The thermal properties of Octadecane vary due to the addition of copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles. The synthesis of two nano‐enhanced phase change material (NEPCM) required the implementation of the two‐step method, using Octadecane as the base phase change material and CuO nanoparticles at 2.5 and 5.0 wt%. The experimental characterization determined the specific heat capacity, and thermal conductivity of the NEPCMs solid phase, including phase change enthalpy and temperature. These experimental results were then utilized for computational simulation of the thermal charging (solidification) and discharging (melting) processes of NEPCMs within a spherical enclosure, employing the ANSYS/Fluent software. The incorporation of CuO nanoparticles led to an increase in thermal conductivity while causing a decrease in specific heat capacity, enthalpy, and phase change temperature of Octadecane. The computational results revealed a reduction in the melting period and an improvement in the solidification of both NEPCMs. In terms of melting, the convective heat transfer coefficient increased by approximately 27.4% and 3.2% for the NEPCM at 2.5 and 5.0 wt% CuO, respectively. During the solidification process, the overall heat transfer coefficient experienced a significant increase of 43.8% and 59.8% for the NEPCM at 2.5 and 5.0 wt%, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Unsteady natural convection process of a fluid inside an inner walled vessel caused by an external forced turbulent convective flow of air in a rectangular duct has been analyzed numerically for Re = 5000; Re = 22,000. Fluid mechanics and conjugate convective heat transfer, for both inner fluid (water) and outer fluid (air), described in terms of continuity, linear momentum, k – ε turbulence model and energy equations were predicted by using the finite-volume method (FVM). Results for the streamlines, isotherms, local Nusselt numbers along the cavity walls and the average friction factor are presented. A comparison between obtained results for both Reynolds number is made. In general, it was found that the cooling process is improved up to 79% when Re number is increased from 5000 to 22,000; and the fluid mechanics characteristics inside the vessel is not considerable affected by the velocity inlet of the cooling air. This study analyzed the RT8HC melting in a spherical vessel employing air as a heat transfer fluid. The phase change process was followed both visually and by thermal measurements. Photographs and thermographs allow the following phases' evolution and melting mechanisms. We observed that the melting process was not symmetric around the vertical axis; implications of non-symmetric conditions on the melting mechanisms and heat transfer are discussed and analyzed. This work also includes the effects of outer water vapor condensation on heat transfer in the analyses. We proposed a mathematical model to quantify the heat flux that only requires humidity and temperature measurements and considers both heat convection and condensation effects. Results show that condensation significantly affects heat transfer during the initial stage of the melting process. Beside, these effects extend beyond the condensation time due to the liquid film draining from the spherical vessel surface. Regarding thermography, this technique may be a valuable tool for analyzing and following melting processes inside vessels; however, the presence of liquid film over the sphere affects the temperature measurements obtained from the thermograph analysis. This investigation provides relevant information about using phase change materials in cold thermal energy storage applications, latent thermal loads, and humidity control, which are essential aspects of air-conditioning system designs.
