Studies on immigrant women in the United States written by historians are characterized by four themes, making home, community building, memory and citizenship. Migration transforms as well as connects the United States and other countries around the world and a number of works written by various social scientists are highlighted to show the how women who migrated set up their homes, became Americanized, earned their livelihood and became assimilated in the new country.

Despite recent efforts to describe the changing relationship of the Atlantic to the wider world, scholars do not agree on the periodization of global integration and the end of the Atlantic's status as a unique macro-region. They do, however, agree that mass migratory flows are a constitutive element of global integration; some social sciences argue further that recent global integration has produced the feminization of migratory movements across all world regions. This paper traces the gender composition of long distance migrations from the early modern slave trades to the twentieth century. It finds convergence in gendered patterns of migration beginning already in the early twentieth century and argues that feminization of international migrations was complete by 1960. Global convergence toward gender balance in the twentieth century – commonly called feminization – was neither the product of predictable gender relations of power nor was it indicative of the feminization of the global – formerly understood as masculine realm of conflict – as a new domestic, cooperative space of female emancipation. While the figure of the female migrant does increasingly represent contemporary global migrations discursively, the iconic female is viewed as a victim of trafficking and exploitation. This paper makes novel use of digital archives and the history of publishing to reveal the previously unknown author of the first cookbook published by avonian in the Carolinas. The traditional tools of the culinary historian, including textual analysis and biogiaphical research, proved insufficient to identify the author of the Carolina Receipt 1300k (1832,). The researchers therefo, situated the cookbook within the social and intellectual milieu of antebellum Charleston—not only the traditional female networks of domestic literature and charitable works, but also the masculine politics of Nullification, slavery and states' rights, which led ultimately to the Civil War. The paper analyzes how an elite Southern family sought to erase the historical memory of the volume in order to assure cultural predominance for its own female members. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses public food selling and eating among Mexican communities in San Antonio, Texas, and southern Italian migrants in New York City, focusing on the period of the 1870s through the 1940s. It examines street food and restaurants. The authors comment on Italian eating and drinking establishments called tavernas and Mexican eating and drinking establishments called fondas. They also explore how differences in racialization and municipal governance impacted the public food cultures of these communities.
