In this Letter, we present the first complete separation of the four electromagnetic structure functions above the resonance region in exclusive ω electroproduction off the proton, ep→e′pω, at central Q2 values of 1.60, 2.45 GeV2, at W=2.21 GeV. The results of our pioneering -u≈-umin study demonstrate the existence of a unanticipated backward-angle cross section peak and the feasibility of full L/T/LT/TT separations in this never explored kinematic territory. At Q2=2.45 GeV2, the observed dominance of σT over σL, is qualitatively consistent with the collinear QCD description in the near-backward regime, in which the scattering amplitude factorizes into a hard subprocess amplitude and baryon to meson transition distribution amplitudes: universal nonperturbative objects only accessible through backward-angle kinematics., Published by APS, College Park, Md.

We calculate at the leading order in $\alpha_s$ the QCD amplitude for exclusive neutrino production of a $D^*$ or $D_s^*$ charmed vector meson on a nucleon. We work in the framework of the collinear QCD approach where generalized parton distributions (GPDs) factorize from perturbatively calculable coefficient functions. We include $O(m_c)$ terms in the coefficient functions and $O(m_D)$ term in the definition of heavy meson distribution amplitudes. We estimate the scattering amplitude of the process $ p \bar{p} \,\to\, \bar{D^0} D^0$ within a double-handbag framework where transition distribution amplitudes, calculated through an overlap representation, factorize from a hard subprocess. We emphasize how large O(\alpha_s) corrections to timelike and spacelike virtual Compton scattering amplitudes are in the generalized Bjorken scaling regime, and in particular the gluonic contributions, even in the medium energy range which will be studied intensely at JLab12 and in the COMPASS-II experiment at CERN. We define in a systematic way, based on the light-cone collinear factorization method, the chiral-odd generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of a pseudoscalar hadron (such as the pi0) up to twist 5. For that, we introduce the relevant matrix elements for 2-parton non-local operators, as well as matrix elements for 3-parton non-local correlators. Their detailed parametrization is fixed based on parity, charge conjugation and time reversal invariance. This leads to the introduction of 20 real GPDs, whose symmetry properties are explicitely given. The reduction of these GPDs to a minimal set is performed by the use of constraints provided by QCD equations of motion and rotation on the light-cone. We show that these 20 GPDs can be expressed through 8 GPDs which satisfy 4 integral sum rules. A surprising outcome of this analysis is the fact that, when assuming the vanishing of 3-parton correlators, as in the so-called Wandzura-Wilczek approximation, the whole set of GPDs vanishes., Comment: 27 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

The associated production of a $J/{\psi}$ and a $\pi$-meson in antiproton-nucleon annihilation is studied in the framework of QCD collinear factorization. In this approach, a hard subprocess responsible for the production of the heavy quark-antiquark pair factorizes from soft hadronic matrix elements, such as the antiproton (nucleon) distribution amplitude and the nucleon-to-pion (antiproton-to-pion) transition distribution amplitude. The present note relies on the recently published conceptual design report of the LHeC and extends the first contribution to the European strategy debate in emphasising the role of the LHeC to complement and complete the high luminosity LHC programme. The brief discussion therefore focuses on the importance of high precision PDF and $\alpha_s$ determinations for the physics beyond the Standard Model (GUTs, SUSY, Higgs). Emphasis is also given to the importance of high parton density phenomena in nuclei and their relevance to the heavy ion physics programme at the LHC. The present note relies on the recently published conceptual design report of the LHeC and extends the first contribution to the European strategy debate in emphasising the role of the LHeC to complement and complete the high luminosity LHC programme. The brief discussion therefore focuses on the importance of high precision PDF and $\alpha_s$ determinations for the physics beyond the Standard Model (GUTs, SUSY, Higgs). Emphasis is also given to the importance of high parton density phenomena in nuclei and their relevance to the heavy ion physics programme at the LHC.

Nucleon to meson transition distribution amplitudes (TDAs), non-diagonal matrix elements of nonlocal three quark operators between a nucleon and a meson states, arise within the collinear factorized description of hard exclusive electroproduction of mesons off nucleons in the backward direction. Below we address the problem of modelling pion to nucleon TDAs. We suggest a factorized Ansatz for quadruple distributions with input from the soft pion theorem for pi N TDAs. In order to satisfy the polynomiality property in its full form the spectral representation is complemented with a D-term like contribution from the nucleon exchange in the u-channel of the reaction. Generalized Parton Distributions offer a new way to access the quark and gluon nucleon structure. We review recent progress in this domain, emphasizing the need to supplement the experimental study of DVCS by its crossed version, timelike Compton scattering (TCS), where data at high energy should appear thanks to the study of ultraperipheral collisions at the LHC. This will open the access to very low skewness quark and gluon GPDs. Our leading order estimates show that the factorization scale dependence of the amplitudes is quite high. This fact demands the understanding of higher order contributions with the hope that they will stabilize this scale dependence. The magnitudes of the NLO coefficient functions are not small and neither is the difference of the coefficient functions appearing respectively in the DVCS and TCS amplitudes. The conclusion is that extracting the universal GPDs from both TCS and DVCS reactions requires much care. We also describe the extension of the GPD concept to three quark operators and the relevance of their nucleon to meson matrix elements, namely the transition distribution amplitudes (TDAs) which factorize in hard exclusive pion electroproduction off a nucleon in the backward region and baryon-antibaryon annihilation into a pion and a lepton pair. The Regge inspired k_T-factorization scheme expresses the scattering amplitude for exclusive leptoproduction of a light vector meson rho in terms of two impact factors, one for the gamma* - rho transition and the other one for the nucleon to nucleon transition, with, at leading order, a two "reggeized" gluon exchange in the t-channel. We report here on a recent phenomenological study where we apply a previously developped scheme which consistently takes into account the twist 3 distribution amplitudes for transversely polarized rho meson. The computation of the gamma* to rho impact factor are performed within collinear factorization of QCD, up to the twist 3 level, based on the Collinear Factorization scheme applied to the amplitudes gamma*g to g rho . We calculate the O(alpha_s) corrections to the timelike, spacelike and double deeply virtual Compton scattering amplitudes in the generalized Bjorken scaling region. Special attention is devoted to studies of the difference between the next to leading order timelike and spacelike coefficient functions, which plays for this process a role analogous to the large K factor which was much discussed in the analysis of inclusive Drell Yan cross sections. Also in the present studies the timelike nature of the hard scale gives rise to new absorptive part of the amplitude and to the presence of characteristic pi^2 terms, which can potentially lead to sizeable corrections., Comment: 17 pages, 11 eps figures

Exclusive electroproduction of vector mesons is a crucial way to probe QCD factorization properties. Such a factorization is up to now only proven, at the twist 2 level, for a longitudinaly polarized meson. It is crucial to extend our understanding to the case of transversely polarized vector mesons. As a first step in this direction, we evaluate the impact factor of the transition gamma* -> rhoT, which is the relevant part of the amplitude within the kt-factorization approach valid at large energies, taking into account the twist 3 contributions, coming both from quark antiquark and from quark antiquark gluon correlators. We generalize for these quantities the notion of double distributions introduced in the context of generalized parton distributions. We propose the generalization of A.Radyushkin's factorized Ansatz for the case of baryon to meson and baryon to photon TDAs. Our construction opens the way to modeling of baryon to meson and baryon to photon TDAs in their complete domain of definition and quantitative estimates of cross-sections for various hard exclusive reactions.

The HERA experiment recently provided precise data for rho electroproduction, including all spin density matrix elements. From QCD, it is expected that such a process should factorize between a hard (calculable) coefficient function, and hadronic (p and rho) matrix elements. Such a factorization is up to now only proven for a longitudinaly polarized rho. Within the kt-factorization approach (valid at large gamma* p invariant mass), we evaluate the impact factor of the transition gamma* -> rhoT taking into account the twist 3 contributions. We show that a gauge invariant expression is obtained with the help of QCD equations of motion. More generally, relying on these equations and on the invariance under rotation on the light-cone of the factorized amplitude, the non-perturbative Distribution Amplitudes can be reduced to a minimal set. QCD is the theory of strong interactions and non-perturbative methods have been developed to address the confinement property of QCD. Many experimental measurements probe the confining dynamics, and it is well-known that hard scattering processes allow the extraction of non perturbative hadronic matrix elements. To study exclusive hard processes, such as electromagnetic form factors and reactions like gamma* N -> gamma N', gamma* N -> pi N', gamma* gamma -> pi pi, antiproton proton ->gamma* pi in particular kinematics (named as generalized Bjorken regime), one introduces specific non-perturbative objects, namely generalized parton distributions (GPDs), distribution amplitudes (DA) and transition distribution amplitudes (TDA), which are Fourier transformed non-diagonal matrix elements of non-local operators on the light-cone. We review here a selected sample of exclusive amplitudes in which the quark and gluon content of hadrons is probed, and emphasize that much remains to be done to successfully compute their non-perturbative parts. International audience; We calculate the lowest order QCD amplitude, i.e. the quark exchange contribution, to the forward production amplitude of a pair of longitudinally polarized $\rho$ mesons in the scattering of two virtual photons $\gamma^*(Q_1) \gamma^*(Q_2) \to \rho^0_L \rho^0_L$. We show that the scattering amplitude simultaneously factorizes in two quite different ways: the part with transverse photons is described by the QCD factorization formula involving the generalized distribution amplitude of two final $\rho$ mesons, whereas the part with longitudinally polarized photons takes the QCD factorized form with the $\gamma^*_L \to \rho^0_L$ transition distribution amplitude. Perturbative expressions for these, in general, non-perturbative functions are obtained in terms of the $\rho-$meson distribution amplitude.

We have shown that the lowest order QCD amplitude, i.e. the quark exchange contribution, to the forward production of a pair of longitudinally polarized rmesons in the scattering of two virtual photons gamma (Q1) gamma (Q2) rho rho factorizes in two different ways: the part with transverse photons is described by the QCD factorization formula involving the generalized distribution amplitude of two final rho mesons, whereas the part with longitudinally polarized photons takes the QCD factorized form with the gamma rho transition distribution amplitude. We study the scaling regime of nucleon-anti-nucleon annihilation into a deeply virtual photon and a photon or meson, \bar p N -> gamma ^* pi, \bar p N -> gamma ^* gamma, in the forward direction. The leading twist amplitude factorizes into an antiproton distribution amplitude, a short-distance matrix element and a long-distance dominated transition distribution amplitude (TDA) which describes the nucleon to meson or photon transition. Exotic hybrid mesons H, with quantum numbers J^{PC}= 1^{- +} may be copiously produced in the hard exclusive processes gamma^*(Q^2) gamma -> H and gamma^*(Q^2) P(p) -> H P(p') because they have a leading twist distribution amplitude with a sizable coupling constant f_H, which may be estimated through QCD sum rules. Exclusive electroproduction of a K or K^* meson on the nucleon can give a Theta^+ pentaquark in the final state. This reaction offers an opportunity to investigate the structure of pentaquark baryons at parton level.
