Background: Residual herbicides are an important component in many weed control strategies. Their herbicidal activity depends on their fate in soil, with respect to the required concentration for weed control in space and time. In this study, the effect of weather conditions on sulfosulfuron fate in soil, following pre-planting incorporation, and the predicted control efficacy of Egyptian broomrape in tomato, were analyzed for two sites using simulations in Hydrus-1D modeling software. Simulated concentration was compared to measured data from field experiments., Results: Model evaluation against measured data from two fields, with weakly alkaline clay soils, showed high correlations between simulated and measured sulfosulfuron concentrations (r = 0.98 and 0.89). The ratio of measured to simulated concentration was relatively low (1.03) at the top 10-cm layer, in which the mean measured concentration was high (29.6 ng g -1 ). This ratio was higher (12.5) at the 30-60 cm depth, in which the mean measured concentration was lower (0.3 ng g -1 ). Simulations of sulfosulfuron fate in each site, using weather data from the years 2009 to 2019, revealed substantial variations in transport patterns. Thirty days after treatment, 16 out of the 22 years simulated for the two sites (11 at each site) resulted in concentrations lower than the critical value for Egyptian broomrape control throughout the soil profile. The data indicates that variation in sulfosulfuron fate is mainly due to differences in the cumulative precipitation. According to simulation results, cumulative precipitation above 20 or 10 mm during the first 10 or 20 days after treatment, respectively, is expected to reduce the efficiency of broomrape control., Conclusion: Considering weather effects when planning herbicide application could optimize herbicide use efficiency. Three sweet corn genotypes, two inbred lines (IBER001 and IBER002) and their hybrid (ER00X), differ in their phenotypic responses to several P450-metabolized herbicides, used in sweet corn, namely, foramsulfuron, iodosulfuron, rimsulfuron and tembotrione. Foramsulfuron is a sulfonylurea herbicide commonly formulated with the safener isoxadifen that is used for selective post-emergence weed control in corn. Our goal was to elucidate the mechanism of these genotypes' responses to foramsulfuron and safener isoxadifen and examine the heritability of those responses. IBER001 was sensitive to foramsulfuron+isoxadifen, with an ED 50 of 3.6gaiha -1 , while IBER002 and ER00X were tolerant with ED 50 values of 808 and 700gaiha -1 , respectively. ALS enzyme extracted from each of the different genotypes was equally sensitive to foramsulfuron. Pre-treatment with malathion, a known cytochrome P450 inhibitor, increased foramsulfuron injury in IBER002 and ER00X, but had no effect on those lines when isoxadifen was applied with the herbicide. Foramsulfuron-treated IBER001 was severely injured regardless of the presence of malathion and/or isoxadifen. Pre-treatment with malathion similarly increased the phytotoxicity of iodosulfuron+safener (mefenpyr) and rimsulfuron to the tolerant genotypes, but did not increase the level of injury caused by the tembotrione+isoxadifen treatment. Segregation of F2 and backcross progenies according to their responses to foramsulfuron+isoxadifen revealed a pattern of inheritance typical of a trait controlled by a single gene inheritance, with a recessive allele conferring sensitivity. Our results support the hypothesis that foramsulfuron selectivity is associated with P450 metabolism and that isoxadifen positively affects P450 activity. Background: Conyza spp. were the first broadleaf weeds reported to have evolved glyphosate resistance. Several mechanisms have been proposed for glyphosate resistance. In an effort to elucidate the mechanism of this resistance in Conyza bonariensis, possible target-site and non-target-site mechanisms were investigated in glyphosate-resistant (GR) C. bonariensis biotypes., Results: Using differential glyphosate applications and analyses of shikimate accumulation, we followed the herbicide effect in different plant organs and monitored the herbicide's apparent mobility. We found high shikimate levels in the roots and young leaves of glyphosate-sensitive (GS) plants, regardless of the site of application, whereas in GR plants, shikimate accumulated mainly in treated young leaves. 14 C-glyphosate studies, however, revealed the expected source-to-sink translocation pattern in both GS and GR plants. Sequencing of the appropriate EPSPS DNA fragments of GR and GS plants revealed no alteration at the Pro106 position., Conclusion: These data support the hypothesis that the glyphosate resistance of our C. bonariensis GR biotypes is associated with altered subcellular distribution of glyphosate, which keeps the herbicide sequestered away from the EPSPS target site in the chloroplast. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry., (© 2016 Society of Chemical Industry.)

Background: Conyza bonariensis and C. canadensis are troublesome weeds, particularly in fields with minimum tillage, on roadsides and in perennial crops. The distribution of these difficult-to-control species is further increased by the spread of glyphosate-resistant populations. A preliminary investigation has demonstrated the existence of various degrees of glyphosate tolerance/resistance in these populations, underscoring the need to examine the relationship between glyphosate efficacy and plant growth conditions., Results: In populations exposed to glyphosate at different temperatures, glyphosate tolerance increased linearly as the temperature was increased, whereas when grown under the same temperatures, they largely responded similarly to the herbicide. Furthermore, the sensitivity of plants to glyphosate decreased significantly with plant age and increased following temporal exposure to shading. Dose-response studies confirmed the glyphosate resistance of four C. bonariensis populations that were 8-30 times more resistant to glyphosate than the most glyphosate-sensitive population. These populations retained their characteristic glyphosate resistance even under unfavourable growth conditions., Conclusion: These findings indicate that the effect of glyphosate on both Conyza species is strongly linked to growing conditions. Subsurface drip irrigation supplies water directly to the root zone and is an efficient irrigation technology. One of the main challenges is preventing plant roots from clogging the drippers. With the aim of inhibiting root penetration, slow-release pendimethalin formulations based on its solubilization in micelles adsorbed and unadsorbed to clay were developed. In the past unadsorbed micelles were considered inadequate for slow release, because release was too fast. In contrast, the advantage of a two-mode release formulation, composed of adsorbed and unadsorbed micelles, is demonstrated. A bioassay to study pendimethalin leaching at a refined scale of 1-2 cm was developed and reduced leaching from the micelle-clay formulations in comparison to the commercial formulation (Stomp) was exhibited. In a greenhouse study the application of the formulations by injection into an irrigation system was extremely efficient with 0-10% root penetration in comparison to 100% penetration upon Stomp injection.

Background: In recent years, common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L.) populations from sugar beet fields in different European countries have responded as resistant to the as-triazinone metamitron. The populations have been found to have the same D1 point mutation as known for atrazine-resistant biotypes (Ser264 to Gly). However, pot experiments revealed that metamitron resistance is not as clear-cut as observed with triazine resistance in the past. The objectives of this study were to clarify the absorption, translocation and metabolic fate of metamitron in C. album., Results: Root absorption and foliar absorption experiments showed minor differences in absorption, translocation and metabolism of metamitron between the susceptible and resistant C. album populations. A rapid metabolism in the C. album populations was observed when metamitron was absorbed by the roots. The primary products of metamitron metabolism were identified as deamino-metamitron and metamitron-N-glucoside. PABA, known to inhibit the deamination of metribuzin, did not alter the metabolism of metamitron, and nor did the cytochrome P450 inhibitor PBO. However, inhibition of metamitron metabolism in the presence of the cytochrome P450 inhibitor ABT was demonstrated., Conclusion: Metamitron metabolism in C. album may act as a basic tolerance mechanism, which can be important in circumstances favouring this degradation pathway., (Copyright © 2011 Society of Chemical Industry.)

Background: Herbicide-resistant crop technology could provide new management strategies for the control of parasitic plants. Three herbicide-resistant oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) genotypes were used to examine the response of attached Cuscuta campestris Yuncker to glyphosate, imazamox and glufosinate. Cuscata campestris was allowed to establish on all oilseed rape genotypes before herbicides were applied., Results: Unattached seedlings of C. campestris, C. subinclusa Durand & Hilg. and C. gronovii Willd. were resistant to imazamox and glyphosate and sensitive to glufosinate, indicating that resistance initially discovered in C. campestris is universal to all Cuscuta species. Glufosinate applied to C. campestris attached to glufosinate-resistant oilseed rape had little impact on the parasite, while imazamox completely inhibited C. campestris growth on the imidazolinone-resistant host. The growth of C. campestris on glyphosate-resistant host was initially inhibited by glyphosate, but the parasite recovered and resumed growth within 3-4 weeks., Conclusion: The ability of C. campestris to recover was related to the quality of interaction between the host and parasite and to the resistance mechanism of the host. The parasite was less likely to recover when it had low compatibility with the host, indicating that parasite-resistant crops coupled with herbicide resistance could be highly effective in controlling Cuscuta., ((c) 2009 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.)

Herbicide-resistant plants can be generated by either traditional breeding procedures or genetic engineering. Analyses of plant responses to a newly developed herbicide or the tolerance level of a newly developed plant line to a given herbicide are based on various bioassays. Here, we describe several methods for quantitative measurements of plants' responses to propham application, as a model herbicide of the carbamate family. Dose-response assays include seed germination and analyses of shoot and root elongation on paper. To better reflect the natural interaction between the plant, the soil and the herbicide, a protocol for germination and root elongation on sand is described. Finally, a more sensitive bioassay is based on plant growth on agar medium. The described protocols are simple, reproducible and can be easily adopted for a variety of plant species and for various herbicides. Plants' response to a given herbicide can be determined within a few weeks.

Removal of anionic pollutants (imazaquin, sulfentrazone, sulfosulfuron) and neutral pollutants (alachlor, acetochlor, chlorotoluron, bromacil) from water by micelles preadsorbed on montmorillonite was studied. Micelles of octadecyltrimethylammonium and benzyldimethylhexadecylammonium (BDMHDA) were used. The micelle-clay systems (1% w/w) removed 87-99% of the pollutants from their water solutions containing 1-33 mg/L of herbicide. The nature of the headgroup of the organic cation, which forms the micelles, is critical. Desorption of imazaquin and acetochlor from 0.3% (w/w) suspension of BDMHDA-clay complex after 24 h was around 7% in the range of adsorbed amounts from 0.6 to 15.3 mg/g. These results indicate rather slow rates and small extents of release of pollutants from micelle-clay complexes. Column filters (25 cm) made of a mixture of quartz sand and BDMHDA micelle-clay complex at 100:1 w/w ratio removed at least 99% of above pollutants from initial solutions containing 10 mg/L; 99.5 and 97% of sulfosulfuron and alachlor were removed from their initial solutions containing 200 and 5 microg/L, respectively. These data indicate that micelle-clay complexes are very efficient for water purification from organic contaminants.

The molecular basis and mode of inheritance of resistance to ACCase-inhibiting herbicides were investigated in a biotype of Lolium rigidum Gaud that has been discovered in Israel. Dose-response experiments at the whole-plant level have revealed that the resistant biotype was more resistant (6.3- to 40-fold) than the susceptible wild-type to ACCase-inhibiting herbicides. A 276-bp genomic DNA encoding the carboxyltransferase domain within the chloroplastic ACCase from resistant and susceptible biotypes were amplified by PCR and analyzed. Sequence comparison revealed that a single isoleucine-to-leucine substitution differentiated ACCases from susceptible and resistant biotypes (corresponds to residue 1769 of wheat ACCase, Acc No AF029895). A PCR amplification of specific alleles (PASA) method was developed to detect the allele composition leading to isoleucine-leucine mutation. ACCase extracted from homozygote resistant, heterozygote and homozygote susceptible plants showed IC50 values of 25.8, 5.6 and 0.6 microM, respectively, suggesting that alteration in the ACCase is governed by a co-dominant gene. The inheritance studies confirmed that the resistance of L rigidum to ACCase-inhibiting herbicides is governed by a single, nuclear and co-dominant gene.

A new approach was developed for reducing leaching of herbicides and contamination of groundwater. Liposome-clay formulations of the anionic herbicides sulfometuron and sulfosulfuron were designed for slow release by incorporating the herbicide in positively charged vesicles of didodecyldimethylammonium (DDAB), which were adsorbed on the negatively charged clay, montmorillonite. Freeze fracture electron microscopy demonstrated the existence of DDAB vesicles and aggregated structures on external clay surfaces. X-ray diffraction results for DDAB with montmorillonite imply the existence of DDAB bilayers with an oblique orientation to the basal plane within the clay interlayer space at adsorbed amounts beyond the cation exchange capacity of the clay. Adding DDAB with sulfometuron or sulfosulfuron to montmorillonite yielded 95% or 83% adsorption of the herbicide at optimal ratios. Liposome-clay formulations exhibited slow release of the herbicides in water. Analytical measurements in soil columns demonstrated 2-10-fold reduction in leaching of the herbicides from liposome-clay formulations in comparison with commercial formulations. Percents of root growth inhibition of a test plant in the upper soil depths were severalfold higher for the liposome-clay formulations than for the commercial ones. Consequently, liposome-clay formulations of anionic herbicides can solve environmental and economical problems by reducing their leaching.

Interactions of the herbicide sulfentrazone with the cationic surfactants octadecyltrimethylammonium (ODTMA), hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA), and benzyldimethylhexadecylammonium (BDMHDA) have been studied for the design of slow-release formulations based on sulfentrazone adsorbed on a micelle-montmorillonite complex. Adsorbed amounts of sulfentrazone on ODTMA- and BDMHDA-montmorillonite complexes were 99.2-99.8% of that added, and desorption of herbicide in water during 24 h was low. After 10 washings in funnels with soil, only 2.6% of herbicide was released from ODTMA-montmorillonite formulations versus 100% release from the commercial formulation. The strong binding of sulfentrazone to micelles was confirmed by pH and spectroscopic measurements and was explained by the formation of ionic pairs between cationic surfactant and anionic herbicide. The ODTMA-clay and commercial formulations of sulfentrazone yield almost complete and 40% growth inhibition of green foxtail, respectively, at 700 g of active ingredient/ha. Hence, the slow release from micelle-clay formulations of sulfentrazone promotes its biological activity and reduces environmental contamination.

Slow release formulations of the anionic herbicide sulfosulfuron (SFS) were prepared by incorporating it in micelles of an organic cation octadecyltrimethylammonium, which adsorb on the clay-mineral montmorillonite. The fraction of SFS adsorbed on the micelle-clay complex reached 98%, whereas for monomer-clay complexes, its adsorption was insignificant. Fluorescence studies showed surface contact between the micelles and the clay surface. The rate of SFS release from the micelle-clay formulations in aqueous suspensions was slow (<1%, 72 h). Spraying SFS formulations on a thin soil layer in a funnel, followed by irrigations (50 mm), resulted in complete elution of SFS from the commercial formulation (dispersible granular) versus 4% from the micelle-clay formulation. A plant bioassay in Rehovot soil showed that these respective formulations yielded 23 and 65% of shoot growth inhibition of foxtail. Consequently, the slow release micelle-clay formulations of SFS yield significantly reduced leaching and enhanced biological activity, thus providing environmental and agricultural advantages.

Amaranthus blitoides S. Watson (prostrate pigweed) populations resistant to acetolactate synthase (ALS; EC 4.1.3.18)-inhibiting herbicides and triazines (SuR/TR) were found in Israel. The Ganot population was 6- to 790-fold more resistant to ALS inhibitors than the wild type due to an altered target site. Molecular analyses showed that the Ganot population was a mixture of two biotypes: (i) SuRA/TR in which domain A of the als gene differed in one nucleotide, resulting in substitution of Pro by Ser 188; (ii) SuRB/TR in which a mutation in domain B led to a substitution of Trp by Leu 569. The mutation in domain A resulted in resistance to all ALS inhibitors except imidazolinones, whereas the mutation in domain B led to resistance to all ALS inhibitors tested. SuRA/TR and SuRB/TR are multiple-resistant with an additional single mutation in the plastidic psbA gene that changes Ser 264 to Gly in the D1 protein, leading to triazine resistance. It is evident that plants within a population exposed to a similar selection pressure may show different patterns of cross-resistance due to three different point mutations. This unique phenomenon renders planning of rational weed management difficult or even impossible.

Ground water pollution due to herbicide leaching has become a serious environmental problem. Imazaquin [2-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)quinoline-3-carboxylic acid] is an herbicide used to control broadleaf weeds in legume crops. Imazaquin is negatively charged at the basic pH of calcareous soils and exhibits high leaching potential in soils. Our aim was to design formulation of imazaquin to reduce herbicide leaching. Imazaquin sorption on pillared clay (PC) and crystal violet (CV)-montmorillonite complexes was studied. The CV-montmorillonite complexes become positively charged with adsorption of CV above the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of montmorillonite, and thus can sorb imazaquin. The Langmuir equation provides a good fit to isotherms of imazaquin sorption on PC and CV-montmorillonite complexes, but for charged complexes an equation that combines electrostatics with specific binding was preferred. Maximal imazaquin sorption was 17.3 mmol kg-1 for PC and 22.2 mmol kg-1 for CV-montmorillonite complexes. The extents of imazaquin desorption into water were 21% for PC and 5% for CV-clay complexes. The presence of anions decreased imazaquin sorption on both sorbents in the sequence phosphate > acetate > sulfate. Reduction of imazaquin sorption by the anions and the extent of its desorption in electrolyte solutions were higher for PC than for CV-clay complexes. Leaching of imazaquin from CV-montmorillonite formulations through soil (Rhodoxeralf) columns was two times less than from PC formulations and four times less than that of technical imazaquin. The CV-montmorillonite complexes at a loading above the CEC appear to be suitable for preparation of organo-clay-imazaquin formulations that may reduce herbicide leaching significantly.

The design and tests of slow-release formulations of sulfometuron (SFM), an anionic sulfonylurea herbicide, are described. The formulations are based on incorporation of the herbicide in octadecyltrimethylammonium (ODTMA) micelles, which adsorb on a clay mineral, montmorillonite. An optimization of herbicide/micelle clay ratios yielded high adsorption of SFM (95%), and at a 1% (w/w) water suspension only 0.5% of the adsorbed SFM was released at times varying from hours to 9 days. An analytical test in Seville soil showed that under excessive irrigation (400 mm) 100% of the commercial formulation leached, whereas the micelle-clay formulations showed only 50-65% elution. A plant bioassay in Rehovot soil showed that the commercial dispersible granule formulation (Oust, 75% ai sulfometuron methyl) yielded only 23% root elongation inhibition at the top 5 cm of the soil, whereas complete inhibition was achieved with the micelle-clay formulation. The detected concentration of SFM for the micelle-clay formulation at a depth of 15-20 cm was half of that detected for the commercial one, indicating a reduction in leaching when applying the micelle-clay formulation. A 10-fold reduction in the applied dose of SFM in the micelle-clay formulations resulted in good herbicidal activity of 60-87% inhibition. These characteristics make the new formulation promising from the environmental and economic points of view.

The aim of this study was to understand the interactions between alkylammonium cations present as monomers and micelles and a clay mineral, montmorillonite, to develop slow release formulations of anionic herbicides, such as sulfometuron (SFM) whose leaching in soils is an environmental and economic problem. In the proposed formulation the herbicide is incorporated in positively charged micelles of quaternary amine cations, which in turn adsorb on the negatively charged clay. The adsorption of hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA) and octadecyltrimethylammonium (ODTMA) on montmorillonite was studied above and below their critical micelle concentrations (CMC). At concentrations above the CMC, the loading exceeded the clay's cation exchange capacity (CEC) and indicated higher affinity of the cation with the longer alkyl chain. An adsorption model could adequately simulate adsorption at concentrations below the CMC, and yield fair predictions for the effect of ionic strength. The model indicated that above the CMC adsorbed micelles contributed significantly to the amount of ODTMA adsorbed. Evidence for adsorption of ODTMA micelles on montmorillonite was provided by X-ray diffraction, freeze-fracture electron microscopy, and dialysis bag measurements. SFM was not adsorbed directly on the clay mineral, and adsorbed at low levels, when the organic cation was adsorbed as monomers. In contrast, a large fraction of SFM adsorbed on the clay mineral when incorporated in micelles that adsorbed on the clay.

This study aimed to design ecologically acceptable formulations of acetochlor by adsorbing it on montmorillonite exchanged by a small organic cation, phenyltrimethylammonium (PTMA). Adsorption of acetochlor on the clay mineral exchanged with different organic cations and its release from these complexes were determined by GC and modeled by Langmuir equation. Interactions between acetochlor molecules and the exchanged organic cation on the clay surface were studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Leaching of acetochlor in soil was determined by a bioassay using a column technique and Setaria viridis as a test plant. The adsorbed amounts of acetochlor on montmorillonite exchanged by PTMA at a loading of 0.5 mmol/g of clay were higher than at a loading up to the cation-exchange capacity, i.e., 0.8 mmol/g, and were higher than obtained by using a clay mineral exchanged by other organic cations. Preloading montmorillonite by PTMA at 0.5 mmol/g yielded maximal shifts of the infrared peaks of the herbicide. The above formulation of acetochlor yielded slow release in water and showed improved weed control in field and greenhouse experiments in comparison with the commercial formulation. The PTMA-clay formulation of acetochlor maintained herbicidal activity in the topsoil and yielded the most significant reduction in herbicide leaching and persistence under field conditions. The application of this formulation can minimize the risk to groundwater and can reduce the applied rates.

Photostable formulations of the herbicide norflurazon [4-chloro-5-(methylamino)-2-(alpha,alpha, alpha-trifluoro-m-tolyl)pyridazin-3-(2H)-one] were achieved by adsorbing it on pillared clay or on montmorillonite preadsorbed with the organic cation thioflavin T (TFT). Diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectra showed the existence of strong interactions between the aromatic moieties of preadsorbed TFT and the herbicide, particularly after irradiation. The photostabilization of norflurazon obtained with TFT-clay was mainly due to energy transfer from the herbicide to the organic cation via pi-pi interactions. An additional mechanism is the lower production of radicals from the clay when the clay mineral surface is covered with the organic cation. These radicals are responsible for the enhanced photodegradation observed when norflurazon was irradiated in the presence of untreated montmorillonite.

This study aimed to design formulations of hydrophobic herbicides, alachlor and metolachlor, by adsorbing them on the clay mineral montmorillonite preadsorbed by the small organic cation phenyltrimethylammonium (PTMA). An adsorption model that considers electrostatics and specific binding and the possibility of cation adsorption above the cation exchange capacity (CEC) could explain and yield predictions for PTMA adsorption in the presence of NaCl concentrations from 0 to 500 mM. Adsorption of alachlor and metolachlor from aqueous solution on a clay mineral preadsorbed by PTMA was determined by GC and modeled by Langmuir equation. Herbicide interactions with the organoclay were studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Leaching of herbicides was determined by a bioassay using a column technique and Setaria viridis as a test plant. The adsorbed amounts of alachlor and metolachlor on montmorillonite preadsorbed by PTMA at a loading of 0. 5 mol/kg (Mont-PTMA0.5) were higher than at a loading up to the CEC, that is, 0.8 mol/kg, and were higher than those obtained by using several other organic cations. Herbicide formulations based on Mont-PTMA0.5 yielded the largest shifts of the infrared peaks of the herbicides. These formulations based on Mont-PTMA0.5 gave slower release and showed improved weed control in comparison with formulations based on other organoclays. These formulations maintained herbicidal activity in the topsoil and yielded the most significant reduction in herbicide leaching.

The study aimed to reduce leaching of the hydrophobic herbicide norflurazon (4-chloro-5-methylamino-2-(alpha,alpha, alpha)-trifluoro-m-tolylpyridazin-3-(2H)-one) by adsorbing it on clays or organo-clays. The surface of the clay mineral montmorillonite was modified from hydrophilic to hydrophobic by preadsorbing it with organic cations, of which thioflavin-T (TFT) at a loading corresponding to (5)/(8) of the cation-exchange capacity of the clay mineral yielded the highest affinity of adsorption of norflurazon. Pillared clay (PC) used without organic cations exhibited enhanced affinity for norflurazon adsorption, much higher than that of montmorillonite or sepiolite. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) results showed interactions between aromatic moieties of preadsorbed TFT and the herbicide. Stronger interaction of the herbicide with a clay mineral or organo-clay corresponded to its slower release. Formulations prepared on the basis of montmorillonite-TFT and PC were more effective in reducing herbicide leaching in soil columns in comparison to the commercial formulation, whereas the herbicidal efficiencies were comparable.

delta-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) is the obligatory precursor for tetrapyrroles and for chlorophylls in plants. Under illumination, these photosensitizers generate singlet oxygen, thus causing bleaching and death of treated tissues. We have examined whether superoxide is involved in the mode of action of ALA and whether SOD provides protection. Bean genotypes with similar carotenoid content but differing in SOD activity and cucumber seedlings were used throughout. Cucumber plants treated with 10 mM ethanolamine (EA) prior to ALA, had higher levels of chlorophyll fluorescence and lower values of electrolyte leakage than control. Bean cultivars with high SOD activity were considerably more tolerant to membrane damage caused by ALA than those with low SOD activity. SOD activity was greatly reduced in cucumber leaves treated with diethyldithiocarbamate (DDTC). Electrolyte leakage was markedly increased and chlorophyll fluorescence values were significantly lower in DDTC and ALA treated tissues as compared with those treated with ALA only. The results indicate that superoxide is involved in the toxicity caused by ALA and that, by breeding for high SOD activity, resistance to ALA can be achieved, thus allowing the use of ALA as a selective herbicide in the field.

Abstract: Many moth sex pheromone blends are derived from fatty acids and their production is regulated by a Pheromone Biosynthesis Activating Neuropeptide (PBAN). In prior work we showed that the herbicide Diclofop-acid, an acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase (ACCase) inhibitor, inhibits PBAN-induced sex pheromone production in vitro. In this work we extend our study showing that several other herbicides, belonging to the 2-aryloxyphenoxypropionate (‘FOP’) and the cyclohexandione-oxime (‘DIM’) families significantly inhibit pheromone production by adult females whilst survival is unaffected by treatment. Enzyme activity in vitro and kinetic analysis revealed a K m of 0.35μM with K i values of 0.1 and 0.28μM due to Tralkoxydim and Diclofop inhibition, respectively. Inhibitory activity on PBAN-induced pheromone production by all herbicides tested revealed a potency order: Tralkoxydim>Clodinafop>Cycloxidim>Haloxyfop>Diclofop>Fenoxaprop>Fluazifop>Quizalofop, Quizalofop being inactive. Differences in inhibition efficiencies may be attributed to different binding sites on the enzyme or to the polarity and solubility of these compounds. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Summary The response of Cuscuta campestris Yuncker, a non-specific above-ground holoparasite, to amino acid biosynthesis inhibitor (AABI) herbicides, was compared with other resistant and sensitive plants in dose–response assays carried out in Petri dishes. Cuscuta campestris was found to be much more resistant to all AABI herbicides tested. The I[sub 50] value of C. campestris growth inhibition by glyphosate was eightfold higher than that of transgenic, glyphosate-resistant cotton (RR-cotton). The I[sub 50] value for C. campestris shoot growth inhibition by sulfometuron was above 500 μ M, whereas that of sorghum roots was only 0.004 μ M. Cuscuta campestris exposed to glyphosate gradually accumulated shikimate, confirming herbicide penetration into the parasite and interaction with an active form of the target enzyme of the herbicide, 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase. More than half of the C. campestris plants associated with transgenic, glyphosate-resistant sugarbeet (RR-sugarbeet) treated with glyphosate or with transgenic, sulfometuron-resistant tomato (SuR-tomato) treated with sulfometuron recovered and resumed regular growth 20–30 days after treatment. New healthy stems developed, followed by normal flowering and seed setting. The results of the current study demonstrate the unique capacity of C. campestris to tolerate high rates of AABI. Mechanical incorporation of a tank mixture of trifluralin in combination with fluometuron, diron or prometryne in the soil to a depth of 10 cm protected emerging cotton from the damage caused by these herbicides in the absence of trifluralin. The incorporated tank mixtures, which were activated by sprinkler irrigation, controlled weeds which were tolerant to trifluralin alone. The different reaction of weeds and cotton to the soil-incorporated herbicide mixtures corresponded to the reaction of their root systems to trifluralin. Weeds whose root system was shortened significantly by trifluralin were sensitive to the tank-mixed, soil-incorporated herbicides. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of commercially available formulations of metolachlor has resulted in its leaching and migration to water sources. Formulations of metolachlor designed to reduce its leaching in soil have been prepared by adding the herbicide dissolved in an organic solvent or in water to organo-clay complexes. Best formulations were made when the organo-clay complex was formed by adsorbing the monovalent organic cations benzyltrimethylammonium (BTMA) or benzyltriethylammonium (BTEA) onto sodium montmorillonite (Mont) at 0.5 or 0.8 mole kg-1 clay. Adsorption of metolachlor to organo-clays followed the sequence Mont-BTMA 0.5 > Mont-BTMA 0.8 > Mont-BTEA 0.8 > Mont-BTEA 0.5 > Mont.Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis demonstrated the occurrence of shifts of several peaks of adsorbed metolachlor relative to thefree herbicide, indicating the existence of strong interactions between metolachlor molecules and the organo-clay surface. Leaching studies employing organo-clay and commercial formulations were carried outunder greenhouse and field conditions. Metolachlor applied as organo-clay formulations leached less than the commercial formulation. Organo-clay formulations prepared by adding the herbicide as a water solution showed less leaching in the soil profile than those made by using organic solvent. Under greenhouse conditions, the herbicidal activity of organo-clay formulations was similar to that of the commercial one. Under field conditions, leaching from Mont-BTMA 0.5-metolachlor was less than that from the commercial formulation, demonstrating theenvironmental and agricultural advantages of the organo-clay formulations of metolachlor.
