Abstract

The antiproton experiment PANDA at FAIR is designed to bring hadron physics to a new level in terms of scope, precision and accuracy. In this work, its unique capability for studies of hyperons is outlined. We discuss ground-state hyperons as diagnostic tools to study non-perturbative aspects of the strong interaction, and fundamental symmetries. New simulation studies have been carried out for two benchmark hyperon-antihyperon production channels: $\bar{p}p \to \bar{\Lambda}\Lambda$ and $\bar{p}p \to \bar{\Xi}^+\Xi^-$. The results, presented in detail in this paper, show that hyperon-antihyperon pairs from these reactions can be exclusively reconstructed with high efficiency and very low background contamination. In addition, the polarisation and spin correlations have been studied, exploiting the weak, self-analysing decay of hyperons and antihyperons. Two independent approaches to the finite efficiency have been applied and evaluated: one standard multidimensional efficiency correction approach, and one efficiency independent approach. The applicability of the latter was thoroughly evaluated for all channels, beam momenta and observables. The standard method yields good results in all cases, and shows that spin observables can be studied with high precision and accuracy already in the first phase of data taking with PANDA., Comment: 26 pages, 16 figures. Abstract

The KOALA experiment measures the differential cross section of (anti)proton–proton elastic scattering over a wide range of four-momentum transfer squared | t | from 0.0008 to 0.1 (GeV/c)2 . These data are essential input for the PANDA experiment to reach the desired absolute precision for the integrated luminosity determination. The KOALA experiment is based on fixed target kinematics and uses an internal hydrogen cluster jet target. The wide range of | t | is achieved by measuring the total kinetic energy of the recoil protons near 90 ° . The recoil detector consists of silicon and germanium single-sided strip sensors with an energy resolution of approximately 20 keV and 30 keV (FWHM), respectively. A forward detector consisting of two layers of plastic scintillators measures the elastically scattered beam particles in the forward direction close to the beam axis. By requiring a coincidence of the forward detector with the recoil detector, the large background at small recoil angles is suppressed, thereby improving the identification of elastic scattering events in the low | t | range. The KOALA setup has been installed and commissioned with proton beam at COSY in order to validate the detector by measuring the proton–proton elastic scattering. The results from this commissioning are presented here.

Abstract

The excitation function for the $pd\rightarrow$ $d p \pi^{0}$ reaction has been measured by WASA-at-COSY experiment with the aim of searching for $^{3}\hspace{-0.03cm}\mbox{He}$-$\eta$ mesic nuclei. The measurement in the vicinity of $\eta$ meson production was performed using a ramped proton beam. The data analysis and interpretation was carried out with the assumption that the $\eta$-mesic Helium decays via the formation of an intermediate N$^{*}$(1535) resonance. No direct signal of the $\eta$-mesic nucleus is observed in the excitation function. We determine a new improved upper limit for the total cross section for the bound state production and decay in the $pd\rightarrow$ $(^{3}\hspace{-0.03cm}\mbox{He}$-$\eta)_{bound} \rightarrow$ $d p \pi^{0}$ process. It varies between 13 nb to 24 nb for the bound state with width in the range $\Gamma \in (5,50)$ MeV.

Abstract

We report on the experimental search for the bound state of an η meson and He3 nucleus performed using the WASA-at-COSY detector setup. In order to search for the η-mesic nucleus decay, the pd→3He2γ and pd→3He6γ channels have been analysed. These reactions manifest the direct decay of the η meson bound in a He3 nucleus. This non-mesonic decay channel has been considered for the first time. When taking into account only statistical errors, the obtained excitation functions reveal a slight indication for a possible bound state signal corresponding to a 3He-η nucleus width Γ above 20 MeV and binding energy Bs between 0 and 15 MeV. However, the determined cross sections are consistent with zero in the range of the systematic uncertainty. Therefore, as final result we estimate only the upper limit for the cross section of the η-mesic He3 nucleus formation followed by the η meson decay which varies between 2 nb and 15 nb depending on possible bound state parameters. Abstract

We report on the search for the rare decay η → π 0 e + e − which is of interest to study C violation in the electromagnetic interaction which would indicate contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model, since the allowed decay via a two-photon intermediate state is strongly suppressed. The experiment has been performed using the WASA-at-COSY installation, located at the COSY accelerator of the Forschungszentrum Julich, Germany. In total 3 × 10 7 events of the reaction p d → 3 He η have been recorded at an excess energy of Q = 59.8 MeV . Based on this data set the C parity violating decay η → π 0 γ ⁎ → π 0 e + e − via a single-photon intermediate state has been searched for, resulting in new upper limits of Γ ( η → π 0 e + e − ) / Γ ( η → π + π − π 0 ) 3.28 × 10 − 5 and Γ ( η → π 0 e + e − ) / Γ ( η → all ) 7.5 × 10 − 6 ( CL = 90 % ), respectively.

Abstract

The goal of the P-349 experiment is to test whether 3.5 GeV/c antiprotons produced in high-energy proton-proton collisions are polarized in view of the preparation of a polarized antiproton beam. In this article, we present the details of the ongoing analysis focused on the drift chambers calibration and particle identification with DIRC.

Abstract

A quite simple procedure for the generation of a polarized antiproton beam could be worked out if antiprotons are produced with some polarization. In order to investigate this possibility measurements of the polarization of produced antiprotons have been started at a CERN/PS test beam. The polarization will be determined from the asymmetry of the elastic antiproton scattering at a liquid hydrogen target in the CNI region for which the analyzing power is well known. The data are under analysis and an additional measurement is done in 2018. Details on the experiment and the ongoing data analysis will be given.

Abstract

The $\overline{{\rm{P}}}\mathrm{ANDA}$ (anti-Proton ANnihiliation at DArmstadt) experiment will be one of the four flagship experiments at the new international accelerator complex FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) in Darmstadt, Germany. $\overline{{\rm{P}}}\mathrm{ANDA}$ will address fundamental questions of hadron physics and quantum chromodynamics using high-intensity cooled antiproton beams with momenta between 1.5 and 15 GeV/c and a design luminosity of up to 2 × 1032 cm−2 s−1. Excellent particle identification (PID) is crucial to the success of the $\overline{{\rm{P}}}\mathrm{ANDA}$ physics program. Hadronic PID in the barrel region of the target spectrometer will be performed by a fast and compact Cherenkov counter using the detection of internally reflected Cherenkov light (DIRC) technology. It is designed to cover the polar angle range from 22° to 140° and will provide at least 3 standard deviations (s.d.) π/K separation up to 3.5 GeV/c, matching the expected upper limit of the final state kaon momentum distribution from simulation. This documents describes the technical design and the expected performance of the $\overline{{\rm{P}}}\mathrm{ANDA}$ Barrel DIRC detector. The design is based on the successful BaBar DIRC with several key improvements. The performance and system cost were optimized in detailed detector simulations and validated with full system prototypes using particle beams at GSI and CERN. The final design meets or exceeds the PID goal of clean π/K separation with at least 3 s.d. over the entire phase space of charged kaons in the Barrel DIRC.

Abstract

Bound nuclear systems with two units of strangeness are still poorly known despite their importance for many strong interaction phenomena. Stored antiprotons beams in the GeV range represent an unparalleled factory for various hyperon-antihyperon pairs. Their outstanding large production probability in antiproton collisions will open the floodgates for a series of new studies of systems which contain two or even more units of strangeness at the PANDA experiment at FAIR. For the first time, high resolution gamma-spectroscopy of doubly strange Lambda Lambda-hypernuclei will be performed, thus complementing measurements of ground state decays of Lambda Lambda-hypernuclei at J-PARC or possible decays of particle unstable hypernuclei in heavy ion reactions. High resolution spectroscopy of multistrange Xi(-) -atoms will be feasible and even the production of Omega(-) -atoms will be within reach. The latter might open the door to the vertical bar S vertical bar = 3 world in strangeness nuclear physics, by the study of the hadronic Omega(-) -nucleus interaction. For the first time it will be possible to study the behavior of Xi(+) in nuclear systems under well controlled conditions. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

New data on both total and differential cross sections of the production of η mesons in proton–deuteron fusion to He3η in the excess energy region 13.6MeV≤Qη≤80.9MeV are presented. These data have been obtained with the WASA-at-COSY detector setup located at the Forschungszentrum Jülich, using a proton beam at 15 different beam momenta between pp=1.60GeV/c and pp=1.74GeV/c. While significant structure of the total cross section is observed in the energy region 20MeV≲Qη≲60MeV, a previously reported sharp variation around Qη≈50MeV cannot be confirmed. Angular distributions show the typical forward-peaking that was noted earlier. For the first time, it is possible to study the development of these angular distributions with rising excess energy over a wide interval.

Abstract

The $\stackrel{P\vec}{p}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}p{K}^{+}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ reaction has been measured with the COSY-TOF detector at a beam momentum of $2.7\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{GeV}/c$. The polarized proton beam enables the measurement of the beam analyzing power by the asymmetry of the produced kaon $({A}_{N}^{K})$. This observable allows the $p\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ spin triplet scattering length to be extracted for the first time model independently from the final state interaction in the reaction. The obtained value is ${a}_{t}=(\ensuremath{-}2.{55}_{\ensuremath{-}1.39}^{+0.72}{}_{\mathrm{stat}.}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.{6}_{\mathrm{syst}.}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.{3}_{\mathrm{theo}.})\mathrm{fm}$. This value is compatible with theoretical predictions and results from model-dependent analyses.

Abstract

The exclusive charmonium production process in (P) over barp annihilation with an associated pi 0 meson (p) over barp -> J/psi pi(0) is studied in the framework of QCD collinear factorization. The feasibility of measuring this reaction through the J/psi -> e(+) e(-) decay channel with the AntiProton ANnihilation at DArmstadt ((P) over bar ANDA) experiment is investigated. Simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as the background rejection from various sources including the (P) over barp -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) and (p) over barp -> J/psi pi(0)pi(0) reactions are performed with PANDAROOT, the simulation and analysis software framework of the (P) over bar ANDA experiment. It is shown that the measurement can be done at (P) over bar ANDA with significant constraining power under the assumption of an integrated luminosity attainable in four to five months of data taking at the maximum design luminosity.

Abstract

The WASA-at-COSY experiment has collected $3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{7}$ events with $\ensuremath{\eta}$ mesons produced via the reaction $pd\ensuremath{\rightarrow}^{3}\mathrm{He}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\eta}$ at $\mathrm{T}=1.0\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{GeV}$. Using this data set, we evaluate the branching ratios of the decays $\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$, $\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$, $\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$, and $\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}{e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$. The branching ratios are normalized to the $\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ decay. In addition an upper limit on a $CP$-violating asymmetry in $\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ is extracted.

Abstract

Presently the most popular way to prepare high quality polarized antiproton beams is the so called spin filter method. The feasibility of the method has been proven for a proton beam and measurements of the spin dependent interaction of antiprotons have been proposed by the PAX collaboration. Another well known source for polarized antiprotons is the \(\bar{\Lambda}\) decay which was used at FERMILAB in the only experiment performed so far with polarized antiprotons. An alternative approach for polarized antiproton beams may be the production process itself. If the produced antiprotons show polarization it would be rather simple to handle a polarized antiproton beam in the existing antiproton collector and cooler at CERN just like in the unpolarized case.

The polarization of antiprotons produced under typical conditions for antiproton beam preparation will be measured at the CERN/PS. If the production process creates some polarization a polarized antiproton beam could be prepared by a rather simple modification of the antiproton beam facility. The detection setup and the expected experimental conditions are described. Abstract

Baryon-to-meson Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDAs) encoding valuable new information on hadron structure appear as building blocks in the collinear factorized description for several types of hard exclusive reactions. In this paper, we address the possibility of accessing nucleon-to-pion ($��N$) TDAs from $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- ��^0$ reaction with the future PANDA detector at the FAIR facility. At high center of mass energy and high invariant mass squared of the lepton pair $q^2$, the amplitude of the signal channel $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- ��^0$ admits a QCD factorized description in terms of $��N$ TDAs and nucleon Distribution Amplitudes (DAs) in the forward and backward kinematic regimes. Assuming the validity of this factorized description, we perform feasibility studies for measuring $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- ��^0$ with the PANDA detector. Detailed simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as on rejection of the most severe background channel, i.e. $\bar{p}p \to ��^+��^- ��^0$ were performed for the center of mass energy squared $s = 5$ GeV$^2$ and $s = 10$ GeV$^2$, in the kinematic regions $3.0 < q^2 < 4.3$ GeV$^2$ and $5 < q^2 < 9$ GeV$^2$, respectively, with a neutral pion scattered in the forward or backward cone $| \cos��_{��^0}| > 0.5 $ in the proton-antiproton center of mass frame. Results of the simulation show that the particle identification capabilities of the PANDA detector will allow to achieve a background rejection factor of $5\cdot 10^7$ ($1\cdot 10^7$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=5$ GeV$^2$, and of $1\cdot 10^8$ ($6\cdot 10^6$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=10$ GeV$^2$, while keeping the signal reconstruction efficiency at around $40\%$. At both energies, a clean lepton signal can be reconstructed with the expected statistics corresponding to $2$ fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. Abstract

The production of eta and eta-prime mesons in elementary nucleon-nucleon collisions has been investigated at the synchrotrons CELSIUS, COSY and SATURNE. The magnitude and energy dependence of the total cross section as well as the occupation distribution of the phase space serve as observables for investigating the mechanisms underlying the production processes and the interaction of mesons with nucleons. The precise data on the eta and eta-prime creation via the pp --> pp eta(eta-prime) reactions allowed to settle the general features of the eta and eta-prime meson production and revealed the sensitivity of the mentioned observables to the nucleon-nucleon-meson final state interaction. The particular production properties, like for example the determination of the dominating exchange processes which lead to the excitation of the S_11 nucleon isobar in the case of eta creation, must be established by confrontation with other observables. The present status of this investigation with an emphasis on the results of the COSY-11 collaboration is briefly presented. Abstract

Taking advantage of both the high mass resolution of the COSY-11 detector and the high energy resolution of the low-emittance proton beam of the cooler synchrotron COSY, we determine the excitation function for the $pp\ensuremath{\rightarrow}pp{\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ reaction close to threshold. Combining these data with previous results, we extract the scattering length for the ${\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$-proton potential in free space to be $\mathrm{Re}({a}_{p{\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}})=0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.43\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{fm}$ and $\mathrm{Im}({a}_{p{\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}})={0.37}_{\ensuremath{-}0.16}^{+0.40}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{fm}$.

Abstract

The PS185 experiment at LEAR/CERN has investigated strangeness production in antiproton-proton collisions with final states such as $\overline{\Lambda} \Lambda$, $\overline{\Sigma}^0 \Lambda + c.c$, $\overline{\Sigma^+} \Sigma^+$, $\overline{\Sigma^-} \Sigma^-$ and $K_S K_S$. Results are presented from a study of about 32,000 {$K_S K_S X$} events obtained at several antiproton momenta in the regions of 1.45 and 1.7 GeV/c. The $\overline{p} p \to K_S K_S \eta$ cross sections extracted at these momenta constitute the first measurement of this reaction in flight and are broadly consistent with expectations of a phase-space extrapolation of branching ratios from annihilation at rest.

Exclusive measurements of the production of eta mesons in the p+p->p+p+eta reaction have been carried out at excess energies of 16 and 37 MeV above threshold. The deviations from phase space are dominated by the proton-proton final state interaction and this influences particularly the energy distribution of the eta meson. However, evidence is also presented at the higher energy for the existence of an anisotropy in the angular distributions of the eta meson and also of the final proton-proton pair, probably to be associated with D-waves in this system interfering with the dominant S-wave term. The sign of the eta angular anisotropy suggests that rho-exchange is important for this reaction.

Abstract

The JETSET (PS202) experiment at CERN-LEAR searches for hadronic resonances by means of in-flight antiproton-proton annihilations in the reaction p p → φφ . In order to obtain sufficient luminosity and good final-state mass resolution, this experiment uses an internal hydrogen-cluster jet target intersecting the LEAR antiproton beam. We report on the study of the reaction p p → 4K ± at 1.4 GeV / c incident p momentum, and we present the first experimental observation of a stro φφ signal in this reaction.

Abstract

Adiabatic cooling is shown to be a simple and effective method to cool many charged particles in a trap to very low temperatures. Up to 3 x 10(6) (p) over bar are cooled to 3.5 K-10(3) times more cold (p) over bar and a 3 times lower (p) over bar temperature than previously reported. A second cooling method cools (p) over bar plasmas via the synchrotron radiation of embedded (p) over bar (with many fewer (p) over bar than (p) over bar) in preparation for adiabatic cooling. No (p) over bar are lost during either process-a significant advantage for rare particles.

Abstract

Taking advantage of both the low-emittance proton-beam of the Cooler Synchrotron COSY and the high momentum precision of the COSY-11 detector system, the mass distribution of the eta' meson was measured with a resolution of 0.33 MeV/c^2 (FWHM), improving the experimental mass resolution by almost an order of magnitude with respect to previous results. Based on the sample of more than 2300 reconstructed pp --> pp eta' events the total width of the eta' meson was determined to be 0.226 +- 0.017(stat.) +- 0.014(syst.) MeV/c^2., 4 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The upper limit of the total cross section for the $\mathit{pn}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathit{pn}{\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ reaction has been determined near the kinematical threshold in the excess energy range from 0 to 24 MeV. The measurement was performed using the COSY-11 detector setup, a deuteron cluster target, and the proton beam of COSY with a momentum of 3.35 GeV$/c$. The energy dependence of the upper limit of the cross section was extracted exploiting the Fermi momenta of nucleons inside the deuteron. Comparison of the determined upper limit of the ratio ${R}_{{\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}}=\ensuremath{\sigma}(\mathit{pn}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathit{pn}{\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}})/\ensuremath{\sigma}(\mathit{pp}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathit{pp}{\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}})$ with the corresponding ratio for $\ensuremath{\eta}$-meson production does not favor the dominance of the ${N}^{*}(1535)$ resonance in the production process of the ${\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ meson and suggests nonidentical production mechanisms for $\ensuremath{\eta}$ and ${\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ mesons.

A comparison of the close-to-threshold total cross section for the eta prime production in pp --> pp eta prime and pn --> pn eta prime reactions constitutes a tool to investigate the eta prime meson structure and the reaction mechanism in the channels of isospin I=0 and I=1 and may provide insight into the flavour-singlet (perhaps also into gluonium) content of the eta prime meson. Abstract

ATRAP has made many important improvements since CERN's Antiproton Decelerator (AD) was restarted in 2006. These include substantial increases in the number of positrons (e+) and antiprotons (Pbars) used to make antihydrogen (Hbar) atoms, a new technique for loading electrons (e−) that are used to cool Pbars and e+, implementation of a completely new, larger and more robust apparatus in our second experimental zone and the inclusion of a quadrupole Ioffe trap intended to trap the coldest Hbar atoms produced. Using this new apparatus we have produced large numbers of Hbar atoms within a Penning trap that is located within this quadrupole Ioffe trap using a new technique which shows promise for producing even colder atoms. These observed Hbar atoms resolve a debate about whether positrons and antiprotons can be brought together to form atoms within the divergent magnetic fields of a quadrupole Ioffe trap.

Abstract

We summarise measurements of the COSY-11 collaboration concerning the excitation functions of the near threshold pseudoscalar meson production in the proton-proton interaction. The results are discussed in the context of the meson-nucleon and hyperon-nucleon interactions. We conclude that the $\eta$-proton interaction is significantly stronger than the eta'-proton interaction. Abstract

Measurements of {eta} meson production in proton-deuteron collisions have been performed using the COSY-11 facility at COSY (Juelich). Results on total and differential cross sections for the pd{yields}{sup 3}He{eta} reaction are presented at five excess energies between Q=5.0 and Q=40.6 MeV. The angular distributions show a transition from an almost isotropic emission close to threshold to a highly anisotropic distribution at higher excess energies. The total cross sections reveal a strong {eta}-{sup 3}He final state interaction, corresponding to a scattering length of vertical bar real(a) vertical bar=(4.2{+-}0.5) fm and (a)=(0.4{+-}1.9) fm.

Abstract

Measurements of the analyzing power for the pp -> pp eta reaction have been performed at excess energies of Q=10 and 36 MeV. The determined analyzing power is essentially consistent with zero, implying dominance of the s wave at both excess energies. The angular dependence of the analyzing power, combined with the isospin dependence of the total cross section for the eta meson production in nucleon-nucleon collisions, reveal that the excitation of the nucleon to the S-11(1535) resonance is predominantly due to the exchange of the pi meson between the colliding nucleons.

Abstract

Antiprotons ((p) over bar) remain confined in a Penning trap, in sufficient numbers to form antihydrogen ((H) over bar) atoms via charge exchange, when the radial field of a quadrupole Ioffe trap is added. This first demonstration with (p) over bar suggests that quadrupole Ioffe traps can be superimposed upon (p) over bar and e(+) traps to attempt the capture of (H) over bar atoms as they form, contrary to conclusions of previous analyses.

Abstract

The low emittance and small momentum spread of the proton and deuteron beams of the Cooler Synchrotron COSY combined with the high mass resolution of the COSY-11 detection system permit to study the creation of mesons in the nucleon-nucleon interaction down to the fraction of MeV with respect to the kinematical threshold. At such small excess energies, the ejectiles possess low relative momenta and are predominantly produced with the relative angular momentum equal to zero. Taking advantage of these conditions we have performed investigations aiming to determine the mechanism of the production of eta and eta' mesons in the collision of hadrons as well as the hadronic interaction of these mesons with nucleons and nuclei. In this proceedings we address the ongoing studies of the spin and isospin dependence for the production of the eta and eta' mesons in free and quasi-free nucleon-nucleon collisions. New results on the spin observables for the vec(p)p --> pp eta reaction, combined with the previously determined total cross section isospin dependence, reveal a statistically significant indication that the excitation of the nucleon to the S11(1535) resonance, the process which intermediates the production of the eta meson in the nucleon-nucleon interactions, is predominantly due to the exchange of the pi meson between the colliding nucleons., Invited talk at MESON 2006: 9th International Workshop on Meson Production, Properties and Interactions, Cracow, Poland, 9-13 Jun 2006

Abstract

Measurements on the eta meson production in proton-deuteron collisions have been performed using the COSY-11 facility at COSY Juelich. Here we present preliminary results on total and differential cross sections for the pd --> 3He eta reaction at five excess energies between Q = 5.1 and Q = 40.6 MeV. The obtained angular distributions for the emitted eta mesons in the center of mass system expose a transition from an almost isotropic emission to a highly anisotropic distribution. Abstract

A comparison of the close‐to‐threshold total cross sections for the η′ meson production in both the pp → ppη′ and pn → pnη′ reactions should provide insight into the flavour‐singlet (perhaps also into gluonium) content of the η′ meson and the relevance of quark‐gluon or hadronic degrees of freedom in the creation process. The excitation function for the reaction pp → ppη′ has been already established. At present, experimental investigations of the quasi‐free pn → pnX reactions are carried out at the COSY‐11 facility using a beam of stochastically cooled protons and the deuteron cluster target. A method of measurement and preliminary results from the test experiments of the pn → pnη reaction are presented in this report.

Abstract

Only our ATRAP Collaboration is yet able to accumulate and store 4.2 K antiprotons and positrons. The antiprotons come initially from the new Antiproton Decelerator facility at CERN. Good control of such cold antimatter plasmas is key to aspirations to produce and study antihydrogen atoms that are cold enough to confine by their magnetic moments. In the closest approach to cold antihydrogen realized to date, the cold positrons have been used to cool antiprotons, the first time that positron cooling has ever been observed. The Penning-loffe trap, one possibility for simultaneously confining antihydrogen and the cold ingredients from which it is formed, is introduced and discussed.

Abstract

Positrons are used to cool antiprotons for the first time. The oppositely charged positrons and antiprotons are first simultaneously accumulated in separate Penning trap volumes, and then are spatially merged in a nested Penning trap. The antiprotons cool until they reach a low relative velocity with respect to the cold positrons, the situation expected to be optimal for the production of cold antihydrogen.  2001 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract

We report on precision measurements of the cross sections for the reactions {bar p}p{yields}{bar {Lambda}}{Lambda}, {bar p}p{yields}{bar {Lambda}}{Sigma}{sup 0}, and {bar p}p{yields}{bar {Sigma}}{sup 0}{Lambda} in the region below 5 MeV excess kinetic energy above reaction threshold. For the {bar p}p{yields}{bar {Lambda}}{Lambda} measurement, the data represent a third and definitive scan through the threshold region by this experiment. Improvements in the detector system and analysis techniques, coupled with greatly increased statistics, have negated the question of the existence of a near-threshold resonance as had been indicated in our earlier, lower-statistics studies. The high statistics permit the first extraction of the polarization information at these low energies. We also report the first measurement of the cross section for the complementary reactions {bar p}p{yields}{bar {Lambda}}{Sigma}{sup 0}+c.c. at excess energies up to 2.5 MeV. This allows a comparison of the onset of {bar {Lambda}}{Lambda} production to that of {bar {Lambda}}{Sigma}{sup 0} and {bar {Sigma}}{sup 0}{Lambda}. The data show no evidence for near-threshold resonance structures in either reaction channel. Further, the {bar p}p{yields}{bar {Lambda}}{Sigma}{sup 0}+c.c. reactions exhibit a larger P-wave fraction close to threshold compared to {bar p}p{yields}{bar {Lambda}}{Lambda}.

Abstract

The CPT theorem predicts the same properties of matter and antimatter, however, in the nearby Universe, we observe a huge imbalance of matter and antimatter. Therefore, it is intriguing to measure the properties of particles and antiparticles in order to contribute to an explanation of this phenomena. In this article, we will describe the experimental efforts of the ATRAP Collaboration in order to test the CPT theorem using antihydrogen atoms.

Abstract

For producing polarized antiproton beams the so called spin filter method is normally discussed. The method has been proven by the FILTEX collaboration with a proton beam and detailed studies are presently performed by the PAX collaboration at COSY. A well known source for polarized antiprotons is the antilambda decay. It was used in the only experiment with polarized antiprotons so far at FERMILAB. Furthermore the antiproton production process itself, if showing polarization, would be by far the simplest and best way to get polarized beams because one could use the existing antiproton facility. Up to now production has never been investigated in detail.

Abstract

In another contribution at this conference the PS185 threshold decay spectrometer was presented. Beside other observables the polarization has been analyzed independently in the \( \bar pp \to \bar \Lambda \Lambda \) reaction for the kinematically correlated \( \Lambda \prime s{\text{ and }}\bar \Lambda \prime s. \) An apparent difference would signal a CP violating effect in the weak decay parameters a, since CP conservation requires zero for the relative quantity $$ {\text{A = }}\left( {a_\Lambda P_\Lambda + a_{\bar \Lambda } P_{\bar \Lambda } } \right){\text{ / }}\left( {a_\Lambda P_\Lambda - a_{\bar \Lambda } P_{\bar \Lambda } } \right). $$

Abstract

Preliminary results of recent measurements of the near threshold eta meson production in the dp-->dp eta reaction are presented. The experiment was performed at the COSY-Juelich accelerator with the use of the COSY-11 detection system. Data were taken for three values of deuteron beam momenta corresponding to excess energies of 3.2, 6.1 and 9.2 MeV.
