Search

An emerging commonality among the recently observed pulsar halos is the presence of distinct radiation patterns at high energies, while no extended radiation is detected around the GeV energy band. This commonality suggests that pulsar halos play a crucial role in the local propagation of cosmic rays, making it necessary to investigate the underlying mechanisms of this phenomenon. This work focuses on the 3D propagation study of cosmic rays, incorporating the Geminga pulsar into our propagation model to investigate its contribution to different observational spectra. We consider Geminga a dominant local source of positrons, successfully reproducing the observed positron spectrum and multi-energy spectra of the Geminga halo. Through calculations of signal and background at different angles, we find that: (1) at low energies, the slow diffusion characteristic around the pulsar region leads to a low electron density in the extended area around Geminga, causing the background radiation to exceed the signal intensity far; (2) at high energies, the larger effective diffusion radius of high-energy electrons/positrons causes the signal from Geminga to dominate the local high-energy phenomena; (3) the observed fluctuation of diffuse gamma-ray radiation by LHAASO is likely due to the incomplete subtraction of radiation from the local halo. We hope LHAASO will detect more cosmic ray halo sources to validate our model further.

The origin of the binary black hole mergers observed by LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) remains an open question. We calculate the merger rate from primordial black holes (PBHs) within the density spike around supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at the center of galaxies. We show that the merger rate within the spike is comparable to that within the wider dark matter halo. We also calculate the extreme mass ratio inspiral (EMRI) signal from PBHs hosted within the density spike spiralling into their host SMBHs due to GW emission. We predict that LISA may detect $\sim10^4$ of these EMRIs with signal-to-noise ratio of 5 within a 4-year observation run, if all dark matter is made up of PBHs. The GD-1 stellar stream exhibits spur and gap structures that may result from a close encounter with a dense substructure. When interpreted as a dark matter subhalo, the perturber is denser than predicted in the standard cold dark matter (CDM) model. In self-interacting dark matter (SIDM), however, a halo could evolve into a phase of gravothermal collapse, resulting in a higher central density than its CDM counterpart. We conduct high-resolution controlled N-body simulations to show that a collapsed SIDM halo could account for the GD-1 perturber's high density. We model a progenitor halo with a mass of $3\times10^8~M_\odot$, motivated by a cosmological simulation of a Milky Way analog, and evolve it in the Milky Way's tidal field. For a cross section per mass of $\sigma/m\approx30-100~{\rm cm^2~g^{-1}}$ at $V_{\rm max }\sim10~{\rm km~s^{-1}}$, the enclosed mass of the SIDM halo within the inner $10~{\rm pc}$ can be increased by more than an order of magnitude compared to its CDM counterpart, leading to a good agreement with the properties of the GD-1 perturber. We combine the semi-analytical structure formation model, SASHIMI, which predicts subhalo populations in collisionless, cold dark matter (CDM), with a parametric model that maps CDM halos to self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) halos. The resulting model, SASHIMI-SIDM, generates SIDM subhalo populations down to sub-galactic mass scales, for an arbitrary input cross section, in minutes. We show that SASHIMI-SIDM agrees with SIDM subhalo populations from high-resolution cosmological zoom-in simulations in resolved regimes. Crucially, we predict that the fraction of core-collapsed subhalos peaks at a mass scale determined by the input SIDM cross section and decreases toward higher halo masses, consistent with the predictions of gravothermal models and cosmological simulations. For the first time, we also show that the core-collapsed fraction decreases toward lower halo masses; this result is uniquely enabled by our semi-analytical approach. As a proof of principle, we apply SASHIMI-SIDM to predict the boost to the local dark matter density and annihilation rate from core-collapsed SIDM subhalos, which can be enhanced relative to CDM by an order of magnitude for viable SIDM models. Thus, SASHIMI-SIDM provides an efficient and reliable tool for scanning SIDM parameter space and testing it with astrophysical observations. Dark matter (DM) halos can be subject to gravothermal collapse if the DM is not collisionless, but engaged in strong self-interactions. When the scattering can efficiently transfer heat from the centre to the outskirts, the central region of the halo collapses and reaches densities much higher than those for collisionless DM. This phenomenon is potentially observable in studies of strong lensing. Current theoretical efforts are motivated by observations of surprisingly dense substructures. A comparison with observations requires accurate predictions. One method to obtain such predictions is to use N-body simulations. Collapsed halos are extreme systems that pose challenges when applying state-of-the-art codes to model self-interacting dark matter (SIDM). We investigate the root of such problems, with a focus on energy non-conservation and discuss possible strategies to avoid them. We ran N-body simulations, with and without SIDM, of an isolated DM-only halo and we adjusted the numerical parameters to check the accuracy of the simulation. We find that not only the numerical scheme for SIDM can lead to energy non-conservation, but also the modelling of gravitational interaction and the time integration are problematic. The issues we find are: (a) particles changing their time step in a non-time-reversible manner; (b) the asymmetry in the tree-based gravitational force evaluation; and (c) SIDM velocity kicks breaking the time symmetry. Tuning the parameters of the simulation allows us to conserve energy not only at early stages of the evolution, but also later on. However, the cost of the simulations becomes prohibitively large. Some of the problems that make the simulations of the gravothermal collapse phase inaccurate can be overcome by choosing appropriate numerical schemes. However, other issues still pose a challenge. van Dokkum et al. (arXiv:2309.07969) reported the discovery of JWST-ER1, a strong lensing object at redshift $z\approx2$, using data from the James Webb Space Telescope. The lens mass within the Einstein ring is $5.9$ times higher than the expected stellar mass from a Chabrier initial mass function, indicating a high dark matter density. In this work, we show that a cold dark matter halo, influenced by gas-driven adiabatic contraction, can account for the observed lens mass. We interpret the measurement of JWST-ER1 in the self-interacting dark matter scenario and show that the cross section per particle mass $\sigma/m\approx0.1~{\rm cm^2/g}$ is generally favored. Intriguingly, $\sigma/m\approx0.1~{\rm cm^2/g}$ can also be consistent with the strong lensing observations of early-type galaxies at redshift $z\approx0.2$, where adiabatic contraction is not observed overall., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJL

The satellite galaxy Crater II of the Milky Way is extremely cold and exceptionally diffuse. These unusual properties are challenging to understand in the standard model of cold dark matter. We investigate the formation of Crater II in self-interacting dark matter (SIDM), where dark matter particles can scatter and thermalize. We conduct a series of controlled N-body simulations to model the tidal evolution of Crater II, varying the self-interacting cross section, orbit parameters, and initial stellar distribution. Dark matter self-interactions lead to halo core formation and the distribution of stars expands accordingly. A cored SIDM halo also boosts tidal mass loss, allowing for a high orbit. Our simulations show that SIDM halos with a $1~{\rm kpc}$ core can simultaneously explain the low stellar velocity dispersion and the large half-light radius of Crater II, remaining robust to the initial distribution of stars. We report results of a search for dark-matter-nucleon interactions via a dark mediator using optimized low-energy data from the PandaX-4T liquid xenon experiment. With the ionization-signal-only data and utilizing the Migdal effect, we set the most stringent limits on the cross section for dark matter masses ranging from 30~$\rm{MeV/c^2}$ to 2~$\rm{GeV/c^2}$. Under the assumption that the dark mediator is a dark photon that decays into scalar dark matter pairs in the early Universe, we rule out significant parameter space of such thermal relic dark-matter model., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The presence of a central baryonic potential can have a significant impact on the gravothermal evolution of self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) haloes. We extend a semi-analytical fluid model to incorporate the influence of a static baryonic potential and calibrate it using controlled N-body simulations. We construct benchmark scenarios with varying baryon concentrations and different SIDM models, including constant and velocity-dependent self-interacting cross sections. The presence of the baryonic potential induces changes in SIDM halo properties, including central density, core size, and velocity dispersion, and it accelerates the halo's evolution in both expansion and collapse phases. Furthermore, we observe a quasi-universality in the gravothermal evolution of SIDM haloes with the baryonic potential, resembling a previously known feature in the absence of the baryons. By appropriately rescaling the physical quantities that characterize the SIDM haloes, the evolution of all our benchmark cases exhibits remarkable similarity. The properties of low-mass dark matter halos appear to be remarkably diverse relative to predictions of cold, collisionless dark matter, even in the presence of baryons. We show that self-interacting dark matter can simultaneously explain two extreme measurements of halo diversity in different directions -- namely, the rotation curves of low-concentration halos associated with gas-rich ultra-diffuse galaxies in the field and the inner density profile of the dense substructure perturbing the strong lens galaxy SDSSJ0946+1006. We present the first cosmological zoom-in simulation featuring strong dark matter self-interactions in a galaxy group environment centered on a $10^{13}~M_{\mathrm{\odot}}$ host halo. These interactions produce kiloparsec-scale cores in low-concentration isolated halos, which could host the ultra-diffuse galaxies, while most surviving subhalos of the group-mass host are deeply core-collapsed, yielding excellent candidates for the observed dense strong-lens perturber. We propose a parametric model for studying self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) halos. The model uses an analytical density profile, calibrated using a controlled N-body SIDM simulation that covers the entire gravothermal evolution, including core-forming and -collapsing phases. By normalizing the calibrated density profile, we obtain a universal description for SIDM halos at any evolution phase. The model allows us to infer properties of SIDM halos based on their cold dark matter (CDM) counterparts. As a basic application, we only require two characteristic parameters of an isolated CDM halo at $z=0$. We then extend the model to incorporate effects induced by halo mass changes, such as major mergers or tidal stripping, making it applicable to both isolated halos and subhalos. The dense environment of neutron stars makes them an excellent target for probing dark matter interactions with the Standard Model. We study neutron star heating from capture of inelastic dark matter, which can evade direct detection constraints. We investigate kinematics of the inelastic scattering process between quasirelativistic dark matter particles and ultrarelativistic targets in neutron stars, and derive analytical expressions for the maximal mass gap allowed for the scattering to occur. We implement them into a fully relativistic formalism for calculating the capture rate and apply it to various scenarios of inelastic dark matter. The projected constraints from neutron stars can systematically surpass those from terrestrial searches, including direct detection and collider experiments. Neutron stars can also be sensitive to the parameter space of inelastic self-interacting dark matter. We use network theory to study topological features in the hierarchical clustering of dark matter halos. We use public halo catalogs from cosmological N-body simulations and construct tree graphs that connect halos within main halo systems. Our analysis shows these graphs exhibit a power-law degree distribution with an exponent of $-2$, and possess scale-free and self-similar properties according to the criteria of graph metrics. We propose a random graph model with preferential attachment kernels, which effectively incorporate the effects of minor mergers, major mergers, and tidal stripping. Dark matter annihilation might power the first luminous stars in the Universe. These types of stars, known as dark stars, could form in $(10^6\mathrm{-}10^8)\,M_\odot$ protohalos at redshifts $z \sim 20$, and they could be much more luminous and larger in size than ordinary stars powered by nuclear fusion. We investigate the formation of dark stars in the self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) scenario. We present a concrete particle physics model of SIDM that can simultaneously give rise to the observed dark matter density, satisfy constraints from astrophysical and terrestrial searches, and address the various small-scale problems of collisionless dark matter via the self-interactions. In this model, the power from dark matter annihilation is deposited in the baryonic gas in environments where dark stars could form. We further study the evolution of SIDM density profiles in the protohalos at $z \sim 20$. As the baryon cloud collapses due to the various cooling processes, the deepening gravitational potential can speed up gravothermal evolution of the SIDM halo, yielding sufficiently high dark matter densities for dark stars to form. We find that SIDM-powered dark stars can have similar properties, such as their luminosity and size, as dark stars predicted in collisionless dark matter models., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures. We study gravothermal evolution of dark matter halos in the presence of differential self-scattering that has strong velocity and angular dependencies. We design controlled N-body simulations to model Rutherford and Moller scatterings in the halo, and follow its evolution in both core-expansion and -collapse phases. The simulations show the commonly-used transfer cross section underestimates the effects of dark matter self-interactions, but the viscosity cross section provides an accurate approximation for modeling angular-dependent dark matter scattering. We investigate thermodynamic properties of the halo, and find that the three moments of the Boltzmann equation under the fluid approximation are satisfied. We further propose a constant effective cross section, which integrates over the halo's characteristic velocity dispersion with weighting kernels motivated by kinetic theory of heat conduction. The effective cross section provides a good approximation to differential self-scattering for most of the halo evolution. We analyze circular velocity profiles of seven ultradiffuse galaxies (UDGs) that are isolated and gas-rich. Assuming that the dark matter halos of these UDGs have a Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) density profile or a Read density profile (which allows for constant-density cores), the inferred halo concentrations are systematically lower than the cosmological median, even as low as $-0.6$ dex (about $5\sigma$ away) in some cases. Alternatively, similar fits can be obtained with a density profile that scales roughly as $1/r^2$ for radii larger than a few kiloparsecs. Both solutions require the radius where the halo circular velocity peaks ($R_{\rm max}$) to be much larger than the median expectation. Surprisingly, we find an overabundance of such large-$R_{\rm max}$ halos in the IllustrisTNG dark-matter-only simulations compared to the Gaussian expectation. These halos form late and have higher spins compared to median halos of similar masses. The inner densities of the most extreme among these late-forming halos are higher than their NFW counterparts, leading to a $\sim 1/r^2$ density profile. However, the two well-resolved UDGs in our sample strongly prefer lower dark matter densities in the center than the simulated ones. Comparing to IllustrisTNG hydrodynamical simulations, we also find a tension in getting both low enough circular velocities and high enough halo mass to accommodate the measurements. The non-linear process of cosmic structure formation produces gravitationally bound overdensities of dark matter known as halos. The abundances, density profiles, ellipticities, and spins of these halos can be tied to the underlying fundamental particle physics that governs dark matter at microscopic scales. Thus, macroscopic measurements of dark matter halos offer a unique opportunity to determine the underlying properties of dark matter across the vast landscape of dark matter theories. Theoretical investigations into the evolution of the early universe are an essential part of particle physics that allow us to identify viable extensions to the Standard Model as well as motivated parameter space that can be probed by various experiments and observations. In this white paper, we review particle physics models of the early universe. First, we outline various models that explain two essential ingredients of the early universe (dark matter and baryon asymmetry) and those that seek to address current observational anomalies. We then discuss dynamics of the early universe in models of neutrino masses, axions, and several solutions to the electroweak hierarchy problem. The Lyman-$\alpha$ absorption spectrum associated with photons traversing the intergalactic medium allows us to probe the linear matter power spectrum down to relatively small distance scales. Finding ways of accurately evaluating Lyman-$\alpha$ constraints across large classes of candidate models of dark-matter physics is thus of paramount importance. While such constraints have been evaluated for dark-matter models with relatively simple dark-matter velocity distributions, more complex models -- particularly those with dark-matter velocity distributions stretching across multiple scales -- are receiving increasing attention. In this paper, we undertake a study of the Lyman-$\alpha$ constraints associated with general dark-matter velocity distributions. Although these constraints are difficult to evaluate in principle, in practice there exist two ways of recasting them into forms which are easier to evaluate and which therefore allow a more rapid determination of whether a given dark-matter model is ruled in or out. We utilize both of these recasts in order to determine the Lyman-$\alpha$ bounds on different classes of dark-matter velocity distributions. We also develop a general method by which the results of these different recasts can be compared. For relatively simple dark-matter velocity distributions, we find that these two classes of recasts tend to align and give similar results. However, the situation is far more complex for distributions involving multiple velocity scales: while these two recasts continue to yield similar results within certain regions of parameter space, they nevertheless yield dramatically different results within precisely those regions of parameter space which are likely to be phenomenologically relevant. This, then, serves as a cautionary tale regarding the use of such recasts for complex dark-matter velocity distributions., Comment: 21 pages, LaTeX, 12 figures

A self-interacting dark matter halo can experience gravothermal collapse, resulting in a central core with an ultrahigh density. It can further contract and collapse into a black hole, a mechanism proposed to explain the origin of supermassive black holes. We study dynamical instability of the core in general relativity. We use a truncated Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution to model the dark matter distribution and solve the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equation. For given model parameters, we obtain a series of equilibrium configurations and examine their dynamical instability based on considerations of total energy, binding energy, fractional binding energy, and adiabatic index. Our numerical results indicate that the core can collapse into a black hole when the fractional binding energy reaches $0.035$ with a central gravitational redshift of $0.5$. We further show for the instability to occur in the classical regime, the boundary temperature of the core should be at least $10\%$ of the mass of dark matter particles; for a $10^9~{\rm M_\odot}$ seed black hole, the particle mass needs to be larger than a few keV. Self-interacting Dark Matter (SIDM) is a leading candidate proposed to solve discrepancies between predictions of the prevailing cold dark matter theory and observations of galaxies. Many SIDM models predict the existence of a light force carrier that mediate strong dark matter self-interactions. If the mediator couples to the standard model particles, it could produce characteristic signals in dark matter direct detection experiments. We report searches for SIDM models with a light mediator using the full dataset of the PandaX-II experiment, based on a total exposure of 132 tonne-days. No significant excess over background is found, and our likelihood analysis leads to a strong upper limit on the dark matter-nucleon coupling strength. We further combine the PandaX-II constraints and those from observations of the light element abundances in the early universe, and show that direct detection and cosmological probes can provide complementary constraints on dark matter models with a light mediator., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Recently, Meneghetti et al. reported an excess of small-scale gravitational lenses in galaxy clusters. We study its implications for self-interacting dark matter (SIDM), compared with standard cold dark matter (CDM). We design controlled N-body simulations that incorporate observational constraints. The presence of early-type galaxies in cluster substructures can deepen gravitational potential and reduce tidal mass loss. Both scenarios require a relatively high baryon concentration in the substructure to accommodate the lensing measurements, and their tangential caustics are similar. The SIDM substructure can experience gravothermal collapse and produce a steeper density profile than its CDM counterpart, leading to a larger radial galaxy-galaxy strong lensing cross section, although this effect is hard to observe. Self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) naturally gives rise to a cored isothermal density profile, which is favored in observations of many dwarf galaxies. The dark matter distribution in the presence of a central black hole in an isothermal halo develops a density spike with a power law of $r^{-7/4}$, which is shallower than $r^{-7/3}$ as expected for collisionless dark matter (CDM). Thus, indirect detection constraints on dark matter annihilations from the density spike could be relaxed in SIDM. Taking the most dense satellite galaxy of the Milky Way Draco as an example, we derive upper limits on the annihilation cross section and the black hole mass for both SIDM and CDM halos. For the former case, Draco could host an intermediate mass black hole even if dark matter is composed of thermal relics. We further explore the constraints from the Milky Way and M87, which host supermassive black holes, and show the upper limits on the annihilation cross section are significantly weakened in SIDM. Observations show that supermassive black holes (SMBHs) with a mass of $\sim10^9 M_\odot$ exist when the Universe is just $6\%$ of its current age. We propose a scenario where a self-interacting dark matter halo experiences gravothermal instability and its central region collapses into a seed black hole. The presence of baryons in protogalaxies could significantly accelerate the gravothermal evolution of the halo and shorten collapse timescales. The central halo could dissipate its angular momentum remnant via viscosity induced by the self-interactions. The host halo must be on high tails of density fluctuations, implying that high-$z$ SMBHs are expected to be rare in this scenario. We further derive conditions for triggering general relativistic instability of the collapsed region. We perform a series of controlled N-body simulations to study realizations of the recently discovered Antlia 2 galaxy in cold dark matter (CDM) and self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) scenarios. Our simulations contain six benchmark models, where we vary the initial halo concentration and the self-scattering cross section. We adopt well-motivated initial stellar and halo masses, and our fiducial orbit has a small pericenter. After evolving in the Milky Way's tidal field, the simulated galaxies experience significant mass loss and their stellar distributions expand accordingly. These tidal effects are more prominent if the initial halo concentration is lower and if the self-scattering cross section is larger. Our results show that Antlia 2-like galaxies could be realized in CDM if the halo concentration is low and the stellar distribution is diffuse at the infall time, while these conditions could be relaxed in SIDM. We also find all the simulated galaxies predict approximately the same stellar velocity dispersion after imposing selection criteria for stellar particles. Existences of vector-like quarks (VLQs) are predicted in many new physics scenarios beyond the Standard Model (SM). We study the possibility of detecting the vector-like bottom quark (VLQ-$B$) being the $SU(2)$ singlet with electric charge $-1/3$ at the Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC) in a model-independent framework. The decay properties and single production of VLQ-$B$ at the LHeC are explored. Three types of signatures are investigated. By carrying out a fast simulation for the signals and the corresponding backgrounds, the signal significances are obtained. Dark matter can capture in neutron stars from scattering off ultra-relativistic electrons. We present a method to calculate the capture rate on degenerate targets with ultra-relativistic momenta in a compact astronomical object. Our treatment accounts for the target momentum and the Fermi degeneracy of the system. We derive scaling relations for scattering with relativistic targets and confirm consistency with the non-relativistic limit and Lorentz invariance. The potential observation of kinetic heating of neutron stars has a larger discovery reach for dark matter-lepton interactions than conventional terrestrial direct detection experiments. We map this reach onto a set of bosonic and fermionic effective contact interactions between dark matter and leptons as well as nucleons. We show the results for the contact operators up to dimension 6 for spin-0 and spin-1/2 dark matter interactions with relativistic as well as non-relativistic Standard Model fermions. Highlights of this program in the case of vector mediated interactions are presented in a companion letter [1]. Observations of ultra-diffuse galaxies NGC 1052-DF2 and -DF4 show they may contain little dark matter, challenging our understanding of galaxy formation. Using controlled N-body simulations, we explore the possibility that their properties can be reproduced through tidal stripping from the elliptical galaxy NGC 1052, in both cold dark matter (CDM) and self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) scenarios. To explain the dark matter deficiency, we find that a CDM halo must have a very low concentration so that it can lose sufficient inner mass in the tidal field. In contrast, SIDM favors a higher and more reasonable concentration as core formation enhances tidal mass loss. Final stellar distributions in our SIDM benchmarks are more diffuse than the CDM one, and hence the former are in better agreement with the data. We further show that a cored CDM halo model modified by strong baryonic feedback is unlikely to reproduce the observations. Dissipative dark matter self-interactions can affect halo evolution and change its structure. We perform a series of controlled N-body simulations to study impacts of the dissipative interactions on halo properties. The interplay between gravitational contraction and collisional dissipation can significantly speed up the onset of gravothermal collapse, resulting in a steep inner density profile. For reasonable choices of model parameters controlling the dissipation, the collapse timescale can be a factor of 10-100 shorter than that predicted in purely elastic self-interacting dark matter. The effect is maximized when energy loss per collision is comparable to characteristic kinetic energy of dark matter particles in the halo. Dark matter can capture in neutron stars and heat them to observable luminosities. We study relativistic scattering of dark matter on highly degenerate electrons. We develop a Lorentz invariant formalism to calculate the capture probability of dark matter that accounts for the relativistic motion of the target particles and Pauli exclusion principle. We find that the actual capture probability can be five orders of magnitude larger than the one estimated using a nonrelativistic approach. For dark matter masses $10~{\rm eV}\textup{--}10~{\rm PeV}$, neutron star heating complements and can be more sensitive than terrestrial direct detection searches. The projected sensitivity regions exhibit characteristic features that demonstrate a rich interplay between kinematics and Pauli blocking of the DM--electron system. We consider an inelastic dark matter model, where a fermion is charged under a broken U(1) gauge symmetry, and introduce a tiny Majorana mass term to split the fermion into two states with the light one being a dark matter candidate. If the gauge boson is light, it can mediate both elastic and inelastic dark matter self-interactions in dark halos, leading to observational consequences. Using a numerical technique based on partial wave analysis, we accurately calculate the elastic and inelastic self-scattering cross sections. We assume a thermal freeze-out scenario and fix the gauge coupling constant using the relic density constraint. Then, we focus on six benchmark masses of dark matter, covering a wide range from $10~{\rm MeV}$ to $160~{\rm GeV}$ and map parameter regions where the elastic scattering cross section per unit mass is within $1~{\rm cm^2/g} - 5~{\rm cm^2/g}$, favored to solve small-scale issues of cold dark matter. If the heavy state can decay to the light state and a massless species, the inelastic up-scattering process can cool the halo and lead to core collapse. Taking galaxies with evidence of dark matter density cores, we further derive constraints on the parameter space. For dark matter masses below $10~{\rm GeV}$, the mass splitting must be large enough to forbid up scattering in the dwarf halo for evading the core-collapse constraint; while for higher masses, the up-scattering process can still be allowed. We compare proposed solutions to the core vs cusp issue of spiral galaxies, which has also been framed as a diversity problem, and demonstrate that the cuspiness of dark matter halos is correlated with the stellar surface brightness. We compare the rotation curve fits to the SPARC sample from a self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) model, which self-consistently includes the impact of baryons on the halo profile, and hydrodynamical N-body simulations with cold dark matter (CDM). The SIDM model predicts a strong correlation between the core size and the stellar surface density, and it provides the best global fit to the data. The CDM simulations without strong baryonic feedback effects fail to explain the large dark matter cores seen in low surface brightness galaxies. On the other hand, with strong feedback, CDM simulations do not produce galaxy analogs with high stellar and dark matter densities, and therefore they have trouble in explaining the rotation curves of high surface brightness galaxies. This implies that current feedback implementations need to be modified. We also explicitly show how the concentration-mass and stellar-to-halo mass relations together lead to a radial acceleration relation (RAR) in an averaged sense, and reiterate the point that the RAR does not capture the diversity of galaxy rotation curves in the inner regions. We study evolution of self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) subhalos in the Milky Way (MW) tidal field. The interaction between the subhalos and the MW's tides lead to more diverse dark matter distribution in the inner region, compared to their cold dark matter counterparts. We test this scenario with two MW satellite galaxies, Draco and Fornax, opposite extremes in the inner dark matter content, and find that they can be accommodated within the SIDM model proposed to explain the diverse rotation curves of spiral galaxies in the field., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. We point out an anti-correlation between the central dark matter (DM) densities of the bright Milky Way dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) and their orbital pericenter distances inferred from Gaia data. The dSphs that have not come close to the Milky Way center (like Fornax, Carina and Sextans) are less dense in DM than those that have come closer (like Draco and Ursa Minor). The same anti-correlation cannot be inferred for the ultra-faint dSphs due to large scatter. Including ultra-faints, a trend that dSphs with more extended stellar distributions tend to have lower DM densities emerges. We use the Iocco et al. (2015) compilation of 2,780 circular velocity measurements to analyze the Milky Way rotation curve. We find that the error bars for individual measurements are non-gaussian, and hence instead derive median statistics binned central circular velocity values and error bars from these data. We use these median statistics central values and error bars to fit the data to simple, few parameter, rotation curve functions. These simple functions are unable to adequately capture the significant small scale spatial structure in these data and so provide poor fits. We introduce and use the Gaussian Processes (GP) method to capture this small scale structure and use it to derive Milky Way rotation curves from the binned median statistics circular velocity data. The GP method rotation curves have significant small-scale spatial structure superimposed on a broad rise to galactocentric radius $R\approx7$ kpc and a decline at larger $R$. We use the GP method median statistics rotation curve to measure the Oort $A$ and $B$ constants and other characteristic rotation curve quantities. We study correlations in the residual circular velocities (relative to the GP method rotation curve). Along with other evidence for azimuthal asymmetry of the Milky Way circular rotation velocity field, we find that larger residual circular velocities seem to favor parts of spiral arms., Comment: 37 pages, 32 figures. Astrophysical and cosmological observations currently provide the only robust, empirical measurements of dark matter. Future observations with Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will provide necessary guidance for the experimental dark matter program. This white paper represents a community effort to summarize the science case for studying the fundamental physics of dark matter with LSST. We discuss how LSST will inform our understanding of the fundamental properties of dark matter, such as particle mass, self-interaction strength, non-gravitational couplings to the Standard Model, and compact object abundances. Additionally, we discuss the ways that LSST will complement other experiments to strengthen our understanding of the fundamental characteristics of dark matter. We study self-interacting dark matter signatures at the Large Hadron Collider. A light dark photon, mediating dark matter self-interactions, can bind dark matter particles to form a bound state when they are produced via a heavy pseduoscalar in $pp$ collisions. The bound state can further annihilate into a pair of boosted dark photons, which subsequently decay into charged leptons through a kinetic mixing portal, resulting in striking displaced lepton jet signals. After adapting the analysis used in the ATLAS experiment, we explore the reach of the model parameters at the $13~{\rm TeV}$ run with an integrated luminosity of $300~{\rm fb^{-1}}$. For heavy dark matter, the displaced lepton jet searches can surpass traditional monojet signals in setting the lower bound on the pseduoscalar mass. If a positive signal is detected, we can probe the dark matter mass and the dark coupling constant after combining both the displaced lepton jet and monojet searches. We further show the CMS dimuon search can be sensitive to the final state radiation of the dark photon. Surveying dark matter deficient galaxies (those with dark matter mass to stellar mass ratio $M_{\rm dm}/M_{\rm star}<1$) in the Illustris simulation of structure formation in the flat-$\Lambda$CDM cosmogony, we find $M_{\rm star} \approx 2 \times 10^8\, M_\sun$ galaxies that have properties similar to those ascribed by \citet{vanDokkumetal2018a} to the ultra-diffuse galaxy NGC1052-DF2. The Illustris simulation also contains more luminous dark matter deficient galaxies. Illustris galaxy subhalo 476171 is a particularly interesting outlier, a massive and very compact galaxy with $M_{\rm star} \approx 9 \times 10^{10}\, M_\sun$ and $M_{\rm dm}/M_{\rm star} \approx 0.1$ and a half-stellar-mass radius of $\approx 2$ kpc. If the Illustris simulation and the $\Lambda$CDM model are accurate, there are a significant number of dark matter deficient galaxies, including massive luminous compact ones. It will be interesting to observationally discover these galaxies, and to also more clearly understand how they formed, as they are likely to provide new insight into and constraints on models of structure formation and the nature of dark matter., Comment: submitted

We study the gravothermal evolution of dark matter halos in the presence of dissipative dark matter self-interactions. Dissipative interactions are present in many particle-physics realizations of the dark-sector paradigm and can significantly accelerate the gravothermal collapse of halos compared to purely elastic dark matter self-interactions. This is the case even when the dissipative interaction timescale is longer than the free-fall time of the halo. Using a semianalytical fluid model calibrated with isolated and cosmological $N$-body simulations, we calculate the evolution of the halo properties -- including its density profile and velocity dispersion profile -- as well as the core-collapse time as a function of the particle model parameters that describe the interactions. A key property is that the inner density profile at late times becomes cuspy again. Using 18 dwarf galaxies that exhibit a corelike dark matter density profile, we derive constraints on the strength of the dissipative interactions and the energy loss per collision., Comment: v2 as published in PRL

Galactic rotation curves exhibit diverse behavior in the inner regions, while obeying an organizing principle, i.e., they can be approximately described by a radial acceleration relation or the Modified Newtonian Dynamics phenomenology. We analyze the rotation curve data from the SPARC sample, and explicitly demonstrate that both the diversity and uniformity are naturally reproduced in a hierarchical structure formation model with the addition of dark matter self-interactions. The required concentrations of the dark matter halos are fully consistent with the concentration-mass relation predicted by the Planck cosmological model. The inferred stellar mass-to-light ($3.6 \mu m$) ratios scatter around $0.5 M_\odot/L_\odot$, as expected from population synthesis models, leading to a tight radial acceleration relation and baryonic Tully-Fisher relation. The inferred stellar-halo mass relation is consistent with the expectations from abundance matching. We construct a self-interacting dark matter model that could simultaneously explain the observed muon anomalous magnetic moment. It is based on a gauged U$(1)_{L_{\mu} - L_{\tau}}$ extension of the standard model, where we introduce a vector-like pair of fermions as the dark matter candidate and a new Higgs boson to break the symmetry. The new gauge boson has a sizable contribution to muon $(g-2)$, while being consistent with other experimental constraints. The U$(1)_{L_{\mu} - L_{\tau}}$ Higgs boson acts as a light force carrier, mediating dark matter self-interactions with a velocity-dependent cross section. It is large enough in galaxies to thermalize the inner halo and explain the diverse rotation curves and diminishes towards galaxy clusters. Since the light mediator dominantly decays to the U$(1)_{L_{\mu} - L_{\tau}}$ gauge boson and neutrinos, the astrophysical and cosmological constraints are weak. We search for nuclear recoil signals of dark matter models with a light mediator in PandaX-II, a direct detection experiment in China Jinping underground Laboratory. Using data collected in 2016 and 2017 runs, corresponding to a total exposure of 54 ton day, we set upper limits on the zero-momentum dark matter-nucleon cross section. These limits have a strong dependence on the mediator mass when it is comparable to or below the typical momentum transfer. We apply our results to constrain self-interacting dark matter models with a light mediator mixing with standard model particles, and set strong limits on the model parameter space for the dark matter mass ranging from $5~{\rm GeV}$ to $10~{\rm TeV}$., Comment: Version accepted by PRL, new figures (Fig.2 ) added

Dwarf spheroidal galaxies provide well-known challenges to the standard cold and collisionless dark matter scenario: The too-big-to-fail problem, namely the mismatch between the observed mass enclosed within the half-light radius of dwarf spheroidals and cold dark matter N-body predictions; The hints for inner constant-density cores. While these controversies may be alleviated by baryonic physics and environmental effects, revisiting the standard lore of cold and collisionless dark matter remains an intriguing possibility. Self-interacting dark matter may be the successful proposal to such a small-scale crisis. Self-interactions correlate dark matter and baryon distributions, allowing for constant-density cores in low surface brightness galaxies. Here we report the first data-driven study of the too-big-to-fail of Milky Way dwarf spheroidals within the self-interacting dark matter paradigm. We find good description of stellar kinematics and compatibility with the concentration-mass relation from recent pure cold dark matter simulations. We consider a self-interacting dark matter model in which the massive dark photon mediating the self-interaction decays to light dark fermions to avoid over-closing the universe. We find that if the model is constrained to explain the dark matter halos inferred for spiral galaxies and galaxy clusters simultaneously, there is a strong indication that dark matter is produced asymmetrically in the early universe. It also implies the presence of dark radiation, late kinetic decoupling for dark matter, and a suppressed linear power spectrum due to dark acoustic damping. The Lyman-$\alpha$ forest power spectrum measurements put a strong upper limit on the damping scale and the model has little room to reduce the abundances of satellite galaxies. Future observations in the matter power spectrum and the CMB, in tandem with the impact of self-interactions in galactic halos, makes it possible to measure the gauge coupling and masses of the dark sector particles even when signals in conventional dark matter searches are absent., Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures, published version in PLB

Neutron stars capture dark matter efficiently. The kinetic energy transferred during capture heats old neutron stars in the local galactic halo to temperatures detectable by upcoming infrared telescopes. We derive the sensitivity of this probe in the framework of effective operators. For dark matter heavier than a GeV, we find that neutron star heating can set limits on the effective operator cutoff that are orders of magnitude stronger than possible from terrestrial direct detection experiments in the case of spin-dependent and velocity-suppressed scattering., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

We review theories of dark matter (DM) beyond the collisionless paradigm, known as self-interacting dark matter (SIDM), and their observable implications for astrophysical structure in the Universe. Self-interactions are motivated, in part, due to the potential to explain long-standing (and more recent) small scale structure observations that are in tension with collisionless cold DM (CDM) predictions. Simple particle physics models for SIDM can provide a universal explanation for these observations across a wide range of mass scales spanning dwarf galaxies, low and high surface brightness spiral galaxies, and clusters of galaxies. At the same time, SIDM leaves intact the success of $\Lambda$CDM cosmology on large scales. This report covers the following topics: (1) small scale structure issues, including the core-cusp problem, the diversity problem for rotation curves, the missing satellites problem, and the too-big-to-fail problem, as well as recent progress in hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation; (2) N-body simulations for SIDM, including implications for density profiles, halo shapes, substructure, and the interplay between baryons and self-interactions; (3) semi-analytic Jeans-based methods that provide a complementary approach for connecting particle models with observations; (4) merging systems, such as cluster mergers (e.g., the Bullet Cluster) and minor infalls, along with recent simulation results for mergers; (5) particle physics models, including light mediator models and composite DM models; and (6) complementary probes for SIDM, including indirect and direct detection experiments, particle collider searches, and cosmological observations.
