Abstract Supercritical heat transfer mechanisms and heat transfer correlations are firstly reviewed in present paper. The heat transfer characteristics of S-CO 2 in circumferentially non-uniform heated vertical upward flow are then numerically studied and the fundamental mechanisms are discussed. The abnormal heat transfer for S-CO 2 is believed to be caused by the comprehensive effect of thermophysical property variations. For S-CO 2 with non-uniform heating and large mass flow rate, the enhanced heat transfer is mainly related to the large specific heat in the near wall region while the deteriorated heat transfer is dominated by the thickening viscous sublayer induced by the viscosity increase. Besides, the buoyancy effect induced by the density variation is still prominent to axial velocity distribution even in the forced convection. Finally a new correlation with higher accuracy is developed for S-CO 2 circumferentially average heat transfer by introducing the correction parameters of viscosity, specific heat, axial flow-acceleration and non-uniform heat flux. The supercritical-CO 2 (S–CO 2) cooler is one of the main components in S–CO 2 power system. This work aims at revealing the cooling mechanism of S–CO 2 under wide working conditions to assist the S–CO 2 cooler design. The pseudo-condensation is proposed with the analogy between supercritical cooling and subcritical condensation. From the pseudo-condensation and the traditional turbulent field analysis, the specific heat is found to be the dominant parameter for the enhanced heat transfer in S–CO 2 cooling. The disappearing of enhanced cooling heat transfer, in the view of pseudo-condensation, is mainly due to the thickening of pseudo liquid film, which is dominated by the gravity force, inertial force and interfacial force in low mass flux flow while the gravity force effect is negligible in high mass flux flow. However, from the turbulent field analysis, the disappearing of enhanced cooling heat transfer is mainly caused by the thickening boundary layer due to the local increase in density and viscosity in addition to the decrease in specific heat. Finally, based on the S–CO 2 cooling mechanism, two correlations for predicting heat transfer are proposed and evaluated. Printed circuit heat exchangers (PCHEs) are widely used as recuperators in the supercritical carbon dioxide (S-CO2) Brayton cycle design. The variation of heat sources will have a great impact on the heat transfer effect of the recuperator. It is of interest to study the fast calculation of flow and heat transfer performance of PCHEs under different operating conditions to obtain the optimal comprehensive performance and provide guidance for the operation control strategy analysis. Herein, a fast calculation method is established through a one-dimensional model of a PCHE based on Modelica. The effects of working medium mass flow rate and inlet temperature on the flow and heat transfer process are analyzed from the three aspects of heat transfer rate, flow pressure drop, and comprehensive performance, and the mass flow rate matching optimization is realized. The results show that increased mass flow rate increases heat transfer rate and flow pressure drop. The efficiency evaluation coefficient (EEC) has a maximum value at which the mass flow rate values of the cold and hot channels are best matched, and the comprehensive performance is optimal. When the mass flow rate of the heat channel is 4.8 g/s, the maximum EEC is 1.42, corresponding to the mass flow rate of the cold channel, 4.2 g/s. Compared with the design condition, the heat transfer rate increases by 62.1%, and the total pump power increases by 14.2%. When the cold channel inlet temperature increases, EEC decreases rapidly, whereas EEC increases when the hot channel inlet temperature increases. Using supercritical CO2 as a heat transfer fluid in microchannel receivers is a promising alternative for tower concentrating solar power plants. In this paper, the heat transfer and flow characteristics of supercritical CO2 in microchannels at high temperature are investigated by numerical simulations. The effects of microchannel structure, mass flow rate, heat flux, pressure, inlet temperature and radiation are analyzed and discussed. The results show that higher mass flow rate obtains poorer heat transfer performance with larger flow resistance of supercritical CO2 in microchannels at high temperature. The fluid and wall temperatures, average heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop all increase nearly linearly with the increases in heat flux and inlet temperature in the high-temperature region. Moreover, high pressure contributes to great hydraulic performance with approximate thermal performance. The effect of radiation on thermal performance is more pronounced than that on hydraulic performance. Furthermore, the optimized structures of inlet and outlet headers, as well as those of the multichannel in the microchannels, are proposed to obtain good temperature uniformity in the microchannels with relatively low pressure drop. The results given in the current study can be conducive to the design and application of microchannel receivers with supercritical CO2 as a heat transfer fluid in the third generation of concentrating solar power plants. The present study focused on the analysis of a new geometrical modification of the conventional zig-zag channel for Printed Circuit Heat Exchangers. The research was carried out using OpenFOAM and Salome software, which were used for the CFD analysis and the construction of the computational domain. For the development of the study, three types of channel geometries were defined: a modified zig-zag channel, a conventional zig-zag channel, and a straight channel. The results show that the modified zig-zag channel achieves better thermal hydraulic performance compared to that of the conventional zig-zag channel, evidenced by a 7.6% increase in the thermal performance factor. The modified zig-zag channel proposed in the research caused a 1.5% reduction of the power consumption of supercritical Brayton cycle compressors. Additionally, the modified zig-zag channel achieves a maximum efficiency of 49.1%, which is 1.5% higher compared to that of the conventional zig-zag channel. The above results caused a 20.9% reduction of the operating costs of the supercritical Brayton cycle. This leads to a 5.9% decrease in the cost associated with using the PCHE compared to that of the conventional zig-zag channel. In general, the new geometric characteristics proposed for the conventional zig-zag channel minimize the high loss of the hydraulic performance without significantly compromising its heat transfer capacity. The geometric analysis of the proposed new zig-zag channel geometry was limited to evaluating the influence of the bend angle of 20–30°. Therefore, a more detailed geometric optimization process involving other geometric parameters of the channel is still needed. Future research will be focused on addressing this approach. • The seriousness of the HTD problems in large-diameter tubes is highlighted experimentally. • SST k-ω model for S-CO 2 heat transfer prediction is experimentally validated within ±15% error range. • HTD mechanism is revealed by comprehensive comparisons between simulations and experiments. • Pseudo-nucleate boiling concept is proposed to further develop the pseudo-boiling theory for S-CO 2. • Conical strips insert can prevent HTD problems and achieve high PEC of 1.21-1.35. Heat transfer deterioration (HTD) problems can undermine the thermal safety of heating tubes for supercritical carbon dioxide (S-CO 2) flows. Relevant experimental evidence is highly desired, but most cases were investigated for small tube diameters (below 10 mm) and under limited operation parameters, far from the industry-scale applications. In the present work, large tubes (24 mm) are investigated experimentally with pressures of 7.5–15 MPa, mass flow rates of 100–1200 kg·m−2·s−1 and heat fluxes of 30–350 kW·m−2. The seriousness of HTD in large tubes was experimentally confirmed, and the mechanism is explored via a carefully-designed comprehensive comparison between present numerical simulations and experimental tests. Detailed analysis of vapor-like film development inspires us to mitigate the problem using structured-inner-surface, from the viewpoint of "supercritical pseudo-boiling". This inspiration is further evaluated numerically: five types of enhancement structures are proposed to interfere with the development of vapor-like film. It was found that the proposed methods can fully prevent HTD problems, and especially the conical strips can achieve a high heat transfer performance (with performance evaluation criteria PEC of 1.21–1.35) and are thus recommended for HTD prevention in vertical large-diameter tubes under near-critical conditions. In this work, the heat transfer characteristics of supercritical pressure CO2 in vertical heating tube with 10 mm inner diameter under high mass flux were investigated by using an SST k-ω turbulent model. The influences of inlet temperature, heat flux, mass flux, buoyancy and flow acceleration on the heat transfer of supercritical pressure CO2 were discussed. Our results show that the buoyancy and flow acceleration effect based on single phase fluid assumption fail to explain the current simulation results. Here, supercritical pseudo-boiling theory is introduced to deal with heat transfer of scCO2. scCO2 is treated to have a heterogeneous structure consisting of vapor-like fluid and liquid-like fluid. A physical model of scCO2 heat transfer in vertical heating tube was established containing a gas-like layer near the wall and a liquid-like fluid layer. Detailed distribution of thermophysical properties and turbulence in radial direction show that scCO2 heat transfer is greatly affected by the thickness of gas-like film, thermal properties of gas-like film and turbulent kinetic energy in the near-wall region. Buoyancy parameters Bu < 10−5, Bu* < 5.6 × 10−7 and flow acceleration parameter Kv < 3 × 10−6 in this paper, which indicate that buoyancy effect and flow acceleration effect has no influence on heat transfer of scCO2 under high mass fluxes. The hot deformation behavior of 21-4N heat-resistant steel was studied by hot compression test in a deformation temperature range of 1000–1180 °C, a strain rate range of 0.01–10 s−1 and a deformation degree of 60%, and the stress-strain curves were obtained. The functional relationship between flow stress and process parameters (deformation degree, deformation temperature, strain rate, etc.) of 21-4N heat-resistant steel during hot deformation was explored, the constitutive equation of peak stress was established, and its accuracy was verified. Based on the dynamic material model, the energy dissipation maps and destabilization maps of 21-4N heat-resistant steel were established at strains of 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6, and processing maps were obtained by their superposition. Within the deformation temperature range of 1060~1120°C and a strain rate range of 0.01–0.1 s−1, there is a stable domain with the peak efficiency of about 0.5. The best hot working parameters (strain rate and deformation temperature) of 21-4N heat-resistant steel are determined by the stable and instable domain in the processing maps, which are in the deformation temperature range of 1120–1180 °C and the strain rate range of 0.01–10 s−1.
