During the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, otolaryngology has been shown to be a high-risk specialty due to the exposure to aerosol-generating physical examinations, procedures and surgical interventions on the head and neck area, both in adult and paediatric patients. This has prompted the issue of updating the guidelines by International Health Authorities in the Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) field and, at the same time, has stimulated engineers and healthcare professionals to develop new devices and technologies with the aim of reducing the risk of contamination for physicians, nurses and patients.A review of the literature published on PubMed, Ovid/Medline and Scopus databases was performed from January 01, 2020 to December 31, 2021.73 articles were eligible to be included, which were subdivided into 4 categories: ("Artificial Intelligence (AI)"; "Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)"; "Diagnostic tools"; "Surgical tools").All of the innovations that have been developed during the COVID-19 pandemic have laid the foundation for a radical technological change of society, not only in medicine but also from a social, political and economical points of view that will leave its mark in the coming decades.Innovazioni diagnostiche e chirurgiche in otorinolaringoiatria per i pazienti adulti e pediatrici durante l’era COVID-19.Durante la pandemia da COVID-19, l’otorinolaringoiatria ha dimostrato di essere una delle specialità a più alto rischio di contatto con le malattie virali a trasmissione aerea, a causa dell’esposizione a procedure generanti aerosol sul distretto testa-collo, sia sul paziente adulto che pediatrico. Background Vaccine hesitancy is a global problem, carrying significant health risks for extremely vulnerable population as that of preterm infants. Social media are emerging as significant tools for public health promotion. Our aim was to evaluate both the coverage and the timeliness of routine immunizations in a cohort of preterm infants (< 33 weeks of gestational age) at 24 months of age whose families have been subjected to in-hospital and web-based interventions to counteract vaccine hesitancy. Methods For a period of 2 years parents of preterm infants were instructed during their follow up visits by a member of the NICU team to get correct informations about vaccines from a social network page. Vaccination rates of preterm infants were assessed at 24 months of chronological age with an electronic database and compared to both general population and historical cohort. Results Coverage and timeliness of vaccinations at 24 months of age of 170 preterm infants were analyzed in December 2019. Gestational age and birth weight median (IQR) were, respectively, 31.0 (5.0) weeks and 1475.0 (843.8) g. Coverage rates were similar to those of the regional population (p > 0.05), while timeliness of administration was significantly delayed compared to the recommended schedule (p p > 0.05). DTaP-IPV-HBV-Hib 2nd and 3rd doses, MMR and Varicella vaccines coverage data were higher compared to historical cohort (p Conclusion Increasing vaccine confidence through web-based interventions could have a positive impact on vaccination acceptance of parents of preterm infants, although timeliness results still delayed. There is a strong need to develop different and effective vaccination strategies to protect this very vulnerable population.

In recent years, social media has become part of our lives, even among children. From the beginning of COVID-19 pandemic period, media device and Internet access rapidly increased. Adolescents connected Internet alone, consulting social media, mostly Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. During “lockdown”, the Internet usage allowed communication with peers and the continuity activities such as school teaching. However, we have to keep in mind that media usage may be related to some adverse consequences especially in the most vulnerable people, such as the young. Aim of the review is to focus on risks correlated to social media use by children and adolescents, identifying spies of rising problems and engaging in preventive recommendations. The scoping review was performed according to PRISMA guidelines, searching on PubMed the terms “social media” or “social network”, “health”, and “pediatrics”. Excluding articles not pertinent, we found 68 reports. Out of them, 19 were dealing with depression, 15 with diet, and 15 with psychological problems, which appeared to be the most reported risk of social media use. Other identified associated problems were sleep, addiction, anxiety, sex related issues, behavioral problems, body image, physical activity, online grooming, sight, headache, and dental caries. Public and medical awareness must rise over this topic and new prevention measures must be found, starting with health practitioners, caregivers, and websites/application developers. Pediatricians should be aware of the risks associated to a problematic social media use for the young’s health and identify sentinel signs in children as well as prevent negative outcomes in accordance with the family.

Aims To investigate if extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) or palm oil enriched chocolate spreads consumption leads to different results in terms of plasma ceramides concentration, glucose and lipid metabolism, inflammatory markers and appetite regulation in young healthy subjects. Methods In a 2-week, double-blind, cross-over, randomized controlled trial, 20 healthy, normal-weight subjects with a mean age of 24.2 years(SD: 1.2), consumed chocolate spread snacks (73% of energy [%E] from fat, 20% from carbohydrates and 7% from proteins), providing 570 Kcal/day added to an isocaloric diet. The chocolate spreads were identical, except for the type of fat: EVOO oil, rich in monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), or palm oil, rich in Saturated Fatty Acids(SFAs). Results EVOO-enriched chocolate spread consumption led to better circulating sphingolipids and glucose profile, with reduced plasma ceramide C16:0, ceramide C16:0/ceramide C22:0-ceramide C24:0 ratio and sphingomyelin C18:0 (P=0.030, P=0.032 and P=0.042, respectively) compared to the palm oil-enriched chocolate spread diet. HOMA-IR and plasma insulin were lower, while the Quicki and the McAuley Index were higher after the EVOO diet compared to the palm oil diet (P= 0.046, P=0.045, P=0.018 and P=0.039 respectively). The subjects maintained a stable weight throughout the study. No major significant changes in total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, inflammatory markers, and appetite-regulating hormones/visual analogue scale were observed between the groups. Conclusions Partially replacing SFAs with MUFAs in a chocolate-based snack as part of a short-term isocaloric diet in healthy individuals may limit SFAs detrimental effects on insulin sensitivity and decrease circulating harmful sphingolipids in young adults. Optimal glycemic control in diabetic patients remains a difficult goal to achieve. Hypoglycemia, nausea and weight gain can compromise the patients' adherence to antidiabetic therapy over time. GLP-1 receptor agonists have been shown to improve glycemic control and reduce the incidence of side effects both when used in monotherapy and in combination with other hypoglycemic drugs. The growing interest of nephrologists in GLP-1 receptor agonists derives from numerous studies showing that not only they positively affect traditional cardiovascular risk factors, but also exert a protective effect on renal function regardless of their hypoglycemic effects, thus delaying the development and progression of diabetic nephropathy. The aim of this paper is to review the latest evidence on pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics and the direct and indirect mechanisms through which GLP-1 receptor agonists confer nephroprotection, improving the renal outcomes of diabetic patients.

Pneumothorax in newborns can be life-threatening. The traditional treatment of pneumothorax is chest drain placement. Recently, modified pigtail catheter has been proposed as a less traumatic approach despite limited experience in infants. To compare the effectiveness and safety of pigtail catheters versus traditional straight chest drains in term and preterm infants with pneumothorax, in two tertiary neonatal units: Policlinico Hospital in Bari, IT and John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, UK. We retrospectively reviewed medical records of 47 newborns with pneumothorax admitted to the two units between October 2009 and June 2017, and treated with either pigtail catheters or straight chest drains. Three newborns (6.7%) were excluded from the study because they were treated with both types of drains. The remaining 44 neonates were included in the analysis. Overall, 56.8% (n = 25/44) of pneumothoraces were drained with pigtail catheters and 43.2% (n = 19/44) with straight drains. No differences in gestational age and birth weight were found. The success rate, defined as complete radiological resolution of the pneumothorax after drainage, was significantly higher in the pigtail group (96.0% versus 73.7%; p 0.05). Days of drainage, length of hospital stay and duration of respiratory support were not significantly different. Subcutaneous emphysema and drain dislodgement/malfunction occurred only in the straight drain group (0.0% versus 11.1%; p = 0.181). No significant differences in mortality between the two groups were found (28.0% pigtail group versus 26.3% straight drain group; p 0.05).Conclusion: Pigtail catheters are a safe and effective alternative to traditional chest drains for infants with pneumothorax. Objective To assess the prevalence of functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) in the first year of life and the influence of different neonatal factors on development of FGIDs. Study design A prospective cohort multicenter study including neonates, consecutively enrolled at birth, and followed up until 1 year. Gestational age, neonatal antibiotic administration, duration of hospitalization, mode of delivery, birth weight, and feeding pattern were recorded. FGIDs were classified according to Rome III criteria and assessed at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months of life. Results Among 1152 newborns enrolled, 934 (81.1%) completed the study, 302 (32%) were newborns born preterm, 320 (34%) had neonatal antibiotics, and 718 (76.9%) had at least 1 FGID according to Rome III criteria (443 [47.4%] infantile colic, 374 [40.0%] regurgitation, 297 [31.8%] infant dyschezia, 248 [26.6%] functional constipation, and 34 [3.6%] functional diarrhea) throughout the first year of life. The proportion of infants born preterm presenting with FGIDs (86%) was significantly greater compared with infants born full term (72.5%) (χ2 = 21.3, P = .0001). On multivariate analysis, prematurity and neonatal use of antibiotics was significantly associated with at least 1 FGID. Conclusions We found a high rate FGIDs in infants, likely related to the population recruited, the long observation period, the diagnosis based on Rome III criteria, and parental reports. Preterm delivery and neonatal use of antibiotics in the first months of life are associated with an increased incidence of FGIDs, particularly infantile colic and regurgitation. In our population, cesarean delivery and feeding pattern at 1 month of life emerged as additional risk factors for infant dyschezia and functional diarrhea. Other neonatal factors associated with FGIDs need to be further explored.

Objective This study was aimed to evaluate effectiveness of lung ultrasound (LUS) in the management of congenital pulmonary airway malformation and pulmonary sequestration in NICUs. Study Design This is a nonconsecutive case series of neonates admitted to the academic NICU of Policlinico of Bari, Italy, from 2010 to 2018, for suspected lung malformations and examined by LUS. Results Seven neonates were admitted for suspected pulmonary malformations, four neonates were diagnosed with pulmonary sequestration and three with congenital pulmonary airway malformation either type I (two cases) or type II (one case) according to Adzick classification. Prenatal scans had described lung malformations in six patients. Two underwent surgical intervention during the 1st month of life. All were successfully discharged home and their follow-up has been uneventful thereafter. In all the seven neonates, LUS easily detected the lesion showing a significantly high correspondence with computed tomography (CT) scan findings. Conclusion We described the first case series of neonates affected by complex pulmonary malformations, assessed by LUS. In our experience, LUS was safe and effective for the diagnosis with high degree of consistency with CT scan findings. We suggest that LUS might be an important diagnostic method for lung malformations in newborns and a useful technique for their follow-up and late management, avoiding multiple exposures to radiations.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) are a heterogeneous group of conditions of unclear etiology. The biopsychosocial model approach to FGIDs posits that early-life stressors may trigger a cascade of complex interactions between genetic predisposition and risk factors eventually leading to the occurrence of FGIDs. The relationship between the psychological disposition of the mother and FGIDs occurrence is poorly understood. We conducted a study to investigate if parental psychological factors may contribute to the onset of FGIDs in offspring. METHODS We performed a prospective cohort study of parent-infant pairs who completed a battery of self-reported psychological questionnaires and a validated Rome III questionnaire for the diagnosis of infant and toddler FGIDs. The Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS) was used to examine postpartum depression (PPD) symptoms; the Maternity Blues Questionnaire (MBQ) was applied to measure maternity blues severity; the Symptoms Checklist-Revised (SCL90-R) was used to assess the presence of relevant psychiatric symptoms; adult attachment style in mothers was assessed in a continuous way through the five dimensions of the Attachment Style Questionnaire (ASQ). RESULTS Out of the 360 eligible mothers, 200 were enrolled, 113 completed the 3-month follow-up and were included in the final analysis. PPD symptoms prevalence was 20.4%, 20%, 13.2%, and 13.1% respectively at 3 days, 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months after delivery. 40.4% of mothers suffered from severe blues according to the MBQ. Relevant psychiatric symptoms (SCL90-R) were present in 7.8% and 10.9% of mothers, respectively at 1 week and 3 months after delivery. 48.7% of mothers showed a secure attachment pattern measured through the RQ. At 1-month follow-up, infant regurgitation was diagnosed in 26 (23%) of infants, infantile colic in 31 (27.4%), dyschezia in 17 (15%), and functional constipation in 9 (8%). At 3-month follow-up, FGIDs prevalence was respectively 16 (19.3%), 11 (13.3%), 4 (4.8%), and 11 (13.3%). A significant positive association between PPD symptoms starting 3 days after delivery and the presence of infantile colic on setting 1 month after birth was found (P = 0.028), as well as between PPD symptoms occurrence 7 days after delivery and infantile regurgitation beginning 1 month after birth (P = 0.042). A higher prevalence of infantile colic was found in the offspring of mothers suffering from PPD symptoms from 3 days after delivery (54.5 vs 19.8; P = 0.001). No significant association was found between FGIDs and psychiatric symptoms and maternity blues at any timepoint. On the other hand, mothers of infants with regurgitation with an onset 1 month after birth have higher insecurity score in avoidant and fearful ASQ-related attachment dimensions (respectively, P = 0.03, P = 0.042, P = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS Maternal psychological factors might contribute to the onset of infant FGIDs in offspring. Early screening of postpartum depression symptoms and early implementation of psychological interventions within the postpartum period might promote the health of the mother-infant dyad.

Background: Functional gastrointestinal disorders are often extremely distressing for the infant and parents, leading to infant discomfort and crying, parental anxiety, repeated healthcare consultations, and escalating healthcare costs. Aim: In this narrative review we analyzed the relationship between maternal psychological status during pregnancy and postpartum and the main infantile functional gastrointestinal disorders. Materials and Methods: The narrative review was conducted searching scientific databases for articles reporting on infantile functional gastrointestinal disorders in association with maternal depressive or anxiety disorders. Results: Seven studies were suitable. Discussion: Maternal psychological disorders may be correlated to infantile functional gastrointestinal disorders. Whether it is the excessive crying that favors the onset of maternal psychological disorders or, in contrast, an altered attachment style due to the maternal status that facilitates the onset of functional gastrointestinal disorders in the infant is still an open question. Recent findings revealed that both anxious and depressed mothers are more likely to have an adverse gut microbiome. Conclusions: A healthy interaction of the mother-baby dyad is advantageous in ensuring the mental and physical development of the offspring. Gynecologists, general practitioners and pediatricians should be alert for early identification of mothers at risk with the aim to initiate timely targeted interventions. Further research on the role of microbiota and the possible therapeutic approaches with probiotics is required.

Background: Vegetarian and vegan weaning have increasing popularity among parents and families. However, if not correctly managed, they may lead to wrong feeding regimens, causing severe nutritional deficiencies requiring specific nutritional support or even the need for hospitalization. Aim: To assess the prevalence of vegetarian and vegan weaning among Italian families and to provide an up-to-date narrative review of supporting evidence. Materials and methods: We investigated 360 Italian families using a 40-item questionnaire. The narrative review was conducted searching scientific databases for articles reporting on vegetarian and vegan weaning. Results: 8.6% of mothers follow an alternative feeding regimen and 9.2% of infants were weaned according to a vegetarian or vegan diet. The breastfeeding duration was longer in vegetarian/vegan infants (15.8 vs. 9.7 months; p < 0.0001). Almost half of parents (45.2%) claim that their pediatrician was unable to provide sufficient information and adequate indications regarding unconventional weaning and 77.4% of parents reported the pediatrician’s resistance towards alternative weaning methods. Nine studies were suitable for the review process. The vast majority of authors agree on the fact that vegetarian and vegan weaning may cause severe nutritional deficiencies, whose detrimental effects are particularly significant in the early stages of life. Discussion and conclusion: Our results show that alternative weaning methods are followed by a significant number of families; in half of the cases, the family pediatrician was not perceived as an appropriate guide in this delicate process. To date, consistent findings to support both the safety and feasibility of alternative weaning methods are still lacking. Since the risk of nutritional deficiencies in the early stages of life is high, pediatricians have a pivotal role in guiding parents and advising them on the most appropriate and complete diet regimen during childhood. Efforts should be made to enhance nutritional understanding among pediatricians as an unsupervised vegetarian or vegan diet can cause severe nutritional deficiencies with possible detrimental long-term effects.

Background and objectives: Recent literature suggests that lung ultrasound might have a role in the diagnosis and management of bronchiolitis. The aim of the study is to evaluate the relationship between an ultrasound score and the clinical progression of bronchiolitis: need for supplemental oxygen, duration of oxygen therapy and hospital stay. Materials and Methods: This was a prospective observational single-center study, conducted in a pediatric unit during the 2017&ndash, 2018 epidemic periods. All consecutive patients admitted with clinical signs of acute bronchiolitis, but without the need for supplemental oxygen, underwent a lung ultrasound in the first 24 h of hospital care. The lung involvement was graded based on the ultrasound score. During clinical progression, need for supplemental oxygen, duration of oxygen therapy and duration of hospital stay were recorded. Results: The final analysis included 83 patients, with a mean age of 4.5 &plusmn, 4.1 months. The lung ultrasound score in patients that required supplemental oxygen during hospitalization was 4.5 &plusmn, 1.7 (range: 2.0&ndash, 8.0), different from the one of the not supplemented infants (2.5 &plusmn, 1.8, range: 0.0&ndash, 6.0, p &lt, 0.001). Ultrasound score was associated with the need for supplemental oxygen (OR = 2.2, 95% CI = 1.5&ndash, 3.3, 0.0001). Duration of oxygen therapy was not associated with LUS score (p &gt, 0.05). Length of hospital stay (coef. = 0.5, 95% CI = 0.2&ndash, 0.7, 0.0001) correlates with LUS score. Conclusion: Lung ultrasound score correlates with the need of supplemental oxygen and length of hospital stay in infants with acute bronchiolitis.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the vaccination coverage at 24 months of chronological age in a sample of preterm infants discharged by the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the Bari Policlinico University General Hospital in Italy. The list of infants preterm born discharged during 2013 by the NICU was obtained by hospital database. Vaccination status of each subject at 24 months of chronological age was acquired by the Apulian Regional Vaccination Register (GIAVA). 159 preterm borns were enrolled in this study. 98.1% received the 1st dose of hexavalent vaccine and 98.7% the 1st dose of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine. The 8.8% of hexavalent vaccinations were performed during hospitalization. The percentage of immunized subjects decreased to 91.2% and 87.3% for the 2nd and 3rd dose of hexavalent vaccine and to 90.6% and 86.1% for the 2nd and 3rd dose of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine. Coverage for MMR, MEN C and Varicella vaccines were, respectively 76.4%, 86.0% and 80.9%. Pre-terms received the vaccinations later than the age recommended by public health guidelines. Age at the immunization, for all vaccines, seems to increase for lower gestational age and birth weight and for higher length of hospitalization. This study shows a high risk of vaccine delay among pre-terms born. There is a strong need to improve specific vaccination strategies for this group. Neonatologists might play a key role in informing parents about the vaccination schedule at the moment of NICU discharge and during follow-up, also preparing correct time schedule.

Children have tended to have milder symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic than adults and multisystem inflammatory syndrome has been a rare complication. However, restrictions implemented to reduce transmission have directly affected children, as most countries closed schools during the first wave, despite a lack of strong evidence. Europe is now facing a rising of new cases and this will be a challenge for health systems as temperatures drop and influenza and bronchiolitis rise.

AIM To compare a Mediterranean diet (MED) with a high-fibre vegetarian diet (HFV) in terms of hunger-satiety perception through post-prandial assessment of appetite-related hormones glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and oxyntomodulin, as well as self-rated visual analogue scale (VAS) quantification, in overweight/obese subjects with type 2 diabetes (T2D). MATERIALS AND METHODS Twelve T2D subjects (Male to female ratio = 7:5), mean age 63 ± 8.5 years, were enrolled in a randomized, controlled, crossover study. Participants consumed an MED meal as well as an isocaloric meal rich in complex carbohydrate as well as an isocaloric MED meal in two different visits with a 1-week washout period between the two visits. Appetite ratings, glucose/insulin, and gastrointestinal hormone concentrations were measured at fasting and every 30' until 210' following meal consumption. RESULTS GLP-1 and oxyntomodulin levels were significantly higher following MED meal compared with HFV meals (210' area under the curve, p < 0.022 and p < 0.023, respectively). Both MED and HFV meal resulted in a biphasic pattern of GLP-1 and oxyntomodulin, although MED meal was related to a delayed, significantly higher second GLP-1 peak at 150' compared with that of HFV meal (p < 0.05). MED meal was related to lower glucose profile compared with HFV meal (p < 0.039), whereas we did not observe significant changes in terms of self-reported VAS scores and insulin trend. CONCLUSIONS In T2D overweight/obese subjects, an MED meal is more effective than a HFV meal in terms of post-prandial plasma glucose homoeostasis and GLP-1 and oxyntomodulin release. These changes were not confirmed by VAS appetite self-assessment over a 210' period.

The aims of this study were to evaluate the efficacy of magnesium alginate in decreasing functional regurgitation symptoms in infants, and to assess the cost&ndash, benefit ratio of magnesium alginate compared to a thickened formula. A multicenter perspective cross-over study was conducted in formula-fed infants with persisting regurgitation, randomly assigned to receive two weeks of a magnesium-alginate-based formulation followed by two weeks of thickened formula, or vice-versa. Infants, exclusively breast-fed, were followed up for two weeks while receiving magnesium alginate. Symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux (GER) were evaluated through the Infant Gastroesophageal Reflux Questionnaire Revised (I-GERQ-R). Direct cost of treatments was also calculated. Seventy-two infants completed the study. We found a significant reduction of I-GERQ-R scores over time (F = 55.387, p &lt, 0.001) in all groups with no difference between the sequences of administration (F = 0.268, p = 0.848) in formula-fed infants and between exclusively breast-fed and formula-fed infants receiving magnesium alginate (t = 1.55, p = 0.126). The mean cost savings per infant was &euro, 4.60 (&plusmn, 11.2) in formula-fed infants treated with magnesium alginate compared to thickened formula (t = 2.91, p &lt, 0.0005). Conclusions were that the magnesium-alginate formulation reduces GER symptoms both in formula-fed and breast-fed infants. In formula-fed infants, clinical efficacy is similar to thickened formulas with a slightly lower cost of treatment.

Background: This study was carried out to evaluate enteral feeding advancement and tolerance in preterm infants receiving one of two marketed formulas: intact protein preterm formula (IPF) or extensively hydrolyzed formula (EHF) for the first 14 feeding days. Methods: Primary outcome was days to full enteral feeding (&ge, 140 mL/kg/day). Per protocol analyses included the following: all participants who met study entrance criteria and completed study feeding (primary) and those who received &ge, 75% enteral intake from study formula (subset). Mothers were encouraged to provide their breast milk. Results: Of the 65 enrolled (IPF: n = 32, EHF: n = 33), 60 completed study feeding per protocol (IPF: n = 30, EHF: n = 30), 37 (62%) received predominantly breast milk, and 23 (38%) received &ge, 75% study formula intake (IPF: n = 11, EHF: n = 12). No group differences were detected in tolerance measures. No necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) was reported. Median time to achievement of full enteral feeding was significantly shorter for the IPF vs. EHF group (day 10 vs. 14, p &lt, 0.05) (subset analysis). Mean enteral intake significantly increased by day 14 for the IPF group (p &lt, 0.05), reflecting group divergence as achieved feeding volumes increased. Conclusions: Results suggest shorter time to full enteral feeding and higher feeding volume achieved by study end in preterm infants receiving intact protein preterm formula versus extensively hydrolyzed formula.

Objectives: To evaluate the relationship between gastric emptying (GE) time and days to achievement of full enteral feeding (&ge, 140 mL/kg/day) in preterm infants randomly assigned to receive one of two marketed study formulas for the first 14 feeding days: intact protein premature formula (IPF) or extensively hydrolyzed protein (EHF) formula. Methods: In this triple-blind, controlled, prospective, clinical trial, we report GE time (time to half-emptying, t1/2) by real-time ultrasonography on Study Day 14, in preterm infants receiving IPF or EHF formula. The association between GE time and achievement of full enteral feeding was evaluated by Pearson correlation. Per-protocol populations for analysis included participants who (1) completed the study (overall) and (2) who received &ge, 75% study formula intake (mL/kg/day). Results: Median GE time at Day 14 was significantly faster for the EHF vs. IPF group overall and in participants who received &ge, 75% study formula intake (p &le, 0.018). However, we demonstrated GE time had no correlation with the achievement of full enteral feeding (r = 0.08, p = 0.547). Conclusion: Feeding IP premature formula vs. EH formula was associated with shorter time to full enteral feeding. However, faster GE time did not predict feeding success and may not be a clinically relevant surrogate for assessing feeding tolerance.

Adiposity rebound (AR) refers to the second rise of the body mass index (BMI) curve that usually occurs physiologically between five and seven years of age. AR timing has a great impact on patients&rsquo, health, since early adiposity rebound (EAR) is associated with the development of metabolic syndrome later in life. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of EAR in a cohort of inborn preterm infants admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Section of the Policlinico University Hospital of Bari, Italy. Secondarily, we assessed whether some determinants such as (1) gender, (2) delivery mode, (3) birth weight and classification into small, normal, or large for gestational age, (4) type of feeding, (5) breastfeeding duration, (6) timing of introduction of solid food, (7) parental education, and (8) parental pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) influenced EAR in this cohort. The tertiary aim was to evaluate the prevalence of obesity or being overweight at seven years of age in children according to early versus timely AR. This is a prospective, population-based longitudinal study conducted at the Neonatal Intensive Care Section of the Policlinico University Hospital of Bari, Italy. Inborn preterm infants admitted to the neonatal ward between 2009 and 2011 were eligible. Enrolled preterm infants were evaluated at birth and at 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, and 24 months and 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 years of age. Weight and height data were analyzed, and BMI was calculated. AR was assessed in the growth trajectory in a body mass index (BMI) plot. Of the 250 preterm newborns included, 100 completed the seven-year follow-up and entered the final analysis, 138 were lost during the seven-year follow-up, and in 12 cases parents withdrew over the course of the study. The prevalence of EAR in our cohort of preterm newborns was 54% at seven years of age. Early adiposity rebound was associated with being large for gestational age (LGA) at birth. No other factors were associated with EAR. Early adiposity rebounders had a significantly higher BMI at seven years compared to children with timely AR (17.2 &plusmn, 2.7 vs. 15.6 &plusmn, 2.05, p = 0.021). No significant differences were found in the prevalence of obesity or being overweight at seven years of age in children with early or timely AR (29% vs. 14%, p = 0.202). Ex-preterm infants have an increased risk of EAR. Since EAR may lead to long-term detrimental health effects with the onset of various chronic diseases (e.g., obesity, metabolic syndrome, etc.), healthcare providers should be prepared to counteract its occurrence, especially in delicate sub-populations of infants.

Congenital anomalies are significant causes of mortality and morbidity in infancy and childhood. Embryogenesis requires specific signaling pathways to regulate cell proliferation and differentiation. These signaling pathways are sensitive to endogenous and exogenous agents able to produce several structural changes of the developing fetus. Oxidative stress, due to an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species and antioxidant defenses, disrupts signaling pathways with a causative role in birth defects. This review provides a basis for understanding the role of oxidative stress in the pathomechanism of congenital malformations, discussing the mechanisms related to some congenital malformations. New insights in the knowledge of pathomechanism of oxidative stress-related congenital malformations, according to experimental and human studies, represent the basis of possible clinical applications in screening, prevention, and therapies.

Background Neonatal severe primary hyperparathyroidism (NSHPT) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder of calcium homeostasis, characterized by striking hyperparathyroidism, marked hypercalcemia and hyperparathyroid bone disease. We report the case of a newborn with a novel homozygous mutation of the CaSR, treated by successful subtotal parathyroidectomy, who had an acute presentation of the disease, i.e. out-of hospital cardiorespiratory arrest. . Case presentation A 8-day-old female newborn was admitted to the NICU of University of Bari “Aldo Moro” (Italy) after a cardiorespiratory arrest occurred at home. Severe hypercalcemia was found and different drug therapies were employed (Furosemide, Cinacalcet and bisphosphonate), as well as hyperhydration, until subtotal parathyroidectomy, was performed at day 32. Our patient’s mutation was never described before so that a strict and individualized long-term follow-up was started. Conclusions This case of NSHPT suggests that a near-miss event, labelled as a possible case of SIDS, could also be due to severe hypercalcemia and evidentiates the difficulties of the neonatal management of NSHPT. Furthermore, the identification of the specific CaSR mutation provides the substrate for prenatal diagnosis.

Introduction: To investigate the effectiveness and the safety of a probiotic-mixture (Vivomixx®, Visbiome®, DeSimone Formulation®; Danisco-DuPont, Madison, WI, USA) for the treatment of infantile colic in breastfed infants, compared with a placebo. Methods: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted in exclusively breastfed infants with colic, randomly assigned to receive a probiotic-mixture or a placebo for 21 days. A structured diary of gastrointestinal events of the infants was given to the parents to complete. Samples of feces were also collected to evaluate microbial content and metabolome using fecal real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-based analysis. Study registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT01869426). Results: Fifty-three exclusively-breastfed infants completed three weeks of treatment with a probiotic-mixture (n = 27) or a placebo (n = 26). Infants receiving the probiotic-mixture had less minutes of crying per day throughout the study by the end of treatment period (68.4 min/day vs. 98.7 min/day; p = 0.001). A higher rate of infants from the probiotic-mixture group responded to treatment (defined by reduction of crying times of ≥50% from baseline), on day 14, 12 vs. 5 (p = 0.04) and on day 21, 26 vs. 17 (p = 0.001). A higher quality of life, assessed by a 10-cm visual analogue scale, was reported by parents of the probiotic-mixture group on day 14, 7.1 ± 1.2 vs. 7.7 ± 0.9 (p = 0.02); and on day 21, 6.7 ± 1.6 vs. 5.9 ± 1.0 (p = 0.001). No differences between groups were found regarding anthropometric data, bowel movements, stool consistency or microbiota composition. Probiotics were found to affect the fecal molecular profile. No adverse events were reported. Conclusions: Administration of a probiotic-mixture appears safe and reduces inconsolable crying in exclusively breastfed infants.

Introduction Despite advances in neonatal intensive care and the improvements in surveillance, prevention and vaccination programs, neonatal meningitis still represents an important cause of morbidity and mortality in infants, with the highest mortality in the newborn population. The aim of this article was to summarize current knowledge about this topic with particular attention to management of neonatal meningitis in order to provide a useful tool for clinicians. Evidence acquisition We reviewed the existent literature from five European Countries (France, German, Italy, Spain and UK) on the effectiveness of treatments for bacterial meningitis in newborns taking into consideration the antibiotic resistance phenomenon. Evidence synthesis There are few data available on this topic; bacterial neonatal meningitis treatment and management is currently based more on experience than on high quality evidences. Conclusions Identification of the knowledge gaps may stimulate researchers to design new studies aiming to better define management strategies of bacterial meningitis in newborns.

Healthy microbiota is a critical mediator in maintaining health and it is supposed that dysbiosis could have a role in the pathogenesis of a number of diseases. Evidence supports the hypothesis that maternal dysbiosis could act as a trigger for preterm birth; aberrant colonization of preterm infant gut might have a role in feeding intolerance and pathogenesis of necrotizing enterocolitis. Despite several clinical trials and meta-analyses, it is still not clear if modulation of maternal and neonatal microbiota with probiotic supplementation decreases the risk of preterm birth and its complications.

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia Coli (STEC) infections routinely run as a common gastroenteritis, but in many cases they may evolve towards hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). HUS is a rare disease characterized by microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and acute renal failure. Gut microorganisms have a fundamental impact on human physiology, because they modulate normal intestinal functions and play a pivotal role in influencing the local and systemic immune responses. Despite surveillance established in many countries and major progresses in the understanding of STEC-HUS mechanisms, no specific treatment is currently available. Targeting the gut microbiota could represent a new potential therapeutic strategy in STEC infection. In this paper, we reviewed the current knowledge about microbiota characteristics of patients with STEC infections, as well as in vitro and in vivo evidence of probiotic supplementation in managing STEC gastroenteritis and in HUS onset prevention.

Nutritional therapy is recommended for management of reactive hypoglycemia (RH), a condition characterized by hypoglycemia that occurs within four hours after a meal. The macrobiotic Ma-Pi 2 diet improves glycemic control in subjects with type 2 diabetes. We explored the effect of this diet on outcomes in non-diabetic individuals with RH.Twelve subjects with RH were randomized to the Ma-Pi 2 diet for three days and a control diet for three days in a randomized crossover design. Subjects received snacks on two days out of each three-day period only, and were monitored using continuous glucose monitoring. The 24-h period was divided into daytime (08:00-22:30h [subdivided into 'daytime without snacks' and 'daytime with snacks']) and night-time (22:31-07:59h). The effects of the two diets on the number of RH events (blood glucose70mg/dL [3.9mmol/L]) and the percentage distribution of glucose readings within each of 16 glycemic intervals from40mg/dL (2.2mmol/L) to180mg/dL (4.4mmol/L) were determined.There were significantly fewer RH events on the Ma-Pi 2 diet than the control diet during daytime without snacks (-2.5 events; 95% CI: -7.5, 0.0; P=0.022) and daytime with snacks (-4.25 events; 95% CI: -7.5; -2.0; P=0.013) but no difference at night. The percentage of glucose readings in the interval 71-80mg/dL (3.9-4.4mmol/L) was significantly higher on the control diet during daytime with and without snacks (P=0.03 for both), while the percentage of glucose readings in the interval 91-100mg/dL (5.1-5.6mmol/L) was significantly higher on the Ma-Pi 2 diet during daytime without snacks (P=0.02).The macrobiotic Ma-Pi 2 diet reduced blood glucose excursions during the day, thereby facilitating glycemic control in subjects with RH. The Ma-Pi 2 diet represents an effective nutritional tool for management of RH.

Sclerostin has been directly related to bone turnover increase in dietary-induced weight loss in non-diabetics. This has not been studied in type 2 diabetes, a condition characterized by increased circulating sclerostin and impaired bone turnover. To study the effect of dietary weight loss and quality of the dietary intervention on changes of sclerostin and bone turnover markers in type 2 diabetes. This was a post-hoc analysis of the MADIAB trial, a 21-day randomized controlled trial on overweight/obese type 2 diabetes patients. Patients were randomly assigned 1:1 to the Ma-Pi2 macrobiotic diet or a control diet based on dietary guidelines for type 2 diabetes. Fruits and vegetables (typically associated with the Mediterranean diet) are very rich in carotenoids, i.e. fat-soluble pigments really important in human life. Structurally, carotenoids consists of eleven (beta-carotene, zeaxanthin, lycopene) or ten (alpha-carotene, lutein) conjugated double bonds, responsible for their antioxidant capability in agreement with their substituents. Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) particles oxidation process is the one of the most important first steps of atherosclerotic disease and, consequentially, the first pathogenetical step of cerebro- and cardiovascular events like myocardial infarction and stroke, which are the first cause of death in industrialized countries. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) also seem to be the target of Carotenoids main action, by scavenging singlet oxygen (1O2) and free radicals. Literature data showed that ROS increase atherosclerotic individual burden. The carotenoids scavenging action could reduce atherosclerosis progression partly due to such a decrease in ROS concentrations. Many studied demonstrated such a reduction by analyzing the relationship between carotenoids and Intima-Media Thickness of common carotid artery wall (CCA-IMT), [a well established marker of atherosclerosis evolution] reduction. Aim of this review is to evaluate actual knowledge about the importance of carotenoids molecules in slowing down the starting and the progression of atherosclerotic plaque, and to consider their implementation in everyone's diet as a tool to obtain a sharp decrease of LDL oxidation and their possible effect on endothelial function.

Probiotics are living microorganisms that confer a health benefit when administered in adequate amounts. It has been speculated that probiotics supplementation during pregnancy and in the neonatal period might reduce some maternal and neonatal adverse outcomes. In this narrative review, we describe the rationale behind probiotic supplementation and its possible role in preventing preterm delivery, perinatal infections, functional gastrointestinal diseases, and atopic disorders during early life.

Background: Probiotic supplementation to women during pregnancy and lactation can modulate breast milk composition, with immune benefits being transferred to their infants. Aim: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of high-dose probiotic supplementation to women during late pregnancy and lactation on cytokine profile and secretory IgA (sIgA) in breast milk and thus to study if differences in breast milk composition can affect lactoferrin and sIgA levels in stool samples of newborns. The safety of maternal probiotic administration on neonatal growth pattern and gastrointestinal symptoms were also evaluated. Methods: In a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trial, 66 women took either the probiotic (n = 33) or a placebo (n = 33) daily. Levels of interleukins (IL-6, IL-10 and IL-1β), transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), and sIgA in breast milk; and the level of sIgA and lactoferrin in newborn stool samples were analyzed at birth and then again at one month of life. Antropometrical evaluation and analysis of gastrointestinal events in newborns was also performed. Results: Probiotic maternal consumption had a significant impact on IL6 mean values in colostrum and on IL10 and TGF-β1 mean values in mature breast milk. Fecal sIgA mean values were higher in newborns whose mothers took the probiotic product than in the control group. Probiotic maternal supplementation seems to decrease incidence of infantile colic and regurgitation in infants. Conclusion: High-dose multi-strain probiotic administration to women during pregnancy influences breast milk cytokines pattern and sIgA production in newborns, and seems to improve gastrointestinal functional symptoms in infants.

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) affects predominantly preterm infants, who have specific risk factors leading to intestinal dysbiosis. Manipulations of gut microbiota through probiotics have the potential to prevent NEC.The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the effect of probiotics for NEC prevention in preterm infants, with a focus on specific strains, microbiological strength of currently available studies, and high-risk populations.PubMed and the Cochrane Library were searched for trials published within 4th February 2015. Randomized-controlled trials reporting on NEC and involving preterm infants who were given probiotics in the first month of life were included in the systematic review.Twenty-six studies were suitable for inclusion in the meta-analysis.Data about study design, population, intervention and outcome were extracted and summarized independently by two observers. Background Clinical assessment is the gold standard for diagnosis of bronchiolitis. To date, only one study found LUS (Lung Ultrasound) to be a valuable tool in the diagnosis of bronchiolitis. Aim of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of lung ultrasonography in the diagnosis and management of bronchiolitis in infants. Methods This was an observational cohort study of infants admitted to our Pediatric Unit with suspected bronchiolitis. A physical examination and lung ultrasound scans were performed on each patient. Diagnosis and grading of bronchiolitis was assessed according to a clinical and a ultrasound score. An exploratory analysis was used to assess correspondence between the lung ultrasound findings and the clinical evaluation and to evaluate the inter-observer concordance between the two different sonographs. Results One hundred six infants were studied (average age 71 days). According to our clinical score, 74 infants had mild bronchiolitis, 30 had moderate bronchiolitis and two had severe bronchiolitis. 25 infants composed the control group. Agreement between the clinical and sonographic diagnosis was good (90.6 %) with a statistically significant inter-observer ultrasound diagnosis concordance (89.6 %). Lung ultrasound permits the identification of infants who are in need of supplementary oxygen with a specificity of 98.7 %, a sensitivity of 96.6 %, a positive predictive value of 96.6 % and a negative predictive value of 98.7 %. An aberrant ultrasound lung pattern in posterior chest area was collected in 86 % of infants with bronchiolitis. In all patients clinical improvement at discharge was associated with disappearance of the previous LUS findings. Subpleural lung consolidation of 1 cm or more in the posterior area scan and a quantitative classification of interstitial syndrome based on intercostal spaces involved bilaterally, good correlate with bronchiolitis severity and oxygen use. Conclusions The lung ultrasound findings strictly correlate with the clinical evaluations in infants with bronchiolitis and permit the identification of infants who are in need of supplementary oxygen with high specificity. Scans of the posterior area are more indicative in ascertaining the severity of bronchiolitis. Trial registration Clinical Trial Registration NCT01993797

To provide an overview on the role of gut immunity, nervous system and motility patterns in the development of feeding intolerance in newborns. Maturation of the GI is important not only for digestion and absorption, but for endocrine and exocrine function as well. There is little data available about the development of the motility function and of the mucosal barrier of the human gut, and in particular about the motility patterns and mucosal changes in newborns during early days of life. It is known that functional maturation of the gastrointestinal tract is quite different over time with respect to its anatomical development. Besides, the gastrointestinal tract through innate and specific immunologic factors, acts as a defense against ingested antigens. In addition to the mucous membrane integrity and digestion, numerous specific immunologic cells and mediators orchestrate such defensive mechanisms. In case of food antigens, the outcome is usually in favor of tolerance. Defects in that barrier, however, can lead to the development of aberrant immunologic responses, including hypersensitivity reactions. It is obvious that an appropriate feeding regimen during early infancy is in favor of food tolerance. However, in addition to genetic predisposition, development of tolerance is facilitated by an adequate gut barrier (immune or nonimmune), well-coordinated GI motility and nervous network, and appropriate food regimen.

Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) are defined as a variable combination of chronic or recurrent gastrointestinal symptoms not explained by structural or biochemical abnormalities. Infantile colic, gastroesophageal reflux, and constipation are the most common FGIDs that lead to referral to a pediatrician during the first 6 months of life and are often responsible for hospitalization, feeding changes, use of drugs, parental anxiety, and loss of parental working days with relevant social consequences. We performed a retrospective study on patients referred for recurrent abdominal pain from January 2002 trough December 2009 to our Pediatric Gastroenterology Outpatient Unit. The population studied was matched with healthy control without history of recurrent abdominal pain, enrolled among pediatricians practicing primary health care. History of infantile colic, regurgitation, and functional constipation was detected respectively in 26.41, 25.31, and 30.16 % of children diagnosed with FGIDs compared to 11.34, 12.85, and 11.76 % of healthy children. Conclusion: According to our data, children with a history of gastrointestinal infantile distress have a higher prevalence of FGIDs years later.

Background Autoantibody-related congenital heart block (CHB) is an autoimmune condition in which trans placental passage of maternal autoantibodies cause damage to the developing heart conduction system of the foetus. Case presentation We report a case of an Italian 31–year-old woman, in a good clinical status, referred to our Centre at 26 weeks of her first pregnancy, because of foetal bradycardia, found during routine foetal ultrasonography. Foetal echocardiography revealed a 3rd degree CHB, without any anatomical defects. Despite the mother was asymptomatic for autoimmune disease, anti-Ro/La were searched for, because of the hypothesis of autoantibody-related CHB. High title of maternal anti-Ro/SSA antibodies was found and diagnosis of an autoantibody-related CHB was made. A combination treatment protocol of the mother was started with oral betamethasone, plasmapheresis and IVIG. An emergency C-section was performed at 32 + 3 weeks of gestation because of a non-reassuring cardiotocography pattern. This review summarizes these interactions in the early colonization of gastrointestinal tract with a major focus on the role of intestinal microbiota in the pathogenesis of feeding intolerance in preterm newborn. The potential benefit of early probiotic supplementation opens new perspectives in case of altered intestinal colonization at birth as preventive and therapeutic agents.

Aim. To evaluate the influence of selected maternal and neonatal characteristics on aorta walls in term, appropriately grown-for-gestational age newborns.Methods. Age, parity, previous abortions, weight, height, body mass index before and after delivery, smoking, and history of hypertension, of diabetes, of cardiovascular diseases, and of dyslipidemia were all assessed in seventy mothers. They delivered 34 males and 36 females healthy term newborns who underwent ultrasound evaluation of the anteroposterior infrarenal abdominal aorta diameter (APAO), biochemical profile (glucose, insulin, total cholesterol, HDL and LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, fibrinogen, and D-dimers homeostasis model assessment [HOMAIR]index), and biometric parameters.Results. APAO was related to newborn length (r=+0.36;P=0.001), head circumference (r=+0.37;P=0.001), gestational age (r=+0.40,P=0.0005), HOMA index (r=+0.24;P=0.04), and D-dimers (r=+0.33,P=0.004). Smoke influenced APAO values (odds ratio: 1.80; confidence interval 95%: 1.05–3.30), as well as diabetes during pregnancy (r=+0.42,P=0.0002). Maternal height influenced neonatal APAO (r=+0.47,P=0.00003). Multiple regression analysis outlined neonatal D-dimers as still significantly related to neonatal APAO values.Conclusions. Many maternal and neonatal characteristics could influence aorta structures. Neonatal D-dimers are independently related to APAO.

To establish, using echocardiography, color-flow Doppler and tissue doppler imaging (TDI), physiological values of systolic/diastolic indexes in healthy term/pre-term newborns, and to identify how different degrees of maturity influence morpho-functional cardiac alterations during the transitional period.33 term newborns (M = 19, F = 14; gestational ages: 37th-41st week), and 20 pre-term infants (M = 11, F = 9; gestational ages: 31st-36th week) admitted to our department were studied. All infants underwent to clinical and Doppler ultrasound evaluations, carried out by the third to fourth day. Investigations included: M-mode echocardiography, color-flow Doppler and TDI.Term and preterm neonates differed for: interventricular septum and left systolic/diastolic ventricle diameters (p0.01 and0.05 respectively); left ventricle posterior wall in systole (p0.01); shortening and ejection fraction (p0.05). Color-flow Doppler parameters on the tricuspid (peak E, peak A, ratio E/A; p0.05) and on the mitral (peak E and E/A ratio; p0.01) significantly differed between the two groups. Significant differences were also present for basal left ventricular lateral wall and right ventricular lateral wall in the Ew (p0.01 and0.05 respectively), Sw peak (p0.01 and0.05 respectively), and Ew/Aw (p0.05). The isovolumetric relax time and the E/Ew measured on the medial mitral annulus also demonstrated significant differences (p0.01) between the two groups.TDI is feasible in preterm neonates and enables assessment of myocardial velocities. With increasing gestational age, higher myocardial velocities and lower E/E' Πratios were found. TDI addition to standard neonatal echocardiography may provide further important information about cardiac function.

The supplement provides the scientific and clinical evidencethat should guide current clinical practice and serve future studiesthat will enable better understanding and appropriate managementby physicians and families alike.Burns and Thapar review the embryonic and postnatal eventsrelated to the enteric nervous system (ENS), which is the regulatorof gut secretion, blood flow, sensation, and coordinated motility (1).They provide evidence that a significant amount of modification ofthe ENS occurs not only during the fetal period but also postnatally;thus the ENS can be altered in a number of ways: stress, infections,and changes in nutrition.Indrio et al focus on the non-nutritive pathophysiology ofcolic, looking at the relation of colic to gastroesophageal reflux(GER), GI motility disorders, the role of gut hormones, andintestinal microflora (2). Their review raises the old debate ofwhether colic is a functional disorder (eg, troubling GER or‘‘immature’’ motility) or should be regarded as a normal develop-mental occurrence. The authors correctly conclude that ‘‘littleevidence supports a substantial role of GER or GERD in themajority of infants with colic,’’ and observations for the role ofhormones such as ghrelin and motilin as well as the positive effectshown for probiotic supplementation should be studied further.Indrio and colleagues also elaborate on the role of probioticsin the management of infant colic and provide recent and excitingdata on the clinical benefit of the administration of probiotics intreating functional disorders and organic diseases (3). This reviewexplores the hypothesis that there is a window of time when the gutmicrobiota may affect the structure and the function of the brain.The review by Di Lorenzo on early life events brings uselegantly to the ‘‘vulnerable child,’’ summarizing what is knownabout factors that predispose an infant to become colicky (4). Muchof the available data refers to the possible link among infectious,inflammatory, and psychological noxious events that may causechanges in enteric nerve reactivity, as well as immune responses oralterations in intestinal microbiota composition that can then lead tofunctional GI disorders later in life. For example, there is evidencethat early pain experiences are associated with altered painresponses later in infancy. Although the genetic background cannotbe changed and the stressful events may be unavoidable, identifyingthe child at risk may provide an opportunity for interventions thatwill attenuate or prevent later functional disorders.Ha-Vinh Leuchter et al discuss the possibility that the peakshape of the crying behavior found in colicky as opposed to non-colicky babies, the circadian rhythm of the crying, and the obser-vation that these babies are not soothed by ordinary sensorystimulation reflect a difference in central nervous system function-ing (eg, differences in circadian rhythm maturation, differentresponse to stimuli) rather than GI dysfunction (5).Heine summarizes available data on the relation betweencow’s-milk allergy and infant colic (6).
