Search

The PANDAX-4T and XENONnT experiments present indications of Coherent Elastic Neutrino Nucleus Scattering (CE$\nu$NS) from ${}^{8}$B solar neutrinos at 2.6$\sigma$ and 2.7$\sigma$, respectively. This constitutes the first observation of the neutrino "floor" or "fog", an irreducible background that future dark matter searches in terrestrial detectors will have to contend with. Here, we first discuss the contributions from neutrino-electron scattering and from the Migdal effect in the region of interest of these experiments, and we argue that they are non-negligible. Second, we make use of the recent PANDAX-4T and XENONnT data to derive novel constraints on light scalar and vector mediators coupling to neutrinos and quarks. We demonstrate that these experiments already provide world-leading laboratory constraints on new light mediators in some regions of parameter space., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

New gauge bosons coupled to heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) are simple and well-motivated extensions of the Standard Model. In searches for HNLs in proton fixed-target experiments, we find that a large population of gauge bosons ($Z^\prime$) produced by proton bremsstrahlung may decay to HNLs, leading to a significant improvement in existing bounds on the ($m_{HNL}, U_{\alpha}$), where $U_\alpha$ represent the mixing between HNL and the active neutrinos with flavor $\alpha$. We study this possibility in fixed target experiments with the 8 GeV proton beams, including SBND, MicroBooNE, and ICARUS, as well as DUNE and DarkQuest at 120 GeV. We find the projected sensitivities to additional $Z^\prime$-mediated HNL production can bring the seesaw mechanism of the neutrino masses within a broadened experimental reach., Comment: Corrected mistakes in the calculation of the neutral meson production and detector acceptance and subsequent sensitivity. We present a novel way to probe inelastic dark matter using cosmic-ray (CR) cooling in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Dark matter (DM) in the vicinity of supermassive black holes may scatter off CRs, resulting in the rapid cooling of CRs for sufficiently large cross sections. This in turn can alter the high-energy neutrino and gamma-ray fluxes detected from these sources. We show that AGN cooling bounds obtained through the multimessenger data of NGC 1068 and TXS 0506+056 allow to reach unprecedently large mass splittings for inelastic DM ($\gtrsim$ TeV), orders of magnitude larger than those probed by direct detection experiments and DM capture in neutron stars. Furthermore, we demonstrate that cooling bounds from AGNs can probe thermal light DM with small mass splittings. This provides novel and complementary constraints in parts of a parameter space accessible solely by colliders and beam dump experiments., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. Active and sterile neutrinos may acquire "dark moments" via one-loop diagrams with a massless dark photon and new light particles in the loop. Due to the kinetic mixing between the dark photon and the Standard Model photon, neutrinos would obtain effective electromagnetic moments. This mechanism allows for enhanced electromagnetic moments that can evade constraints on particles directly charged under electromagnetism. We show that in a wide region of parameter space, the model features testable predictions for the anapole and magnetic moment of active and sterile neutrinos with dark matter direct detection experiments sensitive to the solar neutrino flux., Comment: Authorship dispute

BSM electromagnetic properties of neutrinos may lead to copious production of sterile neutrinos in the hot and dense core of a core-collapse supernova. In this work, we focus on the active-sterile transition magnetic moment portal for heavy sterile neutrinos. Firstly, we revisit the SN1987A cooling bounds for dipole portal using the integrated luminosity method, which yields more reliable results (especially in the trapping regime) compared to the previously explored via emissivity loss, aka the Raffelt criterion. Secondly, we obtain strong bounds on the dipole coupling strength reaching as low as $10^{-11} \text{ GeV}^{-1}$ from energy deposition, i.e., constrained from the observation of explosion energies of underluminous Type IIP supernovae. In addition, we find that sterile neutrino production from Primakoff upscattering off of proton dominates over scattering off of electron for low sterile neutrino masses., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

Extragalactic and galactic cosmic rays scatter with the cosmic neutrino background during propagation to Earth, yielding a flux of relic neutrinos boosted to larger energies. If an overdensity of relic neutrinos is present in galaxies, and neutrinos are massive enough, this flux might be detectable by high-energy neutrino experiments. For a lightest neutrino of mass $m_{\nu} \sim 0.1$ eV, we find an upper limit on the local relic neutrino overdensity of $\sim 10^{13}$ and an upper limit on the relic neutrino overdensity at TXS 0506+056 of $\sim 10^{10}$. We search for indirect signals of $\mathscr{O}$(keV) dark matter annihilating or decaying into $\mathscr{O}$(eV) dark photons. These dark photons will be highly boosted and have decay lengths larger than the Milky Way, and can be absorbed by neutrino or dark matter experiments at a rate dependent on the photon-dark photon kinetic mixing parameter and the optical properties of the experiment. We show that current experiments can not probe new parameter space, but future large-scale gaseous detectors with low backgrounds (i.e. CYGNUS, NEXT, PANDAX-III) may be sensitive to this signal when the annihilation cross section is especially large., Comment: 10 pages

Heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) are often among the hypothetical ingredients behind nonzero neutrino masses. If sufficiently light, they can be produced and detected in fixed-target-like experiments. We show that if the HNLs belong to a richer -- but rather generic -- dark sector, their production mechanism can deviate dramatically from expectations associated to the standard-model weak interactions. In more detail, we postulate that the dark sector contains an axion-like particle (ALP) that naturally decays into HNLs. Since ALPs mix with the pseudoscalar hadrons, the HNL flux might be predominantly associated to the production of neutral mesons (e.g., $\pi^0$, $\eta$) as opposed to charge hadrons (e.g., $\pi^\pm$, $K^\pm$). In this case, the physics responsible for HNL production and decay are not directly related and experiments like DUNE might be sensitive to HNLs that are too weakly coupled to the standard model to be produced via weak interactions, as is generically the case of HNLs that play a direct role in the type-I seesaw mechanism., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Sterile neutrinos can be produced through mixing with active neutrinos in the hot and dense core of a core-collapse supernova (SN). The standard bounds on the active-sterile mixing ($\sin^2 \theta$) from SN arise from SN1987A energy-loss, requiring $E_{\text{loss}}<10^{52}~{\rm erg}$. In this letter, we discuss a novel bound on sterile neutrino parameter space arising from the energy deposition through its decays inside the SN envelope. Using the observed underluminous SN IIP population, this energy deposition is constrained to be below $\sim 10^{50}~{\rm erg}$. Focusing on sterile neutrino mixing only with the tau neutrino, for heavy sterile masses $m_s$ in the range $100$-$500$ MeV, we find stringent constraints on $\sin^2 \theta_\tau$ reaching two orders of magnitude lower than those from the SN1987A energy-loss argument. Beam dumps and fixed-target experiments have been very sensitive probes of such particles and other physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM) by considering the production of new states from the primary interaction in the beam dump. In a proton beam dump, there are many secondary interactions taking place in electromagnetic showers which may be additional production channels for pseudoscalar bosons or axion-like particles (ALPs). The target-less configuration of the MiniBooNE experiment, which collected data from $1.86 \times 10^{20}$ protons impinging directly on the steel beam dump, is an excellent test of sensitivity to these production channels of ALPs in the MeV mass region. Using the null observation of the MiniBooNE dump mode data, we set new constraints on ALPs coupling to electrons and photons produced through a multitude of channels and detected via both scattering and decays in the MiniBooNE detector volume. We find that the null result rules out parameter space that was previously unconstrained by laboratory probes in the 10-100 MeV mass regime for both electron and photon couplings. Lastly, we make the case for performing a dedicated analysis with 1.25$\times 10^{20}$ POT of data collected by the ArgoNeuT experiment, which we show to have complementary sensitivity and set the stage for future searches., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures; updated references

The nuclear reaction network within the interior of the Sun is an efficient MeV physics factory, and can produce long-lived particles generic to dark sector models. In this work we consider the sensitivity of satellite instruments, primarily the RHESSI Spectrometer, that observe the Quiet Sun in the MeV regime where backgrounds are low. We find that Quiet Sun observations offer a powerful and complementary probe in regions of parameter space where the long-lived particle decay length is longer than the radius of the Sun, and shorter than the distance between the Sun and Earth. In this work we demonstrate that a future accelerator-based neutrino experiment such as DUNE can greatly increase its sensitivity to a variety of new physics scenarios by operating in a mode where the proton beam impinges on a beam dump. We consider two new physics scenarios, namely light dark matter (LDM) and axion-like particles (ALPs) and show that by utilizing a dump mode at a DUNE-like experiment, unexplored new regions of parameter space can be probed with an exposure of only 3 months with half of its expected initial beam power. Specifically, target-less configuration of future high intensity neutrino experiments will probe the parameter space for thermal relic DM as well as the QCD axion (DFSZ and KSVZ). The strength of such configuration in the context of new physics searches stems from the fact that the neutrino flux is significantly reduced compared to that of the target, resulting in much smaller backgrounds from neutrino interactions. We consider the upscattering of atmospheric neutrinos in the interior of the Earth producing heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) which subsequently decay inside large volume detectors (e.g. Super-Kamiokande or DUNE). We compute the flux of upscattered HNLs arriving at a detector, and the resultant event rate of visible decay products. Using Super-Kamiokande's atmospheric neutrino dataset we find new leading constraints for dipole couplings to any flavor with HNL masses between roughly 10 MeV and 100 MeV. For mass mixing with tau neutrinos, we probe new parameter space near HNL masses of $\sim 20$ MeV with prospects for substantial future improvements. Light sub-GeV dark matter (DM) constitutes an underexplored target, beyond the optimized sensitivity of typical direct DM detection experiments. We comprehensively investigate hadrophilic light DM produced from cosmic-ray collisions with the atmosphere. The resulting relativistic DM, originating from meson decays, can be efficiently observed in variety of experiments, such as XENON1T. We include for the first time decays of $\eta$, $\eta^{\prime}$ and $K^+$ mesons, leading to improved limits for DM masses above few hundred MeV. We incorporate an exact treatment of the DM attenuation in Earth and demonstrate that nuclear form factor effects can significantly impact the resulting testable DM parameter space. The existence of non-zero neutrino masses points to the likely existence of multiple SM neutral fermions. When such states are heavy enough that they cannot be produced in oscillations, they are referred to as Heavy Neutral Leptons (HNLs). In this white paper we discuss the present experimental status of HNLs including colliders, beta decay, accelerators, as well as astrophysical and cosmological impacts. Neutrinos are the Standard Model (SM) particles which we understand the least, often due to how weakly they interact with the other SM particles. Beyond this, very little is known about interactions among the neutrinos, i.e., their self-interactions. The SM predicts neutrino self-interactions at a level beyond any current experimental capabilities, leaving open the possibility for beyond-the-SM interactions across many energy scales. In this white paper, we review the current knowledge of neutrino self-interactions from a vast array of probes, from cosmology, to astrophysics, to the laboratory. We also discuss theoretical motivations for such self-interactions, including neutrino masses and possible connections to dark matter. We study future DUNE sensitivity to various electromagnetic couplings of neutrinos, including magnetic moments, milli-charges, and charge radii. The DUNE PRISM capabilities play a crucial role in constraining the electron flavored couplings. We find that DUNE will be able to place the strongest terrestrial constraint on the muon-neutrino magnetic moment by improving on LSND's bounds by roughly a factor of two, although Borexino's solar constraint will still be stronger. For the muon neutrino milli-charge DUNE can place the leading experimental bound, with two orders of magnitude improvement compared to the existing COHERENT constraint. Finally, DUNE may be able to test the SM prediction for the muon neutrino charge radius, by placing a constraint two times better than CHARM-II and CCFR experiments., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, 1 table

New gauge bosons coupling to leptons are simple and well-motivated extensions of the Standard Model. We study the sensitivity to gauged $L_{\mu} -L_{e}$, $L_e-L_\tau$ and $L_{\mu} -L_{\tau}$ both with the existing beam dump mode data of MiniBooNE and with the DUNE near detector. We find that including bremsstrahlung and resonant production of $Z'$ which decays to $e^{\pm}$ and $\mu^{\pm}$ final states leads to a significant improvement in existing bounds, especially for $L_\mu-L_e$ and $L_e-L_\tau$ for DUNE while competitive constraints can be achieved with the existing data from the MiniBooNE's beam dump run., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Light non-relativistic components of the galactic dark matter halo elude direct detection constraints because they lack the kinetic energy to create an observable recoil. However, cosmic-rays can upscatter dark matter to significant energies, giving direct detection experiments access to previously unreachable regions of parameter-space at very low dark matter mass. In this work we extend the cosmic-ray dark matter formalism to models of inelastic dark matter and show that previously inaccessible regions of the mass-splitting parameter space can be probed. Conventional direct detection of non-relativistic halo dark matter is limited to mass splittings of $\delta\sim10~\mathrm{keV}$ and is highly mass dependent. We find that including the effect of cosmic-ray upscattering can extend the reach to mass splittings of $\delta\sim100~\mathrm{MeV}$ and maintain that reach at much lower dark matter mass., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

A variety of new physics scenarios allow for neutrinos to up-scatter into a heavy neutral lepton state. For a range of couplings and neutrino energies, the heavy neutrino may travel some distance before decaying to visible final states. When both the up-scattering and decay occur within the detector volume, these "double bang" events produce distinctive phenomenology with very low background. In this work, we first consider the current sensitivity at Super-Kamiokande via the atmospheric neutrino flux, and find current data may already provide new constraints. Dark sectors with Abelian gauge symmetries can interact with ordinary matter via kinetic mixing. In such scenarios, magnetic monopoles of a broken dark $U(1)$ will appear in our sector as confined milli-magnetically charged objects under ordinary electromagnetism. Halo ellipticity constraints are shown to significantly bound the strength of dark magnetic Coulomb monopole interactions. The bound monopole ground state, which in vacuum is stable and has no magnetic charge or moment, is shown to become quantum mechanically unstable in the presence of an external, ordinary magnetic field. If these states contribute sizably to the local dark matter density, they can extract significant energy from the galactic magnetic field if their decay occurs on a galactic timescale or less. We revise and extend this "Parker Bound" on galactic magnetic energy loss to milli-monopoles which leads to the strongest existing constraints on these states, satisfying our halo ellipticity bounds, over a wide range of monopole masses., Comment: 33 pages + appendices, 4 figures

In light of the recent Muon $g-2$ experiment data from Fermilab, we investigate the implications of a gauged $L_{\mu} - L_{\tau}$ model for high energy neutrino telescopes. It has been suggested that a new gauge boson at the MeV scale can both account for the Muon $g-2$ data and alleviate the tension in the Hubble parameter measurements. It also strikes signals at IceCube from the predicted resonance scattering between high-energy neutrinos and the cosmic neutrino background. We revisit this model based on the latest IceCube shower data, and perform a four-parameter fit to find a preferred region. We do not find evidence for secret interactions. The best-fit points of $m_{Z'}$ and $g_{\mu\tau}$ are $\sim10$~MeV and $\sim0.1$, respectively, depending on assumptions regarding the absolute neutrino masses, and the secret interaction parameter space allowed by the observed IceCube data overlaps with the regions of the parameter space that can explain the muon $g-2$ anomaly and Hubble tension as well. We demonstrate that future neutrino telescopes such as IceCube-Gen2 can probe this unique parameter space, and point out that successful measurements would infer the neutrino mass with $0.06~{\rm eV}\lesssim \Sigma m_\nu\lesssim 0.3~{\rm eV}$., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, based on the version published at PRD

We study future coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE$\nu$NS) modifications from a variety of possible models at the Coherent CAPTAIN Mills (CCM) experiment at Los Alamos. We show that large regions of Non-Standard Neutrino Interaction (NSI) parameter space will be excluded rapidly, and that stringent new bounds on the gauge coupling in $Z'$ models will also be placed. As a result, CCM will be able to rule out LMA-D solutions for a large class of models with MeV-scale mediators., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

Dark Matter (DM) may be comprised of axion-like particles (ALPs) with couplings to photons and the standard model fermions. In this paper we study photon signals arising from cosmic ray (CR) electron scattering on background ALPs. For a range of masses we find that these bounds can place competitive new constraints on the ALP-electron coupling, although in many models lifetime constraints may supersede these bounds. Axion-like particles (ALPs) provide a promising direction in the search for new physics, while a wide range of models incorporate ALPs. We point out that future neutrino experiments, such as DUNE, possess competitive sensitivity to ALP signals. The high-intensity proton beam impinging on a target can not only produce copious amounts of neutrinos, but also cascade photons that are created from charged particle showers stopping in the target. Therefore, ALPs interacting with photons can be produced (often energetically) with high intensity via the Primakoff effect and then leave their signatures at the near detector through the inverse Primakoff scattering or decays to a photon pair. Moreover, the high-capability near detectors allow for discrimination between ALP signals and potential backgrounds, improving the signal sensitivity further. We demonstrate that a DUNE-like detector can explore a wide range of parameter space in ALP-photon coupling $g_{a\gamma}$ vs ALP mass $m_a$, including some regions unconstrained by existing bounds; the "cosmological triangle" will be fully explored and the sensitivity limits would reach up to $m_a\sim3-4$ GeV and down to $g_{a\gamma}\sim 10^{-8} {\rm GeV}^{-1}$., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, Journal published version

Non-relativistic Dark Matter (DM) can be accelerated by scattering on high-energy cosmic-ray (CR) electrons. This process leads to a sub-population of relativistic or semi-relativistic DM which extends the experimental reach for direct detection in the sub-GeV mass regime. In this paper we examine the current and future potential of this mechanism for constraining models of light dark matter. In particular, we find that Super-Kamiokande and XENON1T data can already provide leading constraints on the flux of dark matter that has been accelerated to high energies from cosmic ray electrons. We also examine future projected sensitivities for DUNE and Hyper-K, and contrary to previous findings, conclude that DUNE will be able supersede Super-K bounds on cosmic-ray upscattered DM for a variety of DM models., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures

In this short letter, we find that a magnetic transition dipole moment between tau and sterile neutrinos can account for the XENON1T excess events. Unlike the ordinary neutrino dipole moment, the introduction of the new sterile mass scale allows for astrophysical bounds to be suppressed. Interestingly, the best-fit regions that are compatible with the SN1987A imply either boron-8 or CNO neutrinos as the source flux. We find that sterile neutrinos of either $\sim$ 260 keV or in the $\sim$(500 - 800) keV mass range are capable of evading astrophysical constraints while being able to successfully explain the XENON1T event rate. The sterile neutrino in the best fit parameter space may have significant effects on big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). We study a Dark Matter (DM) model in which the dominant coupling to the standard model occurs through a neutrino-DM-scalar coupling. The new singlet scalar will generically have couplings to nuclei/electrons arising from renormalizable Higgs portal interactions. As a result the DM particle $X$ can convert into a neutrino via scattering on a target nucleus $\mathcal{N}$: $ X + \mathcal{N} \rightarrow \nu + \mathcal{N}$, leading to striking signatures at direct detection experiments. Similarly, DM can be produced in neutrino scattering events at neutrino experiments: $ \nu + \mathcal{N} \rightarrow X + \mathcal{N}$, predicting spectral distortions at experiments such as COHERENT. Furthermore, the model allows for late kinetic decoupling of dark matter with implications for small-scale structure. At low masses, we find that COHERENT and late kinetic decoupling produce the strongest constraints on the model, while at high masses the leading constraints come from DM down-scattering at XENON1T and Borexino. Quark nuggets are a candidate for dark matter consistent with the Standard Model. Previous models of quark nuggets have investigated properties arising from their being composed of strange, up, and down quarks and have not included any effects caused by their self-magnetic field. However, Tatsumi found that the core of a magnetar star may be a quark nugget in a ferromagnetic state with core magnetic field B between $10^{ 11}$ T and $10^{ 13}$ T. We apply Tatsumi$'$s result to quark-nugget dark-matter and report results on aggregation of magnetized quark nuggets (MQNs) after formation from the quark-gluon plasma until expansion of the universe freezes out the mass distribution to include $10^{ -24}$ kg to $10^{ 14}$ kg. Aggregation overcomes weak-interaction decay. Computed mass distributions show MQNs are consistent with requirements for dark matter and indicate that geologic detectors (craters in peat bogs) and space-based detectors (satellites measuring radio-frequency emissions after passage through normal matter) should be able to detect MQN dark matter. Heavy neutral leptons are predicted in many extensions of the Standard Model with massive neutrinos. If kinematically accessible, they can be copiously produced from kaon and pion decays in atmospheric showers, and subsequently decay inside large neutrino detectors. We perform a search for these long-lived particles using Super-Kamiokande multi-GeV neutrino data and derive stringent limits on the mixing with electron, muon and tau neutrinos as a function of the long-lived particle mass. We find that the energy dependence in the scattering cross section is significant, and produces stronger bounds than previously found (which assumed constant cross sections) by many orders of magnitude at low DM mass. Finally, we compute the "neutrino-floor" that will limit future direct detection searches for cosmic ray-upscattered dark matter. While we focus on vector interactions for illustration, we emphasize that the energy dependence is critical in determining accurate bounds on any particle physics model of Dark Matter-CR interactions from experimental data on this scenario., Comment: 4+2 pages, 3 figures

This report summarizes the present status of neutrino non-standard interactions (NSI). After a brief overview, several aspects of NSIs are discussed, including connection to neutrino mass models, model-building and phenomenology of large NSI with both light and heavy mediators, NSI phenomenology in both short- and long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments, neutrino cross-sections, complementarity of NSI with other low- and high-energy experiments, fits with neutrino oscillation and scattering data, DUNE sensitivity to NSI, effective field theory of NSI, as well as the relevance of NSI to dark matter and cosmology. We also discuss the open questions and interesting future directions that can be pursued by the community at large. The ANITA balloon experiment was designed to detect radio signals initiated by neutrinos and cosmic ray air showers. These signals are typically discriminated by the polarization and phase inversions of the radio signal. The reflected signal from cosmic rays suffer phase inversion compared to a direct tau neutrino event. In this paper we study sub-surface reflection, which can occur without phase inversion, in the context of the two anomalous up-going events reported by ANITA. We find that subsurface layers and firn density inversions may plausibly account for the events, while ice fabric layers and wind ablation crusts could also play a role. This hypothesis can be tested with radar surveying of the Antarctic region in the vicinity of the anomalous ANITA events. Future experiments should not use phase inversion as a sole criterion to discriminate between downgoing and upgoing events, unless the subsurface reflection properties are well understood., Comment: 4+2 pages, 3 figures

The detection of the high-energy neutrino event, IceCube-170922A, demonstrated that multimessenger particle astrophysics triggered by neutrino alerts is feasible. We consider time delay signatures caused by secret neutrino interactions with the cosmic neutrino background and dark matter and suggest that these can be used as a novel probe of neutrino interactions beyond the Standard Model (BSM). The tests with BSM-induced neutrino echoes are distinct from existing constraints from the spectral modification and will be enabled by multimessenger observations of bright neutrino transients with future experiments such as IceCube-Gen2, KM3Net, and Hyper-Kamiokande. Heavy sterile neutrinos are typically invoked to accommodate the observed neutrino masses, by positing a new Yukawa term connecting these new states to the neutrinos in the electroweak doublet. However, given our ignorance of the neutrino sector we should explore additional interactions such sterile neutrinos may have with the SM. In this paper, we study the dimension-5 operator which couples the heavy state to a light neutrino and the photon. We find that the recent XENON1T direct detection data can improve the limits on this "Neutrino Dipole Portal" by up to an order of magnitude over previous bounds. Future direct detection experiments may be able to extend these bounds down to the level probed by SN1987A., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Non-Standard Interactions (NSI) of neutrinos with matter has received renewed interest in recent years. In particular, it has been shown that NSI can reconcile the $3+1$ solution with IceCube atmospheric data with $E_\nu >500$ GeV, provided that the effective coupling of NSI is large, e.g. $\sim 6 G_F$. The main goal of the present paper is to show that contrary to intuition, it is possible to build viable models with large NSI by invoking a new $U(1)$ gauge symmetry with gauge boson of mass $\sim 10$ eV. We refer to these new constructions as $3+1+ U(1)$ models. In the framework of a $3+1$ solution to LSND and MiniBooNE anomalies, we show that this novel NSI can help to solve the tension with cosmological bounds and constraints from IceCube atmospheric data with $E_\nu>500$ GeV. We then discuss the implications of the MINOS and MINOS+ results for the 3+1+$U(1)$ scenario., Comment: 24 pages, 5 figures

We examine scenarios in which a dark sector (dark matter, dark radiation, or dark energy) couples to the active neutrinos. For light and weakly-coupled exotic sectors we find that scalar, vector, or tensor dark backgrounds may appreciably impact neutrino propagation while remaining practically invisible to all other phenomenological probes. The dark medium may induce small departures from the Standard Model predictions or even offer an alternative explanation of neutrino oscillations. While the propagation of neutrinos is affected in all experiments, atmospheric data currently represent the most promising probe of the new physics scale. We quantify the future sensitivity of the ORCA detector of KM3NeT and the IceCube experiment and find that all exotic effects can be constrained at the level of a few percent of the Earth matter potential, with couplings mediating $\mu$-neutrino transitions being most constrained. Long baseline experiments like DUNE may provide additional complementary information on the scale of the dark sector., Comment: 28 pages, 4 figures

In the presence of neutrino Non-Standard Interactions (NSI) with matter, the derivation of neutrino parameters from oscillation data must be reconsidered. In particular, along with the standard solution to neutrino oscillation, another solution known as "LMA--Dark" is compatible with global oscillation data and requires both $\theta_{12}>\pi/4$ and a certain flavor pattern of NSI with an effective coupling comparable to $G_F$. Contrary to conventional expectations, there is a class of models based on a new $U(1)_X$ gauge symmetry with a gauge boson of mass of few MeV to few 10 MeV that can viably give rise to such large NSI. These models can in principle be tested by Coherent Elastic $\nu$-Nucleus Scattering (CE$\nu$NS) experiments such as COHERENT and the upcoming reactor neutrino experiment, CONUS. We analyze how the recent results from the COHERENT experiment constrain these models and forecast the discovery potential with future measurements from COHERENT and CONUS. We study the discovery reach of future Dark Matter (DM) Direct Detection experiments using DM-electron scattering in the presence of the solar neutrino background. At these low energies traditional methods for nuclear and electronic recoil discrimination fail, implying that the neutrino-{\it nucleus} scattering background can be sizable. We calculate discovery limits based on ionization values of signal and background, and quantify the dependence on the ionization model. Moreover, we explore how the dependence of the DM cross section discovery limits vary with exposure, electronic/nuclear recoil discrimination, DM form factors, and DM astrophysical uncertainties., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

The ANITA balloon experiment has recently observed several ~EeV cascade events at an angle below the horizon that renders any Standard Model (SM) interpretation unlikely as the Earth is significantly opaque to all SM particles at such energies. In this paper, we study a sterile neutrino interpretation of these events, calculating the angular acceptance of cascades and the relative sensitivities of several experiments to a cascade initiated by an EeV sterile neutrino. We find that ANITA is uniquely sensitive to this type of upward directed cascade signal over a wide portion of the sky and from the direction of the two observed events has a transient acceptance roughly equivalent to that of the IceCube experiment., Comment: 5 pages and 4 figures. Dark matter may reside in sector without Standard Model (SM) gauge interactions. One way in which such a dark sector can still impact SM particles through non-gravitational interactions is via the "photon portal" in which a dark photon kinetically mixes with the ordinary SM photon. We study the implications of this setup for electron recoil events at TEXONO reactor and nuclear recoil events at the COHERENT experiment. We find that the recent COHERENT data rules out previously allowed regions of parameter space favored by the thermal relic hypothesis for the DM abundance. When mapped onto the DM-electron cross section, we find that COHERENT provides the leading direct constraints for DM masses < 30 MeV., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, extended study for both fermionic and scalar DM; to appear in JHEP

The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) has recently discovered gravitational waves (GWs) from its first neutron star-neutron star merger at a distance of $\sim 40$~Mpc from the Earth. The associated electromagnetic (EM) detection of the event, including the short gamma-ray burst within $\Delta t \sim 2$~s after the GW arrival, can be used to test various aspects of sources physics and GW propagation. Using GW170817 as the first GW-EM example, we show that this event provides a stringent direct test that GWs travel at the speed of light. The gravitational potential of the Milky Way provides a potential source of Shapiro time delay difference between the arrival of photons and GWs, and we demonstrate that the nearly coincident detection of the GW and EM signals can yield strong limits on anomalous gravitational time delay, through updating the previous limits taking into account details of Milky Way's gravitational potential. Finally, we also obtain an intriguing limit on the size of the prompt emission region of GRB 170817A, and discuss implications for the emission mechanism of short gamma-ray bursts., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure; PRD version

A variety of new physics models allows for neutrinos to up-scatter into heavier states. If the incident neutrino is energetic enough, the heavy neutrino may travel some distance before decaying. In this work, we consider the atmospheric neutrino flux as a source of such events. At IceCube, this would lead to a "double-bang" (DB) event topology, similar to what is predicted to occur for tau neutrinos at ultra-high energies. The DB event topology has an extremely low background rate from coincident atmospheric cascades, making this a distinctive signature of new physics. Our results indicate that IceCube should already be able to derive new competitive constraints on models with GeV-scale sterile neutrinos using existing data., Comment: 4 + 2 pages, 3 figures

We study the sensitivity of the stopped pion source of neutrinos at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory to neutrino non-standard interactions (NSI). In particular, we find that simple event counting above threshold can improve constraints on NSI for electron- and muon- flavored NSI, with the strongest constraints arising for flavor-diagonal NSI coupling to $\mu$ neutrinos. However, if the detector resolution is sufficient to all for even a coarse spectral study of events, COHERENT will also be sensitive to the mass scale of NSI. Sterile neutrinos at the eV scale have long been studied in the context of anomalies in short baseline neutrino experiments. Their cosmology can be made compatible with our understanding of the early Universe provided the sterile neutrino sector enjoys a nontrivial dynamics with exotic interactions, possibly providing a link to the Dark Matter (DM) puzzle. Interactions between DM and neutrinos have also been proposed to address the long-standing "missing satellites" problem in the field of large scale structure formation. Motivated by these considerations, in this paper we discuss realistic scenarios with light steriles coupled to DM. We point out that within this framework active neutrinos acquire an effective coupling to DM that manifests itself as a new matter potential in the propagation within a medium of asymmetric DM. Assuming that at least a small fraction of asymmetric DM has been captured by the Sun, we show that a sizable region of the parameter space of these scenarios can be probed by solar neutrino experiments, especially in the regime of small couplings and light mediators where all other probes become inefficient. In the latter regime these scenarios behave as familiar $3+1$ models in all channels except for solar data, where a Solar Dark MSW effect takes place. Solar Dark MSW is characterized by modifications of the most energetic $^8$B and CNO neutrinos, whereas the other fluxes remain largely unaffected., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures

A well-studied possibility is that dark matter may reside in a sector secluded from the Standard Model, except for the so-called photon portal: kinetic mixing between the ordinary and dark photons. Such interactions can be probed at dark matter direct detection experiments, and new experimental techniques involving detection of dark matter-electron scattering offer new sensitivity to sub-GeV dark matter. Typically however it is implicitly assumed that the dark matter is not altered as it traverses the Earth to arrive at the detector. In this paper we study in detail the effects of terrestrial stopping on dark photon models of dark matter, and find that they significantly reduce the sensitivity of XENON10 and DAMIC. In particular we find that XENON10 only excludes masses in the range (5-3000) MeV while DAMIC only probes (20-50) MeV. Their corresponding cross section sensitivity is reduced to a window of cross sections between $(5\times 10^{-38}-10^{-30})~{\rm cm}^{2}$ for XENON10 and a small window around $\sim 10^{-31}~{\rm cm}^{2}$ for DAMIC. Dark Matter (DM) may have a relic density that is in part determined by a particle/antiparticle asymmetry, much like baryons. If this is the case, it can accumulate in stars like the Sun to sizable number densities and annihilate to Standard Model (SM) particles including neutrinos. We show that the combination of neutrino telescope and direct detection data can be used in conjunction to determine or constrain the DM asymmetry from data. Depending on the DM mass, the current neutrino data from Super-K and IceCube give powerful constraints on asymmetric DM unless its fractional asymmetry is $\lesssim 10^{-2}$. Future neutrino telescopes and detectors like Hyper-K and KM3NeT can search for the resulting signal of high-energy neutrinos from the center of the Sun. The observation of such a flux yields information on both the DM-nucleus cross section but also on the relative abundances of DM and anti-DM., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

We examine a framework with light new physics, which couples to the Standard Model only via neutrino mixing. Taking the hints from the short-baseline anomalies seriously and combining them with modern cosmological data and recent IceCube measurements, we obtain surprisingly effective constraints on the hidden force: keV $\lesssim M \lesssim0.3$ GeV for the mediator mass and $g_{h}>10^{-6}-10^{-3}$ for the coupling constant. Flavor equilibration between the hidden and active neutrinos can be delayed until temperatures of $\sim 1$ MeV, but not below $\sim 100$ keV.
