Magnesium alloys, particularly AZ61 alloys have been widely used in the transportation industry. In the present study, the effect of aging treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of AZ61 alloys with silicon (Si) addition was studied under different temperatures and times. The aim of this paper is to improve the properties of Magnesium AZ61 alloys with Si addition. For this investigation, samples were cast, solution treated and hot rolled. Then the samples were aged at 180°C and 220°C for different time periods. Microstructures were investigated using optical microscope and scanning electron microscope. Micro hardness was measured by a Vickers Hardness tester machine. It is observed that Si modifies the Chinese script shape Mg2Si phase in the AZ61alloy. The morphology of the Mg2Si phase in the alloy changes from the Chinese script shape to the short pole and block shape due to the solution treatment which was performed at 410°C for 20 hours. All the three alloys exhibit maximum hardness, after aging treatment at 180°C for 19 hours and 220°C for 16 hours. However, the rate of increase of hardness is found to be higher at high temperature. AZ61 alloy shows the maximum hardness than those of Si added AZ61 alloys. The structure and property relationship with aging treatment are also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
