The Hikurangi subduction margin, New Zealand, has not produced large subduction earthquakes within the short written historic period (~180 years) and the potential of the plate interface to host large (M > 7) to great (M > 8) earthquakes and tsunamis is poorly constrained. The geological record of past subduction earthquakes offers a method for assessing the location, frequency and approximate magnitude of subduction earthquakes to underpin seismic and tsunami hazard assessments. We review evidence of Holocene coseismic coastal deformation and tsunamis at 22 locations along the margin. A consistent approach to radiocarbon age modelling is used and earthquake and tsunami evidence is ranked using a systematic assessment of the quality of age control and the certainty that the event in question is an earthquake. To identify possible subduction earthquakes, we use temporal correlation of earthquakes, combined with the type of earthquake evidence, likely primary fault source and the earthquake certainty ranking. We identify 10 past possible subduction earthquakes over the past 7000 years along the Hikurangi margin. The last subduction earthquake occurred at 520–470 years BP in the southern Hikurangi margin and the strongest evidence for a full margin rupture is at 870–815 years BP. There are no apparent persistent rupture patches, suggesting segmentation of the margin is not strong. In the southern margin, the type of geological deformation preserved generally matches that expected due to rupture of the interseismically locked portion of the subduction interface but the southern termination of past subduction ruptures remains unresolved. The pattern of geological deformation on the central margin suggests that the region of the interface that currently hosts slow slip events also undergoes rupture in large earthquakes, demonstrating different modes of slip behaviour occur on the central Hikurangi margin. Evidence for subduction earthquakes on the northern margin has not been identified because deformation signals from upper plate faults dominate the geological record. Large uncertainties remain in regard to evidence of past subduction earthquakes on the Hikurangi margin, with the greatest challenges presented by temporal correlation of earthquake evidence when working within the uncertainties of radiocarbon ages, and the presence of upper plate faults capable of producing deformation and tsunamis similar to that expected for subduction earthquakes. However, areas of priority research such as improving the paleotsunami record and integration of submarine turbidite records should produce significant advances in the future.

At Table Cape, Mahia Peninsula, North Island, New Zealand, four marine terraces have been uplifted coseismically during the past 3500 years. Detailed facies assessment of the terrace coverbed sequence coupled with identification of modern analogues on the active shore platform were used to infer the process of marine terrace formation and to estimate the timing and amount of past uplift events (earthquakes). The modern platform can be subdivided into seven depositional zones: subtidal, outer platform, intertidal sand pockets, inner platform, high-tide, mid-storm, and storm beach. Terrace coverbeds were characterised from two trenches excavated across the full width of the uplifted terrace sequence. Off-lapping packages of high tidal, mid-storm, and storm beach sediments were most common. Outer platform sediments occurred only rarely near the base of some uplifted shore platforms. Overlying the marine sediments were near-horizontal terrestrial deposits of airfall tephra (on the two highest terraces), subsoil, topsoil, rare wedges of colluvial sediment (slopewash) shed from terrace risers, and an anomalous deposit possibly emplaced by a tsunami. Fifty-one radiocarbon ages, obtained from molluscs in the marine coverbeds, showed a general pattern of seaward-younging across the coastal plain and across each terrace and a less pronounced pattern of decreasing age upward in each coverbed sequence. The distinctive stepped geomorphology of the terraces, the facies and age structure of the terrace deposits and historical earthquake causation of similar terraces elsewhere in New Zealand provided the data to invoke an earthquake-driven model for terrace formation. Marine terrace development following an uplift event involved rapid cutting of a new intertidal shore platform and generally regressive deposition of high-tide to storm beach deposits. Following further uplift, the platform became a geomorphic terrace (above marine influence) and was then mantled by terrestrial sediments. On the two highest terraces at Table Cape, airfall tephras mantling the marine coverbeds provided a minimum age for terrace uplift. The youngest radiocarbon ages from high-tide deposits high in the stratigraphy and near the seaward edge of each terrace provided the best estimates for the timing of uplift. Based on the new radiocarbon ages and the constraining airfall tephra ages, we revised the earthquake ages to 3530–3350, 1810–1730, 1560–1300 and 300–100 cal. YBP. Associated best estimates of the coseismic uplift amounts were 2.1, 1.4, 1.8, and 3.1 m respectively, once we accounted for eustatic sea level changes through the late Holocene.

A sedimentary sequence that was highly sensitive to fault rupture–driven changes in water level and sediment supply has been used to extract a continuous record of 22 large earthquakes on the Alpine fault, the fastest-slipping fault in New Zealand. At Hokuri Creek, in South Westland, an 18 m thickness of Holocene sediments accumulated against the Alpine fault scarp from ca. A.D. 800 to 6000 B.C. We used geomorphological mapping, sedimentology, and paleoenvironmental reconstruction to investigate the relationship between these sediments and Alpine fault rupture. We found that repeated fault rupture is the most convincing mechanism for explaining all the features of the alternating peat and silt sedimentary sequence. Climate has contributed to sedimentation but is unlikely to be the driver of these cyclical changes in sediment type and paleoenvironment. Other nontectonic causes for the sedimentary alternations do not produce the incremental increase in basin accommodation space necessary to maintain the shallow-water environment for 6800 yr. Our detailed documentation of this near-fault sedimentary basin sequence highlights the advantages of extracting paleoearthquake records from such sites—the continuity of sedimentation, abundance of dateable material, and pristine preservation of older events.

Strata and fault relationships revealed in five trenches excavated across the recent trace of the Alpine fault at the Haast, Okuru, and Turnbull Rivers, South Westland, New Zealand, record the three most recent surface‐faulting events. Using back‐stripping techniques to remove the three faulting events and the sedimentary units associated with the faulting restores the cross‐sections to gravel‐bed floodplains at the Haast and Okuru Rivers, at about A.D. 750. Horizontal and vertical offsets of stream channels and terrace risers reveal characteristic displacements of about 8–9 m dextral and up to 1 m vertical per event. Cumulative dextral displacement is 25±3 m in the past three events. The most recent surface‐rupture event was probably in A.D. 1717, and the next prior events were about A.D. 1230±50 and about A.D.750±50. The timing of these events is consistent with past large‐great earthquakes on the southern section of the Alpine fault inferred from off‐fault data, but there are fewer events identified in trenches. Our three‐event dataset indicates the average surface‐rupture recurrence interval for the South Westland section of the fault is about 480 years, much longer than the current elapsed time of 295 years. Therefore, the Alpine fault in South Westland may not be close to rupture as is often speculated.

The formation and uplift of Holocene marine terraces along a 160-km-long stretch of the Wairarapa coast in the southern Hikurangi subduction margin, North Island, New Zealand, are interpreted in terms of causative faults and associated large earthquakes during the past circa 7000 cal yr B.P. Distinctive stepped terrace morphology, the clustering of radiocarbon ages on each uplifted terrace, and the historic occurrence of coseismic uplift in other parts of eastern and southern North Island, support the contention that coastal uplift occurred suddenly and repeatedly during large-magnitude earthquakes. The rupture of five west-dipping reverse or reverse-oblique faults within the Australian plate, whose surface traces lie a short distance seaward of the present shoreline, are inferred to be responsible for coastal uplift. Individual structures range in length from 25 to 60 km. These lengths, together with uplift events in the range of 1–4 m, suggest earthquakes in the range of M w 7–7.5. Approximately 20% of the radiocarbon ages are anomalously young for their elevations, but many have ages indistinguishable from accepted ages for terrace uplift. We infer that many of the anomalous ages are from samples deposited by tsunami that occurred in association with offshore fault rupture on adjacent sections of the coast.

Coastlines that trend both parallel and normal to the Hikurangi subduction margin along the Raukumara Peninsula, New Zealand, provide a globally unique situation that enables study of the coastal deformation and its spatial variance across and along the forearc. The data suggest there is margin-parallel zoning of the forearc deformation processes across the Raukumara segment of the Hikurangi margin. On forearc promontories closest to the Hikurangi trench (within 80 km), Holocene marine and fluvial terraces record localised zones of intermittent uplift driven by large coseismic events on landward-dipping nearshore reverse faults. At greater distances from the trench (>100 km), Holocene and Pleistocene coastal stratigraphy and geomorphology suggest that surface uplift occurs by a gradual mechanism: either by frequent small earthquakes or by an aseismic process. The Repongaere Fault is one of a series of active normal faults within the Raukumara Peninsula, eastern North Island, New Zealand. These faults appear to form in response to rapid uplift of the Raukumara Range and related extensional strain. However, the activity of these normal faults is poorly constrained. This paper presents new mapping of the active surface trace of the Repongaere Fault, c. 18 km northwest of Gisborne, and the results of two paleoseismic trenches. These results are then used to assess the seismic hazard posed by this fault and impacts on the Waipaoa Sedimentary System in which the fault is situated. Active traces can be mapped for c. 4.5 km, but we infer the surface rupture length to be at least 9 km. Tephras within the trenches constrain the timing of the most recent surface rupture event to have occurred during deposition of the Waimihia Tephra (c. 3400 cal. yr BP), and at least one event in the period c. 13 800–5470 cal. yr BP, with single‐event displacements of ≥0.4–1. 1 ...

Six trenches and additional exposures have been investigated along a 23 km length of the Pahiatua section of the Wellington Fault. The sites show a consistent fault rupture record for the last four surface‐faulting events along the Pahiatua section. This multi‐site record of events, supported by 28 radiocarbon ages that span the last c. 4500 yr, is the most complete paleoseismic record for the Wellington Fault. From southwest to northeast, the trenches are called Death‐1 and ‐2, Hughes‐2 and ‐1, and Ebbett‐2 and ‐1, named after local farmers. Additional data come from an exposure at the Army Depot northeast of Ebbett‐1 and a stream cutting near the Death‐1 trench. Earthquake events are recognised on the basis of upward terminations of faults and stratigraphic evidence (unconformities; scarp‐derived colluvial deposits; “co‐seismically” generated, organic, poorly sorted units; and subsequent scarp‐ponded units). The coastal geomorphology of the northeastern Raukumara Peninsula, New Zealand, is examined with the aim of determining the mechanisms of Holocene coastal uplift. Elevation and coverbed stratigraphic data from previously interpreted coseismic marine terraces at Horoera and Waipapa indicate that, despite the surface morphology, there is no evidence that these terraces are of marine or coseismic origin. Early Holocene transgressive marine deposits at Hicks Bay indicate significant differences between the thickness of preserved intertidal infill sediments and the amount of space created by eustatic sea level rise, therefore uplift did occur during early Holocene evolution of the estuary. The palaeoecology and stratigraphy of the sequence shows no evidence of sudden land elevation changes. Beach ridge sequences at Te Araroa slope gradually toward the present day coast with no evidence of coseismic steps. The evolution of the beach ridges was probably controlled by sediment supply in the context of a background continuous uplift rate. No individual dataset uniquely resolves the uplift mechanism. However, from the integration of all evidence we conclude that Holocene coastal uplift of this region has been driven by a gradual, aseismic mechanism. An important implication of this is that tectonic uplift mechanisms do vary along the East Coast of the North Island. This contrasts with conclusions of previous studies, which have inferred Holocene coastal uplift along the length of the margin was achieved by coseismic events. This is the first global example of aseismic processes accommodating uplift at rates of >1 mm yr−1 adjacent to a subduction zone and it provides a valuable comparison to subduction zones dominated by great earthquakes.

Paleoenvironmental reconstructions of three coastal waterbodies in Wellington, New Zealand, reveal that sites were isolated from the sea within the last 7500 years through coseismic uplift and barrier growth. Evidence for coseismic uplift consists of distinct transitions in diatom assemblages representing large changes in relative sea-level or water-table level, commonly in association with sedimentological evidence for catchment disturbance or marine influx. Transitions are abrupt, laterally extensive and synchronous within each waterbody. Amount of change across transition horizons is assessed using quantitative estimates of paleosalinity and waterbody type as proxies for relative sea-level change. Seven transitions involve large paleoenvironmental changes and provide evidence for earthquakes occurring at approximately 5100, 3200 (recorded at two sites), 2300 (recorded at two sites), 1000 cal years BP and 1855 AD. Five other transitions involve smaller paleoenvironmental changes and are considered to be consistent with effects of earthquakes but do not provide independent evidence for earthquake occurrence. These smaller transitions occur at approximately 6800, 3600, 2200, 1000 (coincident with a large transition) and 500 cal years BP. The data refine ages and provide information about the extent and effects of past large earthquakes in the region. These are the first paleoecologically derived earthquake signatures for Wellington and they contribute to the sparse collection worldwide of off-fault sedimentary earthquake records for predominantly strike-slip faults.

A sequence of fluvio-estuarine sediments exposed beneath the highest Holocene marine terrace at Pakarae, North Island, New Zealand, records the early-mid Holocene infilling of the Pakarae valley. This sequence was developed on an active, coseismically uplifting coastline and provides a valuable comparison to widely used facies models for estuaries, which were developed exclusively from stable coastal settings. We describe eight sedimentary sections, distributed along a 220 m stretch of riverbank and present twelve new radiocarbon ages. Sedimentology and benthic foraminifera are used to divide the sequence into eight bio-lithofacies. These units are grouped into four paleoenvironmental facies associations: barrier, estuarine, estuary-head delta and floodplain. We compare the distribution of the Pakarae paleoenvironmental facies associations to those in models of incised valley infill sequence models and case studies of infilled valleys. These data allow us to present new contributions to the development of a facies model for the sedimentary infilling of an incised valley system that was experiencing coseismic uplift synchronous with deposition. We suggest the distinctive characteristics of such a model would include (1) part, or all, of the transgressive and lowstand sequences may now lie above modern sea level, (2) the transgressive sedimentary sequence is typically condensed relative to the coeval amount of eustatic sea level (SL) rise that occurred during that period, and (3) evidence of relative SL falls, such as transitions from estuarine to fluvial environments, despite conditions of rapid and continuous eustatic SL rise.

A suite of seven marine terraces at the Pakarae River mouth, New Zealand, provide evidence for the highest Holocene coastal uplift rates adjacent to the Hikurangi Subduction Zone. New elevation, coverbed stratigraphy, and age data allow for a timely revision of the distribution, nomenclature, and chronology of these terraces. Terrace correlation primarily is based on the elevation of the wave‐cut strath. Terrace preservation either side of the river is more equal than previously proposed. Paleoecological investigations of three Holocene marginal-marine sedimentary sequences provide information on vertical tectonic deformation in a transect across the forearc basin adjacent to the Hikurangi subduction zone, New Zealand. The elevation of maximum postglacial sea level indicators at Te Paeroa Lagoon and Opoho is between 4 and 6 m below present mean sea level, indicating net subsidence since 7200 yr B.P. Opoutama is closer to the Hikurangi Trench and appears to lie near the edge of the zone of subsidence, as evidence for vertical movement there is equivocal. Some of the subsidence at Te Paeroa Lagoon and Opoho is likely to be a result of compaction. However, a component of subsidence probably happened coseismically in two events at ca. 7100 and 5550 yr B.P. Event signatures consist of tsunami deposits overlain by chaotically mixed, reworked sediment that appears to have filled rapidly created accommodation space at marine inlet sites 10 km apart. Large offshore earthquakes are suggested by the coincidence of tsunami inundation with sudden subsidence. Forward elastic-dislocation models indicate that the observed subsidence could be achieved in ∼M w 7.9 earthquakes on either the subduction interface or the Lachlan Fault, which would involve synchronous uplift of Mahia Peninsula. Combined rupture of the interface and the Lachlan Fault, either simultaneously in a ∼M w 8.1 earthquake, or consecutively, could explain larger amounts (>1.5 m) of coastal subsidence.

Three trenches excavated across the central portion of the right‐lateral strike‐slip Wairau Fault in South Island, New Zealand, exposed a complex set of fault strands that have displaced a sequence of late Holocene alluvial and colluvial deposits. Abundant charcoal fragments provide age control for various stratigraphic horizons dating back to c. 5610 yr ago. Faulting relations from the Wadsworth trench show that the most recent surface rupture event occurred at least 1290 yr and at most 2740 yr ago. Drowned trees in landslide‐dammed Lake Chalice, in combination with charcoal from the base of an unfaulted colluvial wedge at Wadsworth trench, suggest a narrower time bracket for this event of 1811–2301 cal. yr BP The penultimate faulting event occurred between c. 2370 and 3380 yr, and possibly near 2680 ± 60 cal. yr BP, when data from both the Wadsworth and Dillon trenches are combined. The Wellington Fault is a major active, right lateral, strike‐slip fault in southern North Island that can be divided into three distinct geometric sections based on changes in neotectonic character and structural complexities. These are, from south to north: the Wellington‐Hutt Valley segment; Tararua section; and Pahiatua section. The Pahiatua section is a 42 km long, straight, NNE‐striking fault section defined between two geometric endpoints near Putara in the south and Woodville. This section has been mapped in detail and exhibits classic strike‐slip tectonic geomorphology and late Quaternary dextral displacements of up to 125 m. Three trenches excavated at sites along the Pahiatua section are used to define the dextral slip rate for this section. At Bennett trench site, a stream is dextrally deflected 50 ± 6 m. Peaty silts underlying “deflected” channel deposits in the trench yield an age of 8390–8700 cal. yr BP, providing a minimum dextral slip rate of 5.1–6.7 mm/yr. At Hughes 1 site, a st...

Eleven sand layers occur within Holocene low- energy estuarine and marginal marine sequences of blue-grey silty clay at two sites on the coastal plain between Wairoa and Mahia Peninsula, northern Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. The sedimentology and fossil assemblages of these layers are consistent with deposition by high-energy influxes to the sites. Three influxes are terrestrial in nature and are thought to represent alluvial flood events. All other sand layers are marine derived and are likely to be the result of storm surges or tsunami. Tsunami inundation is favoured for two sand layers that occur in association with evidence for sudden subsidence at c. 6300 and c. 4800 yr BP. The c. 6300 yr inundation also coincides with previously identified evidence for a tsunami at a site 10 km westwards along the coast. Further investigation is required to distinguish between tsunami and storm surge deposition for the remaining six layers.

A correlation of fluvial terraces is presented for eight non-glacial catchments of the eastern North Island, New Zealand, within the actively uplifting Hikurangi Margin. Using a combination of loess and tephra coverbed stratigraphy, and radiocarbon and OSL dating of fluvial deposits and loess coverbeds, we demonstrate correlation of four fill terraces, T1–T4. The available age constraints suggest T1=15–30 ka, T2=31–50 ka, T3=50–70 ka, and T4=∼115 ka, but the association and temporal link with loess deposits suggest correlation with cold periods, and thus the refinement of T2=late MIS 3 (31–40 ka), T3=MIS 4 (55–70 ka), T4=MI Substage 5b (∼90 ka), 5d (∼110 ka), or MIS 6 (∼140–160 ka). The ability to correlate terraces between catchments, plus the lack of independent evidence for tectonic triggering events, indicates terraces have probably formed in response to either climate (terrestrial) or baselevel (sea level) control. Climate control is indicated by the temporal link of post-glacial incision with re-establishment of forest cover, and of LGM aggradation with limited grass and shrub cover and periglacial processes. Aggradation due to increased sediment supply under reduced vegetation is dramatically demonstrated by formation of the Taupo Pumice Alluvium terrace in response to inundation by volcanic deposits (unwelded ignimbrite) following the 1.8 ka Taupo eruption, and the response to post-settlement (

Sediment cores collected in a coastal lagoon a few kilometres east of Wairoa, northern Hawke's Bay, New Zealand, were examined using sedimentological, geochemical, palynological and micropaleontological analyses. A distinct short-lived catastrophic saltwater inundation (CSI) about 6300 years BP and possibly other minor marine incursions are preserved in the coastal estuarine to lagoonal freshwater sedimentary sequences, which have been deposited in the last 6500 years. The CSI is characterised by a gravel unit that thins landward and decreases in particle size to sand, within a sequence consisting mainly of brackish estuarine muds. Diatom assemblages indicate a marked change from the shallow brackish estuarine muds to marine gravels and sands to brackish estuarine muds. The marine influence in the gravel and sand is also shown by the presence of marine dinoflagellates and a peak in Na/Rb. Sedimentological, chemical and paleontological (in particular diatoms) evidence indicates it is a CSI. We conclude that this was a tsunami and propose the most likely propagating mechanisms. Marine influence decreases upcore and totally freshwater conditions are evident in the upper section of the cores. The geochemistry of the sediments mainly reflects the change in stratigraphy, with distinct signatures for tephra (Na, Fe, Cr), organic-rich and peat units (As, Br) and the coarse gravel-sand CSI unit (Na/Rb, Cr, Fe), but it is also indicative of changes in depositional environment. The change in chemistry (Na/Rb) in the CSI event is indicative of a saltwater influence, whereas a marked change in S content suggests a sudden change from brackish to freshwater conditions shortly after 4800 years BP. Another peak in S and Br content about 3200 years BP may indicate another temporary change to brackish conditions.

Height and age information from Holocene estuarine deposits along the northeastern Marlborough coast provide a database to evaluate coastal vertical tectonics. These data are related to the postglacial marine transgression and coastal geomorphic features formed since the culmination of sea‐level rise. Four tectonic domains are recognised. The Wairau domain is characterised by subsidence at rates over 4 mm/yr. About 60% of this subsidence is tectonic and may be related to Marlborough Sounds subsidence, and 40% is a result of compaction. The Vernon Fault at the south side of the lower Wairau plain separates the Wairau domain from the high‐standing Vernon domain. The Awatere Fault marks the southern boundary between the Vernon domain and the Grassmere domain, which extends from the Awatere River valley to Mussel Point. A flight of coral terraces, up to ca. 1, 000 m above sea level, is well preserved on the northern coast of the Huon Peninsula, Papua New Guinea, and records the sea level and tectonic history since ca. 300 ka. The region is located near the boundary between the Western Pacific and Australian plates. The uplift rate since the last interglacial maximum (oxygen isotope stage 5e) ranges from 0.7 m/ka at the northwest end of the coast, and up to 3.5 m/ka towards the southeast end. Late Quaternary paleoseismicity is estimated from subdivided Holocene and late Pleistocene terraces, each of which records meter-scale coseismic uplift events.The study area covers about 40 km of coast. Holocene coral terraces, up to 25 m above sea level, are divided into seven levels at maximum, four to five at most sites. The highest Holocene terrace is a reef crest representing former sea level of the culmination of the sea level rise at ca. 6-6.6 ka BP. The lower terraces are regressive terraces, which record successive intermittent uplift events, probably caused by great earthquakes. Timing of the Holocene uplift events is ca. 2.5, 3.8, 4.4-5.1, and 5.4 ka BP at Kwambu-Kilasairo area on the northwestern coast, and at ca. 0.8, 1.4, 1.8, 2.5, 3.9 and 5.4 ka BP at Kanomi-Nanda area to Hubegong on the central and southern coast. Difference in the timing of the uplift events implies that there are at least two tectonic suregions on this coast.Similar small regressive terraces are also recognized from the detailed profiles of late Pleistocene terraces. For example, in the central and southern part of the study area, 15-7 extra steps occur between transgressive terrace IIIa (ca. 52 ka) and terrace II (ca. 38 ka). Thus, we infer that repeated meter-scale uplift events have occurred at least since ca. 52 ka. The apparent interval of uplift events, about 1-1.5 ka, resembles to that for Holocene.Such a meter-scale uplift with ka-scale recurrence intervals records a different earthquake deformation cycle from the centimeter-scale uplift associated with the 1992 May earthquake (M= 7.2 : Pandolfi et al., 1994). Such a small event with shorter recurrence interval is apparently not expressed geomorphologically as in the form of regressive terrace.

This paper summarises the tectonic setting and seismicity of the Huon Peninsula, based on recently published papers. Some characteristic aspects of tectonic geomorphology are also briefly reviewed.The Huon Peninsula on the northeastern Papua New Guinea, located on ca. 6° S, is a suitable place for Quaternary sea level study, because coral reef terraces as an indicator of former sea level position are well preserved as separate terraces on land, due to strong uplift on the collision zone between the Australian and Pacific plate. The plate boundary is traced on land as Ramu-Malkahm Fault Zone. The formation of the Huon-Finisterre Range is a result of the collision of these two plates during the Quaternary. Fault plane solution for the major shallow earthquakes indicates that many of them are by reverse faults, strike of which is perpendicular to the fault zone. Thus, it can be said that the north-south oriented compression has been dominated at this fault zone.A flight of coral terraces, up to ca. 1, 000 m in altitude, fringes the northeastern coast of this tectonically active Huon Peninsula. U-series dates have been obtained from the terraces younger than Terrace VII, correlated with isotope stage 5e of the last interglacial maximum. Terrace height shows the northwestward downtilting, with some irregularity, from the maximum uplift rate of 3.5 m/ka. The uplift rate since the isotope stage 5e agrees with that for the Holocene, implying that the same pattern of tectonic uplift with the uniform rate has continued during the late Quaternary.Rapid uplift of this area is a result of repeated coseismic uplift which has an meter-scale uplift and ka-scale interval. Evidence of the coseismic uplift is obtained from both Holocene terraces and late Pleistocene terraces. Some of large landslides disrupting coral terraces are also originated coseismically. Coseismic process is an important tectonic factor for the formation and emergence and also for the destruction of coral terraces. These topics, related to paleoseismicity, are discussed in detail elsewhere in another papers in this special issue.Some landforms, related to active tectonics, such as active faults, uplifted alluvial deltas, and stream system, are also briefly discussed in the paper.

A sequence of seven marine terraces of late Pleistocene age constitutes approximately 40% of the area of Mahia Peninsula in eastern North Island. The peninsula is one of the closest land areas to the Hikurangi Trough (approximately 80 km further east), where the Pacific plate is being subducted beneath the Australian plate. Terrace ages of 40, 59, 81, 106, 124, 176, and 212 ka are assigned by correlation with the marine terrace sequence of Huon Peninsula, Papua New Guinea. Paleontological data and amino acid dating of marine components of the 124 ka terrace at Mahia Peninsula provide a basis for correlation to the Huon Peninsula sequence. Loess and tephra stratigraphy constrain the ages of older and younger terraces. The marine terrace sequence is tilted to the WNW on the flank of the NNE trending Lachlan anticline. Uplift of at least 130 m of the circa 124-kyr-old shoreline indicates uplift rates of at least 1 mm/yr at the axis of the anticline. Younger marine terraces have been uplifted more rapidly (about 3 mm/yr), and there is a progressive increase in rate to the youngest Holocene shoreline. Structural contours normalized to the circa 124 ka terrace illustrate the tilt on the flank of the Lachlan anticline and on a secondary structure, the Aurora Point fold. Seismic profiling has confirmed the presence of a reverse fault (the Lachlan fault) at the eastern margin of the Lachlan anticline. The Lachlan fault is inferred to be responsible for growth of the anticline and deformation of the marine terraces. The relationship of the reverse fault to the subduction thrust, which separates the two crustal plates at about 20 km depth below Mahia Peninsula and dips about 6°–12° to the NW, is uncertain. However, the late Pleistocene and Holocene growth of the Lachlan anticline indicates substantial coupling across the plate interface, deforming the inner part of the frontal wedge of the Australian plate.

Mahia Peninsula is a prominent coastal landmark in eastern North Island and is the closest point of land in the North Island to the Hikurangi Trough, where the Pacific plate plunges beneath the subduction complex at the eastern margin of the Australian plate. Uplifted Holocene marine deposits of both estuarine and open beach affinities are found in many parts of the peninsula and provide the basis for Holocene tectonic characterization. Estuarine deposits record the later part of the postglacial transgression that culminated about 6500 years B.P. in New Zealand. The deposits have been differentially uplifted since that time at a rate of 2.5 ± 0.3 mm/yr in the central north coast area, decreasing to 0.7 ± 0.2 mm/yr about 6 km to the west. The coastal plain is characterised in many places by a stepped sequence of emergent shore platforms overlain by fossiliferous beach deposits. Extensive radiocarbon dating of samples from beach deposits shows that terraces in widespread parts of the peninsula are of five distinct ages. Each of the terraces is inferred to have formed in conjunction with a large prehistoric earthquake because of the stepped terrace morphology, clustering of ages on each terrace, differential uplift of terraces across the peninsula, and historic coseismic uplift events in this tectonic setting. Paleoseismic events of Mw 7.5–8.0 are estimated to have occurred approximately 250, ∼1600, ∼1900, ∼3500, and ∼4500 years B.P. Uplift distribution of the Holocene and late Pleistocene marine terraces shows that the peninsula lies on the west (gentle) flank of the active Lachlan anticline, which is cored by a major west dipping reverse fault (the Lachlan fault). Holocene active deformation at Mahia Peninsula and other coastal areas of eastern North Island is a continuation of structures developed in Pleistocene time in the landward part of the subduction complex adjacent to the Hikurangi subduction zone.

Estuarine and beach deposits in the vicinity of the present coastline at Pakarae River record the infilling of an estuary and subsequent development of a sequence of seven marine terraces during Holocene time. At the maximum of the last glaciation about 18,000 years ago the shoreline at the ancestral Pakarae River was approximately 20 km east of the present shoreline. By about 9000 years BP the sea had transgressed across most of that coastal plain to lie within a few hundred metres of the base of the present coastal hills. Seventeen radiocarbon ages from estuarine deposits record the overall rise in post-glacial sea level, but in the period c. 9500-7000 yrs BP there are reversals to the overall rising trend. Between 9500 and 8500 yrs BP there appears to have been a eustatic fall in sea level of at least 4 m. This observation is supported by data from several other localities around New Zealand. Maximum transgression occurred about 6500–7000 yrs BP when the sea reached the base of hillslopes and an extensive estuary existed behind a barrier bar. Since that time the barrier bar disappeared, probably due to stranding in an uplift event, and the coastline advanced progressively outward toward its present position. Coastal progradation (sea level regression) and subsequent erosion have occurred in association with episodic large earthquakes at about 6700, 5400, 3910, 2450, 1570, 1000 and 600 yrs BP. The present distribution of terraces has been influenced by coastal erosion, which has removed all trace of some terraces from some areas, and river erosion has modified the marine terraces near the river.

The Rangitaiki Plain, eastern Bay of Plenty, New Zealand, is the geographic expression of an active continental back-arc rift known as the Taupo Volcanic Zone. The rift is characterized by tectonic subsidence at rates of 0.4–2.0 mm/year and is bounded by faults and marginal uplift at approximately 1.0 mm/year. Since 6.5 ka, the Rangitaiki Plain prograded at least 10 km, due to volcanoclastic sediment supplied by three major rivers, to reach its present location at about 1.8 ka. At this time a linear coast was formed, cliffed to the west in marine sediments and unwelded ignimbrites and extending as far east as a greywacke headland at Whakatane. In the tectonically subsiding Rangitaiki Plain, an abundant supply of sediment overwhelms the tectonic control on coastal evolution. Further east, a wide embayment at Ohiwa remained little changed from 6.5 to ca. 2 ka, when the coastline in the plain prograded as far as the Whakatane headland and longshore drift began to provide it with a substantial volume of sediment. Barrier spits formed rapidly and sedimentation has effectively closed and partially infilled the embayment. Ohiwa estuary, despite its location in the actively uplifting margin of the continental rift, remained submerged until sufficient sediment was available to contribute to the coastline-straightening process. The Bay of Plenty coastline is presently in a near-equilibrium state.

Holocene marine terraces along 15 km of the northeastern coast of North Island record episodic tectonic uplift. A maximum of seven terraces are arranged in staircase fashion and lie about 20 km above the subduction interface between the Pacific and Australian plates. The highest (T1) corresponds with the maximum of the Holocene marine transgression about 6700 14C yr B.P. Younger terraces are marine abrasion platforms overlain by thin beach deposits. Radiocarbon ages of marine shells from beach deposits indicate that uplift above marine conditions occurred ca. 6700(T1), 5500(T2), 3900(T3), 2500(4), 1600(T5), 1000(T6), and slightly younger than 600(T7) yr B.P. Uplift probably occurred coseismically. The maximum late Holocene uplift rate in the study area is 8 mm/yr. Altitudinal distribution of terraces suggests deformation exists as a ca. 20-km elongate dome, broken at the southern end by the Pakarae fault, which trends across the dome. Rupture on this fault has accompanied the growth of the dome but is not responsible for it. Bathymetric profiling suggests that an active fault, parallel to and about 5 km offshore, is probably responsible for the episodic coastal uplift.

[1] Early Holocene transgressive marine deposits infilling the Pakarae River paleovalley are used to extend the paleoseismic history of the Pakarae River locality, East Coast, North Island, New Zealand, back in time prior to eustatic sea level stabilization at ∼7 calibrated (cal) ka B.P. Paleoenvironmental evolution of the Pakarae River paleovalley from 7 to 10 cal ka B.P is reconstructed using sedimentology and biostratigraphy. Two estuarine units display sudden vertical transitions to floodplain sediments implying significant marine regressions and estuary abandonment. These regressions are attributed to coseismic coastal uplift events at ∼9000 and ∼8500 cal years B.P. A third uplift between 8500 and ∼7350 cal years B.P. is inferred from a significant difference between the amount of sediment preserved and the predicted sediment thickness according to the eustatic sea level curve. This study demonstrates the utility of the analysis of transgressive deposits and their paleoenvironmental characteristics for neotectonic investigations on active coasts.

Along the 500 km long eastern coastline of the North Island, New Zealand there are, at most, seven distinct Holocene marine terraces aged 7 ka B.P. or less. The highest of the terraces is 27 m above present-day mean sea level. The coastal region is subdivided into fourteen distinct subregions based on radiocarbon ages of marine deposits overlying wave-cut shore platforms and geographic distribution of similarly-aged terraces. Holocene marine terraces are the result of uplift associated with large earthquakes (co-seismic deformation). This conclusion is based on characteristic stepped terrace morphology, clustering of ages of terrace deposits within subrogions, and the occurrence of co-seismic uplift in historic time. Differential uplift across structures and distinct age variations at subregion boundaries are also characteristic. Recurrence intervals of uplift in any one terrace sequence vary from ∼ 0.4 ka to ∼ 2.0 ka, and individual amounts of uplift vary from ∼ 1.0 m to ∼ 4.0 m. In the past ∼ 2.5 ka ages from all terraces within subrogions indicate at least 21 paleoseismic events affecting coastal areas of eastern North Island in that period. These events cluster in time, and in separate parts of eastern North Island several earthquakes occurred ∼ 0.3, 0.6,1.0,1.5, 2.1 and 2.3 ka B.P. Our data strongly support the concept of segmentation of deformation along the subduction margin. The likely cause of coastal uplift is movement on steep reverse faults (local structures rather than the subduction thrust) that propagate from or near the subduction thrust some 20–25 km below the region. Earthquakes of moment magnitude 7.3–8.0 are estimated to be associated with these fault movements.

Depositional environments for Holocene terrestrial, estuarine, and marine sediments on the Wairoa River floodplain at Wairoa and coastal plain east of Wairoa, were determined from an analysis of stratigraphy, lithologies, and diatom assemblages obtained from auger holes and foundation and water-well drillholes. The sediments were deposited during the postglacial sea-level rise which started sometime prior to c. 9200 years ago and ended at c. 4000 years ago, when the shoreline was at least 2 km landward of the present position, and a ria-like morphology had developed at the innermost edge of the present-day coastal plain. The postglacial marine sediments usually occur slightly below the present sea level (down to -4 m a.m.s.l.) indicating net tectonic subsidence during the Holocene. Other evidence suggests that this tectonic subsidence may extend back into the middle Pleistocene.
