Abstract

The article compares the structure of the Geneva Bible to Massachusetts Governor John Winthrop's "city upon a hill" sermon. The author discusses the Puritan origins of American culture during the 17th century, argues that Winthrop derived his sermon from the Bible passage Galatians 5:13, and explores why many scholars believed Winthrop had used the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible.
