This study was conducted to measure the concentration of heavy metals and to examine their allied ecological and health risk from the sediments of an urban river adjacent to the tannery industrial park. In this study, atomic absorption spectrophotometer was used to quantify the concentration of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni) and zinc (Zn) in sediments. The mean concentrations of Pb, Cd, Cu, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni and Zn in sediments were 15.4, 0.73, 6.8, 64.7, 305.2, 19.9, 18.2 and 7.3 mg/kg, respectively. According to the Sediment Quality Guideline, sediments from Dhaleshwari River were not polluted by Pb, Cu, Mn and Zn but moderately polluted by Cd and Ni and heavily polluted with Cr and Fe. Moreover, sediment contamination factor (CF), pollution load index (PLI) and geo-accumulation index (Igeo) demonstrated that sediments from the study river were heavily contaminated by Cd and Cr. Furthermore, potential ecological risk showed high risk of Cd and Cr. As a cereal crop, maize ranked third place after wheat and rice in terms of land area coverage for its cultivation, and in Bangladesh, it ranked second place after rice in its production. As the substitution of wheat products, maize has been used widely in baking for human consumption and animal fodder. However, maize grown in this soil around the coal-burning power plant may cause heavy metals uptake that poses a risk to humans. The study was conducted at the maize fields in the Ganges delta floodplain soils of Bangladesh to know the concentration of eight heavy metals (Ni, Cr, Cd, Mn, As, Cu, Zn, and Pb) in soil and maize samples using an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) and to estimate the risk of heavy metals in maize grains. Mean concentrations of heavy metals (mg/kg) in soil were in decreasing order of Zn (10.12) > Cu (10.02) > Mn (5.48) > Ni (4.95) > Cr (3.72) > As (0.51) > Pb (0.27) > Cd (0.23). The plant tissues showed the descending order of heavy metal concentration as roots > grains > stems > leaves. BCF values for As, Cd, Pb, and Mn in roots were higher than 1.0, indicating considerable accumulation of these elements in maize via roots. Total hazard quotient (ƩTHQ) of heavy metals through maize grain consumption was 3.7E+00 and 3.9E+00 for adults and children, respectively, indicating non-cancer risk to the consumers. Anthropogenic influences contributed to the heavy metals enrichment in the Ganges delta floodplain soils around the thermal plant, and potential risks (non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic) were observed due to the consumption of maize grain cultivated in the study area. The research, focusing on the analysis of nine trace elements, namely As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn, completely analyzed their quantities in both water and sediment inside the Rabnabad Channel. Samples were collected during the post-monsoon and analyzed by ICP-OES following acid digestion. The mean concentrations of elements in water and sediments are as follows: Fe > Mn > Pb > Cu > Ni > Zn > Cr > As>Cd, and Zn > Fe > Pb > Mn > As>Cu > Cr > Ni > Cd. To understand the state of ecological and human health risk, several indices were incorporated. Health risk assessment revealed that children posed higher risk than adults. PERI, TRI, and I geo indices for water sediment indicate a significant ecological risk. Moreover, Mn and Pb exhibit elevated HPI values and contribute substantially to contamination factors. Correlation and PCA implicate both anthropogenic and geogenic sources, such as agricultural practices, coal-based power plants, and the Payra seaport, in the elevated concentrations of Cd, Cr, Mn, and Fe in both water and sediment samples. An effective toxicological assessment of soil-metal bioavailability and plant translocation processes is needed in view of the growing negative impact of trace element pollution on the terrestrial environment and human health. This study was conducted to assess the toxicological processes that regulate the plants' trace element absorption into their tissues, the suitability for human use, the potential sources of trace elements, and the risk to human health, using an integrated research methodology. Soils and sweet potato plants were collected from agricultural fields near the tannery waste disposal sites of Dhaka City, Bangladesh and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometers (ICP-MS) were used to analyze the essential and toxic elements. The mean concentrations of total elements in soil followed the descending order of Fe > Zn > Mn > Cr > Ni > Pb > Cu > As > Cd and in plant Fe > Zn > Cu > Cr > Ni > Mn > Pb > As > Cd. In the edible tissues of sweet potato, the concentrations of essential and toxic elements exceeded the maximum permissible levels, indicating not safe for human consumption. The translocation factor (TF) revealed that studied elements are more accumulated in the leaves than tubers. The enrichment factor revealed minimal to very high enrichment of essential and toxic elements in the plant parts while the contamination factor showed low to very high contamination. Considering the health risk of toxic elements from plant samples, As and Pb caused non-cancer and cancer risk on human health. However, the present results suggested that regular monitoring of these essential and toxic elements in soil and plants as well as other food materials around the abandoned tannery waste disposal sites are necessary to prevent excessive build-up of these elements in the food chain. In recent decades, water quality is a great concern for the human being as it is the most important natural resource but water is polluted by increasing population activities. In this study, surface water samples were collected in the wet and the dry season from Halda River, Bangladesh, and 12 physicochemical properties and 10 traces elements (Cd, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, As, Pb, and Hg) were analyzed to assess the metal toxicity, identify the possible sources, and determine possible carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic risk for adults and child residents. During wet season, the mean concentrations of Cd, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, As, Pb, and Hg were 0.032 ± 0.028, 0.004 ± 0.002, 0.010 ± 0.012, 0.38 ± 0.08, 0.010 ± 0.017, 3.33 ± 1.16, 0.062 ± 0.008, 1.34 ± 1.17, 0.030 ± 0.014, and 0.007 ± 0.002 mg/L, respectively, whereas the concentrations were measured as 0.04 ± 0.017, 0.060 ± 0.036, 0.150 ± 0.134, 0.58 ± 0.11, 0.049 ± 0.017, 0.172 ± 0.166, 0.393 ± 0.212, 1.07 ± 0.989, 0.104 ± 0.121, and 0.003 ± 0.002 mg/L, respectively, during the dry season. The levels of trace elements in water samples were much higher than the guideline values for safe limits of drinking water and the protection of freshwater aquatic life, indicated that water from this river is not safe for drinking and/or cooking purposes. Trace element evaluation index indicated that water was found to be high contamination while ecological risk index showed low to very high contamination. All hazard quotient and hazard index (HI) values were higher than the risk threshold of unity. HI values for child were higher than those for adult, indicating that the health of children is at dramatically higher risk than adults. Arsenic for water ingestion and dermal pathways was the primary contributors to total health risk (HI/THI) indicated that As in surface water of the Halda River might pose health risks to residential users. The southwestern coastal areas of Bangladesh have been severely suffering from the scarcity of safe drinking water due to the combined consequences of hydrogeological processes, groundwater depletion, saltwater intrusion, and adverse anthropogenic activities. This concern results in serious public health hazards, particularly for children at primary schools. This study was conducted to evaluate some physiochemical and bacteriological parameters of drinking water from tube wells (TWs) located at primary schools in Kalapara upazila, Patuakhali district, Bangladesh. Water samples were collected from 65 TWs. The levels of the examined parameters recorded the following ranges: pH 6.9–8.3, electrical conductivity 774.3–1987.0 μS/cm, Fe 0.12–15.78 mg/L, As 0.0–0.03 mg/L, and Cl− 9.0–354.0 mg/L. The results revealed that 11% of TWs exceeded the level of Fe recommended by the National Drinking Water Quality Standard in Bangladesh, while other physiochemical parameters fit with the national standards. The bacteriological analysis revealed that 60% of TWs delivered fecal coliform (FC)-free water, while 40% of TWs supplied total coliform (TC)-free water. However, about 26% of TWs had the potential to pose non-carcinogenic health problems for children from As, while only 5% of TWs were found to cause probable non-carcinogenic risks for adults. The calculated carcinogenic risks values for adult male and female were within the USEPA acceptable range (1 × 10−4–1 × 10−6), except for only one sampling point, while four sampling points (6.15% of TWs) exhibited carcinogenic risks for children. Rooftop cultivation of vegetables is considered as a potential food source for urban population. However, rooftop products in the urban area can be contaminated by different types of pollutants like toxic metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The present study is the first that investigated the concentrations of toxic metals and PAHs in rooftop soils and vegetables grown in the urban and peri-urban areas of Bangladesh. Red amaranth and Spinach were selected for rooftop cultivation, and both soil and vegetable samples were collected and analyzed for determining the concentrations of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) as toxic metals, while naphthalene, fluorene, phenanthrene, anthracene, pyrene, benzo(a)anthracene, and chrysene as PAHs. The study observed that urban rooftop soil and vegetables were highly contaminated with toxic metals and PAHs as compared to peri-urban rooftop samples. The metal concentrations were found in order of Zn > Cu > Pb > Cd, however, Pb and Cd concentrations in urban vegetables exceeded the safe limit. On contrary, negligible concentrations of PAHs were detected in both urban and peri-urban rooftop vegetables. The values of health risk indices revealed that the concentrations of toxic metals and PAHs in urban rooftop vegetables would not pose any carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health risks for adults and children and thus are considered to be safe for consumption. The findings of this study will provide scientific evidence to the policy makers and public administrations for urban agriculture based policy formulation as well as will encourage the city dwellers towards urban rooftop agricultural practices. Heavy metals are toxic in nature, and their contamination in foodstuff is a matter of concern for human health. The present study was conducted to assess the concentrations of chromium, nickel, copper, arsenic, cadmium, and lead in rice and vegetables and their possible human health risks in Tangail district, Bangladesh. Metals were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) after microwave digestion system. The average values of Cr, Ni, Cu, As, Cd, and Pb in rice and vegetables were 16.26, 16.11, 13.99, 2.28, 1.86, and 7.93 mg/kg, respectively. The average metal concentration in rice and vegetable species was in the decreasing order of okra > chili > bitter gourd > papaya > brinjal > bean > bottle gourd > rice > cucumber > sponge gourd > Indian spinach. The estimated daily intake (EDI) values of all the metals except Cu were higher than the maximum tolerable daily intake (MTDI). The target hazard quotients (THQs) values of Ni, Cu, As, Cd, and Pb exceeded the threshold value of 1 through consumption of rice and vegetables, indicating significant health risks to both adult and children. The target carcinogenic risk (TR) of As and Pb through consumption of rice and vegetables was higher than the USEPA threshold level (10−4). Trace metals contamination of vegetables in the sub-urban industrial area of Bangladsh are increasing day by day. The mostly consumed vegetables like tomato (Lycopersicon lycopersicum), spinach (Spinacea oleracea), bean (Lablab purpureus), brinjal (Solanum melongena), potato (Solanum tuberosum), cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var botrytis), cabbage (Brassica oleracea var cupitata), and radish (Raphanus sativus) were collected from industrial area. Trace metals arsenic (As), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) were measured using atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS). The descending order of trace metals followed the order of Zn>Mn>Pb>Cd>As. The results revealed that every vegetable contained the highest concentration of Zn range from 15 ± 1.4 to 50 ± 4.0 mg/kg fresh weight. Trace metals in vegetables exceeded the permissible level of FAO and WHO standard. The non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks were estimated on the basis of estimated daily intake (EDI), target hazard quotient (THQ), hazard index (HI) and target carcinogenic risks (TRs). The EDI values of all trace metals were below the maximum tolerable daily intake (MTDI). Total target hazard quotient (TTHQ) were greater than 1, indicated that if people consume these types of vegetables in their diet, they might pose risk to these metals. Finally, the total cancer risks (TRs) values were 6.4 × 10−3 for As and 8.7 × 10−5 for Pb which were greater than threshold value of USEPA (10−6), indicating that the consuming inhabitants of these vegetables are exposed to As and Pb with a lifetime cancer risk. This study reports the first evidence of the occurrence of PFAAs in commonly consumed seafood from the coastal area of Bangladesh. Fifteen target PFAAs in 48 seafood samples (5 finfish and 2 shellfish species) were measured by HPLC-MS/MS. The ΣPFAAs in finfish and shellfish were in the range of 0.32–14.58 and 1.31–8.34 (ng/g wet weight), respectively. Perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) in finfish (0.1–3.86 ng/g ww), whereas perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in shellfish (0.07–2.39 ng/g ww) were the most abundant PFAAs. The results were comparable with other studies worldwide, particularly from China, Spain, Sweden, and USA. The majority of monitored PFAAs did not show clear seasonal variation. However, seafood from the southeast area (Cox's Bazar and Chittagong) showed relatively higher levels of PFAAs. Moreover, the dietary exposure assessment revealed that the daily intakes of PFAAs via seafood consumption were far less than the health-based guidelines, indicating low health risk for the Bangladeshi coastal residents. Six heavy metals (chromium [Cr], nickel [Ni], copper [Cu], arsenic [As], cadmium [Cd], and lead [Pb]) were measured in sediments and soft tissues of eleven commonly consumed fish species collected from an urban river in the northern part of Bangladesh. The abundance of heavy metals in sediments varied in the decreasing order of Cr > Ni > Cu > Pb > As > Cd. The ranges of mean metal concentrations in fish species, in mg/kg wet weight (ww), were as follows: Cr, 0.11–0.46; Ni, 0.77–2.6; Cu, 0.57–2.1; As, 0.43–1.7; Cd, 0.020–0.23; and Pb, 0.15–1.1. In the present study, we investigated the levels of chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in eight groups of foods, namely, cereals, pulses, vegetables, fruit, fish, meat, eggs and milk. The range of Cr, Ni, Cu, As, Cd and Pb in the foodstuffs was 0.18–4.8, 0.008–10, 0.47–22, 0.003–0.98, 0.0003–0.85 and 0.005–3.7 mg/kg fw, respectively. The daily intakes (EDIs) of Cr, Ni, As, Cd and Pb were higher than the maximum tolerable daily intake (MTDI), indicating their potential sources from dietary intake. The combined metal hazard quotients (∑ HQs ) from rice, fruit, vegetables and fish were higher than 1, meaning that metals may pose a considerable risk to local inhabitants due to consumption of these four food items. Concentrations of six heavy metals (chromium, nickel, copper, arsenic, cadmium, and lead) in fish and vegetables were estimated to evaluate contamination levels and health risks for Bangladeshi adults. The analyzed metals varied between different species of fish and vegetables. Metals like Ni, Cd, and Pb in fish species were higher than the respective maximum allowable concentrations (MAC), whereas As, Cd, and Pb in some species of vegetables exceeded the MAC. Health risks associated with these metal intakes were evaluated in terms of dietary intake and target hazard quotients (THQs). The THQ values for individual metals were below 1 (except As for some species), suggesting that people would not experience significant health hazards if they ingest a single metal from one species of fish and/or vegetable. However, total metal THQ (TTHQ) signifies the potential non-carcinogenic health hazard to the highly exposed consumers in Bangladesh. Also, the estimation showed that the carcinogenic risk (TR) of arsenic and lead were within the acceptable range for fish but exceeded the accepted risk level for vegetables. Levels of six metals i.e. chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in three fish species ( Channa punctatus , Heteropneustes fossilis and Trichogaster fasciata ) from three urban rivers in Bangladesh were measured. Concentrations of Cr, Ni, Cu, As, Cd and Pb in fish species were 0.75–4.8, 0.14–3.1, 1.1–7.2, 0.091–0.53, 0.007–0.13, and 0.052–2.7 mg/kg ww, respectively. The analyzed metals were significantly different between species and seasons ( p < 0.05). The target hazard quotients (THQs) and carcinogenic risk (CR) for individual metal showed that As and Pb in muscle was particularly hazardous and potential risk for the low, medium and high fish consumer in Bangladesh. The non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk of arsenic and lead to adults and children via daily dietary intake of food composites in Bangladesh was estimated. The target hazard quotients (THQs), hazard index (HI) and target carcinogenic risk (TR) were calculated to evaluate the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risk from arsenic and lead. Most of the individual food composites contain a considerable amount of arsenic and lead. The highest mean concentrations of arsenic were found in cereals (0.254 mg kg–1 fw) and vegetables (0.250 mg kg–1 fw), and lead in vegetables (0.714 mg kg–1 fw) and fish (0.326 mg kg–1 fw). The results showed the highest THQs of arsenic in cereals and lead in vegetables for both adults and children which exceeded the safe limit (> 1) indicating that cereals and vegetables are the main food items contributing to the potential health risk. The present study evaluates the concentration of heavy metals in eight different vegetables species around industrial area of Dhaka city Bangladesh. Metals were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry after microwave digestion system. The levels of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd and Pb in vegetables were 0.61 to 3.0, 1.6 to 12, 8.3 to 34, 16 to 119, 0.007 to 0.24, 0.009 to 1.0 and 0.06 to 3.5 mg/kg fw, respectively. Groundwater from the coastal alluvial plain is the primary water source in coastal areas. Its contaminants, such as nitrate and fluoride, are significant concerns for freshwater supply and human health issues. Although spatiotemporal variability of nitrate and fluoride levels has been analyzed individually in the Indo-Bangladesh coastal region, their drivers and hydro-chemical analysis have scarcely been studied. Thus, to assess the groundwater quality, hydro-chemistry, and drivers in coastal alluvial aquifers, 123 groundwater samples were collected from the east (Bangladesh) and west coasts (India) for assessment of nitrate and fluoride levels and major physiochemical parameters. Multivariate statistical and hydro-chemical analysis and public health risk appraisal were carried out for this purpose. The results showed that 25% (East coast) and 22.39% (West coast) of groundwater samples surpassed the allowable limit of fluoride with a maximum concentration of up to 16.11 mg/L and the tolerable nitrate limit slightly exceeded 10 mg/L. Furthermore, we note that industrial waste, synthetic pesticides, and agricultural fertilizer triggered the leaching of nitrate into groundwater, while the release of fluoride into groundwater was possibly due to evaporite dissolution, carbonate mineral weathering, and ion exchange processes on both coasts. About 28.36% (26.79%) of groundwater samples possessed poor quality on the east (west) coasts. Considering the uncertainties of the variables, the mean hazard quotient ingestion values of fluoride faced by children (adults) were 10.5 (1.39) and 5.56 (6.9 × 10−1), respectively, on the east (west) coasts, demonstrating a high non-carcinogenic risk to people, particularly, children, who cannot be neglected. Children had two times higher health risks than the adult inhabitants in both regions studied. Probabilistic models can reveal health risks more extensively than deterministic models.
