Abstract: Mass and energy distributions of fission-like fragments obtained in the reactions with 26Mg, 36S and 58Fe ions leading to the formation of the Z=108 composite nucleus are reported. From the analysis of TKE distributions for symmetric fragment it was found that at energies below the Coulomb barrier the bimodal fission of 274Hs, formed in the reaction 26Mg+248Cm, is observed, while in the reaction 36S+238U at these energies the main part of the symmetric fragments arises from the quasifission process. At energies above the Coulomb barrier the fusion-fission is a main process leading to the formation of symmetric fragment for the both reactions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We present the results of experiments on measuring the charges of heavy ions from Rn (Z = 86) to Og (Z = 118) in rarefied hydrogen performed at the DGFRS and DGFRS-2 separators. Two formulae are proposed that can be used to calculate the charges of ions in H 2 and which take into account the influence of the shell structure of atoms on the charge value. The accuracy of estimating the charge of ions of superheavy atoms was measured to be 2%. The charges of Ra, Th, and No ions were measured at a hydrogen pressure from 0.5 to 3.3 mbar, which allowed us to evaluate the effect of H 2 density on the charge value. A formula is proposed to account for the effect of gas density when performing experiments at different gas pressures. It is shown that the results of experiments performed at different separators DGFRS and DGFRS-2 are in good agreement with each other. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Within the past 15 years, the recoil separator VASSILISSA has been used for the investigations of evaporation residues produced in complete fusion reactions induced by heavy ions. The study of decay properties and formation of cross-sections of the isotopes of elements 110, 112 and 114 was performed using high-intensity 48Ca beams and 232Th, 238U, 242Pu targets. For further experiments aimed at the synthesis of the superheavy element isotopes (Z⩾110) with the use of intense 48Ca extracted beams, improvements in the ion optical system of the separator and the focal plane detector system have been made.
