Orange spiny whitefly, Aleurocanthus spiniferus Quaintance, is a native pest of citrus in tropical Asia. In the early 1920s, pest outbreak infestation levels caused Japan to begin a biological control program. Primarily, orange spiny whitefly affects host plants by sucking the sap but it also causes indirect damage by producing honeydew and subsequently promoting the growth of sooty mold. Sooty mold is a black fungus that grows on honeydew. Heavy infestations of orange spiny whitefly, or other honeydew-producing insects such as scales, mealybugs, aphids, and other whitefly species, can cause sooty mold to completely cover the leaf surface and negatively affect photosynthesis. A check list of whiteflies in Croatia contains 31 species. This is the result of browsing the literature of faunistic investigations of whiteflies in Croatia from 1940 to 2007 and faunistic research done by the authors in the period 2005–2007. During faunistic investigations, 7 of the total 31 recorded species were whitefly species with dark puparia and pupal cases. These are the following species: Aleuroclava hikosanensisTakahashi 1938, Aleurolobus olivinus Silvestri 1911, Aleurolobus wunni Ryberg 1938, Aleurotuba jelinekii Frauenfeld 1867, Aleuroviggianus adrianae Iaccarino 1982, Simplaleurodes hemisphaerica Goux 1945 and Tetralicia ericae Harrison 1917. In addition to these, another 2 whitefly species with dark puparia and pupal cases were recorded later in Croatia. These are Aleurocanthus spiniferus (Quaintance 1903), which was reported for the first time in Croatia in 2012 and Aleuroclava aucubae (Kuwana 1911), first detected in Croatia in 2013

The biological development and feeding ability of Curinus coeruleus Mulsant on several phytophthires. The research was conducted to investigate the survival and feeding capability of Curinus coeruleus Mulsant on Heteropsylla cubana, Aleurocanthus spiniferus, Planococcus citri, and Aspidiotus destructor. The research was done in completely randomized design with eight replications. The result showed that C. coeruleus could not survive on A. spiniferus. The head width of C. coeruleus larvae did not differ significantly in A. destructor, P. citri, or H. cubana. The head width increase of C. coeruleus larvae feeding on A. destructor followed Dyar’s law with growth ratio of 1,4. Larval stadium of C. coeruleus, imago stadium, longevity, and the number of consumed preys were affected by phytophthires species. C. coeruleus could feed on more H. cubana than A. destructor, or P. citri.

京都府のチャで発生したミカントゲコナジラミに対して有効な薬剤を選定するために,数種殺虫剤を供試して漬浸法により殺虫効果を検討した結果,DMTP,フェンプロパトリン,アセタミプリド,ブプロフェジン,スピロメシフェン,ミルベメクチンおよびトルフェンピラドの殺虫効果が高かった。殺虫効果の高かった薬剤のうち4薬剤の防除効果を確認したところ,ブプロフェジン,スピロメシフェン,トルフェンピラドの防除効果は高かったが,アセタミプリドはやや低かった。

The presence of Aleurocanthus spiniferus is reported for the first time in Italy. The orange spiny whitefly was identified in April 2008 in the Apulia region. This is also the first record of this citrus pest in Europe.

Aleurocanthus spiniferus (Quaintance), namely tea spiny whitefly (TSW), belongs to the family Aleyrodidae in the order Homoptera, widespread in tea trees and fruit trees in many countries or regions. In this study, the preference of TSW for different colours was evaluated in tea gardens. Yellow was the colour most preferred by TSW, followed by pink, red, white and other colours. The controlling technologies about the number of sticky traps in a certain area of tea garden and the height of sticky traps above tea canopy were also evaluated, the results indicated that the attractive effect of 20 traps/667 m2 of trials area and the height of 10 cm above tea canopy were significantly higher than others treatments. In addition, more TSW was caught at 11:00-15:00, followed by 7:00-11:00, and 15:00-19:00 in a daytime; higher activity level of male adults was at 7:00-11:00 and 11:00-15:00 in day time (95.13% and 94.97% of caught TSW), indicating a higher activity level for male adult.
