The authors analyze the natural history of massacre. It is inferred that it is a result of a long period of hostility between two groups due to a competition over scarce resources which will develop when average people lose control. They inferred that a surprise attack is the usual mode of launching massacre which represents an unfair way fighting. They included in their analysis the My Lai massacre in Vietnam, Wounded Knee in South Dakota, Sand Creek in Colorado, Elogeta River in New Guinea, and Beirut in Lebanon, since they found out that indiscriminate slaughters are redundant in these episodes.
