Dr. Joanne Cacciatore is a research professor at Arizona State University, a bereavement educator, and the founder of the MISS Foundation. Her research focuses on traumatic grief and loss. In this interview, Dr. Cacciatore offers her thoughts on grief, some misconceptions, and her notion of fierce compassion. The interviewers and Dr. Cacciatore discuss how museums and museum educators can help people better understand grief both in their life and work.

This article introduces a Bauhaus design apprenticeship for first-semester German as a means of integrating multiple literacies and disciplines. In light of the need for interdisciplinary models of the multiliteracies framework in introductory-level language curricula, a collaboration with the campus makerspace can enhance the humanities' critical literacies mission in general and the language literacies mission in particular. In the case of German, Bauhaus offers not only a source of multimodal texts with significant cultural, historical, and political content but also a theory of design that resonates with the metalanguage of design in multiliteracies pedagogy. The article proposes a Bauhaus-multiliteracies framework and demonstrates its implementation through a "Bauhaus Lehre" in elementary German and the makerspace. Students learn the use of a simple Computer-Aided Design (CAD) program in an instructional sequence aimed at describing and transforming language and objects alike. Student products and the results of surveys conducted with the first two groups of learners to complete the project show that learners began to envision connections between language literacy and their digital and social futures.

Online open educational resources (OERs) offer promise for K-12 teaching and learning, and one subject area in which OERs might prove valuable is the social studies. In a recent study, the authors investigated how Websites of public history sites (physical locations, like Colonial Williamsburg and Mystic seaport) provide OERs. Their 66 Websites varied dramatically in the number of OERs offered, and innovators and early adopters differed in what they supplied. Few sites provided technologically sophisticated OERs, while text-based OERs and repurposed resources dominated. The article identifies exemplary online OERs and best practices for public history Websites and discusses how designers and developers might enhance OER offerings. (Contains 2 figures and 2 tables.)

Derives a new working definition of the term for ISA and a subject mapping of the field from both this review and from current technological advances. The overarching goal of the social studies curriculum is to promote civic competence and to develop students' ability to make informed and reasoned decisions as citizens in a diverse and democratic society within an interdependent world. Philosophically, citizenship is the goal of social studies. Involvement in social action is the key for young citizens to demonstrate that they have an understanding of the many faces of citizenship. As teachers develop and implement social studies curriculum, it is critical to accept and model the philosophical tenets and goals of the social studies within their classrooms. To promote democratic and pluralistic ideals, it is essential to study courageous role models in the elementary social studies curriculum. Social studies educators have an obligation to promote social justice education by providing a curriculum that educates, offers opportunities to practice social justice, and prompts students to rethink cultural and social stereotypes. Furthermore, teachers need to challenge students to evaluate terms that provoke gender-related barriers, prejudices, and stereotypical gender role conceptions. In this article, the lives of three women are discussed. The women include: (1) Charlotte Hawkins Brown; (2) Jesse Daniel Ames; and (3) Ida B. Wells-Barnett. Their lives and stories made a difference in history and can affect the lives of today's students by bringing the social studies curriculum to life.

Based on a national social studies survey that included over 10,000 respondents from 44 states, this study examined the emphasis on diversity of religious view (EDRV) in public school P-12 social studies classrooms. This article addresses the following research questions: (1) how do teachers of different subjects (economics, history, and civics) or courses (e.g., U.S. history and world history) compare in their relative EDRV; and (2) what is the association—if any—between the relative importance of cultivating critical thinking/decision-making skills as a primary purpose for teaching social studies and EDRV? Teachers of different social studies subject areas differed (F [6, 499]=13.83, p<0.001, η2=0.13), on their relative EDRV. There was also a positive relationship (F [4, 10,072]=115.83, p<0.001) between teachers who believe that the primary purpose for teaching social studies is the cultivation of critical thinking/decision-making skills and the frequency with which they emphasize diversity of religious views (EDRV). The article analyzes official reports of Sheridan's troops between September 26, 1864, and September 30, 1864, individual records of then-residents of Augusta County, Virginia, and the advancement of U.S. cavalry forces commanded by U.S. Army cavalryman Alfred Torbert.

After 36 years of working as a progressive educator in American schools, the author notes the near absence of joy, passion, and imagination that today's students experience. He asks, "Where's wonder?" In this essay, the author makes a case for the role of wonder in learning as he reflects on his work with schools and museum educators at the Columbus Museum of Art's Center for Creativity. After sharing his own perspectives on wonder, he further explores and frames the idea by reconsidering two concepts from two major philosophers and practitioners of progressive education: 1) the late progressive philosopher and physicist David Hawkins and 2) educator Eleanor Duckworth. Drawing inspiration from the preschools of Reggio Emilia, the author then makes a special case for wonder as a group endeavor that contributes to something larger than the individual. Background: Traditionally, in biomedical animal research, laboratory rodents are individually examined in test apparatuses outside of their home cages at selected time points. However, the outcome of such tests can be influenced by various factors and valuable information may be missed when the animals are only monitored for short periods. These issues can be overcome by longitudinally monitoring mice and rats in their home cages. To shed light on the development of home cage monitoring (HCM) and the current state-of-the-art, a systematic review was carried out on 521 publications retrieved through PubMed and Web of Science. Results: Both the absolute (~ × 26) and relative (~ × 7) number of HCM-related publications increased from 1974 to 2020. There was a clear bias towards males and individually housed animals, but during the past decade (2011–2020), an increasing number of studies used both sexes and group housing. In most studies, animals were kept for short (up to 4 weeks) time periods in the HCM systems; intermediate time periods (4–12 weeks) increased in frequency in the years between 2011 and 2020. Before the 2000s, HCM techniques were predominantly applied for less than 12 h, while 24-h measurements have been more frequent since the 2000s. The systematic review demonstrated that manual monitoring is decreasing in relation to automatic techniques but still relevant. Until (and including) the 1990s, most techniques were applied manually but have been progressively replaced by automation since the 2000s. Independent of the year of publication, the main behavioral parameters measured were locomotor activity, feeding, and social behaviors; the main physiological parameters were heart rate and electrocardiography. External appearance-related parameters were rarely examined in the home cages. Due to technological progress and application of artificial intelligence, more refined and detailed behavioral parameters have been investigated in the home cage more recently. Conclusions: Over the period covered in this study, techniques for HCM of mice and rats have improved considerably. This development is ongoing and further progress as well as validation of HCM systems will extend the applications to allow for continuous, longitudinal, non-invasive monitoring of an increasing range of parameters in group-housed small rodents in their home cages.
