In the archives at AATCC headquarters is a small black memo book assembled by Charles H. Dalton during the years 1850 and 1851 when he was head of Hamilton Woolen Co. at Southbridge, Mass. The book contains printed samples of delaine fabrics accompanied by color recipes and their costings, a description of his visits to English printers in 1851, newspaper clippings, photographs and engravings. The recipes for print pastes involve the use of a wide range of natural dyes and mineral colors applied by the "steam style," although the two most famous natural dyes indigo and madder are absent. Details of preparation and print recipes from his own mill as well as from those in England allow a comparison of the techniques in use at the time. Some frank comments he makes about the companies he visited are revealing. Early recipe books from American mills are valuable research tools for the history of dyes and printing, an area In which there is growing interest.
