We present the first determination of the proton mechanical radius. The result was obtained by employing a novel theoretical approach that connects experimental data of deeply virtual Compton scattering with the spin = 2 interaction that is characteristic of gravity coupling with matter. The electroexcitation amplitudes or $\gamma_vpN^*$ electrocouplings of the $N(1440)1/2^+$, $N(1520)3/2^-$, and $\Delta(1600)3/2^+$ resonances were obtained for the first time from the $ep \to e'\pi^+\pi^-p'$ differential cross sections measured with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab within the range of invariant mass $W$ of the final state hadrons from 1.4--1.7 GeV for photon virtualities $Q^2$ from 2.0--5.0 GeV$^2$. The electrocouplings were determined in independent fits of the $\pi^+\pi^-p$ cross sections within three overlapping $W$ intervals with a substantial contribution from each of the three resonances listed above. Consistent results on the electrocouplings extracted from the data in these $W$ intervals provide evidence for their reliable extraction. These studies extend information on the electrocouplings of the $N(1440)1/2^+$ and $N(1520)3/2^-$ available from this channel over a broader range of $Q^2$. The electrocouplings of the $\Delta(1600)3/2^+$, which decays preferentially into $\pi\pi N$ final states, have been determined for the first time. This document presents the initial scientific case for upgrading the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab (JLab) to 22 GeV. It is the result of a community effort, incorporating insights from a series of workshops conducted between March 2022 and April 2023. With a track record of over 25 years in delivering the world's most intense and precise multi-GeV electron beams, CEBAF's potential for a higher energy upgrade presents a unique opportunity for an innovative nuclear physics program, which seamlessly integrates a rich historical background with a promising future. The proposed physics program encompass a diverse range of investigations centered around the nonperturbative dynamics inherent in hadron structure and the exploration of strongly interacting systems. It builds upon the exceptional capabilities of CEBAF in high-luminosity operations, the availability of existing or planned Hall equipment, and recent advancements in accelerator technology. The proposed program cover various scientific topics, including Hadron Spectroscopy, Partonic Structure and Spin, Hadronization and Transverse Momentum, Spatial Structure, Mechanical Properties, Form Factors and Emergent Hadron Mass, Hadron-Quark Transition, and Nuclear Dynamics at Extreme Conditions, as well as QCD Confinement and Fundamental Symmetries. Each topic highlights the key measurements achievable at a 22 GeV CEBAF accelerator. Furthermore, this document outlines the significant physics outcomes and unique aspects of these programs that distinguish them from other existing or planned facilities. The physics of the gravitational form factors of the proton, and their understanding within quantum chromodynamics, has advanced significantly in the past two decades through both theory and experiment. This White Paper presents the community inputs and scientific conclusions from the Hot and Cold QCD Town Meeting that took place September 23-25, 2022 at MIT, as part of the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC) 2023 Long Range Planning process. A total of 424 physicists registered for the meeting. The meeting highlighted progress in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) nuclear physics since the 2015 LRP (LRP15) and identified key questions and plausible paths to obtaining answers to those questions, defining priorities for our research over the coming decade. In defining the priority of outstanding physics opportunities for the future, both prospects for the short (~ 5 years) and longer term (5-10 years and beyond) are identified together with the facilities, personnel and other resources needed to maximize the discovery potential and maintain United States leadership in QCD physics worldwide. This White Paper is organized as follows: In the Executive Summary, we detail the Recommendations and Initiatives that were presented and discussed at the Town Meeting, and their supporting rationales. Section 2 highlights major progress and accomplishments of the past seven years. It is followed, in Section 3, by an overview of the physics opportunities for the immediate future, and in relation with the next QCD frontier: the EIC. Section 4 provides an overview of the physics motivations and goals associated with the EIC. Section 5 is devoted to the workforce development and support of diversity, equity and inclusion. Branching ratios for the decay of hadrons with large width or near thresholds depend on their definition. We test different definitions and show that rather different branching ratios can be obtained. For wide resonances and for sequential decays with wide intermediate resonances, integration over the spectral functions is mandatory. The tests are performed exploiting the latest solution of the Bonn-Gatchina multi-channel analysis and published values for residues of light scalar mesons. For a resonance overlapping with a threshold, in case its pole lies in a non-adjacent sheet, we show how the total width, needed for the branching ratios, does not correspond to the imaginary part of the pole position. We use the Madrid-Krakow dispersive parameterizations to illustrate this situation with the $f_0(980)$., Comment: Report, 9 pages (extended to light scalar mesons)

The QCD effective charge $\alpha_{g_1}(Q)$ is an observable that characterizes the magnitude of the strong interaction. At high momentum $Q$, it coincides with the QCD running coupling $\alpha_{\rm s}(Q)$. At low $Q$, it offers a nonperturbative definition of the running coupling. We have extracted $\alpha_{g_1}(Q)$ from measurements carried out at Jefferson Lab that span the very low to moderately high $Q$ domain, $0.14 \leq Q \leq 2.18$ GeV. The precision of the new results is much improved over the previous extractions and the reach in $Q$ at the lower end is significantly expanded. The data show that $\alpha_{g_1}(Q)$ becomes $Q$-independent at very low $Q$. They compare well with two recent predictions of the QCD effective charge based on Dyson-Schwinger equations and on the AdS/CFT duality., Comment: 16 pages, 1 figure. Published version. Nucleon resonance contributions to the inclusive proton $F_2$ and $F_L$ structure functions are computed from resonance electroexcitation amplitudes in the mass range up to 1.75 GeV extracted from CLAS exclusive meson electroproduction data. Taking into account for the first time quantum interference effects, the resonance contributions are compared with inclusive proton structure functions evaluated from $(e,e'X)$ cross section data and the longitudinal to transverse cross section ratio. Contributions from isospin-1/2 and 3/2 resonances remain substantial over the entire range of photon virtualities $Q^2 \lesssim 4$ GeV$^2$, where their electroexcitation amplitudes have been obtained, and their $Q^2$ evolution displays pronounced differences in the first, second and third resonance regions. We compare the structure functions in the resonance region with those computed from parton distributions fitted to deep-inelastic scattering data, and extrapolated to the resonance region, providing new quantitative assessments of quark-hadron duality in inclusive electron-proton scattering.

We report on the first determination of the shear forces quarks inside the proton from experimental data on deeply virtual Compton scattering. The maximum shear force of approximately 40 MeV/fm occurs near 0.6 fm from the proton center, indicating where confinement forces may be strongest. On the macroscopic scale of the earth surface, this force corresponds to the weight of a mass of about 650 kg. This report describes the physics case, the resulting detector requirements, and the evolving detector concepts for the experimental program at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). The EIC will be a powerful new high-luminosity facility in the United States with the capability to collide high-energy electron beams with high-energy proton and ion beams, providing access to those regions in the nucleon and nuclei where their structure is dominated by gluons. Moreover, polarized beams in the EIC will give unprecedented access to the spatial and spin structure of the proton, neutron, and light ions. The studies leading to this document were commissioned and organized by the EIC User Group with the objective of advancing the state and detail of the physics program and developing detector concepts that meet the emerging requirements in preparation for the realization of the EIC. The effort aims to provide the basis for further development of concepts for experimental equipment best suited for the science needs, including the importance of two complementary detectors and interaction regions. This report consists of three volumes. Volume I is an executive summary of our findings and developed concepts. In Volume II we describe studies of a wide range of physics measurements and the emerging requirements on detector acceptance and performance. Volume III discusses general-purpose detector concepts and the underlying technologies to meet the physics requirements. We have measured beam-spin asymmetries to extract the $\sin\phi$ moment $A_{LU}^{\sin\phi}$ from the hard exclusive $\vec{e} p \to e^\prime n \pi^+$ reaction above the resonance region, for the first time with nearly full coverage from forward to backward angles in the center-of-mass. The $A_{LU}^{\sin\phi}$ moment has been measured up to 6.6 GeV$^{2}$ in $-t$, covering the kinematic regimes of Generalized Parton Distributions (GPD) and baryon-to-meson Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDA) at the same time. The experimental results in very forward kinematics demonstrate the sensitivity to chiral-odd and chiral-even GPDs. In very backward kinematics where the TDA framework is applicable, we found $A_{LU}^{\sin\phi}$ to be negative, while a sign change was observed near 90$^\circ$ in the center-of-mass. The unique results presented in this paper will provide critical constraints to establish reaction mechanisms that can help to further develop the GPD and TDA frameworks.

Positron beams, both polarized and unpolarized, are identified as essential ingredients for the experimental programs at the next generation of lepton accelerators. In the context of the hadronic physics program at Jefferson Lab (JLab), positron beams are complementary, even essential, tools for a precise understanding of the electromagnetic structure of nucleons and nuclei, in both the elastic and deep-inelastic regimes. For instance, elastic scattering of polarized and unpolarized electrons and positrons from the nucleon enables a model independent determination of its electromagnetic form factors. Also, the deeply-virtual scattering of polarized and unpolarized electrons and positrons allows unambiguous separation of the different contributions to the cross section of the lepto-production of photons and of lepton-pairs, enabling an accurate determination of the nucleons and nuclei generalized parton distributions, and providing an access to the gravitational form factors. Furthermore, positron beams offer the possibility of alternative tests of the Standard Model of particle physics through the search of a dark photon, the precise measurement of electroweak couplings, and the investigation of charged lepton flavor violation. The topical workshop {\it Strong QCD from Hadron Structure Experiments} took place at Jefferson Lab from Nov. 6-9, 2019. Impressive progress in relating hadron structure observables to the strong QCD mechanisms has been achieved from the {\it ab initio} QCD description of hadron structure in a diverse array of methods in order to expose emergent phenomena via quasi-particle formation. The wealth of experimental data and the advances in hadron structure theory make it possible to gain insight into strong interaction dynamics in the regime of large quark-gluon coupling (the strong QCD regime), which will address the most challenging problems of the Standard Model on the nature of the dominant part of hadron mass, quark-gluon confinement, and the emergence of the ground and excited state hadrons, as well as atomic nuclei, from QCD. This workshop aimed to develop plans and to facilitate the future synergistic efforts between experimentalists, phenomenologists, and theorists working on studies of hadron spectroscopy and structure with the goal to connect the properties of hadrons and atomic nuclei available from data to the strong QCD dynamics underlying their emergence from QCD. The analysis of the nine 1-fold differential cross sections for the $\gamma_{r,v} p \to \pi^+\pi^-p$ photo- and electroproduction reactions obtained with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Laboratory was carried out with the goal to establish the contributing resonances in the mass range from 1.6~GeV to 1.8~GeV. In order to describe the photo- and electroproduction data with $Q^2$-independent resonance masses and hadronic decay widths in the $Q^2$ range below 1.5~GeV$^2$, it was found that an $N'(1720)3/2^+$ state is required in addition to the already well-established nucleon resonances. This work demonstrates that the combined studies of $\pi^+\pi^-p$ photo- and electroproduction data are vital for the observation of this resonance. The contributions from the $N'(1720)3/2^+$ state and the already established $N(1720)3/2^+$ state with a mass of 1.745~GeV are well separated by their different hadronic decays to the $\pi \Delta$ and $\rho p$ final states and the different $Q^2$-evolution of their photo-/electroexcitation amplitudes. The $N'(1720)3/2^+$ state is the first recently established baryon resonance for which the results on the $Q^2$-evolution of the photo-/electrocouplings have become available. The first CLAS12 experiments will provide high-precision data on inclusive electron scattering observables at a photon virtuality $Q^2$ ranging from 0.05 GeV$^2$ to 12 GeV$^2$ and center-of-mass energies $W$ up to 4 GeV. In view of this endeavour, we present the modeling of the resonant contributions to the inclusive electron scattering observables. As input, we use the existing CLAS electrocoupling results obtained from exclusive meson electroproduction data off protons, and evaluate for the first time the resonant contributions based on the experimental results on the nucleon resonance electroexcitation. The uncertainties are given by the data and duly propagated through a Monte Carlo approach. In this way, we obtain estimates for the resonant contributions, important for insight into the nucleon parton distributions in the resonance region and for the studies of quark-hadron duality.

The cross section of atomic electron Compton scattering $\gamma + e \rightarrow \gamma^\prime + e^\prime $ was measured in the 4.40--5.475 GeV photon beam energy region by the {\em PrimEx} collaboration at Jefferson Lab with an accuracy of 2\% and less. The results are consistent with theoretical predictions that include next-to-leading order radiative corrections. The measurements provide the first high precision test of this elementary QED process at beam energies greater than 0.1 GeV., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The results on the photo- and electroexcitation amplitudes of most nucleon resonances in the mass range up to 2.0 GeV determined from the CLAS experimental data on exclusive $\pi^+\pi^-p$ photo-/electroproduction off protons in collaboration between the Jefferson Lab and Moscow State University are presented. The first and only available results on electroexcitation amplitudes from CLAS in a wide range of photon virtualities $Q^2$ $<$ 5.0 GeV$^2$ revealed the nucleon resonance structure as a complex interplay between the inner core of three dressed quarks and external meson-baryon cloud. These results shed light on the strong QCD dynamics which underlines the generation of excited nucleon states of different structural features from confined quarks and gluons. The Heavy Photon Search experiment took its first data in a 2015 engineering run using a 1.056 GeV, 50 nA electron beam provided by CEBAF at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, searching for an electro-produced dark photon. Using 1.7 days (1170 nb$^{-1}$) of data, a search for a resonance in the $e^{+}e^{-}$ invariant mass distribution between 19 and 81 MeV/c$^2$ showed no evidence of dark photon decays above the large QED background, confirming earlier searches and demonstrating the full functionality of the experiment. Upper limits on the square of the coupling of the dark photon to the Standard Model photon are set at the level of 6$\times$10$^{-6}$. This paper reports the measurement of polarized and unpolarized cross sections for the ep -> e'p' reaction, which is comprised of Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) and Bethe-Heitler (BH) processes, at an electron beam energy of 5.88 GeV at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility using the Large Acceptance Spectrometer CLAS. The unpolarized cross sections and polarized cross section differences have been measured over broad kinematics, 0.10 < x_B < 0.58, 1.0 < Q^2 < 4.8 GeV^2, and 0.09 < -t < 2.00 GeV^2. The results are found to be consistent with previous CLAS data, and these new data are discussed in the framework of the generalized parton distribution approach. We report the predictions for the 3q core contributions to the electroexcitation of the resonances Delta(1232)3/2+, N(1440)1/2+, N(1520)3/2-, N(1535)1/2-, and N(1675)5/2- on the proton obtained in the light-front relativistic quark model (LF RQM). We present precision measurements of the target and beam-target spin asymmetries from neutral pion electroproduction in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at Jefferson Lab. We scattered 6-GeV, longitudinally polarized electrons off longitudinally polarized protons in a cryogenic $^{14}$NH$_3$ target, and extracted double and single target spin asymmetries for $ep\rightarrow e^\prime\pi^0X$ in multidimensional bins in four-momentum transfer ($1.0

The cross section of the exclusive $\eta$ electroproduction reaction $ep\to e^\prime p^\prime \eta$ was measured at Jefferson Lab with a 5.75-GeV electron beam and the CLAS detector. Differential cross sections $d^4\sigma/dtdQ^2dx_Bd\phi_\eta$ and structure functions $\sigma_U = \sigma_T+\epsilon\sigma_L, \sigma_{TT}$ and $\sigma_{LT}$, as functions of $t$ were obtained over a wide range of $Q^2$ and $x_B$. The $\eta$ structure functions are compared with those previously measured for $\pi^0$ at the same kinematics. At low $t$, both $\pi^0$ and $\eta$ are described reasonably well by generalized parton distributions (GPDs) in which chiral-odd transversity GPDs are dominant. The $\pi^0$ and $\eta$ data, when taken together, can facilitate the flavor decomposition of the transversity GPDs., Comment: 16 pages, 16 figures

We investigate the impact of the configurations mixings that follow from QCD-inspired interquark forces on our results for the electroexcitation of the Delta(1232)3/2+, N(1440)1/2+, and Delta(1600)3/2+ obtained earlier in the light-front relativistic quark model. We have shown that the configurations mixings increase the 3q contribution to the gamma* N -> Delta(1232)3/2+ magnetic-dipole form factor at Q2=0 from 42% to 63% and significantly improve the agreement with experiment for the gamma* p -> N(1440)1/2+ transverse helicity amplitude at Q2 > 1.5GeV2. For the gamma* N -> Delta(1600)3/2+ transition, configuration mixings change strongly the results obtained earlier for the N and Delta(1600)3/2+ taken as pure states in the multiplets [56,0+] and [56',0+]., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We discuss recent results from CLAS on electromagnetic resonance transition amplitudes and their dependence on the distance scale ($Q^2$). From the comparison of these results with most advanced theoretical calculations within QCD-based approaches there is clear evidence that meson-baryon contributions are present and important at large distances, i.e. small $Q^2$, and that quark core contributions dominate the short distance behavior., Comment: Talk presented CIPANP2015, 8 pages, LATEX, 8 pdf figures

The transition helicity amplitudes from the proton ground state to the $N(1440)1/2^+$, $N(1520)3/2^-$, and $\Delta(1620)1/2^-$ resonances ($\gamma_vpN^*$ electrocouplings) were determined from the analysis of nine independent one-fold differential $\pi^+ \pi^- p$ electroproduction cross sections off a proton target, taken with CLAS at photon virtualities 0.5 GeV$^2$ $< Q^2 <$ 1.5 GeV$^2$. The phenomenological reaction model employed for separation of the resonant and non-resonant contributions to this exclusive channel was further developed. The $N(1440)1/2^+$, $N(1520)3/2^-$, and $\Delta(1620)1/2^-$ electrocouplings were obtained from the resonant amplitudes of charged double-pion electroproduction off the proton in the aforementioned area of photon virtualities for the first time. Consistent results on $\gamma_vpN^*$ electrocouplings available from independent analyses of several $W$-intervals with different non-resonant contributions offer clear evidence for the reliable extraction of these fundamental quantities. These studies also improved the knowledge on hadronic branching ratios for the $N(1440)1/2^+$, $N(1520)3/2^-$, and $\Delta(1620)1/2^-$ decays to the $\pi \Delta$ and $\rho N$ final states. These new results provide a substantial impact on the QCD-based approaches that describe the $N^*$ structure and demonstrate the capability to explore fundamental ingredients of the non-perturbative strong interaction that are behind the excited nucleon state formation., Comment: the paper submitted to Phys. The magnetic-dipole form factor and the ratios R_EM and R_SM for the gamma* N -> Delta(1232)3/2}+ transition are predicted within light-front relativistic quark model up to photon virtuality Q2=12 GeV2. We also predict the helicity amplitudes of the gamma* N -> Delta(1600)3/2+ transition assuming the Delta(1600)3/2+ is the first radial excitation of the ground state Delta(1232)3/2+., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

We report on the determination of the electrocouplings for the transition from the proton to the $N(1675){\frac{5}{2}}^-$ resonance state using recent differential cross section data on $e p \rightarrow e\pi^+ n$ by the CLAS collaboration at $1.8 \le Q^2 < 4.5$GeV$^2$. The data have been analyzed using two different approaches, the unitary isobar model and fixed-t dispersion relations. The extracted $\gamma^* p\rightarrow N(1675){\frac{5}{2}}^-$ helicity amplitudes show considerable coupling through the $A^p_{1/2}$ amplitude, that is significantly larger than predicted three-quark contribution to this amplitude. The amplitude $A^p_{3/2}$ is much smaller. Both results are consistent with the predicted sizes of the meson-baryon contributions at $Q^2 \geq 1.8 $GeV$^2$ from the dynamical coupled-channel model., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1412.0274

Studies of the structure of excited baryons are key to the N* program at Jefferson Lab. Within the first year of data taking with the Hall B CLAS12 detector following the 12 GeV upgrade, a dedicated experiment will aim to extract the N* electrocouplings at high photon virtualities Q2. This experiment will allow exploration of the structure of N* resonances at the highest photon virtualities ever yet achieved, with a kinematic reach up to Q2 = 12 GeV2. This high-Q2 reach will make it possible to probe the excited nucleon structures at distance scales ranging from where effective degrees of freedom, such as constituent quarks, are dominant through the transition to where nearly massless bare-quark degrees of freedom are relevant. In this document, we present a detailed description of the physics that can be addressed through N* structure studies in exclusive meson electroproduction. The discussion includes recent advances in reaction theory for extracting N* electrocouplings from meson electroproduction off protons, along with QCD-based approaches to the theoretical interpretation of these fundamental quantities. This program will afford access to the dynamics of the non-perturbative strong interaction responsible for resonance formation, and will be crucial in understanding the nature of confinement and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in baryons, and how excited nucleons emerge from QCD., Comment: 91 pages, 52 figures

Exclusive $\pi^0$ electroproduction at a beam energy of 5.75 GeV has been measured with the Jefferson Lab CLAS spectrometer. Differential cross sections were measured at more than 1800 kinematic values in $Q^2$, $x_B$, $t$, and $\phi_\pi$, in the $Q^2$ range from 1.0 to 4.6 GeV$^2$,\ $-t$ up to 2 GeV$^2$, and $x_B$ from 0.1 to 0.58. Structure functions $\sigma_T +\epsilon \sigma_L, \sigma_{TT}$ and $\sigma_{LT}$ were extracted as functions of $t$ for each of 17 combinations of $Q^2$ and $x_B$. The data were compared directly with two handbag-based calculations including both longitudinal and transversity GPDs. Inclusion of only longitudinal GPDs very strongly underestimates $\sigma_T +\epsilon \sigma_L$ and fails to account for $\sigma_{TT}$ and $\sigma_{LT}$, while inclusion of transversity GPDs brings the calculations into substantially better agreement with the data. There is very strong sensitivity to the relative contributions of nucleon helicity flip and helicity non-flip processes. The results confirm that exclusive $\pi^0$ electroproduction offers direct experimental access to the transversity GPDs., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

The transition helicity amplitudes from the proton ground state to the $P_{11}(1440)$ and $D_{13}(1520)$ excited states ($\gamma_{v}pN^*$ electrocouplings) were determined from the analysis of nine independent one-fold differential $\pi^{+} \pi^{-} p$ electroproduction cross sections off a proton target, taken with CLAS at photon virtualities 0.25\enskip {\rm GeV$^{2}$} $<$ $Q^{2}$ $<$ 0.60 \enskip {\rm GeV$^{2}$}. The phenomenological reaction model was employed for separation of the resonant and non-resonant contributions to the final state. The $P_{11}(1440)$ and $D_{13}(1520)$ electrocouplings were obtained from the resonant amplitudes parametrized within the framework of a unitarized Breit-Wigner ansatz. They are consistent with results obtained in the previous CLAS analyses of the $\pi^+n$ and $\pi^0p$ channels. The successful description of a large body of data in dominant meson-electroproduction channels off protons with the same $\gamma_{v}pN^*$ electrocouplings offers clear evidence for the reliable extraction of these fundamental quantities from meson-electroproduction data. This analysis also led to the determination of the long-awaited hadronic branching ratios for the $D_{13}(1520)$ decay into $\Delta\pi$ (24%-32%) and $N\rho$ (8%-17%)., Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures, 9 tables, accepted for publication in PRC

We utilize a light-front relativistic quark model (LF RQM) to predict the 3q core contribution to the electroexcitation amplitudes for the Delta(1232)P33, N(1440)P11, N(1520)D13, and N(1535)S11 up to Q2= 12GeV2. The parameters of the model have been specified via description of the nucleon electromagnetic form factors in the approach that combines 3q and pion-cloud contributions in the LF dynamics., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We review recent progress in the investigation of the electroexcitation of nucleon resonances, both in experiment and in theory. The most accurate results have been obtained for the electroexcitation amplitudes of the four lowest excited states, which have been measured in a range of Q2 up to 8 and 4.5 GeV2 for the Delta(1232)P33, N(1535)S11 and N(1440)P11, N(1520)D13}, respectively. These results have been confronted with calculations based on lattice QCD, large-Nc relations, perturbative QCD (pQCD), and QCD-inspired models. The amplitudes for the Delta(1232) indicate large pion-cloud contributions at low Q2 and don't show any sign of approaching the pQCD regime for Q2<7 GeV2. Measured for the first time, the electroexcitation amplitudes of the Roper resonance, N(1440)P11, provide strong evidence for this state as a predominantly radial excitation of a three-quark (3q) ground state, with additional non-3-quark contributions needed to describe the low Q2 behavior of the amplitudes. The longitudinal transition amplitude for the N(1535)S11 was determined and has become a challenge for quark models. Explanations may require large meson-cloud contributions or alternative representations of this state. The N(1520)D13 clearly shows the rapid changeover from helicity-3/2 dominance at the real photon point to helicity-1/2 dominance at Q2 > 0.5 GeV2, confirming a long-standing prediction of the constituent quark model. Transition helicity amplitudes $\gamma_{v}NN^*$ (electrocouplings) were determined for prominent excited proton states with masses below 1.8 GeV in independent analyses of major meson electroproduction channels: $\pi^{+}n$, $\pi^0p$ and $\pi^+\pi^-p$. Consistent results on resonance electrocouplings obtained from analyses of these exclusive reactions with different non-resonant contributions demonstrate reliable extraction of these fundamental quantities for states that have significant decays for either $N\pi$ or $N\pi\pi$ channels. Preliminary results on electrocouplings of $N^*$ states with masses above 1.6 GeV have become available from the CLAS data on $\pi^+\pi^-p$ electroproduction off protons for the first time. Comparison with quark models and coupled-channel approaches strongly suggest that $N^*$ structure is determined by contributions from an internal core of three constituent quarks and an external meson-baryon cloud at the distances covered in these measurements with the CLAS detector., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

We discuss the results on the fundamental degrees of freedom underlying the nucleon excitation spectrum and how they evolve as the resonance transitions are investigated with increasingly better space-time resolution of the electromagnetic probe. The search for undiscovered but predicted states continues to be pursued with a vigorous experimental program. We present results on the electroexcitation of the low mass resonances Delta(1232)P33, N(1440)P11, N(1520)D13, and N(1535)S11 in a wide range of Q2. The results were obtained in the comprehensive analysis of JLab-CLAS data on differential cross sections, longitudinally polarized beam asymmetries, and longitudinal target and beam-target asymmetries for pion electroproduction off the proton. The data were analysed using two conceptually different approaches, fixed-t dispersion relations and a unitary isobar model, allowing us to draw conclusions on the model sensitivity of the obtained electrocoupling amplitudes. The amplitudes for the Delta(1232)P33} show the importance of a meson-cloud contribution to quantitatively explain the magnetic dipole strength, as well as the electric and scalar quadrupole transitions. They do not show any tendency of approaching the pQCD regime for Q2<6 GeV2. For the Roper resonance, N(1440)P11, the data provide strong evidence for this state as a predominantly radial excitation of a 3-quark ground state. Measured in pion electroproduction, the transverse helicity amplitude for the N(1535)S11 allowed us to obtain the branching ratios of this state to the piN and etaN channels via comparison to the results extracted from eta electroproduction. The extensive CLAS data also enabled the extraction of the gamma*p -> N(1520)D13 and N(1535)S11 longitudinal helicity amplitudes with good precision., Comment: 23 pages, 17 figures

The helicity amplitudes of the electroexcitation of the Roper resonance are extracted for 1.7 < Q2 < 4.5 GeV2 from recent high precision JLab-CLAS cross section and longitudinally polarized beam asymmetry data for pi+ electroproduction on protons at W=1.15-1.69 GeV. The analysis is made using two approaches, dispersion relations and a unitary isobar model, which give consistent results. It is found that the transverse helicity amplitude A_{1/2} for the gamma* p -> N(1440)P11 transition, which is large and negative at Q2=0, becomes large and positive at Q2 ~ 2 GeV2, and then drops slowly with Q2. The longitudinal helicity amplitude S_{1/2}, which was previously found from CLAS ep -> eppi0,enpi+ data to be large and positive at Q2=0.4,0.65 GeV2, drops with Q2. Available model predictions for gamma* p -> N(1440)P11 allow us to conclude that these results provide strong evidence in favor of N(1440)P11 as a first radial excitation of the 3q ground state. The results of the present paper also confirm the conclusion of our previous analysis for Q2 < 1 GeV2 that the presentation of N(1440)P11 as a 3qG hybrid state is ruled out., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

We present a new extraction of the effective strong coupling constant \alpha_{s,g_1}(Q^2). The result agrees with a previous determination and extends the measurement of the low and high Q^2 behavior of \alpha_{s,g_1}(Q^2) that was previously deduced from sum rules. In particular, it experimentally verifies the lack of Q^2-dependence of \alpha_{s,g_1}(Q^2) in the low Q^2 limit. This fact is necessary for application of the AdS/CFT correspondence to QCD calculations. We provide a parameterization of \alpha_{s,g_1}(Q^2) thatcan equivalently be used to parameterize the Q^2-dependence of the generalized Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn and Bjorken sums., Comment: Updated to the version published in PLB (minor modifications)

The exclusive electroproduction process $\vec{e}p \to e^\prime n \pi^+$ was measured in the range of the photon virtuality $Q^2 = 1.7 - 4.5 \rm{GeV^2}$, and the invariant mass range for the $n\pi^+$ system of $W = 1.15 - 1.7 \rm{GeV}$ using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer. For the first time, these kinematics are probed in exclusive $\pi^+$ production from protons with nearly full coverage in the azimuthal and polar angles of the $n\pi^+$ center-of-mass system. The $n\pi^+$ channel has particular sensitivity to the isospin 1/2 excited nucleon states, and together with the $p\pi^0$ final state will serve to determine the transition form factors of a large number of resonances. The largest discrepancy between these results and present modes was seen in the $\sigma_{LT'}$ structure function. In this experiment, 31,295 cross section and 4,184 asymmetry data points were measured. Because of the large volume of data, only a reduced set of structure functions and Legendre polynomial moments can be presented that are obtained in model-independent fits to the differential cross sections.

The longitudinal target-spin asymmetry A_UL for the exclusive electroproduction of high energy photons was measured for the first time in p(e,e'p\gamma). The data have been accumulated at Jefferson Lab with the CLAS spectrometer using 5.7 GeV electrons and a longitudinally polarized NH_3 target. A significant azimuthal angular dependence was observed, resulting from the interference of the Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering and Bethe-Heitler processes. The amplitude of the sin(phi) moment is 0.252 +/- 0.042(stat) +/- 0.020(sys). Theoretical calculations are in good agreement with the magnitude and the kinematic dependence of the target-spin asymmetry, which is sensitive to the generalized parton distributions H and H-tilde., Comment: Modified text slightly, added references

First comprehensive data on the evolution of nucleon resonance photocouplings with photon virtuality Q^2 are presented for excited proton states in the mass range from 1.4 to 2.0 GeV. We present a first attempt to experimentally extract an effective strong coupling constant that we define to be a low Q2 extension of a previous definition by S. Brodsky et al. following an initial work of G. Grunberg. Using Jefferson Lab data and sum rules, we establish its Q2-behavior over the complete Q2-range. The result is compared to effective coupling constants inferred from different processes and to calculations based on Schwinger-Dyson equations, hadron spectroscopy or lattice QCD. Data on single- and double-charged pion electroproduction off protons are successfully described in the second and third nucleon resonance regions with common N* photocouplings. The analysis was carried out using separate isobar models for both reactions. Inspired by recent measurements with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab, we perform a self-consistent analysis of world data on the proton structure function g1 in the range 0.17 < Q2 < 30 (GeV/c)**2. We compute for the first time low-order moments of g1 and study their evolution from small to large values of Q2. The analysis includes the latest data on both the unpolarized inclusive cross sections and the ratio R = sigmaL / sigmaT from Jefferson Lab, as well as a new model for the transverse asymmetry A2 in the resonance region. The contributions of both leading and higher twists are extracted, taking into account effects from radiative corrections beyond the next-to-leading order by means of soft-gluon resummation techniques. The leading twist is determined with remarkably good accuracy and is compared with the predictions obtained using various polarized parton distribution sets available in the literature. The contribution of higher twists to the g1 moments is found to be significantly larger than in the case of the unpolarized structure function F2., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, to appear in Phys. The Regge exchange model used by Dzierba et al. is shown to be questionable, since the pion pole term is not allowed. Hence the Regge amplitudes in their calculation are exaggerated. The amount of kinematic reflection in the mass spectrum of the (nK+) system, which is one decay channel of a possible pentaquark, is not well justified in the fitting procedure used by Dzierba et al., as shown by comparison with the (K+K-) invariant mass spectrum, which is one decay channel of the a_2 and f_2 tensor mesons. While kinematic reflections are still a concern in some papers that have presented evidence for the pentaquark, better quantitative calculations are needed to demonstrate the significance of this effect., Comment: Comment submitted to Phys. Using two approaches: dispersion relations and isobar model, we have analyzed recent high precision CLAS data on cross sections of \pi^0, \pi^+, and \eta electroproduction on protons, and the longitudinally polarized electron beam asymmetry for p(\vec{e},e'p)\pi^0 and p(\vec{e},e'n)\pi^+. The contributions of the resonances P33(1232), P11(1440), D13(1520), S11(1535) to \pi electroproduction and S11(1535) to \eta electroproduction are found. The results obtained in the two approaches are in good agreement with each other. There is also good agreement between amplitudes of the \gamma^* N \to S11(1535) transition found in \pi and \eta electroproduction. We extract the Bjorken integral Gamma^{p-n}_1 in the range 0.17 < Q^2 < 1.10 GeV^2 from inclusive scattering of polarized electrons by polarized protons, deuterons and 3He, for the region in which the integral is dominated by nucleon resonances. These data bridge the domains of the hadronic and partonic descriptions of the nucleon. We perform a global analysis of all available spin-dependent proton structure function data, covering a large range of Q^2, 1 < Q^2 < 30 GeV^2, and calculate the lowest moment of the g_1 structure function as a function of Q^2. From the Q^2 dependence of the lowest moment we extract matrix elements of twist-4 operators, and determine the color electric and magnetic polarizabilities of the proton to be \chi_E = 0.026 +- 0.015 (stat) + 0.021/-0.024 (sys) and \chi_B = -0.013 -+ 0.007 (stat) - 0.010/+0.012 (sys), respectively., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, to appear in Phys.
