Herwig Maehler's argument that the literary cultures in Greek Hermopolis and Egyptian Oxyrhynchus are equally impressive and spirited cannot be either supported or discarded. The literary papyri received from Oyrhynchus is more substantial than the rather exhaustive collection from Hermopolis, suggesting that the literary texts vary quantitatively. There is a qualitative difference also, with 25% of the literary texts from Hermopolis dealing with Christianity, while that of Oxyrhynchus accounts for only 10% of the total literary papyri.
