Citrus scion/rootstock combinations alter the concentration of bioactive compounds in orange juice. The shelf life of freshly squeezed juice can be maximized through packaging and storage. The profiles of ascorbic (AA), dehydroascorbic acid (DHAA), and phenolic compounds were analyzed in juices of four sweet orange scions, Sanguínea de Mombuca (SM), Rubi (R), Lue Gin Gong (LGG), and Valência Delta Seedless (VDS), grafted onto ‘Rangpur’ lime (RL) and ‘Swingle’ citrumelo (SC) rootstocks. The juices obtained from the combination of the ‘Rubi’ orange in both rootstocks stood out by their higher concentration of ascorbic acid (AA) and dehydroascorbic acid (DHAA). Overall, all SC-grafted scions showed higher AA and DHAA and some phenolic compound concentrations. In all combinations, phenolic compounds showed the highest concentrations in the juices at the time of fruit extraction and decreased during storage. Dark packaging provided higher bioactive compounds in juices stored for longer periods. These findings can contribute to the diversification of scion/rootstock cultivars in order to increase the variety of orchards by choosing the best combinations for pasteurized orange juice with higher nutritional value.

Due to the high perishability of figs, calcium stands out as an important nutrient for orchard management. This study aims to study the pre-harvest applications of calcium chloride in fig orchards. The fig trees were sprayed with 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0% CaCl2, and fruits were thereafter stored for 0, 7, 14 and 21 d. The variables analysed were the concentration of calcium in leaves and fruits, weight loss, fruit decay, pectinolytic enzyme activity, and physical and chemical attributes of the fruits; CaCl2 sprays enhanced fruit Ca2+ concentration in leaves (14.03%) and fruits (29.3%) and were effective in reducing polygalacturonase and pectin methylesterase activity, weight loss and fruit decay. Pre-treatment with 1% CaCl2 provided fruits with larger diameters, greater firmness, and higher levels of total phenolic compounds in both fruit peel and pulp. The pre-harvest application at 1% CaCl2 showed to be a promising technique in producing high quality fruits and extended storage by approximately 7 to 10 days. These findings may be useful in planning new cultural practices for fig orchards that produce high-quality fruit with desirable characteristics for growers and consumers.

Starch is widely used in the food and non-food industries, and this is related to its physicochemical characteristics. In the coming years, climate changes will become unpredictable, and these conditions may affect the process of starch biosynthesis and polymer properties. The sweet potato starch market has grown substantially in recent years and understanding the environmental impacts on starch characteristics will contribute to advances for the sector. Herein, the effects of the growing season on the structural, morphological, and physicochemical properties of sweet potato starches were evaluated. Sweet potato trials with two Brazilian cultivars (Canadense and Uruguaiana) were installed in the dry season (planting in March and harvesting in July) and rainy season (planting in October and harvesting in March). Regardless of the cultivar, starches isolated from plants grown in the rainy season have a more ordered structure, with higher gelatinization temperatures, thermal stability, and resistant starch content. Starches from plants grown in the dry season have a higher percentage of small granules with lower crystallinity and lower gelatinization temperatures. These findings can be useful as early knowledge of these changes can help the supply chain to better plan and target suitable markets for naturally modified sweet potato starches.

Fruit production has increased, which has led to an increase in fruit wastage, opening up new opportunities for the use of non-standard fruits as starch sources. Herein, the physicochemical properties of mango starches isolated from the pulp and kernel of four cultivars were investigated. The pulp starches showed higher purity with total starch ranging from 97.84 to 98.09% (dry basis). The kernel starches had a higher percentage of other components (ash, fiber, lipids, protein, sugars). The main mineral in the starches was potassium (0.37 to 1.32 g/kg). Pulp starches were circular and smaller (15–79 to 16.70 µm) and kernel starches were oval and larger (19.75 to 25.33 µm). Differential scanning calorimetry and rapid viscosity studies showed that the kernel starches had higher gelatinization properties. The mango starches were A-type with varying crystallinity levels (28.37–32.35%). PCA analysis showed the greater impact of gelatinization properties on the grouping of cultivars. These findings would be useful for adding commercial value to mango agricultural and industrial waste and for industries in terms of using the starch as an ingredient in food products and other industrial applications.

This study aimed to assess hydrogen cyanamide and nitrogen fertilizer with different concentration to growth and production in ‘Roxo de Valinhos’ fig tree. Two crop cycles (2015/2016 and 2016/2017) was performed in São Manuel city, São Paulo State, Brazil. Phenological and productive data was evaluated in a 2 x 5 factorial (Product x Concentration), organized in randomized complete block design, with three trees by plot. The factor products had as level hydrogen cyanamide and nitrogen fertilizer and the factor concentrations was constituted by 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4%. Furthermore, the following data was evaluated: number of days for budbreak, number of buds per plant, harvest period, branch length and diameter, leaf number, leaf area, number of fruits per plant, fruit mass, production and yield. Plant production was higher in both cycles when the products were used (2.1 and 2.7, respectively). At last, hydrogen cyanamide showed better outcomes due to the higher number of fruits and production. Figs consumption date back to the beginnings of civilization. Currently, consumers have become more demanding about quality of fruits, and figs are then highly indicated, since it is rich in nutrients, making them a great addition to a healthy diet. Although there is only one commercial fig cultivar that is commonly grown in Brazil, different cultivars should be considered for the diversification of fig production with regards to their yield and fruit quality. This research aimed at evaluating growth, yield, physicochemical characteristics and bioactive compounds of figs grown in Brazil. Then, four cultivars (Roxo de Valinhos, White Genova, PI-189 and Troyano) were studied to determine canopy volume, productive efficiency, soluble solids - SS, pH, titratable acidity - TA, SS/TA ratio, sugars, ascorbic acid, phenolic compounds, pigments and antioxidant activity. The cv. White Genova presented the highest canopy volume, while ‘Roxo de Valinhos’, ‘PI-189’ and ‘Troyano’ performed the greatest productive efficiency. The cvs. Roxo de Valinhos, White Genova and Troyano produced fruits with higher content of SS, reducing sugars and SS/TA ratio, while the fruits of ‘PI-189’ and ‘Roxo de Valinhos’ contained the highest levels of antioxidant activity. PCA enabled to differentiate the studied cultivars, which evidenced that PI-189 was the most different of all. O consumo de figos remonta ao início da civilização. Nos dias atuais os consumidores se tornam cada vez mais exigentes com a qualidade das frutas, neste cenário, os figos são altamente indicados, pois são ricos em nutrients e um ótimo complemento para uma dieta saudável. Embora exista apenas uma cultivar comercial de figo comumente cultivada no Brasil, diferentes cultivares devem ser consideradas para a diversificação da produção com base no rendimento produtivo e qualidade dos frutos. Portanto, este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a eficiência produtiva, as características químicas e os compostos bioativos de figos cultivados no Brasil. Para isso, quatro cultivares (Roxo de Valinhos, White Genova, PI-189 e Troyano) foram avaliadas quanto ao volume de copa, eficiência produtiva, sólidos solúveis - SS, pH, acidez titulável - AT, relação SS/AT, açúcares, ácido ascórbico, compostos fenólicos, pigmentos e atividade antioxidante. A partir dos resultados, verifica-se que ‘White Genova’ apresentou o maior volume de copa, enquanto ‘Roxo de Valinhos’, ‘PI-189’ e ‘Troyano’ apresentaram a maior eficiência produtiva. Foi possível verificar também que ‘Roxo de Valinhos’, ‘White Genova’ e ‘Troyano’ produziram frutos com maior teor de SS, açúcares redutores e maior relação SS/AT, enquanto os frutos de ‘PI-189’ e ‘Roxo de Valinhos’ continham níveis mais altos de atividade antioxidante. Por meio da PCA evidenciou-se que a PI-189 é a mais distinta dentre as cultivares avaliadas.

Bananas are the world’s most popular fruit. Nonetheless, a great part of the production is lost, mainly for insect and disease incidences. Thus, cover developing banana bunches is a promising physical protection method that will improve the visual quality of the fruits, especially the rapidly growing consumer demand for healthy fruits. In fact, bags serve as protective barrier, allowing the production of free fruit damage; consequently, lowering production costs by cutting crop losses, as well as avoiding chemical materials. There is a wide variety of bag types and colours, but also, there is a scarce literature on their efficiency. This study hence aimed to evaluate the influence of coloured polyethylene bags on yield, seasonality and plant health of the ‘BRS Conquista’ bananas in subtropical high-altitude growing conditions. Treatments therefore consisted of using white, black, red and blue polyethylene bags, besides control (uncovered). Then, bags were randomly distributed in five blocks, four plants per plot. After bunch harvest, the following evaluation were proceeded: agronomic yield, the interval between bunches cover and harvest, injuries caused by thrips and the incidence of anthracnose. Results indicated that banana bunch coverings did not interfere in bunch yield. Nevertheless, white and black bags reduced the interval between bunch covers and harvest, that is, 114 and 115 days, respectively. Furthermore, white and red bags reduced the damage caused by thrips in fruits; while white, red and blue bags decreased the anthracnose incidence. This study therefore recommends the use of white polyethylene bags to cover banana bunches of the cultivar BRS Conquista, since this bag colour showed highly efficiency in controlling thrips and anthracnose incidence, besides reducing the interval between bunch cover and harvest. Bananas são as frutas mais populares do mundo, porém a incidência de insetos e de doenças provoca muitas perdas de frutos. Neste sentido, o ensacamento dos cachos torna-se uma técnica promissora, sobretudo diante da crescente exigência dos consumidores por frutos de qualidade e seguros do ponto de vista alimentar. Os sacos funcionam como barreira de proteção, permitindo a produção de frutos livres de danos, com consequente redução de perdas e dos custos com aplicações de produtos químicos. Contudo, existe uma grande variedade de tipos e cores de sacos no mercado, mas não há relatos sobre a interferência destes parâmetros sobre a eficiência do ensacamento. Portanto, este estudo objetivou avaliar a influência do uso de sacolas de polietileno, com diferentes cores, sobre o rendimento, sazonalidade e fitossanidade dos cachos da banana ‘BRS Conquista’ cultivada em região subtropical de alta altitude. Os tratamentos consistiram na utilização de sacos de polietileno branco, preto, vermelho e azul, além do controle (sem ensacamento). Estes sacos foram distribuídos aleatoriamente em cinco blocos e quatro plantas por parcela. Após a colheita dos cachos, avaliou-se o rendimento agronômico, o intervalo entre a emissão do cacho e a colheita e a presença de danos de tripes, além do avanço da incidência de antracnose até a maturação dos frutos. A partir dos resultados, verifica-se que o ensacamento não interferiu no rendimento dos cachos. Porém, a utilização de sacos brancos (114 dias) e pretos (115 dias) reduziram o intervalo entre o ensacamento e a colheita. Os sacos brancos e vermelhos reduziram os danos provocados pelos tripes nas frutas; enquanto sacos brancos, vermelhos e azuis diminuíram a incidência de antracnose. Portanto, recomenda-se o uso de sacos de polietileno branco para coberturas de cachos de banana ‘BRS Conquista’, devido à maior eficiência no controle de tripes e antracnose; além de diminuir o intervalo de tempo entre a emissão do cacho e a colheita.

The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of the pre-harvest application of calcium chloride (0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2%) on guava fruits and to evaluate the quality characteristics of the fruits during storage (0, 2, 4, and 6 days). The results showed that the pre-harvest sprays of 1.0% CaCl2 led to an increase in the levels of calcium in the fruits (0.82 g kg−1). The application of 1.0% CaCl2 also promoted 40% increase in ascorbic acid content after harvest (196.5 mg 100 g−1). The lowest weight loss and rot incidence occurred at 1.0% CaCl2. In addition, there was a decrease in the action of pectinmethylesterase and polygalacturonase in storage. Thus, the pre-harvest application of 1.0% CaCl2 in the red guava can preserve the quality of the fruit and increase the nutritional value. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of phosphate fertilizer levels on production parameters and accumulation of dry matter, phosphorus, starch and resistant starch in green fruits. Four banana genotypes were cultivated under the same cultural practices, with varying levels of phosphate fertilizers during three production cycles. Bunches were harvested and evaluated for total fruit mass, average finger mass and yield. Fresh green fruit pulps were analyzed for dry matter, phosphorus, starch and resistant starch content. The results showed that the effects of phosphate fertilizer were genotype dependent and that the increase of P2O5 rates applied in banana fertilization promoted an increase in fruit production with higher levels of phosphorus, starch and resistant starch. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the optimal harvest stage of different cultivars according to five fruit diameters. Through a randomized block design with 4 replicates, the following variables were evaluated such as pH, titratable acidity, soluble solids, maturity index, firmness, fruit peel colour and sugar content on the cultivars Prata-Ana, Maca, FHIA 18, Grand Naine and Nanicao IAC 2001. Fruits from the second bunch of banana bundle were harvested when they reached the diameters of 32, 34, 36, 38 and 40 mm. Results showed that the harvest stages (i.e., banana fruit diameters) affect the fruit quality attributes among cultivars; thus, it is recommended to harvest the fruits of 'FHIA 18' with 34, 36 or 38 mm in diameters; Grand Naine with 38 or 40 mm; 'Maca' and 'Nanicao IAC 2001' with 38 mm; and 'Prata-ana' with 34 or 36 mm. The objective of this work was to evaluate the phenological patterns, vegetative growth, and yield characteristics of fig (Ficus carica)varieties in Southeastern Brazil. The 'Roxo de Valinhos', White Genova, PI-189, and Troyano varieties were distributed in a randomized complete block design and evaluated in the field. The following characteristics were assessed: number of days between pruning and the beginning of sprouting; leaf chlorophyll content; number of shoots on each branch; length, diameter, and number of internodes on each branch; number of leaves per plant; leaf area; number of fruit per plant; mass, length, and diameter of fruit; production and yield; and duration (days) of each phenological stage, such as thermal requirement models. 'Roxo de Valinhos' and White Genova sprouted the fastest and showed the largest number of shoots. Troyano obtained the greatest branch length and diameter, as well as the greatest number of fruit per plant, which had the shortest diameter and length and the lowest mass of fruit. Furthermore, Troyano showed the latest harvest, besides the thermal requirement of 4,577.31 degree-days. 'Roxo de Valinhos' and White Genova produced fruit with the greatest average mass and diameter and the longest length. Troyano shows better vegetative growth and produces more fruit per plant than 'Roxo de Valinhos', but both genotypes show similar yields. Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os padrões fenológicos, o crescimento vegetativo e as características de rendimento de variedades de figueira (Ficus carica) no Sudeste brasileiro. As variedades 'Roxo de Valinhos', White Genova, PI-189 e Troyano foram distribuídas em delineamento de blocos ao acaso e avaliadas em campo. As seguintes características foram avaliadas: número de dias entre a poda e o início da brotação; teor de clorofila das folhas; número de brotos por ramo; comprimento, diâmetro e número de entrenós de cada ramo; número de folhas por planta; área foliar; número de frutos por planta; massa, comprimento e diâmetro dos frutos; produção e produtividade; e duração (dias) de cada estágio fenológico, tais como modelos de requerimento térmico. 'Roxo de Valinhos' e White Genova brotaram mais rapidamente e apresentaram maior número de brotações. Troyano obteve os maiores diâmetro e comprimento dos ramos, assim como maior número de frutos por planta, os quais tiveram os menores diâmetro, comprimento e massa. Além disso, Troyano apresentou colheita mais tardia e necessidade térmica de 4.577,31 graus-dia. 'Roxo de Valinhos' e White Genova apresentaram frutos com maior massa, diâmetro e comprimento. Troyano apresenta melhor desenvolvimento vegetativo e produz mais frutos por planta do que 'Roxo de Valinhos', mas os rendimentos de ambos os genótipos são similares.

The nutrient absorption march in fig (Ficus carica L.) trees and other fruit trees has been studied only at the seedling stage, and little is known about nutrient accumulation in perennial plants when the entire life cycle of the plant is considered. To this end, the present study aimed to evaluate nutrient accumulation in the Roxo de Valinhos fig tree, cultivated with and without supplemental irrigation. The split-plot array in time was adopted, with the main factor arranged in a randomized block design with four replications. The main plot was the use of supplemental irrigation and the subplots were the eight data collection time-points. The fig plants were sampled for 0, 40, 80, 120, 160, 200, 240 and 280 days after pruning (DAP). The maximum accumulation of dry matter mass and nutrients occurred between 160 and 240 DAP in both systems. Plants in the irrigated system showed greater overall accumulation of nutrients in all the organs, more prominently in the leaves, branches, and stem. The dry matter mass and nutrient accumulation was in the order stem > leaves > branches > roots > fruit in the irrigated system and branches > stem > leaves > roots > fruit in the non-irrigated system. The abscisic acid (ABA) is related to the formation of certain polyphenols, such as anthocyanin, improving the nutritional and commercial quality of the red grapes. In this study, we verified whether the exogenous application of S-ABA favors the accumulation of anthocyanin, the total phenolic compounds and the antioxidant activity of the ‘Rubi’ grape. The experiment was performed during the cycle 2014/2015 with the ‘Rubi’ vine (Vitis vinifera L.) grafted in the rootstock 420-A. The experimental design was composed of randomized blocks, with four treatments and six blocks, in a total of 24 experimental parcels, constituted of one plant each. We used the S-ABA isomer in different concentrations and times of application, 400 mg·L-1 S-ABA in the beginning of the ripening (BR); 400 mg·L-1 at BR + 200 mg·L-1 at 25 days after first application (DAFA); 400 mg·L-1at BR + 400 mg·L-1 at 25 DAFA; besides the control (0 mg·L-1). After 40 days of the first application, the samples were harvested and we verified that the S-ABA induced the accumulation of anthocyanins and total phenolic compounds in the ‘Rubi’ grape. From these results we can recommend two applications of S-ABA, 400 mg·L-1 at BR + 200 mg·L-1 at 25 DAFA.

The evaluated rootstocks were 'IAC 766', 'IAC 572', 'IAC 313' and 'IAC 571-6'. The length of the main phonological stages of the grapevine and its thermal demands were assessed during two growing seasons and expressed as days after pruning and degree-day sum, respectively. Grapevine yield and berry physicochemical characteristics were assessed during three crop seasons. 'Venus' phenological cycle and thermal demands, as well as the chemical characteristics of its grapes, varied with the climate conditions during the crop seasons. Low temperatures increased the grapevine cycle, and higher rainfall indices caused a decrease in the soluble solids of berries, as well as an increase in their titratable acidity. The 'IAC 766' and 'IAC 571-6' rootstocks promote a greater precocity to 'Venus' grapevines, and 'IAC 572' promotes a higher grapevine yield and better physicochemical characteristics of 'Venus' grapes. In view of the above, this study aimed to evaluate the thermal requirement and phenological characterization of papaya varieties cultivated under subtropical climate. It was measured the following phenological stages length: from planting to flowering (PF), from flowering to harvest (FH) and from planting to the beginning of harvest (PH), by measuring the time elapsed between each phenological phase. Female and hermaphrodite flowers were considered for measuring the growth curves of fruits by evaluating length (LF) and diameter (DF) of the fruits at 15-day intervals. The thermal requirement was measured by the accumulation of thermal sum in degree-days (DD) during different phenological phases and fruits development period. In current study conditions, it was possible to infer that Sunrise Solo variety and hybrid Tainung nº 1 are earlier, with an approximately 10-month interval between planting and the beginning of the harvest; therefore, necessitating accumulation of 1722.2 and 1798.1 degree-days, respectively. Frente ao exposto, objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar a exigência térmica e caracterização fenológica de variedades de mamoeiro cultivadas sob clima subtropical. Foi mensurado a duração dos seguintes estádios fenológicos: plantio ao florescimento (PF), florescimento à colheita e plantio ao início da colheita, através da aferição do tempo decorrido entre cada fase fenológica. As curvas de crescimento dos frutos, acompanhadas em flores femininas e hermafroditas, foram determinadas mediante avaliação do comprimento e diâmetro dos frutos em intervalos de 15 dias. Já a exigência térmica foi mensurada através do acumulo da soma térmica em graus-dia, durante as diferentes fases fenológicas e para o período de desenvolvimento dos frutos. Nas condições do presente estudo foi possível inferir que a variedade Sunrise Solo e o híbrido Tainung nº1 são mais precoces, com intervalo entre o plantio e o início da colheita de aproximadamente 10 meses, necessitando do acúmulo de 1722,2 e 1798,1 graus-dia, respectivamente. The application of plant growth regulators can promote better development of the seedlings, essential for the success of fruit growing. The current study aims to evaluate the use of plant growth regulators in fig tree seedlings ‘Roxo de Valinhos’. The experiment was carried out in a suspended nursery covered with plastic, using rooted cuttings of the cultivar Roxo de Valinhos. Four applications were made with a commercial product, known as Stimulate®, at doses of 0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 mL L-1. Using a randomized block experimental design, the study was subdivided into plots (doses X days of the last application [after 0, 7, 14 and 21]). The following traits were evaluated: stem and root length; stem diameter; root volume; leaf number; leaf area; stem, leaf and root dry mass; specific leaf area, leaf weight ratio; leaf area ratio; and chlorophyll total. Results indicated that the product promoted greater seedlings development at a dose range from 100 to 150 mL L-1. Different dose levels did not vary according to the days after product application. Furthermore, using such technique enabled seedlings of higher quality and vigour. A aplicação de reguladores vegetais pode configurar uma técnica viável para promoção do melhor desenvolvimento das mudas, imprescindível para o sucesso da fruticultura. Deste modo, objetivou-se avaliar o uso de reguladores vegetais na produção de mudas da figueira ‘Roxo de Valinhos’. O experimento foi realizado em viveiro suspenso com cobertura plástica, utilizando-se estacas enraizadas da cultivar Roxo de Valinhos. Foram realizadas quatro aplicações com o produto comercial Stimulate® nas concentrações de 0, 50, 100, 150, e 200 mL L-1. Utilizou-se o delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados com parcelas subdivididas [concentrações X épocas de avaliação (após 0, 7, 14 e 21 dias da última aplicação)]. Avaliou-se: comprimento do ramo e da maior raiz; diâmetro do ramo; volume de raízes; número de folhas e área foliar; massa seca de folhas, ramos e raízes; área específica foliar, razão de peso foliar e razão da área foliar; e teores de clorofila total. O uso do produto, nas concentrações de 100 a 150 mL L-1, promoveu maior desenvolvimento das mudas. O efeito das diferentes doses não variou em função dos dias após aplicação do produto. In this study, a vineyard trellising system supported three years old vines at a density of 6536 plants ha-1. Therefore, evaluations consisted of three pruning seasons: two winter pruning (August 2011 and September 2012) and a summer pruning (January 2012). A complete randomized block design was conducted, subdivided into plots, with five replicates, the plots represented by 5 rootstocks and subplots by pruning seasons. We evaluated bunch number per plant; bunch, berry and rachis fresh mass; berries number per bunch; soluble solid, pH and titratable acidity content in the grape must. Results showed that 'Niagara Rosada' grafted onto 'IAC 572', presented the highest bunch mass (227g), rachis fresh mass (7.5g) and berries number per bunch (66); while 'IAC 313' rootstock performed the lowest values. Moreover, 'IAC 766' and '106-8 Mgt' rootstocks presented the highest soluble solid and titratable acidity content, due to these rootstock's precocity. Furthermore, the highest ratio between soluble solid and titratable acidity was found in 'Niagara Rosada' grafted onto 'IAC 313' and 'IAC 571-6' rootstock. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2019-01-01 Choosing the best season collection of cuttings is essential to have success with propagation, due mainly to carbohydrate content, since is a source of energy for roots and shoots development. In literature, there are no papers that associate the collection season of cuttings with carbohydrate contents in figs. Therefore, the current study aimed to evaluate carbohydrate contents and season collection of cuttings to propagate 'Roxo de Valinhos' fig tree. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse; cuttings were collected in the first week of the following months: June, July, August and September. The design was in completely randomized blocks, with four replicates of 30 cuttings collected per season. The following traits were evaluated: carbohydrate content; percentage of root cuttings, bud cuttings, cuttings without bud and root; number of buds, leaves and roots per cutting; length of the largest root and bud; bud diameter; bud and root dry mass; and root volume. Results indicated high carbohydrate content in cuttings that were collected in August; therefore, the best month to collect cuttings of 'Roxo de Valinhos' fig tree in the city of São Manuel, state of São Paulo. This result is due to high percentage of rooted cuttings and better development. Furthermore, carbohydrate content mainly affects root growth; besides that, reducing sugars are the most important feature in the development of cuttings. The aim of this study is to evaluate the phenology, yield and fruit physicochemical characteristics of four persimmon cultivars (Diospyros kaki L.) in Sao Paulo’s Midwest countryside, Brazil. The persimmon cultivars studied were ‘Pomelo’, ‘Rama Forte’, ‘Fuyu’ and ‘Rubi’. The main phenological phases of persimmons trees were evaluated. Despite significant differences between cultivars in the early and intermediate stages of the plants development such as branch development, full blossom and fruiting’s onset, the time required between the fruit’s pruning and harvesting was similar among the cultivars. It could be observed that only ‘Pomelo’ persimmon trees presented male flowers. However on ‘Rubi’, ‘Fuyu’ and ‘Rama Forte’ persimmons trees were found the largest number of female flowers, fruits fixation index and number of fruits per branch. Nevertheless, there were no differences among the cultivars regarding productivity, which could be due to the persimmon fruits physical characteristics. The fruits’ diameter growth behavior was evaluated and it was observed that all cases were defined as double sigmoidal, defined by three single phases. Regarding the chemical characteristics, there were no differences among the cultivars’ pH and soluble solids content; however, in general, the ‘Pomelo’ persimmon fruit presented less titratable acidity and a higher maturation index rating. The aim of this study was to evaluate the agronomic performance and fruit quality of ‘Maca’ banana cultivar. A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of phosphorus (P) on the cultivar. The study area presents a subtropical climate, where the mean temperature is 22°C; and the mean rainfall is 1377 mm. The experiment was conducted from November 2012 to May 2014. The experiment design was totally randomized, consisting of six treatments (0, 40, 60, 80, 100 and 120 kg P2O5 ha -1 ) and seven repetitions. The results indicated that plant height, pseudo-stem diameter, number of live leaves, yield and fruit numbers per bunch increased at 51, 45, 44, 34 and 40 kg P2O5 ha -1 , respectively. The shortest harvest cycle was of 480 days at 60 kg P2O5 ha -1 . In unripe bananas, RSC improved 13% at 47 kg P2O5 ha -1 ; while the highest level of P, Ca and Mg were obtained at 74, 41 and 58 kg P2O5 ha -1 , respectively. During banana ripening, maximum fruit firmness (3.07 N) was achieved at 63 kg P2O5 ha -1 . Application of triple superphosphate fertilizer (at 34 kg P2O5 ha -1 ) increased yield, without changing physicochemical characteristics.

The yield components (number of bunches and yield per vine, as well as productivity) and the physicochemical characteristics of the bunches and berries of the eight scion-rootstock combinations were evaluated in three seasons. All data were subjected to analysis of variance and principal components analysis. The varieties ‘Isabel Precoce’ ‘BRS Cora’ and IAC 138 22 ‘Máximo’ produced high fruit yield, with the number of bunches and yield per vine similar to one another and superior to those of ‘BRS Carmem’. Significant differences occurred among varieties in the physicochemical grape characteristics. ‘Isabel Precoce’ and ‘BRS Carmem’ grapes had balanced levels of sugar and acid content, and ‘BRS Cora’ presented large bunches and berries, reaching high soluble solids content despite the high acidity. IAC 138-22 ‘Máximo’ grape also had large bunches but small berries and limited potential in the accumulation of sugars. The ‘IAC 766’ rootstock resulted in the best performance across all four varieties evaluated, showing maximum results in terms of fruit yield and physicochemical quality attributes of grapes. In Brazil, the improvement of papaya agribusiness is correlated to the estimation of genetic parameters and evaluation of agronomic descriptors; thus enabling less favourable areas for the development and implementation of papaya crops. Therefore, the current study aimed to evaluate quantitative descriptors and to estimate genetic parameters in genotypes of papaya grown under subtropical climate in the state of São Paulo. The experimental design was randomized in block. The experimental units were grouped into seven blocks of five plants each and three treatments, which consisted of three different varieties: Sunrise Solo, Tainung nº1 and local. The psychochemical properties were analysed for plant height; intersection height of first fruits; stem diameter; male, female and hermaphroditic flower percentage; fruit number per plant; production; yield; normal fruits percentage, carpeloid and pentandric fruits; pulp matter; pulp length; pulp diameter; pulp shape; pulp cavity; pulp thickness; peel performance; pulp performance; seeds performance; seeds number; soluble solids; pH; titratable acidity; ratio; technological index; ascorbic acid and reducing sugars. Furthermore, most agronomic descriptors showed high heritability; besides that, the varieties Sunrise Solo and Tainung nº1 performed the best results in Botucatu. A estimativa de parâmetros genéticos e a avaliação de descritores agronômicos do mamoeiro pode contribuir com o desenvolvimento do agronegócio do mamão no Brasil, permitindo a expansão de novos cultivos em regiões menos favoráveis para sua exploração comercial. Frente ao exposto, objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar descritores quantitativos e estimar parâmetros genéticos em genótipos de mamoeiro, cultivados em clima subtropical do estado de São Paulo. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados, com três tratamentos (variedade Sunrise Solo, híbrido Tainung nº1 e variedade local) e sete blocos, utilizando cinco plantas por parcela experimental. Foram mensuradas as seguintes caraterísticas: altura das plantas e da interseção dos primeiros frutos; diâmetro do caule; porcentagens de plantas masculinas, femininas e hermafroditas; número de frutos por planta; produção; produtividade; porcentagem de frutos normais, carpelóides e pentândricos; massa, comprimento, diâmetro, formato, diâmetro da cavidade interna e espessura da polpa dos frutos; rendimento de casca, de polpa e de sementes; número de sementes; sólidos solúveis; pH; acidez titulável; ratio; índice tecnológico; ácido ascórbico e açúcares redutores. Foi possível inferir com o estudo que há alta herdabilidade quanto à maioria dos descritores agronômicos avaliados e que os bons resultados para a variedade Sunrise Solo e o híbrido Tainung nº 1, possibilitam a indicação desses genótipos para cultivo, na região de Botucatu – SP.

The current work evaluated blackberry cultivars: Cherokee, Tupy and Xavante; raspberry cultivars: Heritage, Fallgold and Black; and the hybrid Boysenberry. All berries were grown under homogenous subtropical conditions in Brazil. Black raspberry, Cherokee and Tupy blackberry cultivars showed the highest ratio between soluble solid contents and titratable acidity, and Fallgold and Heritage raspberry showed the highest titratable acidity. Total phenolic content ranged from 2.03 to 5.33 g kg−1 fresh weight and total anthocyanin content registered values from 0.41 to 1.81 g kg−1 fresh weight. The most common phenolic acids were gallic, p-coumaric and ellagic, and for anthocyanins: cyanidin-3-glucoside and malvinidin-3-glucoside. Antioxidant capacity ranged from 14.13 to 21.51 mol equivalent trolox kg−1 fresh weight. Black raspberry, all blackberry cultivars and the Boysenberry hybrid are appropriate to be consumed fresh, while Fallgold and Heritage raspberries are recommended to the food industry. Due to their phenolic richness and antioxidant properties, these fruits are of great interest to the fresh fruit market and to pharmaceutical industries. These results could help breeders and growers when planning the cultivar selection according to their foreseeable destination. Nessas condições, a deficiência e o excesso de cobre em mudas cítricas tornou-se um sério problema para os viveiristas. Nesse cenário, realizou-se o presente trabalho com o objetivo de avaliar os efeitos da aplicação cúprica em mudas cítricas. O experimento foi realizado em viveiro comercial localizado na cidade de Botucatu/SP e consistiu na aplicação de cinco tratamentos: T1 – testemunha, T2 - oxicloreto de cobre (1,8 g L-1), T3 - óxido cuproso (500 g L-1), T4 - quelato de cobre EDTA (0,04 mL L-1) e T5 - sulfato de cobre (2,5g L-1). Após a aplicação dos tratamentos, foram realizadas avaliações a cada 30 dias, durante 5 meses, da altura média de planta (cm), diâmetro médio do caule (mm), massa de matéria seca da parte aérea e radicular (g) e teor médio de cobre nas folhas (mg kg-1) do porta enxerto de limoeiro 'Cravo' (Citrus limonia, Osbeck), nas duas primeiras avaliações e na variedade copa laranjeira 'Valência' (Citrus sinensis, Osbeck), nas três avaliações posteriores. O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado com parcelas subdividas no tempo, onde as parcelas corresponderam aos tratamentos com cobre e as subparcelas aos meses de avaliação. Independentemente da fonte de cobre utilizada houve incrementos nas variáveis de crescimento avaliadas. COPPER FERTILIZATION IN CITRIC SEEDLINGS 2 ABSTRACT Seedling production in protected nursery is the basis of the São Paulo state citrus culture, and fertilization management is one of the main pitfalls in the process. Copper deficiency and excess in citrus seedlings have become a serious concern for seedling nursery owners. Based on these considerations, the study aimed at evaluating the effects of copper fertilization on citrus seedlings. The experiment was carried out at a commercial seedling nursery in Botucatu city/SP and consisted of 5 treatments: T1 – control, T2 – copper oxyfluoride (1.8 g L-1), T3 – cupric oxide (500 g L-1), T4 – copper chelate EDTA (0.04 mL L-1) and T5 – copper sulphate (2,5g L-1). After treatment allocation, monthly evaluations were performed for 5 months for mean plant height (cm), mean stem diameter (mm), above ground and root dry matter (g) and mean copper level in the leaves (mg kg-1) of the rootstocks of the rangpur lime (Citrus limonia, Osbeck) in the two first evaluations. The three following evaluations were performed in the “Valencia” orange cultivar (Citrus sinensis, Osbeck). As mudas de Kunquat ‘Nagami’ ( Fortunella sp.), enxertadas sobre Limoeiro ‘Cravo’ ( Citrus limonia Osbeck) foram adquiridas de um viveiro comercial de citros, localizado no municipio de Jacuba-SP, com 30 dias apos a enxertia. Aos 60 dias apos a enxertia, quando as mudas de Kunquat ‘Nagami’ atingiriam altura media de 40 cm e 22 folhas, foram realizadas quatro aplicacoes do bioestimulante Stimulate ® nas seguintes concentracoes: 0, 50, 100, 150 e 200 mL L -1 de solucao. Realizaram-se avaliacoes no crescimento das mudas aos 7, 14 e 21 dias apos a ultima aplicacao de Stimulate ® . Avaliaram-se as variaveis: altura da planta, numero de folhas, massa fresca e seca da parte aerea, massa fresca e seca da raiz, comprimento da raiz principal, diâmetro do caule do porta-enxerto e do caule da copa, area foliar e o indice relativo de clorofila. Obteve-se, com a dose de 200 mL de Stimulate ® L -1 , aumento na altura da planta, no numero de folhas, no comprimento da raiz e no diâmetro da copa das mudas de Kunquat ‘Nagami’. The seedlings of ‘Nagami’ Kunquat ( Fortunella sp) grafted onto ‘Rangpur’ lime ( Citrus limonia Osbeck) were from a commercial seedling nursery of citrus in Jacuba city-SP and were at 30 days after grafting. At 60 days after grafting, when the seedlings reached 40 cm mean height and 22 leaves, a total of four applications of Stimulate ® plant growth regulator were performed in the following concentrations: 0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 mL L -1 of solution. Seedling growth evaluations were performed at 7, 14 and 21 days after the last Stimulate ® application. The following variables were evaluated: plant height, number of leaves, above ground fresh and dry matter, fresh and dry matter of roots, length of roots, diameter of the rootstock and canopy stems, leaf area and the relative chlorophyll index. The application of 200 mL Stimulate ® L -1 in ‘Nagami’ Kunquat seedlings led to an increase in plant height, number of leaves, root length and stem diameter of canopies. It is about time we analysed their productive behavior in these areas, as well as their phenological performance. This study aimed to evaluate: phenological cycles, thermal time and growth curves of mango fruit cultivars in subtropical conditions. For this study we used the following cultivars: Espada Vermelha, Keitt and Palmer. All the experiments were done at UNESP experimental farm in Sao Manuel (SP), during the agricultural cycle from 2012 to 2013. It was selected 15 branches in each plant, which provided 150 per cultivar. It was determined the number of days of phenological cycles of flowering to fruit ripening, as well as the total number of days to flowering and harvesting. The thermal time was evaluated to each phenological cycle and expressed in accumulation of degree-days. The measurement of the longitudinal diameters (LD) and transverse diameters (TD) of the fruitwere performed in a 12 day’s intervals, from the tenth day after the flowers anthesis, to evaluate the growth curve. Based on the data, it was found that Keitt cultivar requires more days for the fruit to reach physiological maturity and greater accumulation of degree-days to complete its production cycle. The growth curves of the three varieties of fruits have a simple sigmoidal model in function of the days after anthesis. The carbohydrates translocation and consequently growth and production of fig tree (Ficuscarica L.) vary according to the different management on cultivation conditions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes in the levels and total carbohydrates accumulation together with growth and “Roxo de Valinhos” fig trees production onimplementation of orchards in initial phase, cultivated with and without irrigation. We adopted a factorial arrangement (2 x 7) with four repetitions distributed in installments (with and without irrigation) subdivided in time (collect time). Destructive analyzes were performed at 40, 80, 120, 160, 200, 240 and 280 days after pruning (DAP) and are measured: stem diameter and branch, stem length and branch, number of leaves, internodes and fruit. Subsequently, the plant parts were sectioned to obtain the leaf area, length and roots volume, fresh and dry matter weight. The number, weight and total productivity of fruits were evaluated. The media of all growth attributes and production characteristics were higher in treatments with water irrigation. The total carbohydrate content was higher at 120 and 160 DAP and the carbohydrates accumulation was increasing for most institutions over the plants development, except for the leaves that showed a decrease in the levels at 160 DAP. The fruits showed greater carbohydrates accumulation in relation to the other evaluated organs.

In subtropical or tropical conditions, the insufficient winter chill accumulation is often a limiting factor to break the dormancy of temperate-climate species such as the blackberry, which requires using products to help break dormancy. This study evaluates the efficacy of compounds in breaking dormancy of blackberry and its consequent influence on phenology and crop yields. The experiment was conducted in S?o Manuel, State of S?o Paulo, Brazil, in the 2011/2012 production cycle. The plants used were two-year-old “Tupy” blackberry (Rubus spp.), with 0.6 × 4.0 m spacing (4.166 plants·ha-1). Pruning was performed in August, followed by the application of these treatments: control (water); hydrogen cyanamide (Dormex?); nitrogen fertilizer (Erger?) and mineral oil (Assist?). The concentrations of each compound used were: 2.0%, 4.0%, 6.0% and 8.0%. The compounds used influenced the budding, flowering and fruit harvest stages, in addition to providing increased yields depending on the concentration used. For hydrogen cyanamide the recommended concentration is of 4.2% and 5.4% for nitrogen fertilizer; doses above these concentrations may cause phytotoxic effects. For mineral oil the dose recommended is of 8.0%.

Mango is quite popular among tropical fruits, and has traits of a fast-expanding market. There is a huge variety of mango cultivars and their potential should be studied in order to be introduced in new producing regions with favourable edaphoclimatic characteristics for planting. The current study aimed to evaluate mango productive performance under subtropical conditions in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The experiment was conducted with 'Espada Vermelha', 'Keitt' and 'Palmer' cultivars grafted onto rootstock 'Espada' over three crop cycles 2012-2013, 2013-2014 and 2014-2015. The experimental design was a randomized complete block, consisting of 3x3 factorial design, in which the first factor corresponds to the cultivars and the second factor to the evaluated crop cycles, with 10 replications and one plant per plot. The following variables were evaluated: number of fruits per panicle, number of fruits per plant, panicles percentage to the full aborted fruits, fruit fresh weight, production, yield, canopy volume, production efficiency and crop seasonality. Data analysis by Tukey test and Pearson´s correlation coefficients. Among the evaluated cultivars, Palmer has stood out with the best productive performance under the experiment conditions in the three evaluated crop cycles. The seasonal availability of cultivars should be explored so that there are fruit productions over a longer period of time. Correlations among productive traits varies according to the cultivar. A manga é uma das frutas tropicais mais apreciadas e seu mercado está em expansão. Existe uma grande variedade de cultivares de mangueira e seu potencial deve ser estudado, sendo importante a introdução do cultivo desta frutífera em novas regiões produtoras, principalmente em locais que apresentem características edafoclimáticas favoráveis para seu cultivo. Desta forma, objetivou-se com este trabalho, avaliar o desempenho produtivo de três cultivares de mangueira nas condições subtropicais do estado de São Paulo, Brasil. O experimento foi conduzido em três ciclos agrícolas, (2012-2013, 2013-2014 e 2014-2015) com as cultivares Espada Vermelha, Keitt e Palmer enxertadas sobre a cultivar Espada. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados com esquema fatorial 3 x 3, em que o primeiro fator corresponde às cultivares e o segundo fator aos ciclos agrícolas avaliados. Utilizaram-se 10 repetições e uma planta por parcela. As seguintes variáveis foram avaliadas: número de frutos por panícula, número de frutos por planta, porcentagem de panículas com abortamento total de frutos, massa fresca do fruto, produção, produtividade, volume da copa, eficiência produtiva e sazonalidade de colheita. Os dados obtidos foram analisados por meio do teste Tukey e correlação de Pearson. Dentre as cultivares avaliadas a Palmer destaca-se com o melhor desempenho produtivo independente do ciclo agrícola avaliado. As correlações entre as características produtivas avaliadas variam conforme a cultivar.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar as características físico-químicas e sensoriais dos frutos de quatro variedades de figueira (Colar, San Antonio, Cuello de Dama Negro e Tiberio) cultivadas no sudeste da Espanha. Para este estudo foram utilizados figos oriundos de uma área experimental da Escola Politécnica Superior de Orihuela da Universidade Miguel Hernández de Elche/Espanha. Os frutos foram avaliados no Laboratório de Pós-Colheita da Universidade Politécnica de Cartagena/Espanha. Foram mensuradas características como firmeza, pH, sólidos solúveis, açúcares, polifenóis totais, capacidade antioxidante e a análise sensorial dos frutos de quatro variedades de figueiras. Foram considerados 4 tratamentos (variedades) e 3 repetições por tratamento, para cada repetição foram utilizados 5 frutos. Os frutos da variedade Tiberio mostraram menor firmeza e baixa qualidade sensorial, indicando menor aceitabilidade. PHYSICO-CHEMICAL ATTRIBUTES AND ACCEPTABILITY OF FIG FRUITS CULTIVATED IN SPAIN ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to analyze the morphological, physicochemical and sensory characteristics of four fig fruits varieties grown in southeast Spain. For this study were used fig fruits coming from the experimental area of Orihuela Polytechnic School, University Miguel Hernández of Elche/Spain. After harvesting the fruits were brought to the Postharvest laboratory of Cartagena Polytechnic University/ Spain, where the weight characterization, longitudinal and equatorial diameter, ostiole diameter (morphological), consistency, pH, soluble solids, sugars, total polyphenols and antioxidant capacity (physico-chemical) , ,) was performed, and sensory analysis of four fig fruits varieties (Colar, San Antonio, Cuello de Dama Negro and Tiberio). The experiment consisted of 4 treatments (varieties) and 3 replicates per treatment, being 20 fruits for the morphological variables and 5 fruit was used for the physico-chemical variables. When observed significant differences between these treatments were subjected to the Tukey test at 5% probability. The Colar variety showed the best morphology, but not different from the other varieties in relation to chemical and sensory characteristics. The variety of Tiberio fruits showed less firmness and low sensory quality, indicating lower acceptability. Peach trees are temperate climate fruit trees most planted in subtropical and tropical regions. This advance of the peach crop is mainly due to the introduction of less cold-demanding new cultivar varieties and which require using less specific techniques, such as plant growth regulators and pruning. Within this context, the objective of this work was to evaluate phenological aspects and the yield potential of the cultivars Granada, Aurora-1, Dourado-2, Douradao, Big-Aurora, Marli and Chiripa, grafted onto the “Okinawa” rootstock, planted in the region of Sao Manuel-SP, during two cultivation cycles. The experimental design used was a completely randomized design with 7 treatments and 5 replicates, with the experimental unit represented by two plants.”Granada” had early harvest in mid-September, and “Chiripa” in late November and early December, in which the former was the early-ripening cultivar and the latter was the late-ripening one. “Aurora-1” and “Dourado-2”, had the highest yield values, 18.95 and 16.57 t·ha-1 respectively, followed by “Big-Aurora” with yield values of 12.13 t·ha-1. For subtropical regions, such as S&atildeo Manuel-SP, less cold-demanding cultivars are recommended, such as Aurora-1, Dourado-2 and Big-Aurora. The planting of early- and late-ripening varieties, such as Granada and Chiripa, respectively, is an interesting alternative for producers wanting to scale their production.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar as características físico-químicas, bem como a aceitação sensorial de frutos de genótipos de bananeira em Botucatu/SP. As características avaliadas foram: textura, pH, acidez titulável, sólidos solúveis, açúcares redutores totais, amido, teores de potássio e aceitação sensorial. Para a determinação das análises foram escolhidos 5 frutos da 2a penca do cacho. O delineamento adotado foi o inteiramente casualisado, com 11 tratamentos (genótipos) e cinco repetições. Para cada repetição foram utilizados 5 frutos. Conforme os tratamentos empregados, no grupo AAA, o cultivar Caipira apresentou os maiores teores de potássio (7,24 g.kg-1), contudo menor aceitação, evidenciada pela avaliação global (AVG), sendo os maiores teores de sólidos solúveis observados na bananeira (6,33 ºBrix). O cultivar Prata Zulu do grupo AAB destacou-se em relação aos demais cultivares do mesmo grupo, apresentando maiores teores de açúcares (0,49%), amido (34,40%) e baixa acidez (0,12% de ácido málico). Para o grupo AAAB, ‘Fhia 18’ apresentou maiores teores de açúcares (0,60%) e ‘Prata Graúda’ foi a mais aceita entre todos os grupos genômicos.Palavra-chave: Musa spp, genótipos, qualidade, aceitação sensorial.PHYSICAL-CHEMICAL CHARACTERIZATION AND SENSORIAL EVALUATION OF BANANA FRUITS ABSTRACTThis study aimed to evaluate the physical-chemical characteristics as well as sensorial acceptance of banana fruits genotypes in Botucatu/SP. The characteristics evaluated were: texture, PH, titratable acidity, soluble solids, total sugar, starch, potassium contents and sensorial acceptance. For the analysis were selected five fruits from the second bunch. The experimental design was completely randomized. There were eleven treatments (genotypes), five repetitions and two usable plants per plot. According to results in the AAA group, the ‘Caipira’ cultivar presented the highest potassium levels (7.24 g.kg-1) and the lowest sensorial acceptance and the ‘Nam’ cultivar showed the highest soluble solids contents (6.33 ºBrix). In the AAB group the ‘Prata Zulu’ cultivar stood out for its high sugar (0.49%), starch contents (34.40%) and low acidity (0.12 % of malic acid). For the AAAB group the ‘Fhia 18’ cultivar had the highest sugar content (0.60%) and the ‘Prata Graúda’ cultivar had the highest sensorial acceptance levels of all genomic groups.Keywords: Musa spp., quality genotypes, sensorial acceptance. Pruning guava trees at different times is an important management tool that allows year-long staggering of fruit production. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the phenological characteristics, yield and fruit quality of the 'Paluma' guava tree at different pruning times in Botucatu, SP. The study used a completely randomized design with four treatments, four replicates and a useful experimental plot plant. The treatments consisted of four different pruning times, August 27, September 11, September 26 and October 11. The following phenological phases were evaluated: branch establishment, flowering, early fruiting, fruit ripening and harvesting. It was determined the number of flower buds, fixed fruits and fixation index fruit were determined. The fruit growth curve was obtained by measuring the transverse and longitudinal diameter. At the time of harvest, the number of fruits per plant, yield and productivity were measured. In the harvested fruits, the fresh mass, the transverse and longitudinal diameter, the flesh and core thickness, the flesh and core mass, soluble solids, titratable acidity and pH were determined. The 'Paluma' guava trees pruned in August showed higher phenological stage durations than the other pruning times; however, those pruned in early September showed higher fixation index fruit, fruit yield and better physical characteristics. The guava trees pruned in August showed lower titratable acidity values and higher soluble solids/titratable acidity ratio. RESUMO A poda da goiabeira em diferentes épocas é uma importante prática de manejo que permite a produção escalonada dos frutos ao longo do ano. Nesse contexto, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar as características fenológicas, produtivas e de qualidade de frutos da goiabeira 'Paluma' em função de diferentes épocas de poda em Botucatu, SP. Foi utilizado o delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com quatro tratamentos, quatro repetições e uma planta útil por parcela experimental. Os tratamentos consistiram em quatro diferentes épocas de poda de goiabeiras 'Paluma', sendo elas: 27 de agosto, 11 de setembro, 26 de setembro e 11 de outubro. Foram avaliadas as seguintes fases fenológicas: estabelecimento de ramos, florescimento, início da frutificação, maturação dos frutos e colheita. Foi determinado o número de botões florais, número de frutos fixados e o índice de pegamento de frutos. A curva de crescimento de frutos foi obtida através da medição semanal do diâmetro transversal e longitudinal dos frutos. Na ocasião da colheita foi avaliado o número de frutos por planta, a produção e a produtividade. Nos frutos colhidos determinou-se a massa fresca; diâmetro transversal, longitudinal e sua relação; espessura do mesocarpo - polpa, e do endocarpo - miolo; massa de polpa e miolo e suas relações; teor de sólidos solúveis, acidez titulável e sua relação e pH. As goiabeiras 'Paluma' podadas no mês de agosto apresentaram maior duração das fases fenológicas que as demais épocas de poda, no entanto juntamente com aquelas podadas no início de setembro apresentaram maiores índice de pegamento de frutos e produção e melhores características físicas dos frutos. As goiabeiras podadas em agosto apresentaram ainda, menores valores de acidez titulável e maiores valores na relação sólidos solúveis/acidez titulável.

Caracterizou-se fisico-quimicamente partes do fruto e semente da Bertholletia excelsa . No norte de MT coletou-se frutos do chao que foram beneficiados e classificados em: Mesocarpo jovem (MJ); Mesocarpo velho (MV); Semente jovem (SJ); Semente velha (SV); Amendoa (A); Resquicio floral (RF); Tegumento da semente (TS) e Exocarpo (EX). Analisou-se quimicamente macronutrientes: Nitrogenio (N); Fosforo (P); Potassio (K); Calcio (Ca); Magnesio (Mg) e Enxofre (S); micronutrientes: Boro (B); Cobre (Cu); Manganes (Mn) e Zinco (Zn); e analisou-se propriedades fisicas: porcentagem de Nitrogenio e Carbono; relacao C/N; densidade; pH e condutividade eletrica. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado com quatro repeticoes, sendo cada parte do fruto um tratamento. Procedeu-se a analise da variância e ao teste de Tukey (p > 0,05), para N, P e K calculou-se a correlacao de Pearson a 95%. Amendoa concentrou mais N, P, Mg, S e Zn; e exocarpo mais K, Ca, B e Mn. A relacao C/N foi menor na semente, no embriao, no exocarpo e no resquicio floral. Entre as partes do fruto ha alta correlacao direta de N entre SV/EX, MJ/RF, EX/RF, EX/MJ, SJ/RF, SJ/MF, SJ/EX SV/TS; de P entre SV/A, SJ/TS, A/TS, A/SJ e de K entre; e ha alta correlacao inversa de N entre MJ/RF, EX/MV; de P entre SJ/A, A/EX e de K entre TS/MV. Potassio e Nitrogenio sao mais exportados para o fruto, o mesocarpo velho tem maior relacao C/N e o embriao a menor. PHYSICO-CHEMICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF FRUIT’S CASTANHEIRA OF BRAZIL ABSTRACT Bertholletia excelsa’s fruit and seed were physic-chemically characterized. At north of Mato Grosso, Brazil, fallen fruits were collected, processed and classified in: Young Mesocarp (MJ); Old Mesocarp (MV); Young Seed (SJ); Old Seed (SV); Almond (A); Floral Remaining (RF); Seed Coat (TS) and Exocarp (EX). Macro and micronutrients were analyzed: Nitrogen (N); Phosphorus (P); Potassium (K); Calcium (Ca); Magnesium (Mg); Sulfur (S); Boron (B); Copper (Cu); Manganese (Mn) and Zinc (Zn). Physical properties were also analyzed: Percentage of Nitrogen and Carbon; C/N ratio; Density; pH and Electrical conductivity. The experimental design was completely randomized with four replication, and each piece of fruit was considered a treatment. The results were submitted to analysis of variance and Tukey test (p > 0.05), for N, P and K was calculated Pearson correlation (95%). Almond concentrate more N, P, Mg, S, and Mn. C/N ratio was lower in seed, in embryo, in exocarp and in floral remaining. High direct correlations are for Nitrogen: SV/EX; SV/TS, for Phosphorus: SV/A; SJ/TS; A/TS; A/SJ and for Potassium: MJ/RF; EX/RF; EX/MJ; SJ/RF; SJ/MF; SJ/EX. High indirect correlations occur for Nitrogen: MJ/RF; EX/MV, for Phosphorus: SJ/A; A/EX and for Potassium: TS/MV. The proper citrus cutting choice is considered of basic importance for a healthy and productive citriculture. Substrates composed of organic materials are widely used for the production of citrus seedlings but this can lead to plant copper deficiency, mainly caused by substrate high chelating properties. Copper is an essential heavy metal and is involved in many different plant physiological processes. This experiment was carried out in order to evaluate the behavior of ‘Rangpur lime’ lemon rootstock ( Citrus limonia Osbeck) grafted with cv. ‘Valencia’ ( Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck), when treated with different copper formulations, as cupric oxychloride (50% Cu — Novartis Biociencias™), cuprous oxide (32.8% Cu — Yara Vita™), chelated copper (5% Cu — Stoller™) and copper sulphate (25% Cu — Microsal™) analyzing the activity of peroxidase (POD) and the total content of phenols. The different copper formulations did not show significant differences about plant height, diameter, leaf and root dry weight. The comparison among copper treatments shows that cuprous oxide promoted the antioxidant system (POD activity and phenolic content) while chelated copper was not effective.

Roxo de Valinhos plants in the reproductive stage. A fig tree leaf considered adult was enriched with 13CO 2 for 30 minutes in a controlled atmosphere and the respective plants were collected after 6, 24, 48, 72, 120, 168 and 360 hours of enrichment. After the specified times, the plants parts (apical meristem, leaves, shoots, stem and root system) were evaluated to characterize the natural and enrichment isotopes in a mass spectrometer of isotopic reason. Naturally, the plant presented values of relative enrichment of δ 13C -27.92‰ (isotopic reference). The plant presented concomitant vegetative growth and reproductive stage, showing predominance in the 13C allocation in the meristems areas, followed by the reproductive organs, having the root system as the main reserve organ. Foram avaliadas características de crescimento, tais como altura de planta, circunferência do pseudocaule, número de folhas e número de dias entre o florescimento e a colheita. Estas medidas foram realizadas na emissão da inflorescência. Foram mensuradas também as características de produção, como peso do cacho, número de frutos, peso médio dos frutos, produtividade, número de pencas; peso, número, comprimento e diâmetro dos frutos da 2a penca. O delineamento adotado foi o inteiramente casualisado, com 11 tratamentos (genótipos), cinco repetições e duas plantas úteis por parcela experimental. Os genótipos que apresentaram melhor desempenho agronômico, dentro de cada grupo genômico, foram 'Grand Naine'(AAA), 'Thap Maeo' (AAB) e 'Fhia 01' (AAAB). The objective of this research was to evaluate the growth characteristics and the productive potential genotypes of banana tree in Botucatu/SP. It was evaluated growth characteristics such as plant height, pseudostem circumference, number of leaves, number of days between flowering and harvest, measured at the flowering time. It was also measured production characteristics, such as bunch weight, number fruits, average weight of the fruits, productivity, number of hands and weight, number, length and diameter of the 2nd bunch. The experimental design was completely randomized with 11 treatments (genotypes), five replications and two plants per plot. The genotypes that showed the better agronomic performance within each genomic group were 'Grand Naine'(AAA), 'Thap Maeo' (AAB) e 'Fhia 01' (AAAB). O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado, com quatro tratamentos e dez repetições, com uma planta útil por parcela experimental, completamente rodeada por quatro plantas na bordadura. Os tratamentos corresponderam aos seguintes meses de poda: T1: sem poda (testemunha), T2: poda em agosto, T3: poda em setembro e T4: poda em outubro. As características avaliadas foram: número, peso médio, diâmetros longitudinal e transversal dos frutos, produção por planta, produtividade, teores de sólidos solúveis (SS), acidez titulável (AT), relação SS/AT e pH. Com relação ao número de dias entre o início e o final das colheitas (período produtivo), observou-se que a poda, independentemente da época, favoreceu o aumento do intervalo de produção. As goiabeiras submetidas à poda em agosto apresentaram maiores valores de número médio de frutos (385) e de produção por planta (58,82 kg planta-1), diferindo das outras épocas. Os teores de sólidos solúveis, acidez titulável, pH e relação SS/AT dos frutos não foram influenciados pelas épocas de realização da poda. The aim of this work was to evaluate the yield and fruit quality of the 'Paluma' guava subjected to drastic pruning, in different months, at São Manuel Experimental Farm FCA/UNESP, Botucatu Campus-SP, Brazil. The experiment was carried out in a complete randomized design with four treatments and 10 replications, with one plant per plot. The treatments consisted of: T1: no pruning, T2: pruning in August, T3: pruning in September and T4: pruning in October. The following characteristics were measured: number of fruits, yield per tree, weight of fruits, longitudinal and transversal diameters, total soluble solid content (SS), titratable acidity (TA), SS/TA and pH. Regarding the number of days between the beginning and end of the harvest (productive period), the pruning, regardless of the time, increased the harvest period when compared with non-pruned plants (control). The guava plants pruned in August showed higher number of fruits (385) and yield per plant (58.82 kg / plant), differing from the other pruning times. The total soluble solid contents, titratable acidity, pH and SS/TA of the fruits were not influenced by pruning times. The present work aimed at evaluating the effects of cattle manure fertilization on the growth and yield of fig trees. The cultivar 'Roxo de Valinhos' was used. One-, two-, three- and four-year-old trees were treated with cattle manure containing 0, 25, 50, 75, 100, 125 and 150% of the recommended nitrogen level per plant. The experiment was carried out using randomized blocks with 7 treatments, 5 replicates and 5 plants per experimental plot. The evaluated characteristics were: plant height, stem diameter, secondary branch length and diameter, yield per plant (kg plant -1 ), besides some quality characteristics of fruits such as pH, titratable acidity, soluble solids and texture. Manure application enhanced plant growth and fruit production. Significant differences were observed only for soluble solids content, pH and texture, which varied according to the crop cycle. After four crop cycles (2002/03, 2003/04, 2004/05 and 2005/06), the best results (about 5.0 kg of fruits per plant) were obtained with 100% of the recommended nitrogen dose, which corresponded to 14.3 kg of cattle manure per plant, in the last crop cycle (2005/2006).

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o desempenho propagativo de estacas semilenhosas de variedades de figueira, com o uso de ácido indolbutírico. As variedades avaliadas foram Roxo de Valinhos, White Genova, PI – 189 e Troiano e a dosagem empregada do ácido indolbutírico foi 2000 mg L-1. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente ao acaso, em esquema fatorial 4 x 2 (variedades x com e sem aplicação do regulador vegetal), com cinco repetições e dez estacas por parcela experimental. Foram avaliadas a porcentagem de estacas vivas, de estacas enraizadas e de estacas brotadas, número de brotos, comprimento da maior raiz (cm), número de folhas, volume da raiz (cm3), peso seco da raiz (mg) e peso seco das folhas (mg). As estacas que não receberam a aplicação do regulador vegetal tiveram maior porcentagem de estacas vivas, enraizadas e brotadas, com exceção das variedades Roxo de Valinhos e Troiano, que não apresentaram diferença na aplicação. Mediante esses resultados, foi possível concluir que não é recomendado o uso do ácido indolbutírico para essas variedades, na época de coleta das estacas correspondente ao mês de agosto.PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Ficus carica L., propagação, regulador de crescimento FIG TREE VARIETIES CUTTINGS ROOTING USING INDOLEBUTYRIC ACID ABSTRACT: The present study aimed to evaluate the propagative performance of fig trees cuttings with application of indolebutyric acid (IBA). The evaluated varieties were “Roxo of Valinhos, White Genova, PI -189 and Troiano and the dosage of indolebutyric acid used was 2000 mg L-1. The experimental design used was entirely random, in factorial scheme 4 x 2 (varieties x with or without application of plant regulator), with five replications and ten cuttings per plot. It was evaluated the percentage of live cuttings, rooted cuttings and sprouted cuttings, number of shoots, length of the largest root (cm), number of leaves, root volume (cm3), root dry weight (mg) and leaves dry weight (mg). The cuttings that did not receive treatment with indolebutyric acid had higher percentage of live, rooted and sprouted cuttings, except for Roxo of Valinhos” and Troiano varieties, which showed no difference among treatments . Based on the results, it is possible to conclude that the use of indolebutyric acid for such varieties is not recommended in August, month of cuttings harvest in this study. Trabalhos de pesquisa com adubação orgânica e nutrição mineral da figueira (Ficus carica L.) são escassos em todo o mundo e particularmente, no Brasil. O experimento teve como objetivo avaliar os efeitos da adubação orgânica com esterco de curral na produção e produtividade da figueira 'Roxo de Valinhos' em Botucatu-SP, nos ciclos de produção de 2002/03, 2003/04, 2004/05 e 2005/06. As plantas com idade de um, dois, três e quatro anos receberam os tratamentos com doses de esterco de curral correspondentes a: testemunha (sem adubação), 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%, 125% e 150% da dose recomendada de N para a cultura. As variáveis avaliadas foram número, peso e diâmetro médio dos frutos, produção por planta e produtividade. A aplicação de esterco de curral aumentou a produtividade, produção e número de frutos, havendo poucas alterações nas dimensões dos mesmos. Após os quatro anos de aplicação do esterco de curral, obtiveram-se melhores resultados com 76 a 124% de da dose de N recomendada para a cultura da figueira. Fertilization using organic compounds is complementary to chemical fertilization, being essential to integrated fruit production. Reports on fig tree (Ficus carica L.) organic fertilization and mineral nutrition are worldwide scarce, especially in Brazil. This experiment aimed to evaluate the effects of cattle manure fertilization on the yield and productivity of the fig tree 'Roxo de Valinhos' in Botucatu, São Paulo State, Brazil, during the 2002/03, 2003/04, 2004/05 and 2005/06 crop cycles. Plants aged one, two, three and four year olds received the following cattle manure treatments: control (no fertilizer), 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%, 125% and 150% of the recommended N level for this crop. The evaluated variables were: fruit number, weight and mean diameter, plant yield and productivity. The application of cattle manure increased productivity, yield and fruit number, slightly affecting fruit dimensions. After four years of cattle manure application, the best results were obtained with 76 to 124% of the N level recommended for the fig crop. 'Nam' apresentou menor porte e ciclo, porém baixos valores produtivos. No grupo AAB, 'Prata-Zulu' apresentou maior circunferência do pseudocaule, boas características produtivas, porém ciclo longo e porte maior. 'Thap maeo' destacou-se por apresentar boas características de produção. 'Prata-Anã' apresentou porte reduzido, menor ciclo, porém não apresentou bom desempenho produtivo. 'FHIA 01', no grupo AAAB, apresentou maiores valores na maioria das características avaliadas. Pode concluir-se que 'Grande Naine' se destacou no grupo AAA, 'Thap maeo' no grupo AAB e 'FHIA 01' no grupo AAAB. Regarding to the group AAB, 'Prata Zulu' showed the biggest pseudostem circumference, good productive characteristics, but it had the longest cycle and the highest height. O objetivo foi avaliar o efeito de bioestimulante nas características morfológicas e físico-químicas dos cachos de uva 'Niagara Rosada'. Os tratamentos consistiram na pulverização dos cachos com o bioestimulante nas doses de 0, 5, 10, 15 e 20 mg L-1, 25 dias após o pleno florescimento. O delineamento estatístico utilizado foi em blocos ao acaso com cinco repetições, e parcelas constituídas por 3 cachos. Analisou-se a massa fresca, comprimento e largura dos cachos e bagos, massa fresca do engaço, número de bagos por cacho, diâmetro do pedicelo, teor de sólidos solúveis totais, acidez titulável e o pH. Concluiu-se que o bioestimulante promoveu aumento linear no comprimento do cacho, aumento quadrático no diâmetro do pedicelo e um decréscimo linear no teor de sólidos solúveis totais. The experiment was made during august until dezember/2004 period, in grape orchard of 'Niagara Rosada' located at Pratânea region, São Paulo, Brazil. The research had as purpose to study the effects of plant growth regulator (Stimulate) on morphological and physical-chemical characteristics of 'Niagara Rosada' grape. The clusters were sprayed with plant growth regulator solution at 0, 5, 10, 15 e 20mg L-1, 25 days after flowering. The experimental design was at randomized blocks with five replications and tree clusters per parcels. It was evaluated: the fresh weight of clusters and rachis, pedicel diameter, total soluble solids contents, titratable acid and pH. The plant growth regulator spraying increased the clusters length and pedicel diameter and decreased the soluble solids contents. Foram avaliadas as seguintes características de desenvolvimento, no primeiro ciclo de produção: número de dias do plantio à floração e da mesma à colheita, número de rebentos (filhos) emitidos até o surgimento da inflorescência e na época da colheita, número de folhas ativas na época do aparecimento da inflorescência e da colheita, e características de rendimento, como peso médio do cacho, ráquis, penca e fruto, número médio de frutos por penca e cacho, comprimento e diâmetro médio dos frutos. Também foi avaliada a incidência de pragas e doenças. Foi empregado o delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com 2 tratamentos, 15 repetições e 5 plantas úteis por parcela experimental. As duas cultivares foram caracterizadas pelos valores das estatísticas descritivas, média e desvio-padrão, para as características de interesse no experimento. Foram estabelecidas possíveis correlações entre medidas de desenvolvimento e produção. As duas cultivares apresentaram ciclo do plantio até a colheita de 574 dias para 'Prata-anã' e 567 dias para 'Maçã', sendo que o ciclo produtivo foi maior na 'Prata-anã'. Não houve problemas de pragas e doenças em todo o ciclo de produção, nas duas cultivares avaliadas. The experiment evaluated the agronomic characteristics of 'Prata-anã' and 'Maçã' banana plants, in the São Manuel region of São Paulo state. In the first crop cycle, the number of days from planting to inflorescence and from inflorescence to harvest; the number of shoots until the appearance of inflorescence and during the harvest period; active leaves number at inflorescence appearance and during the harvest period. Were evaluated yield parameters: like average weight of bunch, hand, rachis and fruit; average fruit number per hand and bunch; average fruit diameter and length. Incidences of plague diseases, as well as their severity were also evaluated. Delineation was totally at random, with 2 treatments, 15 replications and 5 useful plants per experimental plot. Both cultivars were characterized by values of descriptive average statistics and standard deviation, for characteristic interests. Number of days from planting to harvest was similar for both 'Prata-anã' and 'Maçã', 574 and 567 days respectively. Banana plants showed good phytosanitary quality throughout the whole cycle. Como adubo orgânico, utilizou-se do esterco de curral curtido nas proporções de 50%, 100%, 150% e 200% da dosagem recomendada para a cultura), além da testemunha. O experimento foi conduzido em Botucatu-SP, num Nitossolo Vermelho. Avaliaram-se o comprimento e o diâmetro dos ramos, o número, o diâmetro e a massa dos frutos por planta, o rendimento de polpa, o pH, a acidez (g ácido cítrico/100g de fruto), o teor de sólidos solúveis totais (°Brix) e a relação SST/ATT (Ratio). Os melhores resultados foram obtidos na dosagem de 100% (5kg de esterco planta-1). Neste tratamento, verificou-se melhor qualidade, maior número de frutos e maior produção por planta. It was evaluated the effects of the organic fertilization in development, production and fruits quality of sweet passion fruit (Passiflora alata Dryand). As an organic fertilizer, it was used cattle manure (50%, 100%, 150% and 200% of the recommended dose for the culture) and the control treatment. The experiment was conduced in Botucatu/SP, in a Red Nitosoil. It was evaluated length and diameter of the branches, number of fruits, fruits diameter, fruits weigh, pulp production, pH, acidity (g citric acid/100g of fruit), total soluble solids (°Brix) and the relation SST/ATT (Ratio). As estacas foram uniformizadas, com 25 cm de comprimento e 4 folhas cortadas pela metade. Cerca de 2,5 cm da base das mesmas foi mergulhado nos tratamentos: H2O; Boro 150 µg/ml; IBA 5.000 ppm, IBA 2.000 ppm; IBA 5.000 ppm + Boro 150 µg/ml; IBA 2.000 ppm + Boro 150 µg/ml; NAA 3.000 ppm; NAA 1.500 ppm; NAA 3.000 ppm + Boro 150 µg/ml; NAA 1.500 ppm + Boro 150 µ/g/ml. A estaquia foi realizada no mês de setembro (Hemisfério sul), sendo que as estacas foram colocadas em bandejas de isopor, tendo como substrato vermiculita e mantidas sob nebulização intermitente. Os resultados obtidos permitiram concluir que o IBA 5.000 ppm por 1 minuto foi o tratamento mais efetivo, proporcionando 83,33% de estacas enraizadas em 120 dias, enquanto o tratamento testemunha (H2O), apresentou somente 16,67% de estacas enraizadas. The effects of exogen auxins and boric add were studied on lychee (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) cuttings. Cuttings were standardized to twenty-five cm length, with four leaves, cut in half. The bases of the cuttings were dipped of 2,5 cm in water solutions, resulting in the following treatments: H2O; Boron 150 µg/ml; IBA 5,000 ppm; IBA 2,000 ppm; IBA 5,000 ppm plus boron 150 µg/ml; IBA 2,000 ppm plus boron 150 µg/ml; NAA 3,000 ppm; NAA 1,500 ppm; NAA 3,000 ppm plus boron 150 µg/ml; NAA 1,500 ppm plus boron 150 µg/ml. Cutting was performed in September (southern hemisphere) and the cuttings were place in styrofoam trays, using vermiculite as substratum and kept under intermittent mist It was concluded that 5,000 ppm IBA for one minute was the best treatment to improve rooting (83,33%), while the control (H2O) showed only 16,67% of rooted cuttings. The production of quality seedlings is important for the crop cycle and the main propagation type is by the air layering technique, which can be enhanced by using different substrates and plant growth regulators. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the use of a biostimulant and substrate types in the propagation of litchi tree by air layering. The experiment was installed in a commercial area in the city of Mogi Mirim, SP, Brazil and conducted in a randomized block design with a 5x2 factorial with four replications. The treatments consisted of five Stimulate® biostimulant concentrations (0, 3, 6, 9, and 12 ml L-1) and two substrate types (Plantmax® and earthworm humus). After 120 days, the root length (cm), number of roots, calloused and rooted layers percentage (%), root fresh and dry mass (g) and root volume (cm3) were evaluated. Based on the results, it was found that the concentrations of 6.1 and 6.9 ml L-1 promoted greater success in litchi tree propagation and that the layers can be produced on both evaluated substrates.
