A close reading of some exegetical scholia to the first half of theOdysseyBook 5 will single out some features which ancient scholars found particularly relevant to the passage's literary interpretation: special attention will be paid to the rhetorical strategies of Hermes, Odysseus, and Calypso, as well as to the latter's definition as a woman subjugated by love, or else entirely rational. This will lead to reconsider aspects of Calypso's persona throughout antiquity and beyond, by looking at the various etymologies of her name, at her allegorical readings, and at part of herNachlebenin modern literature and art.
