far little is known about the radiological appearance of bone fractures at different healing stages, and how this correlates with time, especially in an adult population. The aim of this retrospective observational study was to describe the temporal aspect of pre-defined healing stages as they appear on radiographs of tubular bone fractures in adults, and explore the effect of potential cofounding variables. A dynamic nomogram was developed as a user-friendly tool to be eventually applied in clinical or medico-legal settings. This study showed that the posttraumatic time interval (PTTI) increased progressively with the pre-defined healing stages. However, confounding factors, such as patients' age, sex, and location of the fracture need to be accounted for in the final estimation model. Further studies are needed to explore more potentially confounding variables to refine the presented outcomes. Better knowledge of the effect of different confounding variables in the dating of fracture healing will contribute to greater accuracy of PTTI estimation of bone fractures in adults.

Asylum seekers and refugees are constantly increasing worldwide because of human rights' violations and political-related abuses. As a result, some of them show scars due to torture and other forms of maltreatments. In addition, they may also present scars due to ethnical practices, namely ritual scarifications. This case study presents a victim who did not give consent to perform such ethnical practices on her body. The authors aim to enlighten the difficulty to understand the origin and the purpose of these specific injuries and the importance to know how to distinguish them from other forms of abuse. Indeed, it appears that such lesions follow a cultural path, meaning that the lesions are performed methodically and may show macroscopic differences compared to others. The story narrated by the victim can be helpful for the experts' assessment, regardless, they may present memory-loss issues. This represents the value of a correct injuries' diagnosis and the importance of cultural anthropology-related analyses. The cultural and social background are relevant since the injuries have their own signification because of their symbolism. Therefore, a multidisciplinary approach with a cultural anthropologist may have the possibility to help the forensic experts in understanding and interpreting such stories fostering their ability to better assess asylum seekers stories and their reliability.
