Abstract

Results are presented of a study of opposite-sign dimuon events observed in a fine-grained neutrino detector exposed to the Fermilab Tevatron wide-band neutrino beam. A total of 300 background-corrected ${\ensuremath{\mu}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ events induced by incident neutrinos and antineutrinos with energies up to 500 GeV were accumulated. The data were analyzed in terms of a model based on charmquark production followed by semileptonic decay of the charmed meson. The Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix terms were found to be ${|{U}_{\mathrm{cd}}|}^{2}=0.0378\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.0127 {(\mathrm{stat})}_{\ensuremath{-}0.0082}^{+0.0099} (\mathrm{syst})$, and $\ensuremath{\kappa}{|{U}_{\mathrm{cs}}|}^{2}=0.391\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.076 {(\mathrm{stat})}_{\ensuremath{-}0.066}^{+0.097} (\mathrm{syst})$. The ratio of the strange to nonstrange sea in the nucleon, $\ensuremath{\kappa}=\frac{2S}{(\overline{U}+\overline{D})}$, was measured to be 0.407\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.075 ${(\mathrm{stat})}_{\ensuremath{-}0.069}^{+0.103}$ (syst).

Abstract

A time-of-flight technique has been used to search for neutral weakly interacting massive particles in the wideband neutrino beam at the Fermilab Tevatron. Limits at the 90% confidence level are reported herein for (a) heavy neutrino production from the decay of heavy quark states, (b) massive objects directly produced in 800 GeV/c pN interactions that are noninteracting but unstable with a mean lifetime between ${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}8}$ and ${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}4}$ s, and (c) directly produced massive objects that are stable but weakly interacting with interaction cross sections between ${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}29}$ and ${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}31}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$.

Abstract

We describe the calibration of CRISIS, a charge sensitive drift chamber which makes possible the identification of charged particles with momentum between 5 and 100 GeV/ c . Results indicate an optimum resolution of (7.1 ± 0.2)% fwhm, which is an improvement over the predicted value of 7.8%. We characterize the efficiency for particle identification by the ratio b = (separation between π and p)/( σ π + σ p . We achieve a value of (0.94 ± 0.02), which compares favorably with the theoretical value of 0.87 at 200 GeV. In addition to particle identification, the data from this detector will augment the other components of the Fermilab hybrid spectrometer to reconstruct particle trajectories in real space.

Abstract

We consider three broad classes of nonstandard models for b quark decay: (1) b → llq with charged or neutral leptons of arbitrary flavor; (2) b → l q q ; and (3) b → qa − where a − is a Higgs boson or hyperpion. For these classes of models we have calculated the charged energy fraction and the inclusive yields of electrons, muons, protons, and lambdas. We demonstrate that these model predictions are inconsistent with CLEO measurements at the γ (4S).

Abstract

A measurement is presented of the inclusive production of charged ${D}^{*}$ and neutral $D$ mesons from nonresonant ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ annihilation in the energy region near the $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S)$ resonance. The momentum distribution shows a large contribution at high momenta as expected for heavy quark production. Comparison of the spectrum with several phenomenological models is made. The relative yields of the ${D}^{*}$ and $D$ mesons indicate that the charm cross section is dominated by the ${D}^{*}$ contribution.

Abstract

Results are reported based on a study of π − p interactions at 147 GeV/ c in the FERMILAB 30-inch Proportional Wire Hybrid Bubble Chamber System. We have measured the topological cross sections and separated two-prong elastic and inelastic channels. In addition, we have extracted leading particle cross sections using the increased momentum resolution of the downstream proportional wire chambers. We have compared our results with experiments and predictions of a simple fragmentation hyphothesis.

Abstract

A prototype hadron calorimeter, of similar design to the Warm Iron Calorimeter (WIC) planned for the SLD experiment, has been built and its performance has been studied in a test beam. The WIC is an iron sampling calorimeter whose active elements are plastic streamer tubes similar to those used for the Mont-Blanc proton decay experiment. The construction and operation of the tubes will be briefly described together with their use in an iron calorimeter - muon tracker. Efficiency, resolution and linearity have been measured in a hadron/muon beam up to 11 GeV. The measured values correspond to the SLD design goals.

Abstract

Evidence is presented for a narrow meson resonance of mass 1970\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}5\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}5 MeV produced in continuum ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ annihilations at $\sqrt{s}$ of 10.5 GeV, and decaying into a $\ensuremath{\phi}$ and a charged $\ensuremath{\pi}$.

Abstract

An analysis is presented of the production of jets in low-ptπ±p,k+p,pp collisions at 147 GeV/c collected at Fermilab in the rapid cycling hydrogen bubble chamber hybrid spectrometer. It is shown that selected events are more planar than predicted by a cylindrical phase space, but that 3-jet and 4-jet like structures seen in the momentum flows are reasonably reproduced by the cylindrical phase space events subjected to the same mathematical manipulation required to build momentum flows.

Abstract

Hadronic showers at six incident particle energies from 33.8 to 415.4 GeV have been studied using the low-density fine-grained flash chamber calorimeter of the Lab C neutrino detector at Fermilab. Transverse distributions of unprecedented fine granularity have been obtained for a range of depths in the shower. Longitudinal energy distributions have been compared with those from iron-scintillator detectors. Some differences are observed which may be attributable to the different relative sensitivity of the two detector types to electromagnetic and hadronic shower components. Both longitudinal and transverse distributions have been parametrized. Fluctuations in energy deposition have been studied. The relative size of the fluctuations is largest near the starting vertex and in the tail of the shower, and falls slowly with increasing beam energy. Correlations between energy deposition in neighboring parts of the shower are observed, and anticorrelation is seen between energy deposition in the peak and in the tail of the shower. Containment lengths and widths have also been measured and parametrized.

Abstract

The inclusive branching fraction for B-meson decay into D/sup 0/ mesons and the momentum spectrum of the D/sup 0/'s have been measured. 0.8 +- 0.2 +- 0.2 D/sup 0/ per B decay was found. The shape of the spectrum suggests an interesting picture of B-meson decay.

Abstract

We present in this paper a study of the ..delta../sup + +/(1232) inclusive production for momentum transfer squared to the target proton, vertical-bartvertical-bar < 1 (GeV/c)/sup 2/. We have investigated the production mechanism of the ..delta../sup + +/ by measuring its density matrix elements as a function of t and of the missing mass squared, M/sub X//sup 2/, and by carrying out a triple-Regge analysis. For vertical-bartvertical-bar < 0.4 (GeV/c)/sup 2/, the ..delta../sup + +/ production mechanism is consistent with one-pion exchange. We have also studied the average charged multiplicity recoiling from the ..delta../sup + +/ as a function of M/sub X//sup 2/, for vertical-bartvertical-bar < 0.4 (GeV/c)/sup 2/. The study yields information about the ..pi../sup -/..pi../sup -/ average charged multiplicity.

Abstract

From a study of 8-GeV/c ..pi../sup -/p interactions, the various two-pion and four-pion decay channels available to the g/sup -/ meson have been investigated. Our results indicate that the dominant 4..pi.. decay modes involve intermediate rho and ..omega.. production without significant A/sub 2/ formation.

Abstract

The branching fraction for the decay of the UPSILON(1S) into tau pairs has been measured to be 3.4 +- 0.4 +- 0.4%. This result agrees with the previously measured branching ratio of the decay into muon pairs.

Abstract

Results from a high-statistics experiment involving an exposure of the SLAC 82-in. hydrogen bubble chamber to a beam of 8-GeV/c ..pi../sup -/ yielding a final state of ..pi../sup -/..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/p are presented. Copious production of rho, ..delta../sup + +/, and f is found. Considerable quasi-two-body production in which one particle decays to one of the above resonances is also observed. Some double-resonance production involving baryon and meson resonances is also seen. The production properties of rho, ..delta../sup + +/, and f mesons are well described by a double-Regge model.

Abstract

Our recent paper ∗ described an analysis of the energy deposition in hadronic showers at six incident particle energies from 33.8 to 415.4 GeV using the low-density fine-grained flash chamber calorimeter of the Lab C neutrino detector at Fermilab. More recent work on the subject has led us to revise some of the results presented for energies above 200 GeV. We present here revised results for the longitudinal and transverse energy deposition, and new coefficients for the parametrization of these curves.

Abstract

A study of schannel and t-channel helicity conservation has been carried out on a prism plot separated sample of 3.9 GeV/c π±p → π (Nπ)dd diffraction dissociation events. s-channel helicity conservation is found to be strongly violated while t-channel helicity conservation is found to be mildly violated. These results are similar to that found at 11.7 GeV/c. We explain these violations on the basis of a “two-component model” of which the first component is a single exchange amplitude. We postulate that this amplitude is the generalization of the pomeron exchange amplitude which may conserve s-channel helicity. The second component of the model is a double exchange mechanism which strongly violates s-channel helicity. The predictions of this model agree with the experimental data.

Abstract

In a sample of B mesons from the decay of the UPSILON(4S) produced in e/sup +/e/sup -/ collisions at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, inclusive protons, antiprotons, lambdas and antilambdas have been observed. Lower limits to the B-to-baryon branching ratios are derived.

Abstract

We have searched for decays of the UPSILON(1S) into a single high-energy photon and a noninteracting long-lived particle, using the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. An upper limit of 3 x 10/sup -4/ (at 90% confidence level) is obtained for the branching ratio for such decays.

Abstract

We have studied a sample of events taken in the SLAC 82″ chamber and measured by PEPR. These events contain an identified proton with momentum less than 1 GeV/c. We have isolated the produced ρ0 and ω in these events and have been able to classify them as to production mechanism. We find that these vector mesons are mainly decay products of diffractively produced mesons.
