Abstract

With the discovery of non-zero value of $\theta_{13}$ mixing angle, the next generation of long-baseline neutrino (LBN) experiments offers the possibility of obtaining statistically significant samples of muon and electron neutrinos and anti-neutrinos with large oscillation effects. In this document we intend to highlight the importance of Near Detector facilities in LBN experiments to both constrain the systematic uncertainties affecting oscillation analyses but also to perform, thanks to their close location, measurements of broad benefit for LBN physics goals. Abstract

The EUROnu project has studied three possible options for future, high intensity neutrino oscillation facilities in Europe. The first is a Super Beam, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of pions created by bombarding targets with a 4 MW proton beam from the CERN High Power Superconducting Proton Linac. The far detector for this facility is the 500 kt MEMPHYS water Cherenkov, located in the Frejus tunnel. The second facility is the Neutrino Factory, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of mu(+) and mu(-) beams in a storage ring. The far detector in this case is a 100 kt magnetized iron neutrino detector at a baseline of 2000 km. The third option is a Beta Beam, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of beta emitting isotopes, in particular He-6 and Ne-18, also stored in a ring. The far detector is also the MEMPHYS detector in the Frejus tunnel. EUROnu has undertaken conceptual designs of these facilities and studied the performance of the detectors. Based on this, it has determined the physics reach of each facility, in particular for the measurement of CP violation in the lepton sector, and estimated the cost of construction. These have demonstrated that the best facility to build is the Neutrino Factory. Abstract

We present our study of the renormalization of the chromomagnetic operator, ${\mathcal{O}}_{\mathrm{CM}}$, which appears in the effective Hamiltonian describing $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}S=1$ transitions in and beyond the Standard Model. We have computed, perturbatively to one loop, the relevant Green's functions with two (quark-quark) and three (quark-quark-gluon) external fields, at nonzero quark masses, using both the lattice and dimensional regularizations. The perturbative computation on the lattice is carried out using the maximally twisted-mass action for the fermions, while for the gluons we employed the Symanzik improved gauge action for different sets of values of the Symanzik coefficients. We have identified all the operators which can possibly mix with ${\mathcal{O}}_{\mathrm{CM}}$, including lower-dimensional and nongauge invariant operators, and we have calculated those elements of the mixing matrix which are relevant for the renormalization of ${\mathcal{O}}_{\mathrm{CM}}$. We have also performed numerical lattice calculations to determine nonperturbatively the mixings of the chromomagnetic operator with lower-dimensional operators, through proper renormalization conditions. For the first time, the $1/{a}^{2}$-divergent mixing of the chromomagnetic operator with the scalar density has been determined nonperturbatively with high precision. Moreover, the $1/a$-divergent mixing with the pseudoscalar density, due to the breaking of parity within the twisted-mass regularization of QCD, has been calculated nonperturbatively and found to be smaller than its one-loop perturbative estimate. The QCD simulations have been carried out using the gauge configurations produced by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration with ${N}_{f}=2+1+1$ dynamical quarks, which include in the sea, besides two light mass degenerate quarks, also the strange and charm quarks with masses close to their physical values.

We compute all relevant mixing coefficients to one loop in lattice perturbation theory this necessitates calculating both 2-point (quark-antiquark) and 3-point (gluon-quark-antiquark) Green's functions at nonzero quark masses. We use the twisted mass lattice formulation, with Symanzik improved gluon action. Abstract

We study a model based on the dihedral group D4 in which the dark matter is stabilized by the interplay between a remnant Z2 symmetry, of the same spontaneously broken non-abelian group, and an auxiliary Z2 introduced to eliminate unwanted couplings in the scalar potential. In the lepton sector the model is compatible with normal hierarchy only and predicts a vanishing reactor mixing angle. Since m1=0, we also have a simple prediction for the effective mass in terms of the solar angle. There also exists a large portion of the model parameter space where the upper bounds on lepton flavor violating processes are not violated. We incorporate quarks in the same scheme finding that a description of the CKM mixing matrix is possible and that semileptonic K and D decays mediated by flavour changing neutral currents are under control., Comment: 12 pages, model slightly modified adding one scalar field. Abstract

The observation of astrophysical neutrinos requires a detailed understanding of the atmospheric neutrino background. Since neutrinos are produced in meson decays together with a charged lepton, important constraints on this background can be obtained from the measurement of the atmospheric muon flux. Muons, however, can also be produced as mu+ mu- pairs by purely electromagnetic processes. We use the Z-moment method to study and compare the contributions to the atmospheric muon and neutrino fluxes from different sources (pi/K decay, charmed and unflavored hadron decay, and photon conversion into a muon pair). We pay special attention to the contribution from unflavored mesons (eta, eta', rho0, omega and phi). These mesons are abundant in air showers, their lifetimes are much shorter than those of charged pions or kaons, and they have decay branching ratios of order 10^-4 into final states containing a muon pair. Abstract

We study the contribution of $��_e \to ��_��\to ��\to ��$ transitions to the wrong-sign muon sample of the {\em golden} channel of the Neutrino Factory. Muons from tau decays are not really a background, since they contain information from the oscillation signal, and represent a small fraction of the sample. However, if not properly handled they introduce serious systematic error, in particular if the detector/analysis are sensitive to muons of low energy. This systematic effect is particularly troublesome for large $��_{13} \geq 1^\circ$ and prevents the use of the Neutrino Factory as a precision facility for large $��_{13}$. Such systematic error disappears if the tau contribution to the golden muon sample is taken into account. The fact that the fluxes of the Neutrino Factory are exactly calculable permits the knowledge of the tau sample due to the $��_e \to ��_��$ oscillation. We then compute the contribution to the muon sample arising from this sample {\em in terms of the apparent muon energy}. This requires the computation of a migration matrix $M_{ij}$ which describes the contributions of the tau neutrinos of a given energy $E_i$, to the muon neutrinos of an apparent energy $E_j$. We demonstrate that applying $M_{ij}$ to the data permits the full correction of the otherwise intolerable systematic error., 15 pages, 9 figures, minor changes to match the version to be published on JHEP

Abstract

Models with extra dimensions and the fundamental scale at the TeV could imply sign als in large neutrino telescopes due to gravitational scattering of cosmogenic neu trinos in the detection volume. Apart from the production of microscopic black hol es, extensively studied in the literature, we present gravity-mediated interactions at larger distances, that can be calculated in the e ikonal approximation. In these elastic processes the neutrino loses a small fracti on of energy to a hadronic shower and keeps going. Abstract

We study the measurement of the atmospheric neutrino oscillation parameters, $\theta_{23}$ and $\Delta m^2_{23}$, at the $\nu_\mu$ disappearance channel at three conventional beam facilities, the SPL, T2K-phase I and NO$\nu$A. These two parameters have been shown to be of crucial importance in the measurement of two of the unknowns of the PMNS mixing matrix, $\theta_{13}$ and the leptonic CP-violating phase $\delta$. In our analyis, the effect of the two discrete ambiguities, ${\rm sign}(\Delta m^2_{23})$ and ${\rm sign}(\tan 2 \theta_{23})$, is explicitly taken into account. We analyse also the $\nu_\mu$ disappearance channel at the Neutrino Factory, and combine it with the ``golden'' $\nu_e \to \nu_\mu$ and ``silver'' $\nu_e \to \nu_\tau$ appearance channels to study its impact on the measurement of $\theta_{13}$ and $\delta$. Eventually, we present the sensitivity of the four facilities to different observables: $\theta_{13}$, $\delta$, maximal $\theta_{23}$, the sign of the atmospheric mass difference, $s_{atm}$, and the $\theta_{23}$-octant, $s_{oct}$., Comment: 40 pages using epsfig; bibliography modified

Abstract

We analyse l W nu production at ILC, paying special attention to the role of the final lepton flavour and beam polarisation in the search for a new heavy neutrino N. We show that a sizeable coupling to the electron V_eN ~ 10^-2 is necessary to have an observable signal in any of the channels, despite the fact that the signal may be more visible in muon or tau final states. The non-observation of a heavy neutrino at ILC will improve the present upper bound on its mixing with the electron by more than one order of magnitude, V_eN < 0.007 for m_N between 200 and 400 GeV., 17 pages, 5 PS figures. A generation of neutrino experiments have established that neutrinos mix and probably have mass. The mixing phenomenon points to processes beyond those of the Standard Model, possibly at the Grand Unification energy scale. A extensive sequence of of experiments will be required to measure precisely all the parameters of the neutrino mixing matrix, culminating with the discovery and study of leptonic CP violation. As a first step, extensions of conventional pion/kaon decay beams, such as off-axis beams or low-energy super-beams, have been considered. These could yield first observations of $\nu_\mu \to \nu_e$ transitions at the atmospheric frequency, which have not yet been observed, and a first measurement of $\theta_{13}$. Experiments with much better flux control can be envisaged if the neutrinos are obtained from the decays of stored particles. One such possibility is the concept of beta beams provided by the decays of radioactive nuclei, that has been developed within the context of these studies. These would provide a pure (anti-)electron-neutrino beam of a few hundred MeV, and beautiful complementarity with a high-intensity, low-energy conventional beam, enabling experimental probes of T violation as well as CP violation. Ultimately, a definitive and complete set of measurements would offered by a Neutrino Factory based on a muon storage ring. This powerful machine offers the largest reach for CP violation, even for very small values of $\theta_{13}$. Finally, we also apply a refined statistical analysis of the simulated events based on the frequentist approach. We investigate the capability of the DUNE near detector (ND) to constrain nonstandard interaction parameters (NSIs) describing the production of neutrinos (ϵαβs) and their detection (ϵαβd). We show that the DUNE ND is able to reject a large portion of the parameter space allowed by DUNE far detector analyses and to set the most stringent bounds from accelerator neutrino experiments on |ϵμes,d| for wide intervals of the related phases. We also provide simple analytic understanding of our results as well as a numerical study of their dependence on the systematic errors, showing that the DUNE ND offers a clean environment to study source and detector NSIs.

Abstract

We consider the $\nu_\mu \to \nu_{\tau}$ appearance channel in the future Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) which offers a good statistics of the $\nu_{\tau}$ sample. In order to measure its impact on constraining the oscillation parameters, we consider several assumptions on the efficiency for $\nu_\tau$ charged-current signal events (with subsequent $\tau \to e$ decay) and the related backgrounds and study the effects of various systematic uncertainties. Two different neutrino fluxes have been considered, namely a CP-violation optimized flux and a $\nu_\tau$ optimized flux. Our results show that the addition of the $\nu_\mu \to \nu_{\tau}$ appearance channel does not reduce the current uncertainties on the standard 3-$\nu$ oscillation parameters while it can improve in a significant way the sensitivity to the Non-Standard Interaction parameter $|\epsilon_{\mu\tau}|$ and to the new mixing angle $\theta_{34}$ of a sterile neutrino model of the $3+1$ type., Comment: 27 pages, 12 figures. Abstract

The hypothesis of the decay of neutrino mass eigenstates leads to a substantial modification of the appearance and disappearance probabilities of flavor eigenstates. We investigate the impact on the standard oscillation scenario caused by the decay of the heaviest mass eigenstate $\nu_3$ (with a mass $m_3$ and a mean life $\tau_3$) to a sterile state in DUNE. We find that the lower bound of $5.1 \times 10^{-11}~s/eV$ at 90\% CL on the decay parameter $\tau_3/m_3$ can be set if the Neutral Current data are included in the analysis, thus providing the best long-baseline expected limit so far. We also show that the $\nu_\tau$ appearance channel would give only a negligible contribution to the decay parameter constraints. Our numerical results are corroborated by analytical formulae for the appearance and disappearance probabilities in vacuum (which is a useful approximation for the study of the invisible decay model) that we have developed up to the second order in the solar mass splitting and to all orders in the decay factor $t/\tau_3$., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures. the manuscript matches with the one published on Physics Journal G

Abstract

We analyze the phenomenological consequences of embedding a flavor symmetry based on the groups A and CP in a supersymmetric framework. We concentrate on the leptonic sector, where two different residual symmetries are assumed to be conserved at leading order for charged and neutral leptons. All possible realizations to generate neutrino masses at tree level are investigated. Sizable flavor violating effects in the charged lepton sector are unavoidable due to the non-universality of soft-breaking terms determined by the symmetry. We derive testable predictions for the neutrino spectrum, lepton mixing and flavor changing processes with non-trivial relations among observables.

Abstract

We analyse in details the phenomenological implications for lepton masses and mixing due to the breaking of the discrete symmetries A 5 and CP into the subgroups Z 2 × CP and Z 5 for the neutrino and charged-lepton sectors. The direct product of Z 2 and CP in the neutrino sector allows for a complete determination of masses, mixing and CP phases in terms of only four real parameters. Consequently, we derive accurate analytic expressions for the sum of the neutrino masses as well as the effective Majorana masses, m β and m β β , under different hypotheses for the flavon vevs. Finally, we compare our predictions with the exact numerical results obtained from the diagonalisation of the neutrino mass matrix and discuss their accuracy.

Abstract

We investigate the implications of non-standard interactions on neutrino oscillations in the OPERA experiment. In particular, we study the non-standard interaction parameter $\epsilon_{\mu\tau}$. We show that the OPERA experiment has a unique opportunity to reduce the allowed region for this parameter compared with other experiments such as the MINOS experiment, mostly due to the higher neutrino energies in the CNGS beam compared to the NuMI beam. We find that OPERA is mainly sensitive to a combination of standard and non-standard parameters and that a resulting anti-resonance effect could suppress the expected number of events. Furthermore, we show that running OPERA for five years each with neutrinos and anti-neutrinos would help in resolving the degeneracy between the standard parameters and $\epsilon_{\mu\tau}$.
