Garden cress is a vegetable crop in the Brassicaceae family that is appreciated for its nutraceutical and taste-giving components in minimally processed food chains. Due to its very short cycle, which depends on the range of production from microgreens to baby-leaf vegetables, this crop is threatened by soil-borne pathologies developing within the initial stages of germination and emergence. This study aims to evaluate the suppressive bio-compost as an innovative means to counteract the main telluric diseases of garden cress and reduce the risks of yield loss by adopting sustainable remedies and decreasing the dependence on synthetic fungicides. Therefore, eleven green composts obtained using both previously distilled and raw aromatic plant residues were analyzed for suppressive properties against Rhizoctonia solani and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum on sown garden cress. The biological active component of the composts, detected by CO2-release, FDA-hydrolysis and microbial counts, proved to be indispensable for pathogen control in vitro and in vivo, as demonstrated by the loss of suppressiveness after sterilization. Cross-polarization magic angle spinning 13C-nuclear magnetic resonance (CP-MAS-13C-NMR) was used to analyze the molecular distribution of organic C in composts. The results indicated the suitability of the feedstock used to make quality compost. The suppression levels shown by composts P1 (40% wood chips, 30% escarole and 30% a mixture of sage, basil, mint and parsley) and P2 (40% wood chips, 30% escarole and 30% a mixture of essential oil-free sage, basil and rosemary) are promising for the sustainable, non-chemical production of garden cress vegetables.

Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris (Xcc) is the causal agent of black rot in Brassicaceae. It is widespread in Italy and severe outbreaks occur under conditions that favour disease development. In this study a multilocus sequence typing approach (MLST) based on the partial sequence of seven loci was applied to a selection of strains representative of the main areas of cultivation and hosts. The aim was to investigate whether the long tradition of brassica crops in Italy has influenced the evolution of different Xcc populations. All loci were polymorphic; 14 allelic profiles were identified of which 13 were unique to Italian strains. Based on the seven loci, the most common genotype within the Italian Xcc strains (AP1) was also the most representative genotype found in worldwide Xcc strains. This genotype was included in a new clonal complex in addition to three other clonal complexes already identified in Xcc populations. The phylogenetic reconstruction using a concatenated dataset of four conserved protein-coding genes, dnaK, fuyA, gyrB and rpoD, showed that the Italian strains belonged to two genetic groups. Physiological races were also investigated for the first time in Italy. The race structure of Xcc was determined by inoculating eight differential Brassica lines belonging to five species and showed that, in Italy, race 4 is the most widespread, followed by races 1 and 6. No correlation was found between allelic profiles, host of isolation, geographical origin and races, although a prevalent race was identified within the same clonal complex.

a b s t r a c t On-farm composting is an efficient, environmentally safe and cost-effective process for recycle veg- etable residues into productive cycles. Benefits of these composts could include their ability to mediate soil-borne plant pathogen suppression with a significant impact on eco-friendly crop management. In this work, on-farm composts were assayed for ability to control, both in vitro and in vivo, damping-off causing pathogens Rhizoctonia solani and Sclerotinia minor. Tomato and escarole-derived compost was the most suppressive and, furthermore, together with that derived from artichoke wastes, exhibited multi-suppressive activity. Compost communities, characterized at metabolic and global levels by Biolog system, microbial counting, CO2-release and FDA hydrolysis rate, play a major role in compost-based biological control. The complete biotic inactivation by autoclaving composts, has, in fact, reduced or eliminated their ability in pathogen suppression. Solid state 13C CPMAS-NMR spectroscopy revealed that spectral areas typical for phenolic C, as well as methoxyl C, may be associated to suppressivity mecha- nism(s). These evidences suggested that the ecological relationships between organic carbon molecular distribution and microbial structure may contribute to discriminate suppressive composts from null and conducive ones. Nutritional microniches in compost may then have profound effects on the community functions, including those linked to the suppressiveness.
