A three-dimensional slowly rotating black hole solution in the presence of negative cosmological constant in the Einstein-power-Maxwell theory is studied. It is shown that in the small rotation limit the electric field, diagonal metric function and thermodynamic properties in the small rotation limit are the same as for static case, whereas the small rotation gives in addition a non-diagonal metric function and magnetic field which are also small. For these functions cased by rotation of black hole it was obtained exact integral solution and analytic asymptotic solution.

We consider black hole solutions with electric and magnetic sources in the four-dimensional Einstein-Born-Infeld-AdS theory with spherical, planar and hyperbolic horizon geometries. Exact analytical solutions for the metric function, electric and magnetic fields were obtained and they recover the RN-AdS black hole in the limit $$\beta \rightarrow +\infty $$ for spherical horizon in the absence of the magnetic charge. Expressions for temperature, electric and magnetic potential were obtained and they satisfy the first law of the extended black hole thermodynamics, where a negative cosmological constant is associated with thermodynamic pressure. Also, the Born-Infeld vacuum polarization term $$Bd\beta $$ was included into the first law in order to satisfy the Smarr relation. Critical behavior of the black hole was examined and condition on electric and magnetic charges were obtained when phase transition appears. Also, the critical ratio and capacity at constant pressure were calculated. Electric and magnetic charges enter into the metric function and thermodynamic quantities symmetrically and thus the presence of the magnetic charge does not bring very significant new features. Finally, we examine the Joule-Thomson expansion if the black hole mass is fixed. The inversion and isenthalpic curves were plotted and the cooling and heating regions were demonstrated. These results recover the Joule-Thomson expansion recently considered for the RN-AdS black hole in the corresponding limit.

Based on Quantum Gravity arguments, it has been suggested that all kinetic terms of light particles below the UV cut-off could arise in the IR via quantum (loop) corrections. These loop corrections involve infinite towers of states becoming light (e.g. Kaluza-Klein or string towers). We study implications of this Emergence Proposal for fundamental scales in the Standard Model (SM). In this scheme all Yukawa couplings are of order one in the UV and small Yukawas for lighter generations appear via large anomalous dimensions induced by the towers of states. Thus, the observed hierarchies of quark and lepton masses are a reflection of the structure of towers of states that lie below the Quantum Gravity scale, $\Lambda_{\text{QG}}$. Small Dirac neutrino masses consistent with experimental observation appear due to the existence of a tower of SM singlet states of mass $m_{0}\simeq Y_{\nu_3}M_p\simeq 7\times 10^5$ GeV, opening up a new extra dimension, while the UV cut-off occurs at $\Lambda_{\text{QG}}\lesssim 10^{14}$ GeV. Additional constraints relating the Electro-Weak (EW) and cosmological constant (c.c.) scales (denoted $M_{\text{EW}}$ and $V_0$) appear if the Swampland condition $m_{\nu_1}\lesssim V_0^{1/4}$ is imposed (with $\nu_1$ denoting the lightest neutrino), which itself arises upon applying the AdS non-SUSY Conjecture or the AdS/dS Distance Conjecture to the 3d vacua from circle compactifications of the SM. In particular, the EW scale and that of the extra dimension fulfill ${m_0 \, M_{\text{EW}}\lesssim 10^{2}\, V_0^{1/4}M_p}$, thus relating the EW hierarchy problem to that of the c.c. Hence, all fundamental scales may be written as powers of the c.c., i.e. $m_{\bullet}\sim V_0^\delta M_p^{1-4\delta}$. International audience; The DBI-Galileon model is a tensor-scalar theory of gravity which finds its foundation as the most general theory of the dynamics of a 4D brane embedded in a 5D bulk. It is of particular interest as it provides a few free parameters with a physical meaning, such as the cosmological constant which is there related to the brane tension. Most studies of this model have been performed assuming a maximally symmetric geometry for the 5D bulk, in which it has been shown that the theory reduces to various types of Galileon. In contrast, the general case for the geometry of the bulk provides a different covariantization of the Galileon model than the covariant Galileon: the DBI-Galileon. From the tight constraints on the gravitational waves speed, we are naturally led to consider the non-relativistic limit of the model where the kinetic energy of the brane is small compared to its tension, that we study in the context of late-time cosmology. The DBI-Galileon in the non-relativistic limit is simply an expansion around General Relativity (GR) which can be expressed as a shift-symmetric Horndeski theory. We developed the description of this theory at the background and perturbation level. However, by studying the scalar and tensor perturbations around a flat FLRW background, we found that they contain a ghost degree of freedom leading to fatal instability of the vacuum for every combination of the free parameters. As a lesson, we emphasized which of the Horndeski terms competes to avoid this instability in more general cases.

We review a cosmological model where the metric determinant plays a dynamical role and present new numerical results on the cancellation of the vacuum energy density including the contribution of a cosmological constant. The action of this model is only invariant under restricted coordinate transformations with unit Jacobian (the same restriction appears in the well-known unimodular-gravity approach to the cosmological constant problem). As to the possible origin of the nonstandard terms in the matter action of the model, we show that these terms can, in principle, arise from the emergent gravity in the IIB matrix model, a nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory., Comment: 27 pages, 2 figures, v4: published version

Gaugino condensation on D-branes wrapping internal cycles gives a mechanism to stabilize the associated moduli. According to the effective field theory, this gives rise, when combined with fluxes, to supersymmetric AdS$_4$ solutions. In this paper we provide a ten-dimensional description of these vacua. We first find the supersymmetry equations for type II AdS$_4$ vacua with gaugino condensates on D-branes, in the framework of generalized complex geometry. We then solve them for type IIB compactifications with gaugino condensates on smeared D7-branes. We show that supersymmetry requires a (conformal) Calabi-Yau manifold and imaginary self-dual three-form fluxes with an additional (0,3) component. The latter is proportional to the cosmological constant, whose magnitude is determined by the expectation value of the gaugino condensate and the stabilized volume of the cycle wrapped by the branes. This confirms, qualitatively and quantitatively, the results obtained using effective field theory. We find that exponential separation between the AdS and the KK scales seems possible as long as the three-form fluxes are such that their (0,3) component is exponentially suppressed. As for the localized solution, it requires going beyond SU(3)-structure internal manifolds. Nevertheless, we show that the action can be evaluated on-shell without relying on the details of such complicated configuration. We find that no "perfect square" structure occurs, and the result is divergent. We describe a new phenomenon in quantum cosmology: self-organised localisation. When the fundamental parameters of a theory are functions of a scalar field subject to large fluctuations during inflation, quantum phase transitions can act as dynamical attractors. As a result, the theory parameters are probabilistically localised around the critical value and the Universe finds itself at the edge of a phase transition. We illustrate how self-organised localisation could account for the observed near-criticality of the Higgs self-coupling, the naturalness of the Higgs mass, or the smallness of the cosmological constant., 104 pages, 12 figures. v3: Measure problem discussion extended and references added. We study black-hole thermodynamics in theories that contain dimensionful constants such as the cosmological constant or coupling constants in Wald's formalism. The most natural way to deal with these constants is to promote them to scalar fields introducing a (d-1)-form Lagrange multiplier that forces them to be constant on-shell. These (d-1)-form potentials provide a dual description of them and, in the context of superstring/supergravity theories, a higher-dimensional origin/explanation. In the context of gauged supergravity theories, all these constants can be collected in the embedding tensor. We show in an explicit 4-dimensional example that the embedding tensor can also be understood as a thermodynamical variable that occurs in the Smarr formula in a duality-invariant fashion. The standard formulation of General Relativity Theory, in the absence of a cosmological constant, is unable to explain the responsible mechanism for the observed late-time cosmic acceleration. On the other hand, by inserting the cosmological constant in Einstein's field equations it is possible to describe the cosmic acceleration, but the cosmological constant suffers from an unprecedented fine-tunning problem. This motivates one to modify Einstein's space-time geometry of General Relativity. The $f(Q)$ modified theory of gravity is an alternative theory to General Relativity, where the non-metricity scalar $Q$ is the responsible candidate for gravitational interactions. In the present work we consider a Friedmann-Lem\^aitre-Robertson-Walker cosmological model dominated by bulk viscous cosmic fluid in $f(Q)$ gravity with the functional form $f(Q)=\alpha Q^n$, where $\alpha$ and $n$ are free parameters of the model. We constrain our model with the recent Pantheon supernovae data set of 1048 data points, Hubble data set of 31 data points and baryon acoustic oscillations data set consisting of six points. For higher values of redshift, it is clear that the $f(Q)$ cosmology better fits data than standard cosmology. We present the evolution of our deceleration parameter with redshift and it properly predicts a transition from decelerated to accelerated phases of the universe expansion. Also, we present the evolution of density, bulk viscous pressure and the effective equation of state parameter with redshift. Those show that bulk viscosity in a cosmic fluid is a valid candidate to acquire the negative pressure to drive the cosmic expansion efficiently.We also examine the behavior of different energy conditions to test the viability of our cosmological $f(Q)$ model. Anti-D3 branes at the bottom of warped throats, commonly used to uplift the cosmological constant in String-Theory de Sitter proposals, source a plaethora of supersymmetry-breaking fluxes, that can interact nontrivially with other ingredients of the flux compactification. In this paper we perform a complex-structure decomposition of these fluxes, and compute the effect of the (0,3) flux component on the stabilization of K\"ahler moduli via D7-branes gaugino condensation. This allows us to obtain a new constraint on the validity of this stabilization mechanism. This effect does not appear hard to satisfy in de Sitter construction proposals that use long warped throats, but may be problematic in proposals where the warping is small., Comment: 17 pages, LaTeX

Barrow proposed that the area law of the entropy associated with a horizon might receive a “fractal correction” due to quantum gravitational effects—in place of S∝A, we have instead S∝A1+δ/2, where 0⩽δ⩽1 measures the deviation from the standard area law (δ=0). Based on black hole thermodynamics, we argue that the Barrow entropy should run (i.e., energy scale dependent), which is reasonable given that quantum gravitational corrections are expected to be important only in the high-energy regime. When applied to the Friedmann equation, we demonstrate the possibility that such a running Barrow entropy index could give rise to a dynamical effective dark energy, which is asymptotically positive and vanishing, but negative at the Big Bang. Such a sign switching dark energy could help to alleviate the Hubble tension. Other cosmological implications are discussed.

We apply a recently developed 2+1+1 decomposition of spacetime, based on a nonorthogonal double foliation for the study of spherically symmetric, static black hole solutions of Horndeski scalar-tensor theory. Our discussion proceeds in an effective field theory (EFT) of modified gravity approach, with the action depending on metric and embedding scalars adapted to the nonorthogonal 2+1+1 decomposition. We prove that the most generic class of Horndeski Lagrangians compatible with observations can be expressed in this EFT form. By studying the first order perturbation of the EFT action we derive three equations of motion, which reduce to those derived earlier in an orthogonal 2+1+1 decomposition, and a fourth equation for the metric parameter N related to the nonorthogonality of the foliation. For the Horndeski class of theories with vanishing $G_3$ and $G_5$, but generic functions $G_2(\phi,X)$ (k-essence) and $G_4(\phi)$ (nonminimal coupling to the metric) we prove the unicity theorem that no action beyond Einstein--Hilbert allows for the Schwarzschild solution. Next we integrate the EFT field equations for the case with only one independent metric function obtaining new solutions characterized by a parameter interpreted as either mass or tidal charge, the cosmological constant and a third parameter. These solutions represent naked singularities, black holes with scalar hair or have the double horizon structure of the Schwarzschild--de Sitter spacetime. Solutions with homogeneous Kantowski--Sachs type regions also emerge. Finally, one of the solutions obtained for the function $G_4$ linear in the curvature coordinate, in certain parameter range exhibits an intriguing logarithmic singularity lying outside the horizon. Following recent works on corner charges we investigate the boundary structure in the case of the theory of gravity formulated as a constrained BF theory. This allows us not only to introduce the cosmological constant, but also explore the influence of the topological terms present in the action of this theory. Established formulas for charges resemble previously obtained ones, but we show that they are affected by the presence of the cosmological constant and topological terms. In the framework of the Einstein-Dirac-axion-aether theory we consider the quartet of self-interacting cosmic fields, which includes the dynamic aether, presented by the unit timelike vector field, the axionic dark mater, described by the pseudoscalar field, the spinor field associated with fermion particles, and the gravity field. The key, associated with the mechanism of self-interaction, is installed into the modified periodic potential of the pseudoscalar (axion) field constructed on the base of a guiding function, which depends on one invariant, one pseudo-invariant and two cross-invariants containing the spinor and vector fields. The total system of the field equations related to the isotropic homogeneous cosmological model is solved; we have found the exact solutions for the guiding function for three cases: nonzero, vanishing and critical values of the cosmological constant. Based on these solutions, we obtained the expressions for the effective mass of spinor particles, interacting with the axionic dark matter and dynamic aether. In unimodular gravity the cosmological constant is a property of states that are specified at the boundaries whereas in general relativity the cosmological constant is a parameter of the action. Unimodular gravity with a nondynamical background spacetime volume element has a time variable that is canonically conjugate to the cosmological constant. Wave functions depend on time and satisfy a Schrödinger equation. On the contrary, in the covariant version of unimodular gravity with a 3-form gauge field, proposed by Henneaux and Teitelboim, wave functions are time independent and satisfy a Wheeler-DeWitt equation, as in general relativity. The 3-form gauge field integrated over spacelike hypersurfaces becomes a “cosmic time” only in the semiclassical approximation. We use Pantheon Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) apparent magnitude, DES-3yr binned SN Ia apparent magnitude, Hubble parameter, and baryon acoustic oscillation measurements to constrain six spatially flat and non-flat cosmological models. These sets of data provide mutually consistent cosmological constraints in the six cosmological models we study. A joint analysis of these data sets provides model-independent estimates of the Hubble constant, $H_0=68.8\pm1.8\ \rm{km \ s^{-1} \ Mpc^{-1}}$, and the non-relativistic matter density parameter, $\Omega_{\rm m_0}=0.294\pm0.020$. Although the joint constraints prefer mild dark energy dynamics and a little spatial curvature, they do not rule out dark energy being a cosmological constant and flat spatial hypersurfaces. We classify all supersymmetric solutions of minimal D=4 gauged supergravity with (2,2) signature and a positive cosmological constant which admit exactly one Killing spinor. This classification produces a geometric structure which is more general than that found for previous classifications of N=2 supersymmetric solutions of this theory. We use the replica method to compute the entanglement entropy of a universe without gravity entangled in a thermofield-double-like state with a disjoint gravitating universe. Including wormholes between replicas of the latter gives an entropy functional which includes an "island" on the gravitating universe. We solve the back-reaction equations when the cosmological constant is negative to show that this island coincides with a causal shadow region that is created by the entanglement in the gravitating geometry. At high entanglement temperatures, the island contribution to the entropy functional leads to a bound on entanglement entropy, analogous to the Page behavior of evaporating black holes. We demonstrate that the entanglement wedge of the non-gravitating universe grows with the entanglement temperature until, eventually, the gravitating universe can be entirely reconstructed from the non-gravitating one., 30 pages, 7 figures, references added, improved discussion

We combine 23 Hubble constant measurements based on Cepheids-SN Ia, TRGB-SN Ia, Miras-SN Ia, Masers, Tully Fisher, Surface Brightness Fluctuations, SN II, Time-delay Lensing, Standard Sirens and $\gamma$-ray Attenuation, obtaining our best {\it optimistic} $H_0$ estimate, that is $H_0=72.94\pm0.75$ km/s/Mpc at 68\% CL. This is in $5.9\sigma$ tension with the $\Lambda$CDM model, therefore we evaluate its impact on the extended Dark Energy cosmological models that can alleviate the tension. We find more than $4.9\sigma$ evidence for a phantom Dark Energy equation of state in the $w$CDM scenario, the cosmological constant ruled out at more than $3\sigma$ in a $w_0w_a$CDM model and more than $5.7\sigma$ evidence for a coupling between Dark Matter and Dark Energy in the IDE scenario. Finally, we check the robustness of our results, and we quote two additional combinations of the Hubble constant. We have studied scattering of a probe particle by a four dimensional AdS-Schwarzschild black hole at large impact factor. Our analysis is consistent perturbatively to leading order in the AdS radius and black hole mass parameter. Next we define a proper "soft limit" of the radiation and extract out the "soft factor" from it. In previous work, black hole vortex solutions in Einstein gravity with AdS$_3$ background were found where the scalar matter profile had a singularity at the origin $r=0$. In this paper, we find numerically static vortex solutions where the scalar and gauge fields have a non-singular profile under Einstein gravity in an AdS$_3$ background. Vortices with different winding numbers $n$, VEV $v$ and cosmological constant $\Lambda$ are obtained. These vortices have positive mass and are not BTZ black holes as they have no event horizon. The mass is determined in two ways: by subtracting the numerical values of two separate asymptotic metrics and via an integral that is purely over the matter fields. The mass of the vortex increases as the cosmological constant becomes more negative and this coincides with the core of the vortex becoming smaller (compressed). We then consider the vortex with gravity in asymptotically flat spacetime for different values of the coupling $\alpha=1/(16 \pi G)$. At the origin, the spacetime has its highest curvature and there is no singularity. It transitions to an asymptotic conical spacetime with angular deficit that increases significantly as $\alpha$ decreases. For comparison, we also consider the vortex without gravity in flat spacetime. For this case, one cannot obtain the mass by the first method (subtracting two metrics) but remarkably, via a limiting procedure, one can obtain an integral mass formula. In the absence of gauge fields, there is a well-known logarithmic divergence in the energy of the vortex. With gravity, we present this divergence in a new light. We show that the metric acquires a logarithmic term which is the $2+1$ dimensional realization of the Newtonian gravitational potential when General Relativity is supplemented with a scalar field. We study some aspects of the de Sitter version of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity. Though we do not have propagating gravitons, we have a boundary mode when we compute observables with a fixed dilaton and metric at the boundary. We compute the no-boundary wavefunctions and probability measures to all orders in perturbation theory. We also discuss contributions from different topologies, borrowing recent results by Saad, Shenker and Stanford. We discuss how the boundary mode leads to gravitational corrections to cosmological observables when we add matter. Finally, starting from a four dimensional gravity theory with a positive cosmological constant, we consider a nearly extremal black hole and argue that some observables are dominated by the two dimensional nearly de Sitter gravity dynamics., Comment: 66 pp, 15 figs; v2: ref added

We study quadratic gravity $R^2+R_{[\mu\nu]}^2$ in the Palatini formalism where the connection and the metric are independent. This action has a {\it gauged} scale symmetry (also known as Weyl gauge symmetry) of Weyl gauge field $v_\mu= (\tilde\Gamma_\mu-\Gamma_\mu)/2$, with $\tilde\Gamma_\mu$ ($\Gamma_\mu$) the trace of the Palatini (Levi-Civita) connection, respectively. The underlying geometry is non-metric due to the $R_{[\mu\nu]}^2$ term acting as a gauge kinetic term for $v_\mu$. We show that this theory has an elegant spontaneous breaking of gauged scale symmetry and mass generation in the absence of matter, where the necessary scalar field ($\phi$) is not added ad-hoc to this purpose but is "extracted" from the $R^2$ term. The gauge field becomes massive by absorbing the derivative term $\partial_\mu\ln\phi$ of the Stueckelberg field ("dilaton"). In the broken phase one finds the Einstein-Proca action of $v_\mu$ of mass proportional to the Planck scale $M\sim \langle\phi\rangle$, and a positive cosmological constant. Below this scale $v_\mu$ decouples, the connection becomes Levi-Civita and metricity and Einstein gravity are recovered. These results remain valid in the presence of non-minimally coupled scalar field (Higgs-like) with Palatini connection and the potential is computed. In this case the theory gives successful inflation and a specific prediction for the tensor-to-scalar ratio $0.007\leq r \leq 0.01$ for current spectral index $n_s$ (at $95\%$CL) and N=60 efolds. This value of $r$ is mildly larger than in inflation in Weyl quadratic gravity of similar symmetry, due to different non-metricity. In this paper, we present novel non-relativistic superalgebras which correspond to supersymmetric extensions of the enlarged extended Bargmann algebra. The three-dimensional non-relativistic Chern-Simons supergravity actions invariant under the aforementioned superalgebras are constructed. The new non-relativistic superalgebras allow to accommodate a cosmological constant in a non-relativistic supergravity theory. Interestingly, we show that one of the non-relativistic supergravity theories presented here leads to the recently introduced Maxwellian exotic Bargmann supergravity when the flat limit $\ell \rightarrow\infty$ is considered. Besides, we show that both descriptions can be written in terms of a supersymmetric extension of the Nappi-Witten algebra or the extended Newton-Hooke superalgebra., Comment: 34 pages

We present a cosmological solution to the electroweak hierarchy problem. After discussing general features of cosmological approaches to naturalness, we extend the Standard Model with two light scalars very weakly coupled to the Higgs and present the mechanism, which we recently introduced in a companion paper to explain jointly the electroweak hierarchy and the strong-CP problem. In this work we show that this solution can be decoupled from the strong-CP problem and discuss its possible implementations and phenomenology. The mechanism works with any standard inflationary sector, it does not require weak-scale inflation or a large number of e-folds, and does not introduce ambiguities related to eternal inflation. The cutoff of the theory can be as large as the Planck scale, both for the Cosmological Constant and for the Higgs sector. Reproducing the observed dark matter relic density fixes the couplings of the two new scalars to the Standard Model, offering a target to future axion or fifth force searches. Depending on the specific interaction of the scalars with the Standard Model, the mechanism either yields rich phenomenology at colliders or provides a novel joint solution to the strong-CP problem. In this paper, we consider the correspondence between the tachyon dark energy model and the Tsallis holographic dark energy scenario in an FRW universe. We demonstrate the Tsallis holographic description of tachyon dark energy in an FRW universe and reconstruct the potential and basic results of the dynamics of the scalar field which describe the tachyon cosmology. In a flat universe, in the tachyon model of Tsallis holographic dark energy, independent of the existence of interaction between dark energy and matter or not, $$\dot{T}^2$$ must always be zero. Therefore, the equation of state $$\omega _D$$ is always $$-1$$ in such a flat universe. For a non-flat universe, $$\dot{T}^2$$ cannot be zero so that $$\omega _D \ne -1$$ which cannot be used to explain the origin of the cosmological constant. $$\dot{T}^2$$ monotonically decreases with the increase in $$\cos (R_\mathrm{h}/a)$$ and $$\cosh (R_\mathrm{h}/a)$$ for different $$\delta $$ s. In particular, for an open universe, $$\dot{T}^2$$ is always larger than zero, while for a closed universe, $$\dot{T}^2$$ is always smaller than zero which is physically invalid. In addition, we conclude that with the increase in $$\cos (R_\mathrm{h}/a)$$ and $$\cosh (R_\mathrm{h}/a)$$ , $$\dot{T}^2$$ always decreases monotonically irrespective of the value of $$b^2$$ .

We introduce the framework of Hopf algebra field theory (HAFT) which generalizes the notion of group field theory to the quantum group (Hopf algebra) case. We focus in particular on the 3d case and show how the HAFT we considered is topological. The highlight of the construction is the notion of plane-wave which leads, in the specific example of SUq (2) with q real, to a discretization of the Euclidian BF action with a negative cosmological constant. The quest of deciphering the true nature of dark energy has proven to be one of the most exciting in recent times in cosmology. Various ideas have been put forward in this regard besides the usual cosmological constant approach, ranging from scalar field based models like Quintessence and Phantom dark energy to various modified gravity approaches as well. A very interesting idea then is to consider scalar field dark energy models in quantum gravitationally corrected cosmologies with the RS-II Braneworld being one of the most well known in this regard. So in this work, we consider RS-II Braneworld based scalar field dark energy models and try to look out for the existence of finite time singularities in these regimes both through a dynamical system perspective, for which we employ the Goriely-Hyde singularity analysis method, and a physical perspective. Our approach is general in the sense that it is not limited to any particular class of potentials or for any constrained parameter region for the brane tension and is valid for both Quintessence and phantom dark energy regimes. We firstly show through Goriely-Hyde procedure that finite time singularities can exist in these models for a limited set of initial conditions and that this result would hold irrespective of any consideration given to the swampland dS conjecture. We then discuss the physical nature of the singularities that can occur in this regime, where we use a well motivated ansatz for the Hubble parameter and show that these models of dark energy can allow for weak singularities like those of Type III and Type IV and can also allow for strong singularities like the Big Rip (Type I)., Comment: v2, 17 pages with no figures, matches the published version in EPJC

In Einstein's Field Equation(EFE) the geometry of the space-time is connected with the matter distribution. The geometry or the gravitational sector deals with classical macroscopic objects involving gravitational units while the matter sector can be better described by quantum theory involving atomic units. It has been argued by Bisabr that there exists an epoch-dependent conversion factor between these two unit systems present in two different conformal frames,i.e. the conformal factor is epoch dependent. We present a detailed analysis of gravity in a partial Bondi gauge, where only the three conditions $g_{rr}=0=g_{rA}$ are fixed. We relax in particular the so-called determinant condition on the transverse metric, which is only assumed to admit a polyhomogeneous radial expansion. This is sufficient in order to build the solution space, which here includes a cosmological constant, time-dependent sources in the boundary metric, logarithmic branches, and an extra trace mode at subleading order in the transverse metric. The evolution equations are studied using the Newman-Penrose formalism in terms of covariant functionals identified from the Weyl scalars, and we build the explicit dictionary between this formalism and the tensorial Einstein equations. This provides in particular a new derivation of the (A)dS mass loss formula. We then study the holographic renormalisation of the symplectic potential, and the transformation laws under residual asymptotic symmetries. The advantage of the partial Bondi gauge is that it allows to contrast and treat in a unified manner the Bondi-Sachs and Newman-Unti gauges, which can each be reached upon imposing a further specific gauge condition. The differential determinant condition leads to the $\Lambda$-BMSW gauge, while a differential condition on $g_{ur}$ leads to a generalized Newman-Unti gauge. This latter gives access to a new asymptotic symmetry which acts on the asymptotic shear and further extends the $\Lambda$-BMSW group by an extra abelian radial translation. This article is dedicated to establishing a novel approach to the cosmological constant, in which it is treated as an eigenvalue of a certain Sturm&ndash, Liouville problem. The key to this approach lies in the proper formulation of physically relevant boundary conditions. Our suggestion in this regard is to utilize the &ldquo, holographic boundary condition&rdquo, under which the cosmological horizon can only bear a natural (i.e., non-fractional) number of bits of information. Under this framework, we study the general d-dimensional problem and derive the general formula for the discrete spectrum of a positive energy density of vacuum. For the particular case of two dimensions, the resultant problem can be analytically solved in the degenerate hypergeometric functions, so it is possible to define explicitly a self-action potential, which determines the fields of matter in the model. We conclude the article by taking a look at the d-dimensional model of a fractal horizon, where the Bekenstein&rsquo, s formula for the entropy gets replaced by the Barrow entropy. This gives us a chance to discuss a recently realized problem of possible existence of naked singularities in the D&ne, 3 models.

We show that vanishing of the sigma-model beta-functions for the metric $g_{\mu\nu}$, antisymmetric tensor $B_{\mu\nu}$ and dilaton $\Phi$ of any string-theory model in $D$ dimensions at tree level can be obtained from a universal effective action, provided that the field combination $\sqrt{-g}e^{-2\Phi}$ is non-dynamical. The central-charge deficit term is omitted from the action and appears as an integration constant at the level of the field equations. The analysis is done at leading order in $\alpha'$, i.e. at the two-derivative level in the effective description. It can be extended to incorporate higher order string-loop corrections, Ramond-Ramond forms and moduli fields. In all cases, the non-dynamical field combination turns out to be $\sqrt{-g}\, U$, where $U$ is the effective potential. When certain fluxes are fixed and the moduli fields are stabilized, no cosmological term will arise in the action. We study the effects of gravitationally-driven decoherence on tunneling processes associated with false vacuum decays, such as the Coleman--De~Luccia instanton. We compute the thermal graviton-induced decoherence rate for a wave function describing a perfect fluid of nonzero energy density in a finite region. When the effective cosmological constant is positive, the thermal graviton background sourced by a de Sitter horizon provides an unavoidable decoherence effect, which may have important consequences for tunneling processes in cosmological history. In this work we study ten-dimensional solutions to type IIA string theory of the form AdS$_4$ x $X_6$ which contain orientifold planes and preserve N=1 supersymmetry. In particular, we consider solutions which exhibit some key features of the four-dimensional DGKT proposal for compactifications on Calabi-Yau manifolds with fluxes, and in this sense may be considered their ten-dimensional uplifts. We focus on the supersymmetry equations and Bianchi identities, and find solutions to these that are valid at the two-derivative level and at first order in an expansion parameter which is related to the AdS cosmological constant. This family of solutions is such that the background metric is deformed from the Ricci-flat one to one exhibiting SU(3)xSU(3)-structure, and dilaton gradients and warp factors are induced., 29 pages, minor corrections

We use HII starburst galaxy apparent magnitude measurements to constrain cosmological parameters in six cosmological models. A joint analysis of HII galaxy, quasar angular size, baryon acoustic oscillations peak length scale, and Hubble parameter measurements result in relatively model-independent and restrictive estimates of the current values of the non-relativistic matter density parameter $\Omega_{\rm m_0}$ and the Hubble constant $H_0$. These estimates favor a 2.0$\sigma$ to 3.4$\sigma$ (depending on cosmological model) lower $H_0$ than what is measured from the local expansion rate. The combined data are consistent with dark energy being a cosmological constant and with flat spatial hypersurfaces, but do not strongly rule out mild dark energy dynamics or slightly non-flat spatial geometries., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, MNRAS, in press. In this paper, we study the thermodynamic features of a rotating black hole surrounded by perfect fluid dark matter. We analyze the critical behavior of the black hole by considering the known relationship between pressure and cosmological constant. We show that the black hole admits a first order phase transition and, both rotation and perfect fluid dark matter parameters have a significant impact on the critical quantities. We also introduce a new ad hoc pressure related to the perfect fluid dark matter and find a first order van der Waals like phase transition. In addition, using the sixth order WKB method, we investigate the massless scalar quasinormal modes (QNMs) for the static spherically symmetric black hole surrounded by dark matter. We consider the most general effective action for the four-form fluxes in the Standard Model coupled to gravity. The Higgs mass parameter can be relaxed to a correct value due to the four-form coupling to the Higgs field and it stops changing due to an extremely suppressed transition probability from the observed cosmological constant to AdS space. A three-step procedure is proposed in type IIA string theory to stabilize multiple moduli in a dS vacuum. The first step is to construct a progenitor model with a localized stable supersymmetric Minkowski vacuum, or a discrete set of such vacua. It can be done, for example, using two non-perturbative exponents in the superpotential for each modulus, as in the KL model. A large set of supersymmetric Minkowski vacua with strongly stabilized moduli is protected by a theorem on stability of these vacua in absence of flat directions. The second step involves a parametrically small downshift to a supersymmetric AdS vacuum, which can be achieved by a small change of the superpotential. The third step is an uplift to a dS vacuum with a positive cosmological constant using the $\overline {D6}$-brane contribution. Stability of the resulting dS vacuum is inherited from the stability of the original supersymmetric Minkowski vacuum if the supersymmetry breaking in dS vacuum is parametrically small., Comment: 30 pages, 3 figs. An ultralocal form of any classical field theory eliminates all spatial derivatives in its action functional, e.g., in its Hamiltonian functional density. It has been applied to covariant scalar field theories and even to Einstein's general relativity, by Pilati, as an initial term in a perturbation series that aimed to restore all omitted derivatives. Previously, the author has quantized ultralocal scalar fields by affine quantization to show that these non-renormalizanle theories can be correctly quantized by affine quantization; the story of such scalar models is discussed in this paper. The present paper will also show that ultralocal gravity can be successfully quantized by affine quantization. The purpose of this study is that a successful affine quantization of any ultralocal field problem implies that, with properly restored derivatives, the classical theory can, in principle, be guaranteed a successful result using either a canonical quantization or an affine quantization. We present a theory with axion flux monodromies coupled to gravity, that reduces to the local vacuum energy sequester below the axion mass scales. If the axion potentials include a term generated by nonperturbative couplings to gauge sectors, with a decay constant incommensurate with monodromy periods, the low energy potential germinates a landscape of irrational axion vacua, with arbitrarily small cosmological constants. The sensitivity of the values of cosmological constants to unknown UV physics can be greatly reduced. The variation of the cosmological constant in each vacuum, from one order in perturbation theory to the next, can be much smaller than the na\"ive cutoff. The nonperturbative transitions in the early universe between the vacua populate this landscape, similar to the case of irrational axion. In this paper I continue the investigation in \cite{1,1b} concerning my proposal on the nature of the cosmological constant. In particular, I study both mathematically and physically the quantum Planckian context and I provide, in order to depict quantum fluctuations and in absence of a complete quantum gravity theory, a semiclassical solution where an effective inhomogeneous metric at Planckian scales or above is averaged. In such a framework, a generalization of the well known Buchert formalism \cite{2} is obtained with the foliation in terms of the mean value $s(\hat{t})$ of the time operator $\hat{t}$ in a maximally localizing state $\{s\}$ of a quantum spacetime \cite{3,4,5,6} and in a cosmological context \cite{7}. As a result, after introducing a decoherence length scale $L_D$ where quantum fluctuations are averaged on, a classical de Sitter universe emerges with a small cosmological constant depending on $L_D$ and frozen in a true vacuum state (lowest energy), provided that the kinematical backreaction is negligible at that scale $L_D$. Finally, I analyse the case with a non-vanishing initial spatial curvature $\mathcal{R}$ showing that, for a reasonable large class of models, spatial curvature and kinematical backreation $\mathcal{Q}$ are suppressed by the dynamical evolution of the spacetime., Accepted for publicationa in Foundations of Physics

We present a two-field model that realises inflation and the observed density of dark energy today, whilst solving the fine-tuning problems inherent in quintessence models. One field acts as the inflaton, generically driving the other to a saddle-point of the potential, from which it acts as a quintessence field following electroweak symmetry breaking. The model exhibits essentially no sensitivity to the initial value of the quintessence field, naturally suppresses its interactions with other fields, and automatically endows it with a small effective mass in the late Universe. The magnitude of dark energy today is fixed by the height of the saddle point in the potential, which is dictated entirely by the scale of electroweak symmetry breaking., v2: 13 pages, minor improvements, version accepted in JHEP

We propose a mechanism to solve the Higgs naturalness problem through a cosmological selection process. The discharging of excited field configurations through membrane nucleation leads to discrete jumps of the cosmological constant and the Higgs mass, which vary in a correlated way. The resulting multitude of universes are all empty, except for those in which the cosmological constant and the Higgs mass are both nearly vanishing. String theory has no parameter except the string scale, so a dynamically compactified solution to 4 dimensional spacetime should determine both the Planck scale and the cosmological constant $\Lambda$. In the racetrack K\"ahler uplift flux compactification model in Type IIB theory, where the string theory landscape is generated by scanning over discrete values of all the flux parameters, a statistical preference for an exponentially small $\Lambda$ is found to be natural (arXiv:1305.0753). Within this framework and matching the median $\Lambda$ value to the observed $\Lambda$, a mass scale ${\bf m}\simeq 100$ GeV naturally appears. We show that the Schwarzschild-(A)dS black hole mechanics possesses a hidden symmetry under the three-dimensional Poincar\'e group. This symmetry shows up after having gauge-fixed the diffeomorphism invariance in the symmetry-reduced homogeneous Einstein-$\Lambda$ model and stands as a physical symmetry of the system. It dictates the geometry both in the black hole interior and exterior regions, as well as beyond the cosmological horizon in the Schwarzschild-dS case. It follows that one can associate a set of non-trivial conserved charges to the Schwarzschild-(A)dS black hole which act in each causally disconnected regions. In T-regions, they act on fields living on spacelike hypersurface of constant time, while in the R-region, they act on time-like hypersurface of constant radius. We find that while the expression of the charges depend explicitly on the location of the hypersurface, the charge algebra remains the same at any radius in R-regions (or time in T-regions). Finally, the analysis of the Casimirs of the charge algebra reveals a new solution-generating map. The sl$(2,\mathbb{R})$ Casimir is shown to generate a one-parameter family of deformation of the black hole geometry labelled by the cosmological constant. This gives rise to a new conformal bridge allowing one to continuously deform the Schwarzschild-AdS geometry to the Schwarzschild and the Schwarzschild-dS solutions., Comment: 22+7 pages, typos corrected, version published in JHEP

We review the geometric superspace approach to the boundary problem in supergravity, retracing the geometric construction of four-dimensional supergravity Lagrangians in the presence of a non-trivial boundary of spacetime. We first focus on pure $\mathcal{N}=1$ and $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories with negative cosmological constant. Here, the supersymmetry invariance of the action requires the addition of topological (boundary) contributions which generalize at the supersymmetric level the Euler-Gauss-Bonnet term. Moreover, one finds that the boundary values of the super field-strengths are dynamically fixed to constant values, corresponding to the vanishing of the $\mathrm{OSp}(\mathcal{N}|4)$-covariant supercurvatures at the boundary. We then consider the case of vanishing cosmological constant where, in the presence of a non-trivial boundary, the inclusion of boundary terms involving additional fields, which behave as auxiliary fields for the bulk theory, allows to restore supersymmetry. In all the cases listed above, the full, supersymmetric Lagrangian can be recast in a MacDowell-Mansouri(-like) form. We present an improved formulation of 4-dimensional Lorentzian spinfoam quantum gravity with cosmological constant. The construction of spinfoam amplitudes uses the state-integral model of PSL(2,$\mathbb{C}$) Chern-Simons theory and the implementation of simplicity constraint. The formulation has 2 key features: (1) spinfoam amplitudes are all finite, and (2) With suitable boundary data, the semiclassical asymptotics of the vertex amplitude has two oscillatory terms, with phase plus or minus the 4-dimensional Lorentzian Regge action with cosmological constant for the constant curvature 4-simplex., 25 pages, 8 figures

We construct an axially symmetric solution of Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity coupled to an electromagnetic field in 2+1 dimensions including a (negative) cosmological constant term. This is achieved by using a recently developed mapping procedure that allows to generate solutions in certain families of metric-affine gravity theories starting from a known seed solution of General Relativity, which in the present case corresponds to the electrically charged Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) solution. We discuss the main features of the new configurations, including the modifications to the ergospheres and horizons, the emergence of wormhole structures, and the consequences for the regularity (or not) of these space-times via geodesic completeness., 11 pages, 3 figures

We study the Page curve and the island rule for black holes evaporating into gravitating baths, with an eye towards establishing a connection with the ER=EPR proposal. We consider several models of two entangled 2d black holes in Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity with negative cosmological constant. The first, "doubled PSSY," model is one in which the black holes have end-of-the-world (ETW) branes with a flavour degree of freedom. We study highly entangled states of this flavour degree of freedom and find an entanglement-induced Hawking-Page-like transition from a geometry with two disconnected black holes to one with a pair of black holes connected by a wormhole, thus realising the ER = EPR proposal. The second model is a dynamical one in which the ETW branes do not have internal degrees of freedom but the JT gravity is coupled to a 2d CFT, and we entangle the black holes by coupling the two CFTs at the $AdS$ boundary and evolving for a long time. We study the entanglement entropy between the two black holes and find that the story is substantially similar to that with a non-gravitating thermal bath. In the third model, we couple the two ends of a two-sided eternal black hole and evolve for a long time. Finally, we discuss the possibility of a Hawking-Page-like transition induced by real-time evolution that realises the ER = EPR proposal in this dynamical setting., 47+14 pages, 16 figures. In this work, we present the three-dimensional Maxwell Carroll gravity by considering the ultra-relativistic limit of the Maxwell Chern-Simons gravity theory defined in three spacetime dimensions. We show that an extension of the Maxwellian Carroll symmetry is necessary in order for the invariant tensor of the ultra-relativistic Maxwellian algebra to be non-degenerate. Consequently, we discuss the origin of the aforementioned algebra and theory as a flat limit. We show that the theoretical setup with cosmological constant yielding the extended Maxwellian Carroll Chern-Simons gravity in the vanishing cosmological constant limit is based on an enlarged extended version of the Carroll symmetry. Indeed, the latter exhibits a non-degenerate invariant tensor allowing the proper construction of a Chern-Simons gravity theory which reproduces the extended Maxwellian Carroll gravity in the flat limit., 18 pages
