We obtain the non-equilibrium effective action of an inflaton like scalar field --the system-- by tracing over sub Hubble degrees of freedom of "environmental" light scalar fields. The effective action is stochastic leading to effective Langevin equations of motion for the fluctuations of the inflaton-like field, with self-energy corrections and stochastic noise correlators that obey a de Sitter space-time analog of a fluctuation dissipation relation. We solve the Langevin equation implementing a dynamical renormalization group resummation of the leading secular terms and obtain the corrections to the power spectrum of super Hubble fluctuations of the inflaton field, $\mathcal{P}(k;\eta) = \mathcal{P}_0(k)\,e^{-\gamma(k;\eta)}$ where $\mathcal{P}_0(k)$ is the nearly scale invariant power spectrum in absence of coupling. $\gamma(k;\eta)>0$ describes the suppression of the power spectrum, it features Sudakov-type double logarithms and entails violations of scale invariance. We also obtain the effective action for the case of a heavy scalar field of mass $ M \gg H$, this case yields a local "Fermi" limit with a very weak self-interaction of the inflaton-like field and dissipative terms that are suppressed by powers of $H/M$. We study the power spectrum of super-Hubble fluctuations of an inflaton-like scalar field, the "system", coupled to another scalar field, the "environment" during de Sitter inflation. We obtain the reduced density matrix for the inflaton fluctuations by integrating out the environmental degrees of freedom. These are considered to be massless and conformally coupled to gravity as a \emph{proxy} to describe degrees of freedom that remain sub-Hubble all throughout inflation. The time evolution of the density matrix is described by a quantum master equation, which describes the decay of the vacuum state, the production of particles and correlated pairs and quantum entanglement between super and sub-Hubble degrees of freedom. The quantum master equation provides a non-perturbative resummation of secular terms from self-energy (loop) corrections to the inflaton fluctuations. In the case studied here these are Sudakov-type double logarithms which result in the \emph{decay} of the power spectrum of inflaton fluctuations upon horizon crossing with a concomitant violation of scale invariance. The emergence of an effective field theory out of equilibrium is studied in the case in which a light field --the system-- interacts with very heavy fields in a finite temperature bath. We obtain the reduced density matrix for the light field, its time evolution is determined by an effective action that includes the \emph{influence action} from correlations of the heavy degrees of freedom. The non-equilibrium effective field theory yields a Langevin equation of motion for the light field in terms of dissipative and noise kernels that obey a generalized fluctuation dissipation relation. These are completely determined by the spectral density of the bath which is analyzed in detail for several cases. At $T=0$ we elucidate the effect of thresholds in the renormalization aspects and the asymptotic emergence of a local effective field theory with unitary time evolution. At $T\neq 0$ new "anomalous" thresholds arise, in particular the \emph{decay} of the environmental heavy fields into the light field leads to \emph{dissipative} dynamics of the light field. Even when the heavy bath particles are thermally suppressed this dissipative contribution leads to the \emph{thermalization} of the light field which is confirmed by a quantum kinetics analysis. We obtain the quantum master equation and show explicitly that its solution in the field basis is precisely the influence action that determines the effective non-equilibrium field theory. The Lindblad form of the quantum master equation features \emph{time dependent dissipative coefficients}. Their time dependence is crucial to extract renormalization effects at asymptotically long time. Inflation is part of the Standard Model of the Universe supported by CMB and large scale structure LSS datasets. This review presents new developments of inflation in three main chapters. (I): The effective theory of inflation a la Ginsburg-Landau (GL): the inflaton potential is a polynomial with universal form making explicit the inflation energy scale M, the Planck mass and the inflation e-folds number N ~ 60. The slow-roll expansion becomes a systematic 1/N expansion and the inflaton couplings are naturally small as powers of (M/M_{Pl})^2. The spectral index (n_s - 1) and the ratio of tensor/scalar fluctuations r are O(1/N), the running index is O(1/N^2). M ~ 0.7 10^{16} GeV is completely determined by the scalar adiabatic fluctuations amplitude. (II): A Monte Carlo Markov Chains (MCMC) analysis of the CMB+LSS data (including WMAP5) with our analytic theoretical results yields: a lower bound for r (new inflation): r > 0.023 (95%CL), r > 0.046 (68%CL); the preferred inflation potential is a double well, even function of the field yielding as most probable values n_s ~ 0.964, r ~ 0.051. This value for r is within reach of forthcoming CMB observations. Slow-roll inflation is generically preceded by a short fast-roll stage which leads to a suppression of the CMB quadrupoles. MCMC analysis of the WMAP+SDSS data shows that fast-roll fits the TT, TE and EE modes well reproducing the quadrupole suppression and fixes the total number of efolds of inflation to be N_{total} ~ 64. (III) Quantum loop corrections are very small and controlled by powers of (H /M_{Pl})^2 ~ 10^{-9} which validates the effective theory of inflation. The transfer function $T(k)$ of dark matter (DM) perturbations during matter domination is obtained by solving the collisionless Boltzmann-Vlasov equation. We find an \emph{exact} expression for $T(k)$ for \emph{arbitrary} distribution functions of decoupled particles and initial conditions}. We find a remarkably accurate and simple approximation valid on all scales of cosmological relevance for structure formation in the linear regime. The natural scale of suppression is the free streaming wavevector at matter-radiation equality, $ k_{fs}(t_{eq}) = [{4\pi\rho_{0M}}/{[< \vec{V}^2> (1+z_{eq})]} ]^\frac12 $. An important ingredient is a non-local kernel determined by the distribution functions of the decoupled particles which describes the \emph{memory of the initial conditions and gravitational clustering} and yields a correction to the fluid description. Distribution functions that favor the small momentum region lead to an \emph{enhancement of power at small scales} $ k > k_{fs}(t_{eq}) $. For DM thermal relics that decoupled while ultrarelativistic we find $ k_{fs}(t_{eq}) \simeq 0.003 (g_d/2)^\frac13 (m/\mathrm{keV}) [\mathrm{kpc}]^{-1} $, where $ g_d $ is the number of degrees of freedom at decoupling. For WIMPS we obtain $ k_{fs}(t_{eq}) = 5.88 (g_d/2)^\frac13 (m/100 \mathrm{GeV})^\frac12 (T_d/10 \mathrm{MeV})^\frac12 [\mathrm{pc}]^{-1} $. Mass bounds on dark matter (DM) candidates are obtained for particles decoupling in or out of equilibrium with {\bf arbitrary} isotropic and homogeneous distribution functions. A coarse grained Liouville invariant primordial phase space density $ \mathcal D $ is introduced. Combining its value with recent photometric and kinematic data on dwarf spheroidal satellite galaxies in the Milky Way (dShps), the DM density today and $N$-body simulations, yields upper and lower bounds on the mass, primordial phase space densities and velocity dispersion of the DM candidates. The mass of the DM particles is bound in the few keV range. If chemical freeze out occurs before thermal decoupling, light bosonic particles can Bose-condense. Such Bose-Einstein {\it condensate} is studied as a dark matter candidate. Depending on the relation between the critical($T_c$)and decoupling($T_d$)temperatures, a BEC light relic could act as CDM but the decoupling scale must be {\it higher} than the electroweak scale. The condensate tightens the upper bound on the particle's mass. Non-equilibrium scenarios that describe particle production and partial thermalization, sterile neutrinos produced out of equilibrium and other DM models are analyzed in detail obtaining bounds on their mass, primordial phase space density and velocity dispersion. Light thermal relics with $ m \sim \mathrm{few} \mathrm{keV}$ and sterile neutrinos lead to a primordial phase space density compatible with {\bf cored} dShps and disfavor cusped satellites. Light Bose condensed DM candidates yield phase space densities consistent with {\bf cores} and if $ T_c\gg T_d $ also with cusps. Phase space density bounds from N-body simulations suggest a potential tension for WIMPS with $ m \sim 100 \mathrm{GeV},T_d \sim 10 \mathrm{MeV} $., Comment: 27 pages 8 figures. The CMB power spectra are studied for different families of single field new and chaotic inflation models in the effective field theory approach to inflation. We implement a systematic expansion in 1/N_e where N_e ~ 50 is the number of e-folds before the end of inflation. We study the dependence of the observables (n_s, r and dn_s/d\ln k) on the degree of the potential (2 n) and confront them to the WMAP3 and large scale structure data: this shows in general that fourth degree potentials (n=2) provide the best fit to the data; the window of consistency with the WMAP3 and LSS data narrows for growing n. New inflation models yield a good fit to the r and n_s data in a wide range of field and parameter space. Small field inflation yields r<0.16 while large field inflation yields r>0.16 (for N_e=50). All members of the new inflation family predict a small but negative running -4(n+1)10^{-4}< dn_s/d\ln k <-2 10^{-4}. A reconstruction program is carried out suggesting quite generallythat for n_s consistent with the WMAP3 and LSS data and r<0.1 the symmetry breaking scale for new inflation is |\phi_0| ~ 10 M_{Pl} while the field scale at Hubble crossing is |\phi_{50}| ~ M_{Pl}.The family of chaotic models feature r>0.16 (for N_e=50) and only a restricted subset of chaotic models are consistent with the combined WMAP3 bounds on r, n_s,dn_s/d\ln k with a narrow window in field amplitude around |\phi_{50}| ~ 15 M_{Pl}.A measurement of r<0.16 (for N_e =50) will distinctly rule out a large class of chaotic scenarios and will favor new inflationary models. We investigate the issue of initial conditions of curvature and tensor perturba- tions at the beginning of slow roll inflation and their effect on the power spectra. Renormalizability and small back reaction constrain the high k behavior of the Bogoliubov coefficients that define these initial conditions.We introduce a transfer function D(k) which encodes the effect of generic initial conditions on the power spectra. The constraint from renormalizability and small back reaction entails that D(k) < mu^2/k^2 for large k, implying that observable effects from initial conditions are more prominent in the low multipoles. This behavior affects the CMB quadrupole by the observed amount \~10-20% when mu is of the order of the energy scale of inflation. The effects on high l-multipoles are suppressed by a factor ~1/l^2 due to the fall off of D(k) for large wavevectors k. We show that the determination of generic initial conditions for the fluc- tuations is equivalent to the scattering problem by a potential V(eta) localized just prior to the slow roll stage. Such potential leads to a transfer function D(k) which automatically obeys the renormalizability and small backreaction constraints. We find that an attractive potential V(eta) yields a suppression of the lower CMB multipoles.Both for curvature and tensor modes, the quadrupole suppression depends only on the energy scale of V(eta) and on the time interval where V(eta) is nonzero. A suppression of the quadrupole for curvature pertur- bations consistent with the data is obtained when the scale of the potential is of the order of k^2_Q where k_Q is the wavevector whose physical wavelength is the Hubble radius today., Comment: Some comments and references added

Within the effective field theory of inflation, an initialization of the classical dynamics of the inflaton with approximate equipartition between the kinetic and potential energy of the inflaton leads to a brief fast roll stage that precedes the slow roll regime. The fast roll stage leads to an attractive potential in the wave equations for the mode functions of curvature and tensor perturbations. The evolution of the inflationary perturbations is equivalent to the scattering by this potential and a useful dictionary between the scattering data and observables is established.Implementing methods from scattering theory we prove that this attractive potential leads to a suppression of the quadrupole moment for CMB and B-mode angular power spectra. The scale of the potential is determined by the Hubble parameter during slow roll. Within the effective field theory of inflation at the grand unification (GUT) energy scale we find that if inflation lasts a total number of efolds N_{tot} ~ 59, there is a 10-20% suppression of the CMB quadrupole and about 2-4% suppression of the tensor quadrupole. The suppression of higher multipoles is smaller, falling off as 1/l^2. The suppression is much smaller for N_{tot} > 59, therefore if the observable suppression originates in the fast roll stage, there is the upper bound N_{tot} ~ 59., Comment: Some comments and references added

We study the space-time evolution of ``flavor'' neutrino wave-packets at finite temperature and density in the early Universe prior to BBN. We implement non-equilibrium field theory methods and linear response to study the space-time evolution directly from the effective Dirac equation in the medium. There is a rich hierarchy of time scales associated with transverse and longitudinal dispersion and coherence. A phenomenon of ``freezing of coherence'' is a result of a competition between longitudinal dispersion and the separation of wave-packets of propagating modes in the medium. Near a resonance the coherence and oscillation time scales are enhanced by a factor $1/\sin2\theta$ compared to the vacuum. Collisional relaxation via charged and neutral currents occurs on time scales much shorter than the coherence time scale and for small vacuum mixing angle, shorter than the oscillation scale. Assuming that the momentum spread of the initial wave packet is determined by the large angle scattering mean free path of charged leptons, we find that the transverse dispersion time scale is the shortest and is responsible for a large suppression in both the survival and transition probabilities on time scales much shorter than the Hubble time. For small mixing angle the oscillation time scale is \emph{longer} than the collisional relaxation scale. The method also yields the evolution of right-handed wave packets. Neutrino oscillations in the early Universe prior to the epoch of primordial nucleosynthesis is studied by implementing real time non-equilibrium field theory methods. We focus on two flavors of Dirac neutrinos, however, the formulation is general. We obtain the equations of motion for neutrino wavepackets of either chirality and helicity in the plasma allowing for CP asymmetry. Contributions non-local in space-time to the self-energy dominate over the asymmetry for $T \gtrsim 3-5 \mathrm{MeV}$ if the lepton and neutrino asymmetries are of the same order as the baryon asymmetry. We find a new contribution which cannot be interpreted as the usual effective potential. The mixing angles and dispersion relations in the medium depend on \emph{helicity}. We find that resonant transitions are possible in the temperature range $ 10 \lesssim T \ll 100 \mathrm{MeV} $. Near a resonance in the mixing angle, the oscillation time scale in the medium as compared to the vacuum is \emph{slowed-down} substantially for small vacuum mixing angle. The time scale of oscillations \emph{speeds-up} for off resonance high energy neutrinos for which the mixing angle becomes vanishingly small. The equations of motion reduce to the familiar oscillation formulae for negative helicity ultrarelativistic neutrinos, but include consistently both the \emph{mixing angle and the oscillation frequencies in the medium}. Slow-roll inflation is studied as an effective field theory.We find as consistent form of the inflaton potential V(phi)=N M^4 w(phi/[sqrt{N}M_P]) where phi is the inflaton field, M the inflation energy scale, M_P the Planck mass, and N~50 the number of efolds since the relevant modes exited the horizon till the end of inflation. The dimensionless function w(chi) and field chi are O(1). The WMAP value for the amplitude of scalar adiabatic fluctuations |\Delta_{k ad}^(S)| fixes the inflation scale M ~ 0.77 10^16 GeV precisely at the GUT scale. This general form of the potential makes manifest that the slow roll expansion is an expansion in 1/N. Powers of 1/N count the orders in the slow roll expansion.This form of the inflaton potential suggests that the super symmetry breaking scale is at the inflation and GUT scales.A Ginzburg-Landau realization of this inflaton potential reveals that Hubble, inflaton mass and non-linear couplings are of the see-saw form in terms of the small ratio M/M_P. For example, the quartic coupling lambda ~ 1/N (M/M_P)^4.The smallness of the non-linear couplings is not a result of fine tuning but a natural consequence of the validity of the effective field theory. We obtain the effective inflaton potential during slow roll inflation by including the one loop quantum corrections to the energy momentum tensor from scalar curvature and tensor perturbations as well as quantum fluctuations from light scalars and light Dirac fermions generically coupled to the inflaton. During slow roll inflation there is a clean and unambiguous separation between superhorizon and subhorizon contributions to the energy momentum tensor. The superhorizon part is determined by the curvature perturbations and scalar field fluctuations: both feature infrared enhancements as the inverse of a combination of slow roll parameters which measure the departure from scale invariance in each case.Fermions and gravitons do not exhibit infrared divergences. The subhorizon part is completely specified by the trace anomaly of the fields with different spins and is solely determined by the space-time geometry. The one-loop quantum corrections to the amplitude of curvature and tensor perturbations are obtained to leading order in slow-roll and in the (H/M_PL)^2 expansion. This study provides a complete assessment of the backreaction problem up to one loop including bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom. The result validates the effective field theory description of inflation and confirms the robustness of the inflationary paradigm to quantum fluctuations. Neutrino collective excitations are studied in the Standard Model at high temperatures below the symmetry breaking scale. Two parameters determine the properties of the collective excitations: a mass scale $m_\nu=gT/4$ which determines the \emph{chirally symmetric} gaps in the spectrum and $\Delta=M^2_W(T)/2m_\nu T$. The spectrum consists of left handed negative helicity quasiparticles, left handed positive helicity quasiholes and their respective antiparticles. For $\Delta < \Delta_c = 1.275...$ there are two gapped quasiparticle branches and one gapless and two gapped quasihole branches, all but the higher gapped quasiparticle branches terminate at end points. For $\Delta_c < \Delta < \pi/2$ the quasiparticle spectrum features a pitchfork bifurcation and for $\Delta >\pi/2$ the collective modes are gapless quasiparticles with dispersion relation below the light cone for $k\ll m_\nu$ approaching the free field limit for $k\gg m_\nu$ with a rapid crossover between the soft non-perturbative to the hard perturbative regimes for $k\sim m_\nu$.The \emph{decay} of the vector bosons leads to a \emph{width} of the collective excitations of order $g^2$ which is explicitly obtained in the limits $k =0$ and $k\gg m_\nu \Delta$. At high temperature this damping rate is shown to be competitive with or larger than the collisional damping rate of order $G^2_F$ for a wide range of neutrino energy., Comment: 32 pages 16 figs. Precise cosmological data from WMAP and forthcoming CMB experiments motivate the study of the quantum corrections to the slowroll inflationary parameters.We find the quantum (loop) corrections to the equations of motion of the classical inflaton, its quantum fluctuations and the Friedmann equation in general single field slow roll inflation.We implement a renormalized effective field theory EFT approach based on an expansion in (H/M_{Pl})^2 and slow roll parameters epsilon_V,eta_V,sigma_V, xi_V.We find that the leading order quantum corrections to the inflaton effective potential and its equation of motion are determined by the power spectrum of scalar fluctuations. Its near scale invariance introduces a strong infrared behavior naturally regularized by the slow roll parameter Delta = eta_V-epsilon_V=(n_s-1)/2+r/8.To leading order in the EFT and slow roll expansions we find V_{eff}(Phi_0)=V_R(Phi_0)[1+(Delta^2_T/32)(n_s-1+3r/8) /(n_s-1+r/4)+higher orders]where n_s and r=Delta^2_T/Delta^2_R are the CMB observables that depend implicitly on Phi_0, and V_R(Phi_0) is the renormalized classical inflaton potential.This effective potential during slow roll inflation is strikingly different from the Minkowski space-time result.Superhorizon scalar field fluctuations grow for late times eta -> 0^- as |\eta|^{-1+Delta-d_} where d_ is a novel quantum correction to the scaling exponent related to the self decay of superhorizon inflaton fluctuations eta is the conformal time. We generalize this to the case of the inflaton interacting with a light scalar field. These quantum corrections arising from interactions will compete with higher order slow-roll corrections and must be taken into account for the precision determination of inflationary parameters., Comment: 21 pages, 1 figure

We clarify classical inflaton models by considering them as effective field theories `a la Ginzburg-Landau. In this approach, the WMAP statement excluding the pure phi^4 potential implies the presence of an inflaton mass term at the scale m ~ 10^{13}GeV.Chaotic, new and hybrid inflation models are studied in an unified manner.In all cases the inflaton potential takes the form V(phi)=m^2 M_{Pl}^2 v(phi/M_{Pl}), where all coefficients in v(varphi) are of order one.If such potential corresponds to supersymmetry breaking, the susy scale is sqrt{m M_{Pl}}~10^{16}GeV which coincides with the GUT scale. For red tilted spectrum new inflation turns to be favoured while for blue tilted spectrum, hybrid inflation turns to be the best choice.In both cases, we find an analytic formula relating the inflaton mass with r (tensor/scalar ratio) and the scalar spectral index ns: 10^6 m/M_{Pl} = 127 sqrt{r|1-n_s|} where the numerical coefficient follows from the WMAP amplitude. We review quantum phenomena during inflation which contribute to relevant observables in the CMB anisotropies and polarization and we focus on inflaton decay.The deviation from the scale invariant power spectrum is measured by a small parameter Delta.Delta regulates the infrared divergences too.In slow roll inflation, Delta is a simple function of the slow roll parameters. The quantum fluctuations can selfdecay in the inflationary expansion through processes forbidden in Minkowski. Particle decay during inflation is studied by implementing a dynamical renormalization group resummation combined with a small Delta expansion. Delta measures the deviation from the scale invariant power spectrum and regulates the infrared. In slow roll inflation, Delta is a simple function of the slow roll parameters epsilon_V, eta_V.We find that quantum fluctuations can self-decay as a consequence of the inflationary expansion through processes which are forbidden in Minkowski space-time. We compute the self-decay of the inflaton quantum fluctuations during slow roll inflation.For wavelengths deep inside the Hubble radius the decay is enhanced by the emission of ultrasoft collinear quanta, i.e. bremsstrahlung radiation of superhorizon quanta which becomes the leading decay channel for physical wavelengths H<3.6 10^{-9}., Comment: 27 pages, LaTex, 5 .eps figures, to appear in Phys. We study the dynamics of thermalization and the approach to equilibrium in the classical phi^4 theory in 1+1 spacetime dimensions. At thermal equilibrium we exploit the equivalence between the classical canonical averages and transfer matrix quantum traces of the anharmonic oscillator to obtain exact results for the temperature dependence of several observables, which provide a set of criteria for thermalization. We find that the Hartree approximation is remarkably accurate in equilibrium. The non-equilibrium dynamics is studied by numerically solving the equations of motion in light-cone coordinates for a broad range of initial conditions and energy densities.The time evolution is described by several stages with a cascade of energy towards the ultraviolet. After a transient stage, the spatio-temporal gradient terms become larger than the nonlinear term and a stage of universal cascade emerges.This cascade starts at a time scale t_0 independent of the initial conditions (except for very low energy density). Here the power spectra feature universal scaling behavior and the front of the cascade k(t) grows as a power law k(t) sim t^alpha with alpha lesssim 0.25. The wake behind the cascade is described as a state of Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (LTE) with all correlations being determined by the equilibrium functional form with an effective time dependent temperatureTeff(t) which slowly decreases as sim t^{-alpha}.Two well separated time scales emerge while Teff(t) varies slowly, the wavectors in the wake with k < k(t) attain LTE on much shorter time scales.This universal scaling stage ends when the front of the cascade reaches the cutoff at a time t_1 sim a^{-1/alpha}. Virialization starts to set much earlier than LTE. The real time evolution and relaxation of expectation values of quantum fields and of quantum states are computed as initial value problems by implementing the dynamical renormalization group (DRG).Linear response is invoked to set up the renormalized initial value problem to study the dynamics of the expectation value of quantum fields. The perturbative solution of the equations of motion for the field expectation values of quantum fields as well as the evolution of quantum states features secular terms, namely terms that grow in time and invalidate the perturbative expansion for late times. The DRG provides a consistent framework to resum these secular terms and yields a uniform asymptotic expansion at long times. Several relevant cases are studied in detail, including those of threshold infrared divergences which appear in gauge theories at finite temperature and lead to anomalous relaxation. In these cases the DRG is shown to provide a resummation akin to Bloch-Nordsieck but directly in real time and that goes beyond the scope of Bloch-Nordsieck and Dyson resummations. The nature of the resummation program is discussed in several examples. The DC electrical conductivity of an ultrarelativistic QED plasma is studied in real time by implementing the dynamical renormalization group. The conductivity is obtained from the realtime dependence of a dissipative kernel related to the retarded photon polarization. Pinch singularities in the imaginary part of the polarization are manifest as growing secular terms that in the perturbative expansion of this kernel. The leading secular terms are studied explicitly and it is shown that they are insensitive to the anomalous damping of hard fermions as a result of a cancellation between self-energy and vertex corrections. The resummation of the secular terms via the dynamical renormalization group leads directly to a renormalization group equation in real time, which is the Boltzmann equation for the (gauge invariant) fermion distribution function. A direct correspondence between the perturbative expansion and the linearized Boltzmann equation is established, allowing a direct identification of the self energy and vertex contributions to the collision term.We obtain a Fokker-Planck equation in momentum space that describes the dynamics of the departure from equilibrium to leading logarithmic order in the coupling.This determines that the transport time scale is given by t_{tr}=(24 pi)/[e^4 T \ln(1/e)}]. The solution of the Fokker-Planck equation approaches asymptotically the steady- state solution as sim e^{-t/(4.038 t_{tr})}.The steady-state solution leads to the conductivity sigma = 15.698 T/[e^2 ln(1/e)] to leading logarithmic order. We present a field-theoretical method to obtain consistently the equations of motion for small amplitude condensate perturbations in a homogeneous Bose-condensed gas directly in real time. It is based on linear response, and combines the Schwinger-Keldysh formulation of nonequilibrium quantum field theory with the Nambu-Gorkov formalism of quasiparticle excitations in the condensed phase and the tadpole method in quantum field theory. This method leads to causal equations of motion that allow to study the nonequilibrium evolution as an initial value problem. It also allows to extract directly the Ward identities, which are a consequence of the underlying gauge symmetry and which in equilibrium lead to the Hugenholtz-Pines theorem. An explicit one-loop calculation of the equations of motion beyond the Hartree-Fock- Bogoliubov approximation reveals that the nonlocal, absorptive contributions to the self-energies corresponding to the Beliaev and Landau damping processes are necessary to fulfill the Ward identities \emph{in} or \emph{out} of equilibrium. The perturbative approach to the description of long wavelength excitations at high temperature breaks down near the critical point of a second order phase transition. We study the \emph{dynamics} of these excitations in a relativistic scalar field theory at and near the critical point via a renormalization group approach at high temperature and an $\epsilon$ expansion in $d=5-\epsilon$ space-time dimensions. The long wavelength physics is determined by a non-trivial fixed point of the renormalization group. At the critical point we find that the dispersion relation and width of quasiparticles of momentum $p$ is $\omega_p \sim p^{z}$ and $\Gamma_p \sim (z-1) \omega_p$ respectively, the group velocity of quasiparticles $v_g \sim p^{z-1}$ vanishes in the long wavelength limit at the critical point. Away from the critical point for $T\gtrsim T_c$ we find $\omega_p \sim \xi^{-z}[1+(p \xi)^{2z}]^{{1/2}}$ and $\Gamma_p \sim (z-1) \omega_p \frac{(p \xi)^{2z}}{1+(p \xi)^{2z}}$ with $\xi$ the finite temperature correlation length $ \xi \propto |T-T_c|^{-\nu}$. The new \emph{dynamical} exponent $z$ results from anisotropic renormalization in the spatial and time directions. For a theory with O(N) symmetry we find $z=1+ \epsilon \frac{N+2}{(N+8)^2}+\mathcal{O}(\epsilon^2)$. We study the real-time nonequilibrium dynamics in hot QED plasmas implementing a dynamical renormalization group and using the hard thermal loop (HTL) approximation. The focus is on the study of the relaxation of gauge and fermionic mean fields and on the quantum kinetics of the photon and fermion distribution functions. For semihard photons of momentum eT << k << T we find to leading order in the HTL that the gauge mean field relaxes in time with a power law as a result of infrared enhancement of the spectral density near the Landau damping threshold. The dynamical renormalization group reveals the emergence of detailed balance for microscopic time scales larger than 1/k while the rates are still varying with time. The quantum kinetic equation for the photon distribution function allows us to study photon production from a thermalized quark-gluon plasma (QGP) by off-shell effects. We find that for a QGP at temperature T ~ 200 MeV and of lifetime 10 < t < 50 fm/c the hard (k ~ T) photon production from off-shell bremsstrahlung (q -> q \gamma and \bar{q} -> \bar{q}\gamma) at O(\alpha) grows logarithmically in time and is comparable to that produced from on-shell Compton scattering and pair annihilation at O(\alpha \alpha_s). Fermion mean fields relax as e^{-\alpha T t ln(\omega_P t)} with \omega_P=eT/3 the plasma frequency, as a consequence of the emission and absorption of soft magnetic photons. A quantum kinetic equation for hard fermions is obtained directly in real time from a field theoretical approach improved by the dynamical renormalization group. Critical slowing down of the relaxation of the order parameter is relevant both in early the universe and in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. We study the relaxation rate of the order parameter in an O(N) scalar theory near the critical point to model the non-equilibrium dynamics of critical fluctuations near the chiral phase transition.A lowest order perturbative calculation (two loops in the coupling lambda) reveals the breakdown of perturbation theory for long-wavelength fluctuations in the critical region and the emergence of a hierarchy of scales with hard q>T, semisoft T >> q >> lambda T and soft lambda T>>q loop momenta which are widely separated for weak coupling. The non-perturbative resummation in the large N limit reveals the renormalization of the interaction and the crossover to an effective 3D-theory for soft momenta.The effective 3D coupling goes to the Wilson-Fisher 3D fixed point in the soft limit.The relaxation rate of the order parameter for wave vectors lambda T >>k>> k_{us} or near the critical temperature lambda T>>m_T>>k_{us} with the ultra soft scale k_{us} = [(lambda T)/(4pi)] exp[-(4pi/lambda)] is dominated by classical semisoft loop momentum leading to Gamma(k,T) = lambda T/(2 pi N). For wavectors k<< k_{us} the damping rate is dominated by hard loop momenta and given by Gamma(k,T)=4 pi T/[3N ln(T/k)]. Analogously, for homogeneous fluctuations in the ultracritical region m_T<

The dynamics of a symmetry breaking phase transition is studied in a radiation and matter dominated spatially flat FRW cosmology in the large N limit of a scalar field theory.The quantum density matrix is evolved from an initial state of quasiparticles in thermal equilibrium at a temperature higher than the critical. The cosmological expansion decreases the temperature and triggers the phase transition. We identify three different time scales: an early regime dominated by linear instabilities and the exponential growth of long-wavelength fluctuations,an intermediate scale when the field fluctuations probe the broken symmetry states and an asymptotic scale wherein a scaling regime emerges for modes of wavelength comparable to or larger than the horizon.The scaling regime is characterized by a dynamical physical correlation length xi_{phys} = d_H(t) with d_H(t) the size of the causal horizon, thus there is one correlated region per causal horizon. Inside these correlated regions the field fluctuations sample the broken symmetry states. The amplitude of the long-wavelength fluctuations becomes non-perturbatively large due to the early times instabilities and a semiclassical but stochastic description emerges in the asymptotic regime. In the scaling regime, the power spectrum is peaked at zero momentum revealing the onset of a Bose-Einstein condensate.The scaling solution results in that the equation of state of the scalar fields is the same as that of the background fluid. This implies a Harrison-Zeldovich spectrum of scalar density perturbations for long-wavelengths. We study the generation of a non-equilibrium plasma in scalar QED with N charged scalar fields through spinodal instabilities in the case of a super cooled second order phase transition and parametric amplification when the order parameter oscillates with large amplitude around the minimum of the potential.The focus is to study the non-equilibrium electromagnetic properties of the plasma, such as photon production, electric and magnetic screening and conductivity. A novel kinetic equation is introduced to compute photon production far away from equilibrium in the large N limit and lowest order in the electromagnetic coupling.During the early stages of the dynamics the photon density grows exponentially and asymptotically the amplitude and frequency distribution becomes \sim alpha m^2/[lambda^2 \omega^3] with lambda the scalar self-coupling and m the scalar mass.In the case of a phase transition,electric and magnetic fields are correlated on distances xi(t) \sim sqrt{t} during the early stages and the power spectrum is peaked at low momentum. Magnetic and Debye screening masses are defined out of equilibrium. The magnetic mass vanishes out of equilibrium in this abelian models. The Debye mass turns to be m^2_{Deb} \sim alpha m^2/lambda for a supercooled phase transition while in the case of an oscillating order parameter an interpolating time dependent Debye mass grows as alpha sqrt{m t}/lambda due to a non-linear resonance at low momentum in the charged particle distribution. The build-up of the transverse electric conductivity is studied during the formation of the non-equilibrium plasma. Its long wavelength limit reaches a value sigma_{k\approx 0} \sim alpha m/lambda at the end of the stage of linear instabilities. The real time non-equilibrium evolution of condensates in field theory requires an initial value problem specifying an initial quantum state or density matrix. Arbitrary specifications of the initial quantum state (pure or mixed) results in initial time singularities which are not removed by the usual renormalization counterterms. We study the initial time singularities in the linearized equation of motion for the scalar condensate in a renormalizable Yukawa theory in 3+1 dimensions. In this renormalizable theory the initial time singularities are enhanced. We present a consistent method for removing these initial time singularities by specifying initial states where the distribution of high energy quanta is determined by the initial conditions and the interaction effects. This is done through a Bogoliubov transformation which is consistently obtained in a perturbative expansion.The usual renormalization counterterms and the proper choice of the Bogoliubov coefficients lead to a singularity free evolution equation. We establish the relationship between the evolution equations in the linearized approximation and linear response theory. It is found that only a very specific form of the external source for linear response leads to a real time evolution equation which is singularity free. We focus on the evolution of spatially inhomogeneous scalar condensates by implementing the initial state preparation via a Bogoliubov transformation up to one-loop. As a concrete application, the evolution equation for an inhomogenous condensate is solved analytically and the results are carefully analyzed. We analyze the non-equilibrium dynamics of the O(N) Phi^4 model in the large N limit and for states of large energy density. The dynamics is dramatically different when the energy density is above the top of the tree level potential V_0 than when it is below it.When the energy density is below V_0, we find that non-perturbative particle production through spinodal instabilities provides a dynamical mechanism for the Maxwell construction. The asymptotic values of the order parameter only depend on the initial energy density and all values between the minima of the tree level potential are available, the asymptotic dynamical `effective potential' is flat between the minima. When the energy density is larger than V_0, the evolution samples ergodically the broken symmetry states, as a consequence of non-perturbative particle production via parametric amplification. Furthermore, we examine the quantum dynamics of phase ordering into the broken symmetry phase and find novel scaling behavior of the correlation function. There is a crossover in the dynamical correlation length at a time scale t_s \sim \ln(1/lambda). For t < t_s the dynamical correlation length \xi(t) \propto \sqrt{t} and the evolution is dominated by spinodal instabilities, whereas for t>t_s the evolution is non-linear and dominated by the onset of non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensation of long-wavelength Goldstone bosons.In this regime a true scaling solution emerges with a non- perturbative anomalous scaling length dimension z=1/2 and a dynamical correlation length \xi(t) \propto (t-t_s). The equal time correlation function in this scaling regime vanishes for r>2(t-t_s) by causality. For t > t_s the equal time correlation function falls of as 1/r. The real time evolution of field condensates is solved for small and large field amplitudes in scalar theories.For small amplitudes,the quantum equations of motion for the condensate can be linearized and solved by Laplace transform. The late time evolution turns to be determined by the singularities in the complex plane (one-particle poles, two- and multi- particle cuts, Landau cuts for non-zero initial temperature). In hot scalar electrodynamics, we solve the real time evolution of field condensates with soft length scales \sim k^{-1}>(eT)^{-1}. Transverse gauge invariant condensates relax as 1/t^2 to amplitudes determined by the quasiparticle poles. We rederive the HTL action using the non-equilibrium field theory techniques.In the nonlinear regime (for large initial energy densities) we analyze the dynamics of dissipation and relaxation in scalar theory after linear unstabilities are shut-off by the quantum back-reaction. A new time scale emerges that separates the linear from the non-linear regimes. This scale is non-perturbative in the coupling and initial amplitude. A combination of numerical analysis and the implementation of a dynamical renormalization group resummation via multi-time scale analysis reveals the presence of unstable bands in the nonlinear regime. We introduce the method of dynamical renormalization group to study relaxation and damping out of equilibrium directly in real time and applied it to the study of infrared divergences in scalar QED. This method allows a consistent resummation of infrared effects associated with the exchange of quasistatic transverse photons and leads to anomalous logarithmic relaxation of the form $e^{-\alpha T t \ln[t/t_0]}$ which prevents a quasiparticle interpretation of charged collective excitations at finite temperature. The hard thermal loop resummation program is incorporated consistently into the dynamical renormalization group yielding a picture of relaxation and damping phenomena in a plasma in real time that trascends the conceptual limitations of the quasiparticle picture and other type of resummation schemes. We establish a self-consistent variational framework that allows us to study numerically the non-equilibrium evolution of non-perturbative inhomogeneous field configurations including quantum backreaction effects. After discussing the practical merits and disadvantages of different approaches we provide a closed set of local and renormalizable update equations that determine the dynamical evolution of inhomogeneous condensates and can be implemented numerically. These incorporate self-consistently the backreaction of quantum fluctuations and particle production. This program requires the solution of a self-consistent inhomogeneous problem to provide initial Cauchy data for the inhomogeneous condensates and Green's functions. We provide a simple solvable ansatz for such an initial value problem for the Sine-Gordon and phi^4 quantum field theories in one spatial dimension. We compare exact known results of the Sine Gordon model to this simple ansatz. We also study the linear sigma model in the large N limit in three spatial dimensions as a microscopic model for pion production in ultrarelativistic collisions. We provide a solvable self- consistent ansatz for the initial value problem with cylindrical symmetry. For this case we also obtain a closed set of local and renormalized update equations that can be numerically implemented. The energy and time scales during the inflationary stage of the universe calls for an out of equilibrium quantum field treatment. Moreover, the high energy densities involved make necessary the use of non-perturbative approaches as large N and Hartree methods. We start these lectures by introducing such non-perturbative out of equilibrium methods in cosmological universes. We discuss the renormalization procedure and the choice of initial conditions. We then study the nonlinear dynamics of quantum fields in matter and radiation dominated FRW and de Sitter universes. For a variety of initial conditions, we compute the evolution of the inflaton,its quantum fluctuations and the equation of state. We investigate the explosive particle production due to spinodal unstabilities and parametric amplification in FRW and de Sitter universes with and without symmetry breaking.We find that the particle production is sensitive to the expansion of the universe.For symmetry breaking scenarios, we determine generic late time fields behavior for FRW and deSitter cosmologies.We find that quantum fluctuations damp in FRW as the square of the scale factor while the order parameter approaches a minimum of the potential at the same rate.We con- sider an O(N) inflaton model coupled self-consistently to gravity in the semi- classical approximation for a `new inflation' scenario. We find that spinodal instabilities drive the growth of non-perturbatively large quantum fluctuations which shut off inflation. These fluctuations assemble with the inflaton zero mode yielding a new effective field that actually rolls down behaving classi- cally. We compute the amplitude and index for scalar density and tensor perturbations. We analyze the dynamics of dissipation and relaxation in the unbroken and broken symmetry phases of scalar theory in the nonlinear regime for large initial energy densities, and after linear unstabilities (parametric or spinodal) are shut-off by the quantum backreaction. A new time scale emerges that separates the linear from the non-linear regimes. This scale is non- perturbative in the coupling and initial amplitude. The non-perturbative evolution is studied in the large the N limit for the O(N) vector model. A combination of numerical analysis and the multitime scale analysis reveals the presence of unstable bands in the nonlinear regime. These are associated with power law growth of quantum fluctuations, that result in power law relaxation and dissipation with non-universal and non-perturbative dynamical anomalous exponents.We find substantial particle production during this non-linear evolu- tion which is of the same order as that in the linear regime. The expectation value of the scalar field vanishes asymptotically transferring all of the initial energy into produced particles via the non-linear resonances in the unbroken symmetry phase.The effective mass for the quantum modes tends asympto- tically to a constant plus oscillating O(1/t) terms. This slow decay causes the power behaviour in the modes which become free for t=infty. We derive a simple expression for the equation of state for the fluid of produced particles that interpolates between radiation-type and dust-type equations according to the initial value of the order parameter for unbroken symmetry. For broken symmetry the produced particles are massless Goldstone bosons with a radiation-type equation of state. We study the non-equilibrium dynamics of domain walls in real time for $\phi^4$ and Sine Gordon models in 1+1 dimensions in the dilute regime. The equation of motion for the collective coordinate is obtained by integrating out the meson excitations around the domain wall to one-loop order. The real-time non-equilibrium relaxation is studied analytically and numerically to this order. The constant friction coefficient vanishes but there is dynamical friction and relaxation caused by off-shell non-Markovian effects. The validity of a Markovian description is studied in detail. The proper Langevin equation is obtained to this order, the noise is Gaussian and additive but colored. We analyze the classical and hard thermal loop contributions to the self-energy and noise kernels and show that at temperatures larger than the meson mass the hard contributions are negligible and the finite temperature contribution to the dynamics is governed by the classical soft modes of the meson bath. The long time relaxational dynamics is completely dominated by classical Landau damping resulting in that the corresponding time scales are not set by the temperature but by the meson mass. At the end of the inflationary stage of the early universe, profuse particle production leads to the reheating of the universe. Such explosive particle production is due to parametric amplification of quantum fluctuations for the unbroken symmetry case (appropriate for chaotic inflation), or spinodal instabilities in the broken symmetry phase(which is the case in new inflation). The self-consistent methods presented in these lectures are the only approaches, so far, that lead to reliable quantitative results on the reheating mechanism in the inflationary universe. They fully use the field theoretical Schwinger-Keldysh out of equilibrium method in a non-perturbative way. These approaches take into account the non-linear interaction between the quantum modes and exactly conserve energy (covariantly). Simplified analysis that do not include the full backreaction and do not conserve energy, result in unbound particle production and lead to quantitatively erroneous results. For spontaneously broken theories the issue of whether the symmetry may be restored or not by the quantum fluctuations is analyzed. The precise criterion for symmetry restoration is presented. The field dynamics is symmetric when the energy density in the initial state is larger than the top of the tree level potential. We analyze the phenomenon of preheating,i.e. explosive particle production due to parametric amplification of quantum fluctuations in the unbroken case, or spinodal instabilities in the broken phase, using the Minkowski space $O(N)$ vector model in the large $N$ limit to study the non-perturbative issues involved. We give analytic results for weak couplings and times short compared to the time at which the fluctuations become of the same order as the tree level,as well as numerical results including the full backreaction.In the case where the symmetry is unbroken, the analytic results agree spectacularly well with the numerical ones in their common domain of validity. In the broken symmetry case, slow roll initial conditions from the unstable minimum at the origin, give rise to a new and unexpected phenomenon: the dynamical relaxation of the vacuum energy.That is, particles are abundantly produced at the expense of the quantum vacuum energy while the zero mode comes back to almost its initial value.In both cases we obtain analytically and numerically the equation of state which turns to be written in terms of an effective polytropic index that interpolates between vacuum and radiation-like domination. We find that simplified analysis based on harmonic behavior of the zero mode, giving rise to a Mathieu equation forthe non-zero modes miss important physics. Furthermore, analysis that do not include the full backreaction do not conserve energy, resulting in unbound particle production. Our results do not support the recent claim of symmetry restoration by non-equilibrium fluctuations.Finally estimates of the reheating temperature are given,as well as a discussion of the inconsistency of a kinetic approach to thermalization when a non-perturbatively large number of particles is created., Comment: Latex file, 52 pages and 24 figures in .ps files. We propose a gauge invariant formulation of the effective potential in terms of a gauge invariant order parameter, for the Abelian Higgs model. The one-loop contribution at zero and finite temperature is computed explicitly, and the leading terms in the high temperature expansion are obtained. The result is contrasted to the effective potential obtained in several covariant gauge-fixing schemes, and the gauge invariant quantities that can be reliably extracted from these are identified. It is pointed out that the gauge invariant effective potential in the one-loop approximation is complex for {\em all values} of the order parameter between the maximum and the minimum of the tree level potential, both at zero and non-zero temperature. The imaginary part is related to long-wavelength instabilities towards phase separation. We study the real-time dynamics of initial states in the spinodal region, and relate the imaginary part of the effective potential to the growth rate of equal-time gauge invariant correlation functions in these states. We conjecture that the spinodal instabilities may play a role in non-equilibrium processes {\em inside} the nucleating bubbles if the transition is first order., Comment: 27 pages revtex 3.0, no figures; one reference added

We consider the case of a scalar field, the inflaton, coupled to both lighter scalars and fermions, and the study the relaxation of the inflaton via particle production in both the linear and non-linear regimes. This has an immediate application to the reheating problem in inflationary universe models. The linear regime analysis offers a rationale for the standard approach to the reheating problem, but we make a distinction between relaxation and thermalization. We find that particle production when the inflaton starts in the {\it non-linear} region is typically a far more efficient way of transfering energy out of the inflaton zero mode and into the quanta of the lighter scalar than single particle decay. For the non-linear regime we take into account self-consistently the evolution of the expectation value of the inflaton field coupled to the evolution of the quantum fluctuations. An exhaustive numerical analysis reveals that the distribution of produced particles is far from thermal, and the effect of open channels. In the fermionic case, Pauli blocking begins to hinder the transfer of energy into the fermion modes very early on in the evolution of the inflaton. In this brief review we introduce the methods of quantum field theory out of equilibrium and study the non-equilibrium aspects of phase transitions. Specifically we critically study the picture of the ``slow-roll'' phase transition in the new inflationary models, we show that the instabilities that are the hallmark of the phase transition, that is the formation of correlated domains, dramatically change this picture. We analyze in detail the dynamics of phase separation in strongly supercooled phase transitions in Minkowski space. We argue that this is typically the situation in weakly coupled scalar theories. The effective evolution equations for the expectation value and the fluctuations of an inflaton field in a FRW cosmology are derived both in the loop expansion and in a self-consistent non-perturbative scheme. Finally we use these non-equilibrium techniques and concepts to study the influence of quantum and thermal fluctuations on the dynamics of a proposed mechanism for the formation of disoriented chiral condensates during a rapid phase transition out of equilibrium. We study the process of thermal activation mediated by sphaleron transitions by analyzing the real-time dynamics of the decay out of equilibrium in a $1+1$ dimensional field theory with a metastable state. The situation considered is that of a rapid supercooling in which the system is trapped in a metastable state at a temperature larger than the mass of the quanta, but smaller than the energy to create a critical droplet. The initial density matrix is evolved in time and the nucleation rate (probability current at the saddle point) is computed. The nucleation rate is {\it time dependent}, vanishing at early times, reaching a maximum at a time $t \approx 1/m$ with $m$ the mass of quanta in the metastable state, and decreasing at long times as a consequence of unitarity. We calculate the decay rate for a state prepared in a thermal density matrix centered on a metastable ground state. We find a rate that is intrinsically time {\it dependent}, as opposed to the {\it constant} rates of previous works. The rate vanishes at early times, rises to a maximum and eventually falls-off to zero as a consequence of unitary time evolution. We study the dynamics of phase transitions out of equilibrium in weakly coupled scalar field theories. We consider the case in which there is a rapid supercooling from an initial symmetric phase in thermal equilibrium at temperature $T_i>T_c$ to a final state at low temperature $T_f \approx 0$. In particular we study the formation and growth of correlated domains out of equilibrium. It is shown that the dynamics of the process of domain formation and growth (spinodal decomposition) cannot be studied in perturbation theory, and a non-perturbative self-consistent Hartree approximation is used to study the long time evolution. We find in weakly coupled theories that the size of domains grow at long times as $\xi_D(t) \approx \sqrt{t\xi(0)}$. For very weakly coupled theories, their final size is several times the zero temperature correlation length. In a scalar field theory, when the tree level potential admits broken symmetry ground states, the quantum corrections to the static effective potential are complex.
