This study explores development of the Greater Bay Area (GBA) as it aspires to become a leading international education hub, set against the backdrop of established hubs in Malaysia, Qatar and the San Francisco Bay Area. Through a comparative analysis grounded in an adapted George Keller framework, the research investigates the internal and external dynamics influencing the internationalization strategies of these regions. The findings highlight the critical role of leveraging unique regional identities, navigating global trends alongside local adaptations and prioritizing collaboration over competition. Interviews with experts within the GBA provide formative insights into the necessary steps for advancing its internationalization, including the need for a unified regional strategy, addressing systemic and policy barriers and fostering a unique cultural identity. The study contributes to both theoretical and policy discourses on higher education internationalization by offering a comprehensive framework for understanding and analysing strategic development in emerging education hubs. It underscores the importance of adaptive strategies that are responsive to global educational trends, rooted in local strengths and geared towards fostering collaborative, innovative ecosystems. The GBA's journey towards internationalization exemplifies the challenges and opportunities faced by new entrants in the global education arena, providing valuable lessons for other regions with similar aspirations. Chinese students represent a substantial portion of the UK university student population, with most of them being postgraduates. However, whilst the UK remains a top choice for Chinese students seeking to complete a higher degree programme, competition within the global Higher Education (HE) landscape is intensifying. Consequently, popular HE destinations such as the USA and the UK must now contend with growing academic markets in Australia and New Zealand (Marginson, 2006) as well as some non-English speaking countries which offer appealing university degrees through English-Medium-Instruction (EMI) (Mok, 2007). It is therefore salutary to ensure that Chinese students continue to find the UK appealing. This is vitally important both for the economy and the intellectual diversity and talents these students bring to UK HE institutions. This study thus revisits the core motives which drive Chinese students to UK universities. Significantly, unlike other investigations which have treated the topic of motivation rather marginally and through broad research scopes, this paper uses a 'small-lens approach' (Ushioda, 2016), which here is operationalised through the combination of practitioner research and narrative analysis. The study therefore focuses on a small group (N = 16) of Chinese students to unpack the nuances of meaning which characterise their initial motivation to study in Britain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pursuing education overseas is a high impact practice in higher education. Students who identify as LGBTQIA + —commonly referred to as "queer," an umbrella term—may be more likely to participate yet face additional unique challenges. Using a systematic review of literature across multiple disciplines, this paper explores LGBTQIA + students' motivations, identity development, and university experiences while participating in education overseas. It also aims to define the term queer international student and examines the theoretical frames used to understand this population in the literature. Findings show that literature carves out a composite of students who view, and sometimes actively seek, overseas education to develop themselves, express their identities, and live in communities that are more welcoming and safer than those at home. However, they also face conflict in English language classrooms, on campuses, and with their families as they navigate expectations, with some switching between cisheteronormative and queer identities in different communities. On university campuses, scholars noted, queer international students can be viewed singularly as international students, with their sexual orientations and other intersectional identities going unrecognized or being erased. Moreover, higher education scholars and practitioners often do not designate—or perhaps exclude—international students in studies and programming for LGBTQIA + students. As a result, queer international students may not feel like they belong in any group and risk being double-marginalized in higher education. In the historical higher education (HE) context of early post-independence Africa, little was done to unpack or critique the dominant notion of African universities as "developmental" and to create workable models for the future. The resultant conflictual role of African universities, caught between the demands of academic excellence, on the one hand, and local demands of development and regional and communal impact, on the other, have not yet been adequately resolved. Conceptually and organisationally, "engagement", "transfer" and "outreach" activities serve as mechanisms to bridge the divide between the traditional academy and the needs and expectations of societal stakeholders located outside of formal HE structures. This is now often referred to as the third mission (TM) of HE, the first and second missions being teaching and research. In recent years, many of the existing DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) African Centres of Excellence (ACE) have established partnerships and networks with actors from the political, social and economic sector to increase their relevance and impact in their regions, especially relating to Sustainable Development Goals. Against this backdrop, a qualitative exploratory study was conducted to determine the experiences and perceptions of participating representatives from ten ACE, located in their different and specific regional and societal contexts, about their university-society community engagement (CE) or TM activities. This article reports on the findings of this study, which contributes to the larger aims of identifying long-term synergies and collaboration potential and the development of conceptual models that are scalable. The Fulbright Program is the United States’ flagship educational exchange program. Since 1946, the program has been heralded as a program that promotes mutual understanding across cultures. However, the Fulbright Program’s role as a U.S. Department of State initiative warrants further examination of how this educational exchange program functions as a foreign policy effort on behalf of the United States. This mixed methods study uses data presented in five years of data available in the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board’s Annual Reports of the program. The study finds seven themes present in the written content of the annual report: Human rights, peace and security; access, diversity, and opportunity; collaboration and partnership; mutual financial investment; excellence as a result of Fulbright; program impact; and solving global problems. Germany, Jordan, and Lebanon's social, political, and socio-economic structures are influenced by a long history of them receiving refugees and migrants. This was a starting point for the University of Applied Sciences Würzburg (Germany), the German Jordanian University, Yarmouk University (Jordan), and the Lebanese University to engage in an intercultural and professional exchange project on social work in the field of (forced) migration. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) served as a conceptual framework to examine the lives of refugees, community development and social cohesion in receiving societies, and the role of social work in this context. The project concept focused on engaging in cultural dialogue, linking theory to practice, and fostering academic exchange through research projects. The paper provides practical insights into and reflections on the international dialogue project that proved to be an insightful learning experience for students and staff even in exceptional times of crises, exploring the relevance of SDGs for a profiled social work profession and scientific discipline. The future of international education and academic student and scholar exchange is bright. Though the term “virtual” transformed from an adverb to a noun since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic two years ago, our belief is that international educational exchange in all its forms will continue. This essay outlines the importance and need for internationalization on U.S. higher education campuses throughout and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic, learnings from the last two years from U.S. higher education institutions, and critical considerations regarding the future of international educational exchange. In academic research laboratories, well-organized group meetings are common training tools that can benefit individuals and the group as a whole. Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, virtual meetings have become an increasingly important format for research group meetings. Virtual meeting formats also offer an important and underappreciated advantage: ease of collaboration with researchers at other (potentially distant) institutions. Herein, we describe the strategies we employed to facilitate engaging and productive online meetings and academic exchanges between environmental chemistry/engineering laboratories at a primarily undergraduate program and a doctoral research intensive institution. Over a period of 12 months, six intermural group meetings were held through videoconference. All meetings consisted of two segments: (1) a literature or research discussion and (2) a professional development session that emphasized topics such as navigating life after completing a bachelor's degree, advice on securing graduate school admission and funding, and characteristics of effective instructors (from the undergraduate perspective). Student-led discussion of scientific literature and research is valuable in enhancing trainees' communication skills, interdisciplinary perspectives, and critical reading of the literature. Professional development sessions facilitate unique opportunities for professional mentorship. Given the substantial pedagogical and other professional benefits of intermural group meetings, we recommend this meeting format as a useful training tool for research trainees even after the current pandemic wanes. We examine the choices of undergraduate students at a French university who are competing for seats at foreign universities to fulfill a mandatory exchange program requirement. We find that average- and high-ability female students request universities that are worse-ranked than their male peers. A survey eliciting students' preferences suggests that male students prioritize the academic characteristics of exchange universities, whereas similar female students consider both the academic and non-academic characteristics of exchange destinations. We explore the consequences of these differing preferences using a simulation that assigns students to exchange seats solely on university ranking and students' academic performance. Introduction. The number of international students who make university exchanges in Chilean universities has increased considerably. A large number of them come from countries whose native language is not Spanish. Objectives. To know the difficulties of international students (from three disciplinary fields: Humanities, Social Sciences, and Engineering) as perceived by academics, and define the representative academic genres that students should produce during the university exchange. Materials and methods. A quantitative study using a descriptive transectional design was carried out by applying an online questionnaire to 44 academics from a Chilean university. Results. The main difficulty observed by the academics corresponds to a deficient Spanish level, and regarding the representative genres that they must produce, in the written genres stand out: essay (Human Sciences) and laboratory report (Sciences of Engineering) and in oral genres: debates (Human Sciences) and oral presentation (Sciences of Engineering and Human Sciences). Conclusion. Universities need to define and require a Spanish level that allows international students (non-native Spanish) to perform sufficiently in the academic field. Based on data from the "2014 Chinese University Faculty Survey," this article analyzes the distribution characteristics and manifestations of internationalization from returnee faculty to Chinese colleges as well as their impacts on the internationalization of higher education in the three dimensions of scientific research output, teaching content and methods, and international exchanges. Compared to local teachers, returnee faculty members adjust their research output strategies to reach a higher level of internationalization. They favor publishing papers in international journals and publish fewer domestic papers and make fewer domestic patent applications. They focus on international perspectives and content in their course teaching content and methods. In terms of international exchanges, they participate in international academic conferences and travel abroad more often for advanced studies. Their experiences studying overseas accumulate their comparative advantage in the internationalization of the academic profession. Higher education institutions should make them play larger roles in promoting the internationalization of scientific research and teaching as well as international academic exchanges to improve the level of internationalization of Chinese higher education. The article presents the analysis of the Ukrainian state policy in the field of higher education in terms of its integration into the global educational space. The process of management and financing of Ukrainian higher education institutions, the quality and quantity of teaching staff, the ratio of the number of teaching staff, and students are considered. The authors determine the reasons for the slow integration of Ukrainian higher education into the global educational space, low ratings of Ukrainian higher education institutions in the world ranking of universities. The main problems of Ukrainian higher education institutions are inadequate financing from the state budget, restriction of their autonomous right to set the rules, the decrease in the number of students, and the growing quantity of lecturers which exceeds the number of students in higher education institutions. The authors made recommendations for improving the quality and competitiveness of Ukrainian higher education in the world. Among them, in particular, are developing criteria for forming a rating of higher education institutions in Ukraine that will coincide with the world and European requirements, increasing academic exchanges with the world's leading universities, forming an effective model of state policy for the development of higher education in Ukraine focused on improving the institutional and organizational structure. This paper examines the international education market and Australia's significant and growing involvement. Whilst much research has been carried out, it is less common for this research to be undertaken from the perspective of those who have yet to make the decision to study abroad. This study examines Indonesia, which was once a prominent source country for Australian international students. Student intention to study in Australia is examined through the Theory of Planned Behavior. Both qualitative and quantitative studies identify several factors influencing students' study intentions. Significantly, this study explores the concept that cultural ethnicities may be a better indicator of student intention, than the commonly held demarcation of political boundaries. Using Indonesia as an example, it is shown that country alone may not always be the best indicator of a homogeneous unit that demonstrates similar homogenous cultural traits. Higher education in Asia is massifying at an exceptional pace and scale. In this paper, I ask how practices and discourses which inform the internationalization of Singapore's higher education can provide opportunities for developing cosmopolitan learning that it claims to provide. Cosmopolitan learning is closely related to cross-border student mobility and plays an important role in shaping the international students' identities, aspirations and worldviews. Based on a recent study in Singapore of a group of international students from various parts of Asia and Europe, this paper attempts to bring the theoretical and grounded realities of cosmopolitan learning in an Asian context into the fore. The aim of the paper is to provide a useful frame for rethinking the purpose of international education for cosmopolitan learning in an increasingly interconnected world that is strewn with ambivalence, and what that means in the context of Singapore as an erudite nation-state critical to building Asian education hub aspirations. Learning through the use of mobile or portable devices (Mobile Learning or mlearning), is the type of learning that takes place at any time and geographical location and is supported by a device that simulates computer-like functions. Researches about the use of smartphones and tablets in higher education have studied the effectiveness of mobile devices in learning. Other researches have focused on the percentage of students owning and using smartphones and tablets for academic purposes, as well as on problems or barriers recognized by them in the use of mobile devices, during their studies. Although mobile devices play an active role in both daily life and learning process, research data on higher education in Greece, so far, is limited. Through this research we look forward to enhancing the debate on the use of mobile devices as learning tool and during the educational process in higher education. The present study investigates views of students from the University of Patras on the educational utilization of mobile devices. For this purpose, a questionnaire was created through the GoogleForms online application and was administrated from April to May 2018. This study involved 98 students from various schools, Humanities and Social Sciences (49%), Engineering (19.4%), Economics & Business (15.6%), Natural Sciences (9.2%) and Health Sciences (6.8%). Regarding the use and availability of mobile devices (smartphones/ tablets), we deduced that almost all students possess a smartphone. It is a fact that we have passed from the era of tablets and laptops to the era of smartphones, bearing in mind that the capabilities of the latter are at least similar to those of tablets and many computers. Regarding the applications most frequently used on their smartphone or tablet to support their studies, students stated that they mainly use PDF reader, email, Facebook, learning management systems such as eclass and google. The above applications are used for communication purposes, to exchange academic notes and for course information (syllabus, exam topics, notes). Concerning the problems faced by students in the educational utilization of their mobile devices, the majority of them stated that the most important problem is that in many classes there is no wi-fi coverage and even if wi-fi is provided, the speed is very slow, followed by the lack of suitable applications to support learning and teaching. Most students recognize that mobile devices enhance their flexibility about learning, providing more degrees of freedom to them. They mentioned that mobile devices contribute to the way they learn as well as provide liberty about the place and the time they choose to spend on learning. However, almost half of them admit that using mobile devices could cause problems in the educational process, both for tutors as well as for themselves. The main problem in the use of mobile devices for educational purposes for students are their distraction by aimlessly surfing the internet, and for the university tutors, the fact that some of them are unfamiliar with technology, so that they cannot take advantage of it. Given students' views on how mobile devices contribute to the way they learn, we believe that mobile devices can support distance learning as well. We also consider that mobile applications designers could create environments that mediate the learning process, permitting the mobile usage in class for learning purposes. These environments could restrict the use of various applications (access to specific websites, social media, games, etc.) that seem to distract the student and generally create problems in the educational process. The article focuses on building an adaptive transfer culture in California. Topics discussed include Santa Barbara City College is one of four community colleges working with a regional university partner, CSUCI, to develop guided curricular transfer pathways for students to transfer to upper-division study; and iPATH's instructional faculty involvement with the RTF program started as a collaborative professional development opportunity to discuss pedagogical techniques.

International education is widely recognised as providing a range of positive outcomes for students, universities, and both the source and destination countries. New Zealand politicians, however, see international education as a means of generating significant export earnings able to subsidise the local provision of university education. New Zealand universities have been criticised as underperforming in comparison to their Australian counterparts in attracting revenue from international students. This article explores the evidence of that observation by examining the patterns of enrolment by international students in New Zealand and Australian universities. The analysis identifies significant drivers of the international student enrolments in Australia and discusses potential strategic and policy implications for international education in New Zealand that respond to these drivers. In this article, we develop a genealogy of international education studies' tenets of culture shock and skills deficit. To trace their emergence, we map the discursive shifts which underpinned cultural anthropology's involvement in the administration of US colonial, domestic, and international affairs respectively in the early 1900s and 1950s. These shifts are concomitantly linked to the formation of the field of intercultural communication, of which popularisation in the form of Hofstede model of "cultural distance" has structured international education when turning from a Cold War tool of total diplomacy to an export industry. Taking the development of international education in Australia as a case study, we demonstrate how the shifts in the disciplinary fields aforementioned are best understood as an anti-racist strategy, which mobilisation of the concept of culture has led to the paradoxical evacuation of the heuristic of race from the lexicon of intercultural contact between "Asian" international students and presumably white host institutions. Malaysia and China have established formal diplomatic relations since 31 May 1974. The bilateral relations between Malaysia and China are well developed in the economic and trade fields, followed by tourism. Therefore, there are many records and studies on these aspects. However, in a recent development, the bilateral relation in the field of education has become more and more important, thus the bilateral educational exchanges between Malaysia and China has become the focus of this writing. This article has two main objectives, firstly, to elaborate the background of Malaysia-China relations; and secondly, to examine the achievement of educational exchange between Malaysia and China since 1974, especially on the higher education aspect. Primary data for this study were collected through interviews and a total of ten informants were selected based on purposive sampling and snowball sampling. Meanwhile, secondary data were collected from journal articles, reports, and websites. Both data were analyzed using content analysis. The findings of this study indicate that, due to the ideological issue, Malaysia and China did not have any actual contact until 1989 when the issue of the Communist Party of Malaya was solved. However, the development of Malaysia-China relations was initially slow until the rise of China and the promotion of the "Belt and Road Initiative," when the relations between the two countries entered the most splendid period in history. Nevertheless, the rapid development of Malaysia-China relations has caused some controversial voices among Malaysians. Malaysia and China began to conduct educational cooperation officially after they signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on education cooperation in 1997. In addition, mutual recognition of academic higher education qualifications was finally resolved when the two countries signed the Framework Agreement to Facilitate Mutual Recognition in Academic Higher Education Qualifications in 2011. Along with the economic globalization, international competition is becoming more and more intense and internationalization of higher education has become an irresistible trend. Cultivation of international talents has become the only way for the development of a country. Internationalization of higher education in China is speeding up with the proposal of policy of "the Belt and Road" and "Double First-Class University Plan". This study explores the relationship between internationalization of higher education and the further study trend of overseas students, and analyzes it with the case of university. The ways to promote internationalization of higher education are given. The results show that the total number of overseas students and the number of students studying in China have increased rapidly in recent years, and the number of Confucius Institutes established abroad has exceeded 550. China has made great efforts to improve the guarantee system for internationalization of higher education, the management system of overseas students and international academic exchanges, and has put forward many ways to solve the existing problems. Safety science is a distinct, multidisciplinary activity in the academic community with abundant scientific connotation. Safety Science in China, especially in Chinese higher education, has developed rapidly in the past 20 years and its development process is affected by some factors including national laws and policies, economic development and administrative system. In this paper, firstly, the development process and significant events of safety science in abroad and domestic is reviewed. Secondly, education condition about safety discipline in higher education institutions is analyzed, mainly including education institutes, research fields, curriculum provision, employment, vocational situation, and academic exchange. Then discussing how the three factors influence the development of safety discipline. The results show that 1999 is a demarcation point for the development process of safety science in China. Until 2016, there are 183 higher education institutions established safety discipline with different research fields. The focus of safety professionals’ cultivation has gradually expanded from technical competence to the promotion of comprehensive ability and quality. Influenced by economy, the number of universities establishing safety discipline decreased from southeast coast to central region, to western region, and its research fields are basically consistent with the local prop industries. Furthermore, in order to solve the main problem of single industrial research field of safety discipline, Chinese universities should propose new research directions, improve discipline contents and make further efforts to soften the industrial effect of safety discipline. This study examined self-efficacy and language strategy use of college-level English Language Learners (ELLs) at a southeastern university in the United States. It analyzed the relationship between self-efficacy and strategy use. An English Language Learning Survey was used to collect data from 198 college-level ELLs. Participants had positive self-efficacy toward their English learning and the most often used strategies were compensation, social and metacognitive strategies. Self-efficacy was positively correlated with cognitive, compensation, memory, metacognitive, and social strategy. The study suggested that teachers provide scaffolding for ELLs through strategy instruction. Teachers can teach self-regulated learning strategies and focus on ELLs' improvement and mastery of content to enhance their self-efficacy, language proficiency and learning autonomy required for their academic courses learning. Student mobility is becoming a prominent phenomenon of tertiary education in the twenty-first century. Internationally mobile students’ lived experiences are intimately linked to their potential to exercise agency in transnational mobility. However, the notion of agency within the context of student mobility has not been the explicit focus of theoretical and empirical investigation. This article examines how international student agency is affecting and is affected by their experiences in transnational mobility. This process is conceptualized as “agency in mobility” in this article. Based on theoretical discussions and an empirical study that draws on interviews with 105 international students, this article shows that “agency in mobility” underscores not only the response to a temporal particular need but importantly produces spaces in which international students can potentially transform their present, their future beings and the communities with which they interact. Employing agency theory and positioning theory as conceptual frameworks, the research suggests four primary forms of “agency in mobility”:agency for becoming,needs-response agency,agency as struggle and resistanceandcollective agency for contestation. In recent years, supervising international research students has attracted increasing attention from academics in English-speaking countries such as Australia. In the field of international education, the importance of understanding linguistic and cultural diversity of students has been widely accepted and emphasised by academic staff members who are supervising international research students. In Australia, progress has made on research on PhD studies in the area of analysing reports of thesis examinations and psychological changes of PhD candidates in general. However, the majority of supervisors have paid attention to the students' linguistic deficiency in thesis writing instead of promoting cultural awareness of how to conduct a research in a new learning environment in comparison with that of their home countries. This article reports on a qualitative investigation on international students' experience during their research training with an aim to identify clearly the cultural dimension of understanding on major issues of conducting a PhD research at an Australian university. On the basis of the findings revealed by this research, the supervisors' role is re -interpreted. The article proposes a "3-I model" of supervision, which consists of instruction, inspiration, and interaction during the development of research training of international students. Especially in recentyears, it is began to seen that Turkey become to a more effective position in the field of economic, social and cultural field in the World and our country is among the priority countries in which students from different countries want to study where it is particularly relevant in terms of history and culture. However, reading in a foreign country undoubtedly brings with it some difficulties. In order for the students to benefit from the educational opportunities in Turkey at the highest level, studies should be carried out to identify and eliminate the problems they have experienced. In this direction, this study aims to examine the reasons for students' preferring Turkey and to determine the difficulties encountered that Turkish native foreign students who come to education faculties for higher education. The research, which was carried out by adopting qualitative research approach, was carried out with 18 students studying at Ömer Halisdemir University Faculty of Education. The research data were collected by a questionnaire form and semi-structured interviews. At the end of the research, it has been revealed that most of the students were satisfied with the program and they make their living by working. The main reasons to prefer Turkey for higher education are; more qualified education, liking and curiosity of Turkey, the possibility of having a good job and cultural similarities. It is also obtained from this study that economic problems are the most common problems faced by many students. In this direction, it is suggested to increase the scholarship opportunities for students who want to study with their own possibilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the context of globalisation, higher education institutions not only have to be global in their internal practices, but also have to appear as international hubs to their constituencies. International partnership has been an essential part of these strategies. Partnerships help institutions in creating practices that are costly, as well as enhancing reputation by partnering with prestigious schools. Moreover, different spectrums of partnerships require varying degrees of commitment. Noting that the motivation for and engagement in partnerships is particularly strong in business, and the region of Latin America as well as Asia and Oceania, this study attempts to depict how institutions engage internationalisation, revealed as the exchange network and dual degree network of the 20 best MBA programmes in the two regions. Employing social network analysis, we found that schools have different levels of engagement in building partnerships and the region and reputation of schools matter for partnerships. Top-ranked MBA programmes tend to have more exchange partners and have a higher level of popularity in the exchange network. The dual degree network was more restricted in terms of the number, country, and prestige. Asian and Oceanian MBA programmes tend to have more exchange partners but are less likely to engage in dual degree partnerships, compared to the Latin American MBA programmes. Some institutions focus their dual degree network on a particular region. As higher education institutions actively engage in various types of collaborations, the findings provide meaningful implications for understanding the patterns of international partnership among higher education institutions. International exchanges and travel and study projects have been gaining popularity in many fields including social work. Embedded in a group context, the success of these initiatives depends heavily on the group process of all members involved. This article analyzes the impact group dynamics have on an international travel and study project that brought 11 doctoral students and their dean from Ethiopia for a one-month experiential education program. A model of group development, which emphasizes behavioral outcomes in groups (forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning), is presented as an organizing framework. The discussion draws on a qualitative analytical study, which revisits Tuckman's model, and proposes a revised model that defines group development stages by individual, group, purpose, and work concerns that drive conflict throughout all group stages. Implications for social work education include de-emphasizing stages of group development, being mindful about what is known about small groups, and improving empirical research and training for leading international groups. This study analyzed the Collective Action for the Mobility Program of University Students in Asia (CAMPUS Asia) program, whose initiation in the Northeast Asia region was agreed upon for political reasons by the leaders of the Republic of Korea (ROK), Japan, and China. The program is significant due to the current rapid marketization of East Asia's higher education exchange. Accordingly, this study examines CAMPUS Asia as a top-down exchange and explains how the program enables the institutionalization of a trilateral relationship, promotion of mutual understanding, and identity change. It is hoped that the utilization of one-on-one interviews with participant students in particular will enhance the academic contribution of the paper. Moreover, the conclusion explains the current issues of political instability and imbalanced participation the program faces, and suggests measures to overcome these issues. Through this discussion, it is expected that a vision will be produced whereby the CAMPUS Asia program will go beyond its current pilot phase and develop into a stable program. A gap exists in the research literature as to why international higher education students from Europe choose to study in Singapore. This paper aims to make a contribution to the research literature by presenting the findings of interviews conducted with students from Europe studying at a large Australian higher education campus in Singapore. Findings from the research show that higher education institutions in Asia have become a viable alternative for some European higher education students to the traditional study destinations of their home countries in Europe. Factors influencing students' choice of study destination as well as reasons for their choice of a higher education institution are discussed. Based on the analyses of these findings, suggestions for future policy and practice are offered to strengthen this growing area not only in Singapore but also throughout Asia as well. This paper describes an initiative to improve social work education in Vietnam through a three-year international collaborative, including US Aid for International Development, San José State University, eight universities in Vietnam, Vietnam's government ministries, and Cisco Systems, Inc. The social work profession was officially recognized by the Vietnamese government in 2010. Despite the rapid expansion of social work education programs, there are significant limitations in the universities' ability to provide social work education. The goal of the Social Work Education Enhancement Program (SWEEP) is to strengthen the capacity of Vietnam's undergraduate social work programs to deliver quality education and prepare trained, job-ready social workers. The SWEEP project aims to improve the administration of social work education, the professional capacity of faculty, social work curriculum, and networking technology to enable centers for excellence in learning and scholarship. To ensure that the SWEEP team targeted training and technical assistance activities that were culturally congruent, a comprehensive needs assessment and frequent mid-course evaluations were conducted, showing many shared and unique contextual issues facing universities. The collaborative process of developing social work education which fits the local context can be replicated in other countries that are in the early stages of social work development. The triad of cooperation, international exchange, and integration among institutions of higher education has become the new norm in the global experience of learning and academic training. The goal of improving and standardising the academic experience across countries is now typically also associated with fostering cultural and political ties and complementing processes of cultural integration and economic growth. Behind the rhetoric of many new initiatives, however, is a competition of geopolitical proportions, in which various national or regional systems of higher education try to shore up their positions or conquer new territory. In this paper we assess these discursive and material battles over institutional hegemony in Southeast Asian higher education by drawing on the sociology of knowledge approach to discourse. We critically address the competitive negotiation over higher education taking place between international and Southeast Asian educational players, asking whether these contribute more to integration than reinforcing dominant higher education domains. The acquisition of intercultural skills by studies abroad is often considered as desirable. But although we can observe a steady increase of studies abroad in the last two decades, the vast majority of students can, obviously, compete on the labor market also without study abroad experience. This leads to the consideration that it could be increasingly a socially expected and thus normative behavior to study abroad, which develops only in specific social and professional contexts. In this paper, both the conditions and effects of a social norm to study abroad are discussed theoretically and empirically. Data of a cross-sectional survey among students of economics and engineering at a German university are used. The direct mobility experience is the strongest predictor of a social norm to study abroad and this norm, in turn, determines the intention to study abroad most, compared to expected personality development and career success.
