Abstract

BPS black hole degeneracies can be expressed in terms of an inverse Laplace transform of a partition function based on a mixed electric/magnetic ensemble, which involves a non-trivial integration measure. This measure has been evaluated for black holes with various degrees of supersymmetry and for N=4 supersymmetric black holes all results agree. It generally receives contributions from non-holomorphic corrections. An explicit evaluation of these corrections in the context of the effective action of the FHSV model reveals that these are related to, but quantitatively different from, the non-holomorphic corrections to the topological string, indicating that the relation between the twisted partition functions of the latter and the effective action is more subtle than has so far been envisaged. The effective action result leads to a duality invariant BPS free energy and arguments are presented for the existence of consistent non-holomorphic deformations of special geometry that can account for these effects. A prediction is given for the measure based on semiclassical arguments for a class of N=2 black holes. Furthermore an attempt is made to confront some of the results of this paper to a recent proposal for the microstate degeneracies of the STU model., Comment: 45 pages, minor changes

Abstract

We formulate a novel approach to decoherence based on neglecting observationally inaccessible correlators. We apply our formalism to a renormalised interacting quantum field theoretical model. Using out-of-equilibrium field theory techniques we show that the Gaussian von Neumann entropy for a pure quantum state increases to the interacting thermal entropy. This quantifies decoherence and thus measures how classical our pure state has become. The decoherence rate is equal to the single particle decay rate in our model. We also compare our approach to existing approaches to decoherence in a simple quantum mechanical model. We show that the entropy following from the perturbative master equation suffers from physically unacceptable secular growth.

Abstract

A systematic off-shell reduction scheme from five to four space-time dimensions is presented for supergravity theories with eight supercharges. It is applicable to theories with higher-derivative couplings and it is used to address a number of open questions regarding BPS black holes in five dimensions. Under this reduction the 5D Weyl multiplet becomes reducible and decomposes into the 4D Weyl multiplet and an extra Kaluza-Klein vector multiplet. The emergence of the pseudoscalar field of the latter multiplet and the emergence of the 4D R-symmetry group are subtle features of the reduction. The reduction scheme enables to determine how a 5D supersymmetric Lagrangian with higher-derivative couplings decomposes upon dimensional reduction into a variety of independent 4D supersymmetric invariants, without the need for imposing field equations. In this way we establish, for example, the existence of a new N=2 supersymmetric invariant that involves the square of the Ricci tensor. Abstract

We calculate the bulk viscosity, drag force and jet quenching parameter in Improved Holographic QCD. We find that the bulk viscosity rises near the phase transition but does not exceed the shear viscosity. The drag force shows the effects of asymptotic freedom both as a function of velocity and temperature. It indicates diffusion times of heavy quarks in rough agreement with data. The jet quenching parameter values computed via the light-like Wilson loop are in the lower range suggested by data., Comment: Latex, 61 pages, 18 eps figures. Abstract

We take the first steps in a systematic study of group field theory (GFT) renormalization, focusing on the Boulatov model for 3D quantum gravity. We define an algorithm for constructing the 2D triangulations that characterize the boundary of the 3D bubbles, where divergences are located, of an arbitrary 3D GFT Feynman diagram. We then identify a special class of graphs for which a complete contraction procedure is possible, and prove, for these, a complete power counting. These results represent important progress towards understanding the origin of the continuum and manifoldlike appearance of quantum spacetime at low energies, and of its topology, in a GFT framework.

Abstract

The asymptotically-logarithmically-AdS black-hole solutions of 5D dilaton gravity with a monotonic dilaton potential are analyzed in detail. Such theories are holographically very close to pure Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions. The existence and uniqueness of black-hole solutions is shown. It is also shown that a Hawking-Page transition exists at finite temperature if and only if the potential corresponds to a confining theory. The physics of the transition matches in detail with that of deconfinement of the Yang-Mills theory. The high-temperature phase asymptotes to a free gluon gas at high temperature matching the expected behavior from asymptotic freedom. The thermal gluon condensate is calculated and shown to be crucial for the existence of a non-trivial deconfining transition. Abstract

The semi-phenomenological improved holographic model for QCD is confronted with data of the pure glue, large-Nc gauge theory. After fitting two phenomenological parameters in the potential, the model can reproduce in detail all thermodynamic functions at finite temperature. It also reproduces in detail all known spin-0 and spin-2 glueball observables at zero temperature and predicts the rest of the 0++ and 2++ towers. A similar two parameter fit in the CP-odd sector postdicts the correct second 0+- glueball mass, and predicts the rest of the 0+- tower., 36 pages, 10 figures; references added, minor typos corrected; v3: corrected numerical mistake in section 5.4.

Abstract

We identify certain blocks in the S-matrix describing the scattering of bound states of the AdS5 x S5 superstring that allow for a representation in terms of universal R-matrices of Yangian doubles. For these cases, we use the formulas for Drinfeld's second realization of the Yangian in arbitrary bound-state representations to obtain the explicit expressions for the corresponding R-matrices. Abstract

Finding the exact, quantum corrected metric on the hypermultiplet moduli space in Type II string compactifications on Calabi-Yau threefolds is an outstanding open problem. We address this issue by relating the quaternionic-Kahler metric on the hypermultiplet moduli space to the complex contact geometry on its twistor space. In this framework, Euclidean D-brane instantons are captured by contact transformations between different patches. We derive those by recasting the previously known A-type D2-instanton corrections in the language of contact geometry, covariantizing the result under electro-magnetic duality, and using mirror symmetry. As a result, we are able to express the effects of all D-instantons in Type II compactifications concisely as a sum of dilogarithm functions. We conclude with some comments on the relation to microscopic degeneracies of four-dimensional BPS black holes and to the wall-crossing formula of Kontsevich and Soibelman, and on the form of the yet unknown NS5-brane instanton contributions., Comment: 47 pages, 1 figure, uses JHEP3.cls

Abstract

We approach the issue of exponentiation of soft gauge boson corrections to scattering amplitudes from a path integral point of view. We show that if one represents the amplitude as a first quantized path integral in a mixed coordinate-momentum space representation, a charged particle interacting with a soft gauge field is represented as a Wilson line for a semi-infinite line segment, together with calculable fluctuations. Combining such line segments, we show that exponentiation in an abelian field theory follows immediately from standard path-integral combinatorics. In the non-abelian case, we consider color singlet hard interactions with two outgoing external lines, and obtain a new viewpoint for exponentiation in terms of ``webs'', with a closed form solution for their corresponding color factors. Abstract

We demonstrate that certain gauge fixing functionals cannot be added to the action on backgrounds such as de Sitter in which a linearization instability is present. We also construct the field dependent gauge transformation which carries the electromagnetic vector potential from a convenient, non-de Sitter invariant gauge to the de Sitter invariant, Lorentz gauge. The transformed propagator agrees with the de Sitter invariant result previously found by solving the propagator equation in Lorentz gauge. This shows that the gauge transformation technique will eliminate unphysical breaking of de Sitter invariance introduced by a gauge condition. It is suggested that the same technique can be used to finally resolve the issue of whether or not free gravitons are de Sitter invariant., Comment: 45 pages

Abstract

We study general linear perturbations of a class of 4d real-dimensional hyperkahler manifolds obtainable by the (generalized) Legendre transform method. Using twistor methods, we show that deformations can be encoded in a set of holomorphic functions of 2d+1 variables, as opposed to the functions of d+1 variables controlling the unperturbed metric. Such deformations generically break all tri-holomorphic isometries of the unperturbed metric. Geometrically, these functions generate the symplectomorphisms which relate local complex Darboux coordinate systems in different patches of the twistor space. The deformed Kahler potential follows from these data by a Penrose-type transform. As an illustration of our general framework, we determine the leading exponential deviation of the Atiyah-Hitchin manifold away from its negative mass Taub-NUT limit. Abstract

A scenario for stabilization of axionic moduli fields in the context of type IIB Calabi-Yau flux compactifications is discussed in detail. We consider the case of a Calabi-Yau orientifold with h^{1,1}_- \neq 0 which allows for the presence of B_2 and C_2-moduli. In an attempt to generalize the KKLT and the Large Volume Scenario, we show that these axions can also be stabilized - some already at tree level, and others when we include perturbative \alpha'-corrections to the Kaehler potential K and nonperturbative D3-instanton contributions to the superpotential W. Abstract

We analyse the effect of velocity and acceleration on the temperature felt by particles and strings in backgrounds relevant in holographic models. First, we compare accelerated strings and strings at finite temperature. We find that for fixed Unruh temperature felt by the string endpoints, the screening length is smaller for the accelerated Wilson loop than for the static one in a thermal background of the same temperature; hence acceleration provides a "more efficient" mechanism for melting of mesons. Secondly, we show that the velocity-dependence of the screening length of the colour force, previously obtained from a moving Wilson loop in a finite temperature background, is not specific for the string, but is a consequence of the generic fact that an observer which moves with constant velocity in a black hole background measures a velocity-dependent temperature. Finally, we analyse accelerated particles and strings in the AdS black hole background, and show that these feel a temperature which increases as a function of time. Abstract

Inspired by previous work in 2+1 dimensional quantum gravity, which found evidence for a discretization of time in the quantum theory, we reexamine the issue for the case of pure Lorentzian gravity with vanishing cosmological constant and spatially compact universes of genus larger than 1. Taking as our starting point the Chern-Simons formulation with Poincare gauge group, we identify a set of length variables corresponding to space- and timelike distances along geodesics in three-dimensional Minkowski space. These are Dirac observables, that is, functions on the reduced phase space, whose quantization is essentially unique. Abstract

We show that the noncritical string field theory developed from two-dimensional quantum gravity in the framework of causal dynamical triangulations can be viewed as arising through a stochastic quantization. This requires that the proper time appearing in the string field theory be identified with the stochastic time of the stochastic formulation. The framework of stochastic quantization gives rise to a natural nonperturbative quantum Hamiltonian, which incorporates a sum over all spacetime topologies. We point out that the external character of stochastic time is a feature that pertains more generally to the proper time or distance appearing in nonperturbative correlation functions in quantum gravity., Comment: 15 pages
