Between March and June of 1759, a general military campaign ("entrada general") towards Chaco was held by the Governance of Tucumán, Buenos Aires and Paraguay. Despite the high amount of documents that were produced at the moment -both written papers and maps- this event has aroused little interest in historiography. In this paper, we aim at reviewing this military campaign from a historico-anthropological approach that resituates the documents in their contexts of production, by considering the complex relationships that link empirical facts -the actions-, imaginaries -the representations- and what is registered in the documents -the discourses. In this way, we present an ethnographic interpretation of the military campaign that delves into the facts, the different actors' objectives and motivations, and the distinct interethnic scenarios that were developed on the borders of Chaco. In 1573, the Spanish Crown presented Friar Dionisio de Sanctis to occupy the episcopal see of Cartagena. Very early on, the prelate realized that it was not he who had the patronage of the San Sebastian Hospital, but the secular chapter. Thus, he filed a lawsuit against the municipal institution to recover the government of the hospital. Using the case file, the details of the lawsuit are presented and the speech of the response given by the city’s attorney general to the prelate’s demand is analyzed. In doing so, we seek to explain the role played by the bishops in the foundation and government of the colonial hospitals and some aspects of the functioning of the local justice system. It is hypothesized that with the appeal filed, the bishop sought to have the patronage of the hospital returned to him, just as his predecessors had held it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This essay presents an interdisciplinary investigation of the Atlantis-2 submarine fiber optic cable, with the aim of tracing the deep connections between the material in-frastructure of the internet, colonial history, mythology, and underwater ruins. By connecting and interpreting an array of historical, technical, and narrative elements surrounding Atlantis-2, this essay speculates on the multiple genealogies of submarine telecommunication cables. Beginning with a discussion of the route followed by Atlantis-2, the first section traces a connection between colonial and digital networks crossing the South Atlantic. The second section weaves a story linking the Atlantis-2 cable and the mythological city of Atlantis, proposing a possible future of the internet as an underwater ruin. The historical and mythological speculations presented in this paper highlight the colonial and material roots of submarine cables, and suggest a different way of investigating and relating to the material infrastructure of the internet as a fragile ecosystem to care for.

This article deals with the Inquisition in Brazil and the role of the inquisitors in the procedural modus operandi of the ecclesiastical Tribunal of the Holy Office of Lisbon. The source documents indicate part of what was the Portuguese inquisition in Brazil during the colonization process of the territory. It seeks to understand the rite of the process through the actions of the inquisitors, the highest office in the organisation of the Holy Office of the Portuguese Inquisition. With this objective, it was necessary to approach documental sources such as the regulation, the manual for inquisitors and the cases of those accused of various crimes during the Tribunal of Lisbon. The study was realised based on primary sources and illustrated by a case in the colony of Brazil, among many others, providing details about the diverse cases that were judged in the tribunal of the Holy Office of Lisbon, as the Portuguese colony did have its own court yet installed. It is hoped that this study inspires further investigations into the subject with an eye towards studying the most varied processes of the inquisition in Brazil during the colonial period. In order to understand the articulation between decoloniality and interculturality, it is necessary to analyze categories that include, on the one hand, historical aspects and, on the other hand, power relations and asymmetries. In this way, the need to assume a critical stance from the concepts of culture and coloniality becomes concrete. The objective of this article is to understand how western knowledge has generated a project of modernity, through discourses in which the construction of otherness goes through different processes of assimilation and incorporation of the other. These condition the adjustment of otherness, according to the dominant social standards, from essentialist conceptions, which ends in processes of differentiation and discrimination. The method used is the critical documentary review. The paper concludes that decolonization poses the challenge of dissociating itself from knowledge that distorts reality, and must distance itself from rationalities that fragment, classify, label and generate rhetoric with which social division is reinforced and segregation and exclusion are legitimized. In this article I trace the transnational history of Pakistan and Israel, focusing on the global politics of religion entailed therein. I study the often-overlooked intra-imperial dynamics and the ways in which these intersected with the colonial and post-colonial sociology of knowledge, the politics of cultural diversity and the changing international order. I illustrate how the census and the enumeration of minorities, the claim to political representation, and the transition from 'minority' to 'nation' shaped that which could be recognised as religious difference as well as the states defined by it. I thereby show how the colonial governmental logic that structured the minority politics of the British Indian Muslims and the Palestinian Jews both limited and enabled the claims to the nations and the states that came to replace them. The case study focuses on two key individuals in the history of the Indian and Palestine partition, and the Pakistani and Israeli independence that followed, Reginald Coupland and Muhammad Zafarullah Khan. I ask how they, the institutions they represented, and the ideas they carried, circulated and influenced changed over the final decade before independence. In the final part of the article, I argue that claims for the recognition of religion in international relations (IR) are not separate from these forms of colonial epistemological politics but are intimately connected to them. By studying the global, entangled politics of religion we can begin to understand the costs of its recognition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article analyses the social tensions in Cartagena de Indias in the mid-18th century as a result of the proliferation of Leprosy. These tensions, which stem from the religious imaginary around this evil, were juxtaposed with some practices that showed forms of social assimilation of the sick that in theory should be isolated. Therefore, exclusion and assimilation were practices towards the lepers that paradoxically framed in a complex way in the colonial Cartagena. The work has three moments: the first one mentions some explanations from the theoretical and contextual thing, for, in a second moment, to approach charity and degredo as social practices and thus, in third place, to pass to an analysis of the tensions from the concept of semiosphere of Yuri Lotman. INDIGENOUS peoples , *WORLD history , *HISTORIOGRAPHY , *LUTHERANS , *REFORMATION - Abstract
These days, the social sciences must circulate through the Islamic, African, Asian, and occidental worlds because the European discourse can no longer be seen as the universal discourse. In 1517, more than 500 years ago, the Lutheran Reformation fractured Europe. That very same year, the Spanish conquistadors took over Mexico, colonizing and christianizing it. They also introduced the way in which we write history. The conquerors were completely ignorant about the indigenous societies. However, in order to impose their laws, they had to learn about their customs and, therefore, the past of those they conquered. But, what is history and time in the mind of the indigenous peoples? Time was not yet a universal value. How could the Spaniards, formed in a Christian Europe where history was chronological and focused, understand and accept Mesoamerican cosmology? The civilized against barbarians? In a few decades, the «time machine» of the invadors was used to capture the memories of the Amerindian native societies in order to fabricate a past that could be linked with the ancient heritage of Christianity. The author offers an original exploration of the beginning of the colonial expansion and explains how across the territory, the religious and the indigenous peoples began to write a history of the world. This article studies the process of congregations among Muiscas in the province of Santafe during the 16th and 17th centuries. By examining archive documentation, the author limits and explores three specific moments: the configuration of the peoples, the creation of reservations, and the dynamics of aggregation. The article attempts to observe the adaptations made by the colonial administration in order to forge a new residential pattern guided by the evangelization of indigenous peoples and adjusted to the new order imposed by the encomienda. We also observe the economic, territorial, and sociopolitical transformations led by said process in this society. Abstract This article deals with the interpretation process carried out by the 16th century Salamanca School (Francisco de Vitoria, Domingo de Soto and Bartolomé de Las Casas), which was rooted in Thomistic Scholasticism, of the significance of the sins of the flesh attributed to the American Indians, and concluding that their past constituted part of world history revealed by God, and that those sins were signs of Christianity.

Climate change impacts are most severe in developing countries with limited adaptive capacity. Accordingly, in Africa, climate change adaptation has become an issue of international funding and practice. As suggested in the Introduction to this special issue, administrative traditions could play a role in how adaptation plays out. This, however, raises questions about how foreign funding regimes coincide with recipients' administrative traditions, especially on the African continent where administrative traditions are often meagerly established. To address these questions, this article takes an explorative approach. From a literature review of African state governance and development aid approaches, we take colonial legacy as the most distinctive factor responsible for African administrative traditions. In addition, we define three ways in which foreign aid programs have dealt with African administration: (1) aligning with donor administration, (2) blueprinting administration, and (3) ignoring administration. Using 34 African countries' National Adaptation Programmes of Action (NAPAs), we analyze how African governments actually frame adaptation as a governance challenge. We contrast these frames with: (1) administrative traditions based on colonial legacy and (2) the ways in which development aid programs have historically dealt with recipient African administrations. Our findings indicate that NAPAs only meagerly refer to the administrative tradition that could be expected based on colonial legacy, but extensively refer to blueprint ideas common among international donors, or ignore administration altogether. We discuss the implications for adaptation to climate change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract This article deals with the Inquisition in Brazil and the role of the inquisitors in the procedural modus operandi of the ecclesiastical Tribunal of the Holy Office of Lisbon.

Abstract This article analyzed the role of witchcraft and sorcery in the daily lives of some women of African origin in the Caribbean in the 17th century. From a cultural history approach, I addressed some files of the Inquisition of Cartagena, through which these women were prosecuted, given the fact that various magical practices used in everyday life were exposed within them. The conclusion reached was that the different actions used to survive and conquer a place of social recognition, made it possible for them to weave support networks and establish a circulation of knowledge with other women of similar qualities, although these very practices supposed a risk of being taken before the inquisitorial justice.

The PhD project Siblings Overseas aims to contribute to the global urban history of Hispanic grid cities, building connections between practices, morphologies, and ideas from both shores of the Atlantic Ocean. This line of research has its precedent in the previous work Granada Des-Granada, published in Colombia in 2018 (Ed. Uniandes), which offered a survey on Muslim medinas and the evolution of Christian grid cities between the 11th and 15th centuries. Siblings Overseas takes over where Granada Des-Granada ended and focuses on grid cities founded in Spanish domains during the early modern period. After the first fortified settlements in the American coastline were created, the 16th century brought diverse transformations to Spanish colonial new towns both in the Iberian Peninsula, the Mediterranean, and the American frontier. Urban laws and foundational acts gained relevance, shifting the main urban efforts in America from fortified positions in the early 1500s to open grid cities in the 1530s. Despite the ample literature studied this phenomenon in America, its presence in Europe and the Mediterranean has received less attention. Spanish archives conserve original 16th-century settlement books and logs of several cities founded in the Iberian south and the former Andalusian frontier, which have been studied and transcribed by local historians who signaled their familiarity with their American sisters. No comparative analysis has been developed in this sense, keeping these "Andalusian colonies" away from international historiography. The objective of this dissertation is to present an in-depth comparative study of European and American urban plantation protocols, focusing on unfortified new towns whose foundational processes evolved during the 16th century. The general hypothesis is that Spanish practices for the plantation of cities in Europe and America present a set of shared aspects based on their common frame of laws, institutions, agents, and beliefs. These elements were in constant evolution in both shores of the Atlantic due to their dynamic socio-political situation. Their similarities and differences have been studied and evidenced through the analysis of primary written sources, historical cartographies, and detailed foundational records. The urban grid is the most visible of these cities’ traits, even an archetypical one; but it did not operate by itself. The evidence presented in Siblings Overseas show that there was no pre-established model for all these new towns around the global Spanish Empire, but a shared set of urban protocols organically applied in diverse contexts. The leading case of study in this project is the foundational process of four new towns in Sierra Sur de Jaen (Andalusia), which took place between 1508 and 1539 and includes the settlements of Mancha Real, Valdepeñas de Jaén, Los Villares, and Campillo de Arenas. Sierra Sur was the main friction point between the kingdoms of Jaen and Granada during the last centuries of the Reconquista, making it a strategic territory for colonization after the Granada War (1582-92). Available primary sources are mainly written documents: instructions for founding agents, judicial processes, lawsuits over land rights, independence privileges, etc. Only one of the four foundational plans survives but is well conserved and show with precision the layout of streets and the distribution of urban parcels. American cases include two cities, both influenced by urban principles stated in the Indies Laws. This legal body reunites edicts from the earliest 16th century until its publication in 1681, each with its respective date and ordering king/queen. Its analysis shows how Laws enacted by monarchs like the Catholic Kings, Juana I, Charles V, and Philip II recommend the same principles and rules for America as those applied in Sierra Sur. However, official records and foundational plans of most early Spanish colonial settlements have not survived. The oldest partition plan conserved of an American foundation is the one of Mendoza, first Spanish city in the province of Cuyo (1561-2), originally under the jurisdiction of Capitanía General de Chile and later included in the Viceroyalty of La Plata (Argentina). Mendoza was founded in two acts, with plans and written records conserved for each of them at the Archivo General de Indias (Seville). The second American case is Villa de Leyva in the Kingdom of New Granada (Colombia), firstly planted in 1572 and then moved in 1582. The foundational acts conserved for this city are some of the oldest in Colombia and South America. Based on work of restoration of time series of some important economic variables that extend from 1720 to 1822, the paper aims to contribute to a vision of the Amazonian colonial economy that emphasizes the global context - it means a demonstrated ability to assert itself as sub-system of the Portuguese Colonial Empire in the context of world market. In discussing this capacity, the article evaluates the evolution of fundamental conditions of efficiency of the colony, considering them as determined by the peculiar features that assumed the local operation of the colonial project in Grão-Pará. These conditions, strongly characterized by the uniqueness of the natural foundations of the Amazonian biome, are evaluated in reference to the institutional changes that mark in time the trajectory of the regional economy and society.

Throughout the colonial period a memory of the history of the Andean tribes was created. This memory considered the Inca empire as its main reference and the Inca as its natural symbol. From the narration of the facts of the Inca history, particularly those referring to the Spanish conquest, sprang up the myth of the Inca death to which contributed both conquerors and those who were conquered. During the eighthteenth century the death of the Inca was presented in numerous theatrical performances accompanied with music. The codex Martínez Compañón (1782-85) consists of nine volumes with about 1500 color plates depicting different aspects of both the social life and the natural phenomena of the Trujillo zone in Peru. Thirty eight plates, included in volume II, are related directly or indirectly with music of oral tradition of the period. The original folio numbers of these plates are all preceded by the letter E, standing for '"estampa" (plate). A total of twenty scores appear between E. 176 though E. 193. Judging from the title the text of the following two tunes -"E 188: Allegro tonada El tupamaro, Caxamarca" and "E. 191 (b): Adagio tonada el Tuppamaro de caxamarca"- could be related to the events of Cajamarca leading to the capture and death of Inca Atahualpa. The same volume II contains two other plates depicting the beheading of the Inca: "Danza de la degollación del Inga E 172; E173". Ifthis were the case these two tunes could be the only remaining musical fragments of the theatrical performances mentioned above. As a result of the analysis of these two scores we discovered that they could bear a relationship with other scores of the same codex on the basis of musical or text analogies which could be traced back to the tragic events of Cajamarca. These scores are the following: "E. 191, Magestuoso Cachua la Despedida de Guamachuco"; "E. 190 Allegro tonada la brugita para cantar de Guamachuco" and "E. 187. Andantino Tonada ElDiamante, para baylar de Chachapoyas". However our main interest was not to ascertain whether some "tonadas" of the codex could have been part of a theatrical performance of the capture and death of Atahualpa at the end of the colonial period. Indeed we are interested in interpreting these chants as bearing signs of a colonial discourse in two different aspects. On the one hand, the reinterpretation of such historical facts as the capture and death of Atahualpa, and on the other the lingering on of Andean codes in the remembrance of certain rituals such as the "ceremonial grieving". For the sake of musical analysis it was established the existence of a mode conceived initially as part of a system of modes of theInca era related to the system of European church modes. We have named this mode as "Inca grieving" and we will consider its relationships with the ceremonial grieving of the times of the incas as well as its role in the transmission of meanings related to the colonial Andean rituals.

This article intends to analyse how the relations between the dictatorial Portuguese government and the Portuguese shipping companies (Companhia Nacional de Navegação and Companhia Colonial de Navegação) were defined in the context of the 1929 crisis and the Great Depression, as well as the social and political consolidation of the new regime. By declaring the Portuguese merchant fleet to be of national interest, the Estado Novo conceived and established a system of public service that was applied to the exclusive exploitation of its African colonies. From there, we will see how this system was adopted and how it was characterised. Secondly, we will identify the mechanisms that were used to guarantee the dictatorial interference of the state in the Portuguese shipping companies and its reception by these companies.

The content of these pages centers in trying to depict if archaeological Las Mercedes and the documentary settlement of Suerre coincide. We use an interdisciplinary approach with ethnohistory, geography, linguistics, and archaeology to try to demonstrate it could very well be the same place. Even if the evidence contrasted builds a strong case to show it can very well be the same place, more research must be undertaken to demonstrate the proposition.
