Holocene paleoclimate reconstructions and comparisons largely rely on accurate age-depth modeling. However, uncertainties in chronology, such as those caused by sparse radiocarbon dates, will hamper inter-core comparisons and correlations, and might result in misleading "cause and consequence" conclusions. This study aimed to find a solution to increase the comparability and minimize the uncertainty of wetland chronology as much as possible. Sediment cores were recovered and radiocarbon dated from the Lianhuachi wetland located in Southeastern China. Humification degree and loss-on-ignition (LOI) were determined using colorimetric and combustion methods respectively. Our data were compared with previously published datasets obtained in the same wetland. The results show that independent humification profiles from the Lianhuachi wetland displayed high similarities. This high similarity between the humification profiles allowed us to transfer radiocarbon ages from one core to another using sequence slotting correlation. Applying the humification-based chronology refinement method to all sediment cores resulted in an improvement in the correlation coefficients between the same but independently measured proxy sequences from the wetland, which suggests both the inter- and intra-core comparability was improved. Because determining peat humification degree is easy, inexpensive, and time-saving, we suggest that humification can serve as a tool that can be used to correlate different cores and to transfer published radiocarbon ages within the same wetland (peatland) or in a comparable geological setting, to establish a more robust chronology of these comparable cores. High-resolution proxy-based paleoenvironmental records derived from peatlands provide important insights into climate changes over centennial to millennial timescales. In this study, we present a composite climatic index (CCI) for the Hani peatland from northeastern China, based on an innovative combination of pollen-spore, phytolith, and grain size data. We use the CCI to reconstruct variations of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) intensity during the Holocene. This is accomplished with complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition (CEEMD), REDFIT, and cross-wavelet coherency analysis to reveal the periodicities (frequencies) of the multi-proxy derived CCI sequences and to assess potential external forcing of the EASM. The results showed that periodicities of ca. 300–350, 475, 600, 1075, and 1875 years were present in the Hani CCI sequence. Those periodicities are consistent with previously published periodicities in East Asia, indicating they are a product of external climate controls over an extensive region, rather than random variations caused by peatland-specific factors. Cross-wavelet coherency analysis between the decomposed CCI components and past solar activity reconstructions suggests that variations of solar irradiation are most likely responsible for the cyclic characteristics at 500-year frequency. We propose a conceptual model to interpret how the sun regulates the monsoon climate via coupling with oceanic and atmospheric circulations. It seems that slight solar irradiation changes can be amplified by coupling with ENSO events, which result in a significant impact on the regional climate in the East Asian monsoon area. The southeastern China coast is a region of special interest in the study of past and present relative sea-level change, given its distal location from giant ice sheets (far-field regions). During the past decades, a large number of biological, geological, and archaeological sea-level indicators have been retrieved from the Fujian coastal region which allows for recalibration and recalculation of sea-level index points (SLIPs). This study constructs a database of Holocene relative sea-level (RSL) observations for the Fujian coast, southeastern China. The database contains 59 quality-controlled SLIPs which show that RSL for the Fujian coast did not exceed present (0 m) during the Holocene, except potentially during 7.5–5.5 cal. kyr BP and 1.8–0.7 cal. kyr BP. Rates of RSL change were highest during the early Holocene and have decreased over time, due to the diminishing response of the Earth's mantle to glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) and reduction of meltwater input. A series of sea-level oscillations were recorded in our SLIPs-based reconstructions which might correspond to global climate warming or cooling events. We assessed the spatial variability of RSL histories and compared these with the ICE-6G_C and ANU-ICE GIA model predictions. Substantial misfits between GIA predictions and regional RSL reconstructions were recognized: (1) the deceleration of the early-Holocene sea-level rise ended about one millennia earlier in the ICE-6G_C model than in the SLIPs-based reconstructions; (2) GIA model predictions show a mid-Holocene sea-level highstand of 1–3 m which is absent from our SLIPs-based reconstructions; and (3) all GIA model predicted a gradual RSL fall to 0 m since the middle Holocene, while our reconstruction displays significant RSL oscillations. It is presently unknown whether these misfits are caused by uncertainties in regional tectonic movement estimation or parameters used in the GIA models. Peatlands provide a widespread terrestrial archive for Holocene study. However, little is known about the grain-size characteristics of peaty sediments and their environmental significance. In order to study these phenomena in detail, two sections from the Hani and Gushantun peatlands in the Changbai Mountain Area were cored and sub-sampled. Based on reliable calibrated AMS 14 C ages, we established grain size variations in the peat cores since 15.6 ka cal. BP. Our results showed that the peaty sediments in the Changbai Mountains are mainly composed of silt. Moreover, the grain size component, which is related to paleoclimate variables, can be classified into three groups based on the “Grain size class vs. standard deviation” method. These sensitive grain size components are <37.0 μm (Component 1 or C1), 37.0–497.8 μm (Component 2 or C2) and >497.8 μm (Component 3 or C3). C1 comprises the finest silt in the peaty sediment and is mainly conveyed by the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM), whereas C2 is transported into the peatland by surface runoff related to the enhancement of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM). C3 is conveyed in saltation and bed-load mode by strong surface runoff linked to high-energy flow caused by a strong EASM, and perhaps is an indicator of extreme rainfall events in the Changbai Mountains. Our results suggest that the study region was dominated by a cold/dry environment during the late-glacial period under a strong EAWM. However, there was a marked climatic shift from an EAWM-dominated cold/dry climate to an EASM-dominated more mesic environment during the early Holocene. Increased percentage of C2 in peat cores during the Holocene Optimum (9.0–4.5 ka) indicates abundant rainfall in the study region (even with extreme rainfall events) as a result of a significant enhancement of the EASM. Weak monsoon events occurred at 10.5 ka, 9.2 ka, 8.2 ka, 7.2 ka, 6.2ka, 5.5 ka and 4.2 ka shown by sharp decreases in C2, agreeing with the stalagmite δ 18 O records in China. The results obtained from environmentally sensitive grain-size component records are largely consistent with other palaeoenvironmental records in the East Asian monsoon area, substantiating the regional climate patterns and monsoon evolution since late-glacial time. Because intensity of the East Asian monsoon is likely responsible for the grain-size change in the peat samples, the grain size components in peat samples may be used for reconstructions of past environmental conditions and of variability in the East Asian monsoon. An improved understanding of past interactions between terrestrial vegetation and various forcings, such as climate change, human impact, and paleofire, is crucial for assessing impacts of future global change on terrestrial ecosystems. This study seeks to find the key factor or factors that have driven Holocene vegetation change along the East Asian monsoon margin. Several high-resolution pollen records are reviewed and new phytolith-based paleovegetation reconstructions and physical geochemical datasets are presented from a peatland in northeastern China. Using 108 modern topsoil samples as a training set, canopy cover and vegetation composition are estimated for the period since 5100 cal. yr BP. Variation partitioning analysis (VPA) is used to determine the relative importance of climate change, human impacts, and paleofire disturbance. The generalized dynamic vegetation model LPJ-GUESS is forced with climate anomaly output from an atmospheric general circulation model to simulate vegetation dynamics during the mid-Holocene and the pre-industrial era. The proxy-based estimates are compared to modelling output. Results indicate that regional tree cover varied from 10% to 40% during the past five millennia. The single-core, phytolith-based reconstructions are generally consistent with stacked tree pollen z-scores calculated from different records along the East Asian monsoon margin, implying that mid-Holocene tree cover decrease was persistent and almost synchronous over extensive areas. VPA demonstrates that long-term monsoon marginal vegetation successions were mainly caused by climate effects. Numerical modelling suggests that since the mid-Holocene the retreat of forests along the monsoon margin was primarily associated with precipitation deficits. Our investigation highlights that the precipitation associated with the East Asian monsoon system has exerted a stronger influence than the westerlies on the monsoon margin climate and vegetation change. Peatlands located at the northern edge of the East Asian monsoon (EAM) are well placed to provide a terrestrial record of past climate and hydrological changes for this globally sensitive region. Here we present a middle to late Holocene, diatom-derived water-table records from a peatland in the Greater Hinggan Mountains, northeastern China. An age-depth model was achieved through AMS14C dating and Bayesian piece-wise linear accumulation modelling. The diatom-based water-table reconstructions show that the peatland water-table rose from 5100 to 3500 cal. yr BP, but fell approximately 3500 cal. yr BP. From about 2800 to 1500 cal. yr BP, the peatland water-table stabilized. After about 1500 cal. yr BP, several rapid hydrological shifts, which correspond with global climate anomalies such as ice-rafted debris (IRD) events, were registered in the reconstructed water-tables. Compared with other paleoclimate records in East Asia, the general trend of peatland water-table fluctuations follows the variations in the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) intensity. Spectrum analysis of the water-table profile yielded a statistically significant periodicity of 470-year that may be related to the "~500-year" inherent solar irradiation cycles. In addition, positive correlation between the peatland water-table levels and cosmic-isotope-reconstructed sunspot numbers underscores the role of the sun in regulating hydrological processes in the EASM margin area. The data suggest that the regional climate and hydrological variations at the EASM margin were first triggered by changes in solar output, but may have been amplified by interactions with oceanic and atmospheric circulations. • The Songnen region was occupied by grassland with stable diversity and cover. • The long-term evolution of the grassland ecosystem was mainly driven by climate. • Plant cover and several dominant taxa were climatically sensitive. Accurate estimates of changes in the composition and diversity of grassland ecosystems, and an understanding of the mechanisms responsible, are essential for predicting future changes and for conservation planning. Here, we synthesize stratigraphic records of phytoliths, together with previously published pollen, diatom, carbonate and grain-size records, from a peat profile (LDBS) in the Songnen region of Northeast China. The results demonstrate that since the mid-Holocene this region was occupied by grassland, with C 3 grasses always dominant but with C 4 grasses progressively increasing. The species richness and plant cover were high and relatively stable for most of the studied interval, but they decreased significantly in the last ∼1,000 years. The long-term evolution of this grassland ecosystem was dominated by climate changes, but it was also affected by human activities and local habitat factors. The plant cover and several dominant plant taxa were climatically sensitive, while the C 4 grasses also responded to changes in the water table and human activities. Species richness was relatively stable but it responded to long-term climatic changes. Phytolith-based reconstruction of Holocene plant community composition and diversity and their driving mechanisms can potentially be used to facilitate conservation planning in this temperate grassland ecosystem. This study uses new herbaceous phytolith indices to reconstruct the paleoclimate in the Changbai Mountains, NE China. In this study, we collected 52 pairs of herbaceous quadrats and corresponding topsoils: 25 were from the understory (UND) and 7 were from the non-understory (NON) in the Changbai Mountains; whereas the other 20 were from the grassland (GRA) of Songnen Plain for comparing the forest area of the Changbai Mountains. The phytolith analyses of the 104 modern samples provide a guide of using herbaceous phytolith indices as paleoclimate reconstruction. The herbaceous quadrats of the Changbai Mountains contained more long-cell phytoliths and fewer short-cell phytoliths compared to the herbaceous quadrats of the Songnen grassland; and similar situations appeared in the corresponding topsoil phytoliths. The ratio of short cell% to long cell% (S/L) in the topsoil can be used to discriminate grassland (S/L > 1.65) and forest (<1.65), with discriminant accuracy of 80%. Furthermore, in the forest region, S/L in the topsoil is low for the non-understory (NON) (<0.46), and relatively high for the understory (UND) (0.46 < S/L < 1.65), probably due to preservation of short-cell phytoliths. The ratio of rondel% to lanceolate% (Ro/La) reflected the same trend as S/L for the forest region: Ro/La < 0.23 indicating NON, and Ro/La > 0.89 indicating UND. Thus, lower S/L and Ro/La ratios may reflect more development of NON in the forest region under relatively warm conditions, whereas higher S/L and Ro/La values indicate better development of UND with cold climates. These two indices (S/L and Ro/La) from a peat profile in the Changbai Mountains were further used to reconstruct the paleoclimate since 7670 a BP. The phytolith analyses of 33 peat samples from the 326-cm long core showed four ordinal clustering zones: Zone I (7670–4060 a BP) with low mean S/L (0.42) and Ro/La (0.78) was characterized as warm. In Zone II (4060–2580 a BP), S/L and Ro/La fluctuated around mean values of 0.47 and 3.40, respectively; indicating cooler climate than Zone I. Zone III (2580–640 a BP) was characterized by the highest mean values of S/L (0.53) and Ro/La (6.97) in the profile, reflecting the coldest condition in the record. In Zone IV (640 a BP–modern), the average values of S/L and Ro/La were 0.31 and 1.14, respectively. Both indices increased initially and then declined, perhaps reflecting the colder climate of the Little Ice Age, followed by a warming period. The climatic patterns of the Changbai Mountains reconstructed from the herbaceous phytolith indices agreed with the Ic index and pollen analysis from the same peat profile, suggesting that these new herbaceous phytolith indices should be applicable in paleoclimate reconstruction.
