Abstract

Wilbur Ripley Jacobs died on Jun 15, 1998, in a car accident near his home in San Gabriel, CA. He completed his education at the University of Califonia in Los Angeles. He joined the army during World War II as a non-combatant soldier, but abandoned that status when he learned about Nazi atrocities. After the war, he continued his education at Johns Hopkins University. Many students regarded Jacobs as an inspirational, approachable teacher.

Abstract

Those of us who knew, or knew of, Thomas A. Bailey, who died on July 26, 1983, at age eighty near Stanford University, probably remember him primarily as an historian who produced a mass of works which were often of impressive erudition but always of appealing readability.' As a writer he accomplished a great deal, but in total professional activity achieved much more. Throughout his academic life he exemplified what most of us would perceive as an ideal often greatly admired but rarely realized-that of a dedicated teacher-scholar who attracted a large popular following. He taught several thousand undergraduates and trained more than twenty doctoral candidates. He devoted himself to the study, teaching, and writing of history with a passion that diminished only with illness and the approach of death.2

In 1958, orjust about the time when I approached the end of my first decade as a professional historian and university teacher, Michael Oakeshott, the British scholar, published a perceptive essay on what it meant to be an historian. He labeled the writing of history a commonplace occupation and described it as "the product of a temperament which delights in the past, and for which the detachment, the immobility, the deadness and the irrelevance of the past are not defects to be removed, but blessed virtue to be enjoyed." He went on to attribute to history subtle feminine qualities evident in a special kind of woman whom the historian loves, "of whom he never tires, and whom he never expects to talk sense."'
