The article focuses on the study of survival of patients who have undergone allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT). Researchers have investigated the impact of social support and supportive family relations on patients' ability to cope with BMT. When support is adequate, overall psychosocial adjustment is positively affected. The results of the present study regarding allogeneic hematopoietic transplantation as a function of support from an in-hospital lay care- partner are tantalizing because they support intrinsic belief that emotional support may be associated with increased likelihood of a favorable outcome. Also, researchers are compelled to examine the care-partner phenomenon further. They have not only begun a prospective study to examine the care-partner phenomenon in more depth but also are investigating possible intervention techniques to improve the outcome for patients who lack a consistent lay care-partner during their hospitalization. Toward this end, they are developing a comprehensive psychosocial database and research program that will enhance and institutionalize the possibility of best practices for all BMT patients and their families.
