This article studies the essays of Michel de Montaigne in the context of the tradition of epideictic rhetoric from antiquity to the Renaissance, with particular attention to the humanist reception of Aristotle's Rhetoric. The focus of this attention is the relationship between epideictic and consensus, which proves to be more problematic than Aristotle seems to have anticipated. If we read Montaigne's essay "Des Cannibales," as a paradoxical encomium and compare it to Plutarch's declamation on the fortune of Alexander, we can see how epideictic works to undermine consensus and even to challenge the very impulse to conform to social and ethical norms. The article examines two studies of Renaissance humanism by Ann Moss and Paul Botley. It is claimed that the books "Renaissance Truth and the Latin Language Turn," by Moss and "Latin Translation in the Renaissance: The Theory and Practice of Leonard Bruni, Giannozzo Manetti and Desiderius Erasmus," by Botley, have contributed to an already emerging discipline. In her book, Moss addressed the shift from scholastic Latin to humanist Latin in European Renaissance called Latin language turn.

This essay examines the tension between humanism and Reformation concerning the ethic of timing espoused by Erasmus and his fellow humanists. In the course of the sixteenth century, the humanist ideal of the man for all seasons becomes the reformers' nemesis, the temporizer or confessional chameleon. We will trace this topos from Erasmus' adages to Montaigne's essays in order to see how humanism carries within it the seeds of counter-Reformation while the Reformation affirms itself as a counter-humanism.
