This paper explores Rollo May's 1992 reassessment of transpersonal psychology, in which he reverses his 1986 and 1989 arguments against transpersonal psychology. Equally relevant, this paper shows that May was actually interested in supporting what is now called ecopsychology. Schroll (following Alan Drengson and Arne Naess) now refers to ecopsychology as transpersonal ecosophy. This paper offers a thorough examination of several key concerns that May had regarding his reservations toward accepting transpersonal psychology's legitimacy, and includes May's vigorous discussion with Ken Wilber. Wilber's discussion with Kirk Schneider's 1987 and 1989 critique of transpersonal psychology is also examined. This article is about the failure of humanistic psychology to live up to the challenge of Maslow's basic idea of levels of psychospiritual development. Too many humanistic writers are still living in Flatland, where there are no levels, no differences in ways of looking at the world, no grades of consciousness. Some examples are given. This article argues that it would be more in keeping with Maslow's humanistic legacy to acknowledge an evolutionary hierarchy of thought in action. Summary The concept of self-actualization is central to humanistic psychology. But what is this self that is to be actualized? Maslow, who introduced the term, thought that it belonged to the realm of Being, most easily accessed through peak experiences. It was essentially something transcendent, and to contact it was to partake of something like a mystical experience. But Maslow, in company with many earlier and later writers, took it that there was just one mystical experience, which might be described as unitive consciousness or cosmic consciousness. There are, however, at least seven quite separate and distinct mystical experiences, and I outline these with references to the literature of mysticism. The practice of meditation is then looked at in the light of these considerations, and criticized for its ambiguity. The spiritual path is then discussed in the context of the preceding argument, and I show that the practice of personal growth and humanistic psychotherapy offer a safe and sound basis for starting on the spiritual path. This may lead to a clean mysticism free from mystification, and a real religion with an aware psychology.
